2006 Bentley Continental flying spur problems

The Bentley Flying Spur, known as the Bentley Continental Flying Spur before 2013, is a full-sized luxury car produced by Bentley Motors Limited since 2005. It is the four-door saloon variant of the Bentley Continental GT two-door coupé.

The Flying Spur is assembled by hand at Bentley's factory in Crewe, England. Briefly, due to lack of capacity at the Crewe factory upon the car's introduction, 1,358 units of the first generation Flying Spur destined for markets other than the United States and United Kingdom were built at parent-company Volkswagen's Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany. This arrangement ended in early 2007, when all assembly works reverted to Crewe.

First generation (2005–2013)

Overview

The first-generation Flying Spur was officially unveiled at the 75th Geneva Motor Show in March 2005. It had a 5,998 cc (6.0 L) twin-turbocharged W12 engine tuned to produce 560 PS (412 kW; 552 bhp) and torque of 650 N⋅m (479 lbf⋅ft) at 1,600–6,100 rpm. Torsen-based permanent all-wheel drive system was standard on the Flying Spur. It can go 0–100 km/h (0.0–62.1 mph) in 4.9 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 314 km/h (195 mph). It also has Adaptive Air Suspension and Continuous Damping Control as standard. At that time, it was the world's fastest and most powerful production saloon.

Sales of the first-generation Flying Spur began in late 2005. During the first full-year sales of the Flying Spur, the number of deliveries exceeded 4,000 units. The Speed model of the Flying Spur was introduced in 2008 as a higher performance variant with revised ceramic disc brakes and tuned to produce 602 horsepower. The acceleration of the Speed model is 0–100 km/h (0.0–62.1 mph) in 4.5 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 322 km/h (200 mph). A total of 1,155 units of the Speed model were produced in model years 2009 and 2010.

Common 2006 Bentley Continental flying spur problems

The Bentley Continental Flying Spur, a symbol of luxury and power, is known for its smooth ride and high-quality finishes. However, it has been reported to have issues with its air suspension system, which is a crucial component of the vehicle's overall performance.

One of the most common problems with the Bentley Continental Flying Spur's air suspension system is sagging. If your car looks like it's sagging in the front or the back, or if it's leaning to one side or the other, it's likely that there's a problem with the air suspension. This issue can be caused by a leak in the air suspension system, which can lead to the compressor running for longer than usual and making loud noises. If you hear hissing along with the noise, it's a clear sign of a leak in the system.

Another problem associated with the air suspension system is handling issues. If your Flying Spur isn't taking turns quite like it used to, or if it feels like you can't control the car during turns, it's possible that there's a problem with the air suspension. This issue can make the car feel unstable during turns, which can be dangerous.

The air suspension system in the Bentley Continental Flying Spur is a sophisticated system that actively manages the car's ride height. The system includes several components, including ride height sensors, a suspension control module, an air compressor, air lines, and air springs. If any of these components fail, it can lead to suspension problems.

The cost of repairing the air suspension system at a Bentley dealership can be quite high, as replacement parts are always going to be expensive due to the sophisticated and complex nature of air suspensions. Additionally, the moving parts and flexible materials in the components are destined to wear out and fail at some point, which can add to the overall cost of repair and maintenance.

In summary, the Bentley Continental Flying Spur's air suspension system is a crucial component of the car's overall performance, but it is also prone to issues such as sagging, handling problems, and component failure. These issues can be expensive to repair, but staying ahead of them by addressing them early can help prevent additional damage to surrounding parts in the vehicle.

Negative 2006 Bentley Continental flying spur car reviews

  1. Jayson McLaughlin 2024-07-02

Although Bentley has a good reputation, my personal experience with the Flying Spur was not great. I found it to be disappointing and ended up returning it after a week. Currently, I am considering swapping it for a Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren, a Mercedes Benz CLK 55 AMG, or maybe a SL 65 AMG. However, my love for Bentley remains strong, as I am a proud owner of a Continental GT. It's important to note that everyone has their own personal opinion, and for me, I find my Audi A6 to be more luxurious. Thank you for listening to my experience!

