The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a retro-styled mid-size SUV produced by Toyota between 2006 and 2022. Introduced as a concept car at the January 2003 North American International Auto Show, the FJ Cruiser was approved for production after positive consumer response and debuted at the January 2005 North American International Auto Show in final production form.

The FJ Cruiser was built by Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan, between 2006 and 2022. The vehicle shares many structural underpinnings with the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.: 96 The FJ Cruiser entered the Japanese market on 4 December 2010, announced on 25 November in that year.

On 5 November 2013, Toyota USA announced the 2014 model year Trail Teams edition would be called the "Ultimate Edition" and that the 2014 model year would be the last for the FJ Cruiser in that market. It continued to be made for sale in other markets such as Australia until its export to that market was discontinued in August 2016. As of April 2022, it was still sold in markets such as Chile, the Middle East, the Philippines and Southern African Customs Union countries.

On 1 October 2022, Toyota announced that the FJ Cruiser would be discontinued in the Middle East by December 2022, along with a final edition model.

Common 2008 Toyota Fj cruiser problems

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a rugged off-road SUV known for its reliability, but there are some common problems that owners have reported across various model years. These issues mainly involve the transmission, drivetrain components, tire pressure monitoring system, and low-pressure fuel pump.

  • Faulty Drivetrain Components: FJ Cruiser drivers have reported various drivetrain problems, including bad CV joints, rattling noises caused by bad bearings, and driveshaft issues. These problems can make the vehicle unstable and noisy, making every ride uncomfortable. Transmission shudder sometimes occurs along with these problems, making it difficult for drivers to maintain control over their vehicles.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Faults: The TPMS is designed to warn drivers about insufficient tire pressure, but faults in this system can make it inoperable. This issue should be addressed to ensure safe driving and receive low-pressure warnings when needed. It's a minor issue that can be solved by sorting out the wiring, but it's still something to consider when buying a used FJ Cruiser.
  • Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Issues: The FJ Cruiser uses a low-pressure fuel pump to deliver fuel from the tank toward the combustion chambers. This pump is known to have stalling issues, and if the fuel pump stalls while driving, it can cause the engine to stall. This is especially dangerous when driving at higher speeds, so make sure to check the fuel pump before buying a used Cruiser.

While these common problems can be concerning, it's important to note that the Toyota FJ Cruiser is generally a reliable vehicle. These issues are mostly light and can be easily handled, with few reported engine problems. The FJ Cruiser is equipped with Toyota's sturdy 4.0-liter V6 engine, which has proven to be reliable over the years.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-19
  • VIN: JTEBU11F18K
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On the home my wife went to apply the brakes and she had no brake pressure. The pedal went all the way to the floor. Then several lights and a buzzer sound started, and she could not stop the car. She was able to pull up on the e-brake just before she drove completely into the intersection, where several cars were driving in both directions. The front end of car ended partially in the north bound lane of US MD-5. There was also a home at the end of the road that she could have also driven into. I researched on several forums where other owners have had the same issue and the dealership has been unable to diagnose the issue. No TSB or recall has been made, but the number of people that have had this issue, something should have been done. My 4-year-old daughter was in the car, and I could have lost both of them. People need to aware of this. I had no idea that a total brake failure was possible with these vehicles.

  • VIN: JTEBU11FX8K
  • Components: Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness

I cannot remove the metal piece to fix this because the strap is sewn together. I thought it was just twisting because that’s what car seats sometimes do. But when I remove the padding to clean it today I realized it was a manufacturer error.

