Acura Rlx problems
The Acura RLX is a mid-size flagship luxury car manufactured by Honda and sold under their Acura division, released in 2013, succeeding the RL. The RLX was discontinued in 2020.
Background and development
The Acura Legend was a very successful vehicle to launch Acura as a separate division, and combined with sales of the Integra this resulted in Acura outselling longtime luxury marques BMW and Mercedes-Benz as well as Toyota's new luxury division Lexus. However, the successor RL sold below expectations due to relatively tight interior for its size, the lack of a V8 performance engine option and better handling rear-wheel drive experience, and/or relatively expensive compared to its rivals.
An October 2009 Car and Driver blog cited a dinner with Acura executives who acknowledged that the introduction of the new, larger, and in some guises, more powerful, fourth generation Acura TL made it difficult to market the then-current RL. In November 2009, an Autoweek article reported that new Honda CEO Takanobu Ito told Automotive News that Acura is going to change course. Speaking of the worldwide economy before the collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers, Ito said through an interpreter, "Pre-Lehman, we did have the idea to produce more multicylinder engines... I see the future of Acura as a merger of BMW and Audi -- something between high performance and high technology." As a result of this midstream change, Acura will be in a "low-growth period of developing new products," Ito said. "We were thinking that we could come up with glamorous, gorgeous products that would sell. Now, our premium products will be expressed in advanced environmental technologies, rather than glamorous things attached to the product," he said.

Common Acura Rlx problems
The Acura RLX has been reported to have several common problems, with the most serious one being a faulty valve in the front shock absorber. This issue is common in the 2015 model year and can present itself as a knocking or clunking noise when going over bumps or uneven surfaces. The faulty valve can cause the shock absorber to fail, leading to a bouncy or unstable ride.
Another common problem with the Acura RLX is related to the wheels and hubs, with the 2014 model year having the most overall complaints in this category. The most-reported problem is a rattle in the suspension, which can be caused by worn or damaged suspension components. The average cost to fix this problem is $2,300, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 91,000 miles.
The 2014 Acura RLX has also been reported to have issues with the Collision Mitigation Braking System, which can cause the vehicle to apply the brakes unexpectedly due to registering common roadside objects like guardrails and telephone poles as obstacles. This issue was the subject of a serious recall the year it was released and required a software update to resolve.
In addition to these specific problems, some Acura RLX owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including a 3G connection that has been sun-downed, causing Acura-Link to no longer work. This issue is not specific to any one model year but can affect any RLX with the 3G connection.
Overall, while the Acura RLX is known for its high-performance capabilities and luxurious interior, it has been reported to have several common problems, particularly in the 2014 and 2015 model years. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.
How reliable is the Acura RLX?
Compared to rivals, the RLX offers far fewer trims, doesn't have CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone integration, and isn't as well known. And while Acura vehicles have a good record of reliability, the RLX's resale value is below average.
Why was RLX discontinued?
2020 was the final model year for the RLX as the market shifts towards SUV / crossovers. As a result, the TLX became Acura's flagship sedan. Although similar, the RLX was larger than the current TLX.
What is the RLX recall?
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Acura NSX, 2019 Acura RDX, RLX and RLX Sport Hybrid, 2018-2019 Honda Accord, Civic Hatchback, Civic Type R and HR-V, 2019-2020 Insight and 2019 Fit vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
Is Acura RLX rare?
The RLX is a niche vehicle; Acura reported selling just over 1,000 examples in 2019 while the TLX sedan sold more than 26,000.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-07-02
- VIN: JH4KC1F53EC
- Components: WHEELS,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I have a serious safety issue with my 2014 Acura RLX. While driving, the rear wheel intermittently kicks out, causing the entire vehicle to swerve unpredictably. This poses a significant safety risk to myself, passengers, and other road users. The rear wheel kicks out, leading to sudden swerving of the vehicle. I believe this is related the the Rear Toe Actuators and PAW-S system. I first noticed this issue in July 2023 and sought assistance from Acura. At first the dealership denied that my car was affected by their Service Bulletin 23-022. I knew I had an issue and called and created a case with Acura. I drove my car as little as possible last year. Last month, I had an issue which made my car only drive under 50mph and all these lights popped up on my instrument panel: it read: Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) problem, Forward collision warning (FCW) Electric Power steering problem, Brake. I brought my car in to my regular mechanic. He showed me the codes on my car showed the service bulletin. I then took my car back to Acura dealership (June 17th). Acura identified the issue as related to rear toe actuators. Acura called me and informed me that I was outside of their warranty period even thought I started the case with them last year. The estimated cost exceeds $3,000, which I find financially burdensome. The safety issue persists despite Acura's negligence and puts me and my family and other drivers at risk, necessitating urgent intervention to prevent potential accidents. Service Bulletins: Reference to Acura Service Bulletin 23-022 addressing similar issues. Communication with Acura/Honda: Case numbers: Case 14025611 Please help me in investigating this safety issue and determining if it warrants further action, such as a safety recall or investigation into Acura's handling of the matter. I believe this issue may affect other owners of the 2014 Acura RLX or other RLX owners up to the year 2020 and poses a safety risk that requires immediate attention.