  2. Buddy Luettgen 2024-05-18

Hello! I recently had the chance to take the Bentley for a spin, but you might be curious about its history since it arrived at the lot in December. Well, it turns out that it had to spend some time in the shop due to a couple of engine issues and some problems with the technology. Unfortunately, it also lags a bit in acceleration. If you're in the market for a top-of-the-line luxury car, I would recommend checking out the A8 W12 L or the 760 Li. Personally, I'm excited to be getting a 760 Li soon!

  3. Kirk Hintz 2024-04-04

The car's performance is impressive, but I couldn't help but notice that the Chrysler 300 has the exact same front grille. It's a shame that the garage door opener isn't standard, but the radio and navigation are top-notch. The comfort level is also excellent. However, it's worth noting that it's a gas guzzler, unlike the 760Li which gets 22 mpg and the S65 AMG which gets 18 mpg. While I do love my Bentley and would recommend it, I would suggest considering a Mercedes-Benz S600 or S65 as well.

  4. Llewellyn Hansen 2024-02-28

The Mercedes Benz S600 and BMW 760Li are both great luxury cars. We did find it surprising that the garage door opener is optional, but overall the handling is fine. If you're looking for an exotic luxury car, you might also want to consider the Audi A8 W12 L. The car is a bit heavy, which affects its performance, and the rear seats are not as comfortable as those in the BMW 760Li. While it may have some advantages over the S600 and 760Li in certain areas, overall it falls a bit short.

  5. Darrick Mraz 2024-01-16

Parple Lossh seems to know what he's talking about! I completely agree with him that Bentleys can be quite uncomfortable. Personally, I would prefer a Mercedes-Benz S600. But of course, everyone has their own opinion.

Positive 2006 Bentley Continental flying spur car reviews

  1. Enrique Jones 2025-01-07

In my lifetime, I have owned some pretty special cars, but my Flying Spur is in a class of its own and far above any of the others. Even after 4 years, I still look forward to my next drive with excitement. It is a head-turner, with 95% of people giving favorable comments, although a few envious remarks have been shouted out. The car is a delight in all ways, from its remarkable comfort and performance to its uncompromising quality of construction and materials, and understated elegance both inside and out. The only slightly negative comment I can make is that I noticed an improvement in ride, quietness, and handling when I changed from the factory-installed Dunlop tires to Michelin Sport A/S Plus 275/35 ZR20's. I feel it's not an exaggeration to rate it 5 stars.

  2. Craig Okuneva 2024-08-14

This car is a joy to drive, with a beautiful sound system and smooth handling. While there were a few minor issues with the wheels and air conditioning, these were quickly resolved through prompt and efficient service. The interior storage space could be improved, but overall this is a lovely car that I look forward to taking on many open road adventures.

  3. Rylan Grant 2024-08-06

I'm really impressed with this car. I've driven a lot of luxury cars, but this one stands out. The Continental Flying Spur has great power, plenty of room, and stylish design. The only downside is that the bluetooth system only works with Nokia phones, and unfortunately my Razer isn't compatible.

  4. Jordyn Koch 2024-07-28

I had a better experience at the Mercedes and BMW dealerships compared to the Bentley dealer. Although the car has exhilarating performance, it lacks the technology that Mercedes or BMW offer. I had to purchase a special phone to integrate with the car system and add satellite radio, which was disappointing. Bentley, it would be great if you could include these features as standard. However, if you value panache and are willing to pay $40,000 more than the other cars I mentioned, then the Bentley is a great choice.

  5. Marlon Hettinger 2024-07-25

Let's face it, all cars are good these days and our expectations are equally high. However, there is something special about my Bentley that fills me with pride every time I approach it. It exudes class and quality, and judging by the finger marks on the glass after parking in public, it seems that others feel the same way (or wish they did).