  • VIN: JTEBU11F08K
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: After buying my vehicle I have began to notice a growing rust problem that is not due to salt water or other environmental conditions, but clearly a defect in manufacturing. After joining a few Facebook groups with other FJ owners I’ve found countless other people have had the same problem and that without massive trust removal my vehicle is expected to have failures in the frame and suspension at some point.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-01
  • VIN: JTEZU11F58K
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Toyota FJ Cruiser 2008 "FUEL PUMP" failed to indicate the amount of gasoline I had in the tank, the car completely stop working on the freeway while I was driving approximately at 70 MPH right in the fast lane, the car/motor just ugly shook and suddenly it stall/shut down... luckily the cars behind me were able to maneuver their cars and avoided a possible crash. I tried to start the car again and gave me some forward jumps until i got it off of the road. the gas panel indicator was still reading 1/2 filled tank but not gas inside tank...I called freeway service patrol (511) and they Offered me a gallon of gas, as i run out (they saved my day). i thought this was just one hit wonder problem but not the car has been getting me in trouble ever since now my wife drives it too, she or me assume there is still gas in the car and out of the blue i wind out carrying gas in a red gallon... i asked mechanics if they can replace but they said no easy - access to replace the pump is not well designed to extract the fuel pump and the floor mats on the car and the rear seat must be removed and some how the car will have some cosmetic damage... best is to lower the full gas tank from underneath but there is also a problem as the wire connector length are extremely short and they must be cut out and add extensions after replacing pump and may affect sensor lights... and repair for that is quite expensive. The car pump goes up when full tank but as gas is used needle stops at 1/2 mark and there is no way to tell if i have gas- I had experienced 8 time stalls, luckily no accidents - I found this online and called Toyota but they are unaware of this recall: "if stall pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began May 4, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371" is it true?

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-31
  • VIN: JTEBU11FX8K
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The frame of my Truck has started to rust out as to many FJ Cruisers. It's been a known issue that these frame have this problem along with the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra. Which Toyota have a recall on those two models but they've yet to recognize the Toyota FJ Cruiser for the same issue. If this issue isn't resolved, it can result in weak points in the chassis making those area fail and cause an accident underload. I have had my shop look at it and said they can only treat the affected areas so much but the issue will keep coming back over time as rust does not go away unless its cut out. For the safety for myself, any FJ Owners as well as the roads we share with the public I hope that we get this issue corrected through the Manufacturer. Thank you

Therefore, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."
  • Consequence: Light intensities above the maximum allowable limit could cause increased glare for oncoming traffic and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the 55 watt bulbs with 35 watt bulbs, free of charge. The recall began on June 6, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
2013-03-15
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2013 FJ Cruiser passenger vehicles. The retractors for the front driver and passenger seat belts are mounted in the access door (rear door) panels of the vehicle. Due to insufficient strength of the access door panel, cracks may develop in the panel if the access door is repeatedly and forcefully closed over an extended period of time.
  • Consequence: If cracks occur in the panel around the lower retractor anchor, the seat belt retractor could become detached, which could increase the risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: The safety recall began on June 6, 2013. Toyota will mail an interim letter to owners late in April 2013. Remedy notifications to the owners for the repair will begin in late May 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
2012-10-17
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain Toyota Racing Development (TRD) brake kits, P/N PTR09-35070, and TRD High-Performance brake kits, P/N PTR09-35100, installed by Toyota vehicle processing centers and sold by Toyota dealers as an optional accessory for model year 2007 through 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser vehicles. The subject TRD brake kit is specifically designed for the front wheels of 2007-2012 model year FJ Cruiser vehicles. Due to the shape of the outer brake tube of the brake kit, the clearance between the outer brake tube and a TRD 16 inch 6-spoke alloy wheel is minimal. If wheel balance weights are installed in an incorrect location, there is a possibility that the outer brake tube could be damaged due to interference with the balance weight, and brake fluid could leak from the damaged tube.
  • Consequence: If a brake tube becomes damaged and leaks fluid, it may result in increased stopping distances, and in some cases, loss of vehicle front braking performance, which could increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: All known owners of 2007-2012 model year FJ Cruiser vehicles will be notified by first class mail. If the vehicle is equipped with one of the TRD brake kits, the brake caliper outer brake tube will be replaced with a newly designed one at no charge. During this service, if necessary, the dealer will make wheel balance adjustments. This remedy will be performed even if the vehicle has original equipment 16 inch or 17 inch wheels or TRD 16 inch Beadlock ring type wheels, which are not affected by the condition, to assure sufficient clearance in the event wheels are changed at a later time. Notification to owners began on December 17, 2012. Owners may contact Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Hi there! I was thinking about getting some extra medical coverage for my vehicle insurance. I've noticed that when people get in and out of the back seat, they tend to hit their heads. Also, the interior panels aren't quite up to Chevy's usual build quality and fit. Additionally, the front windshield wipers tend to chatter and not lay flat in cold weather, which can be a bit frustrating. Lastly, I've noticed that the exterior paint scratches pretty easily. Just thought I'd share my experience with you!