- VIN: JH4KC2F99GC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2016 RLX SH-AWD (bought new in 2017 - now with 62K on the odometer) developed a knocking noise on [XXX] 2024. I scheduled service with Buerkle Acura (Brooklyn Park, MN) and drove it very little until the appointment on Wednesday, [XXX], 2024. I was hoping it was noisy valves, or a broken exhaust hanger, but was informed by the technician last night that there are metal shavings in the oil pan and that connecting rod bearing #5 is spun. All maintenance has been performed at this dealership, which is where I bought the car brand new. The engine in this vehicle is the J35Y4 which is NOT part of the NHTSA Recall No. : 23V-751. Please look into this matter, as I have seen on the Acura forum [XXX] ) that another Acura RLX owner (2018 model) has experienced a connecting rod bearing failure as well. My vehicle is covered by an extended warranty from Acura, so I will be getting a new short block. The heads were pressure tested and milled and will be reinstalled. All labor and parts are covered by the extended warranty by Acura, so I have no complaints with Acura (so far). - Summary: I have a 2015 Acura RLX equipped with precision all wheel steer(PAWS). According to Acura, PAWS allows the rear wheels to move independently of the front wheels for better control and handling. The system often malfunctions and moves the vehicle in a path other than what is intended based on my steering wheel input. It is very dangerous as I do not know when the system will malfunction and I have to quickly adjust the steering wheel to correct the PAWS malfunctioning. I have brought this to the attention of my local Acura dealer and American Honda. I now understand there is a known defect with the PAWS systems but Honda does not deem this a safety issue. There is a national backorder to have the appropriate part(s) in to remedy the issue. I do not feel safe driving the vehicle due to it's unpredictable nature and risk of causing a collision.

- VIN: JH4KC1F56EC
- Components: STEERING,WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: After making a turn at light, steering wheel stayed turned while car was straight. Then it jerks itself back into place. Another occurrence was while driving on highway, steering wheel was turning sideways while driving straight then car starts to slow down on its own and the lights on dash came on ( breaking system, fwd collision, lane departure, brake hold system,VSA, EPS, hill start assist) this has happened 3 times in the last 2-3 months. We have changed tires, had alignment done, had fuses replaced, new battery and it is still happening. Not safe while driving on highway or anywhere for that matter. Needs to be recalled and fixed. I have looked up this issue and it seems to be an ongoing issue on this year/make/model. I cannot be driving in a car like this if it keeps happening, I drive my elderly mother and in-laws to their doctor appointments and cannot risk an accident with them. It happened once with my in- laws in the car. Could be a serious lawsuit on Acura. The consumer stated that all of the issues started around the same time.

This is a fantastic car! It's actually my 4th Acura (2 TSX, 1 TL). The interior is better than anything I've seen, and the standard technology is exceptional. While it could be a bit sharper on the outside, it still gets lots of looks and certainly beats the Lexus GS. Plus, with the great discounting going on, it would be hard to find a better value.

I absolutely love driving this car! I've been a fan since the '88 legend (i.e. '88 legend, '96 RLX premium, '98 RL premium, '16 RLX tech). The ride is incredibly smooth and reliable. It always puts a smile on my face when I look at it. The stereo is fantastic and it has good power - it really gets up and goes when you need it to. I know that other brands like Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Genesis may excel in certain categories, but I'm still in love with my car. I had the opportunity to get an E350 and I've also considered the GS/LS models, but I'm just too attached to my car. Although, I must admit, I'm definitely getting a NSX when I hit the lottery! :)

I purchased a new RLX in 2014, but unfortunately, it has had three recalls and now there is an engine noise that Acura mechanics are having trouble figuring out. Audio tapes have been sent to Acura Engineering, but they are still stumped. It's been in the shop for two weeks now, and I intend to get rid of it as soon as it comes back. Unfortunately, the trade-in value is now only $35,000 for a one-year-old car with 12,000 miles, even though I paid $52,000 for it. If you're looking for a reliable car, I would recommend going with Lexus or Infinity to save yourself some trouble.

All in all, it sounds like you had a good experience with the car. However, you mentioned that you are unsure if you would lease it again if given the opportunity. Is there anything in particular that you didn't like about it?

I purchased my RLX-ADV approximately four months ago and have only driven 1500 miles so far. Unfortunately, I have had to take it back to the dealer three times for repairs. The issues I experienced included an iPhone 4S problem with automatic dialling and hanging up, a low battery and charging system warning sign (which occurred in less than the first 50 miles), and the camera and LDW/LKAS shutting down due to overheating (when the temperature was around 90 degrees outside). The dealer recharged the battery, but no action was taken to address the other issues. Acura and the dealer insisted that the shut-down was the proper action by design. Although the SF Bay Area is known for its good climate, the LDW/LKAS shut-down happened multiple times in April, and I am concerned about what will happen in the summer. In May 2016, the battery issue was resolved after two charging visits, and I received a new battery less than 12 months after owning the car. The phone issue was also resolved after I upgraded to an iPhone 6S. However, the most important issue, the LDW/LKAS shut-down, persists. It consistently shuts down these important safety features when the outside temperature is around 90 degrees. I gave up fighting with Acura since they insisted that this is a necessary precaution to protect the delicate electronic system. I am disappointed that I spent extra money on this car since it was promised with these safety features. Acura sold me an ill-designed product that prioritizes the protection of the car over the driver. In May 2017, the LDW/LKAS shut-down is still a big problem, and I have already experienced it twice this year when the temperature went up to the low 90s. As an unsatisfied customer of Acura, I hope they can address this issue soon.

The quality of the interior could be improved. Additionally, the shifting of the cylinder can be quite rough and may be bothersome to some drivers. In fact, my wife's 12-year-old Subaru has a smoother shifting experience.

I bought my Acura RLX in 2019 with 59,000 miles. Unfortunately, after only two weeks of driving, the car started veering to the right when I was driving straight. I took it to the Acura Dealership and they diagnosed the issue as the rear actuators. Thankfully, the car was still under warranty and the repair was covered. However, the same issue has now occurred again and it's a safety concern. The car turned sideways while I was driving and another car almost hit me from the side. The Acura dealership informed me that I would be responsible for the repair as they only warrant the repair for 12 months. I did some research and found that the vehicle had previously been recalled for steering suspension issues. I made a complaint with Acura client relations and a case manager was assigned to my case. Unfortunately, it has been a month and I have not received any follow-up from the case manager despite leaving several messages. I am grateful to have another car, but I am concerned about the safety of this vehicle. I refuse to drive it and put myself or someone else in danger. I hope that Acura will recall this issue as it is a serious safety concern. The car could veer in any direction at any time.