I noticed that the paint on the outside of the FJ scratches easily, and the plastic interior scratches even easier. It's disappointing that for an off-road vehicle, the design seems cheap and poorly executed. Additionally, the premium gas at $2.98 a gallon seems excessive for a vehicle that only gets 15 miles in the city and 20 on the highway. On the bright side, the FJ rides nicely and has good pick-up when you need it. However, it's frustrating to have to run premium gas and worry about the paint. I also found that the windshield cracks easily due to the upright design, which is similar to the Hummer. Rocks don't skip off, which is surprising for an off-road vehicle. I had to fix 5 small dings before the last one gave way to a 16

I really enjoyed my experience, but I wish I had known that the value of a new vehicle drops to 25,000 or less as soon as you drive it off the lot. In the future, I will search for a one-year-old vehicle to avoid spending more than 23,000. I am disappointed that Toyota has lost a lifetime customer due to this issue. However, I will still keep my old toy trucks. They must have been designed by real engineers. Thanks for understanding.

If you plan on driving in temperatures below 30 degrees F, I would not recommend the FJ Cruiser. Although this temperature is not considered very cold in many parts of the world, my personal experience with the FJ Cruiser has shown that it has difficulty with ice. Even with anti-freeze rated up to -50 degrees F, the windshield wiper fluid tank has turned to slush at 27 degrees F. This is likely due to the poor engineering of the tank's position within the motor, which makes it more susceptible to freezing than other cars I have owned.

I have owned several SUVs in the past, including Nissans and Jeeps, and recently purchased the FJ for my family's needs. While there are some design elements that could be improved, such as the dark interior and limited visibility, I have found that the FJ's performance in snowy conditions is not up to par. Despite trying different tires, I have found it to be unsafe to drive in these conditions, especially with the nervous anti-lock brakes. In comparison, my previous Xterra performed better, and the Jeep was the best. Additionally, I have found that the stain-proof seats can be difficult to clean due to dog hair getting caught in the open fibers. Overall, I believe that the FJ has room for improvement in terms of its performance in snowy conditions, but I am confident that it can be addressed with the right modifications.

This vehicle may not be the best fit for families with infants or small children as it may not provide enough space for them.

Some may call it a mid-life crisis, but I call it fun. The 2008 FJ Cruiser is a break from the norm, a good one, and has to be one of the most fun vehicles on the market today. The inside reminds me of an early 70s Chevy Blazer: cool. The driving position is excellent, and the seats are comfortable. One can't help but feel safe with all the standard air bags, stability controls, and just the sheer size of everything. The FJ says cool simplicity vs. sophisticated. Fuel economy is not great, but is better than many SUVs. While not for everyone, the FJ is easily the best car I have ever owned. Do you get up in the morning excited to get in your ride? Not to rub it in, but I do.

It may take some time to get used to the blind spots, but overall, I absolutely love this car! It's so much fun to drive, and the 4X4 feature is really nice. I have a friend with a Jeep Wrangler, and this car can go toe to toe with it off-road while being much more practical. There are a few things that could be improved, such as the seats not having a forward track for people getting into the back seat, and the rear windows not going down. While these may seem like small issues, the wind can whip through the truck like crazy. Additionally, it would be great if the back window could go down like with the 4 runner. However, I still highly recommend this vehicle! You should definitely consider buying it!

I recently purchased my FJ and have been pleasantly surprised with the fuel efficiency, achieving over 20 MPG. By driving conservatively, such as coasting in neutral when possible and planning for stops ahead of time, I have been able to exceed the advertised MPG, even with 25% city driving. The FJ is a pleasure to drive and provides great comfort. However, accessing the back seat can be a challenge, especially for younger passengers who may struggle without a handle to assist them.

  5. Xander Schmidt 2024-05-21

Owned over a year and bought it used with just over 9,000 miles. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems whatsoever. The truck came with an aftermarket DVD, amp and subwoofer, which has earned me many compliments from friends. It's also easy to shift into 4X4 when needed. The truck rides perfectly and I love the height. The driver's seat is adjustable, which is a great feature. The interior is awesome. I highly recommend buying one!
