Volkswagen Jetta sportwagen problems
The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).
The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.
Nameplate etymology
Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).
A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common Volkswagen Jetta sportwagen problems
The Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen has been a popular choice among car buyers due to its spacious interior, refined performance, and advanced safety technology. However, like any other vehicle, it has its fair share of problems that have been reported by its owners.
One of the most common issues with the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen is related to its accessories and interior problems, which have been reported by owners of various model years. For instance, the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen has the most overall complaints, with the most reported problem being the radio stopping to work. This issue has been reported by several owners, with an average cost to fix of $5,000 and an average mileage of 19,000 miles. Another common problem with this model year is the failure of the interior door handle, which has been reported by several owners, with an average cost to fix of $8,000 and an average mileage of 24,000 miles. Additionally, the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen has been rated as the worst model year due to other possible factors such as higher repair costs or more problems at lower mileage. The most reported problem with this model year is the failure of the interior door handle, which has been reported by several owners, with an average cost to fix of $500 and an average mileage of 95,000 miles.
Another common issue with the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen is related to its transmission problems. For instance, the 2000 model year has been reported to have transmission issues, with symptoms such as hard shifting, gear slippage, or the transmission failing entirely. The root cause of this problem is often premature wear within the transmission system. If your Jetta has these issues, it would require a transmission rebuild or replacement, typically done by a professional mechanic.
The 2001 Jetta often had window regulator failures, with symptoms such as windows stuck open or closed, or moving up and down at odd times. The likely culprit is a faulty window regulator, which can be replaced by a mechanic, a relatively straightforward task.
The 2019 Jetta has also been reported to have transmission problems, with symptoms such as grinding noise produced in both Normal and ECO modes. Many owners were upset when the dealership told them that it was normal and not a problem. Another troublesome spot for this Jetta is body hardware, with complaints about loose bolts and the faulty trunk.
In summary, the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen has several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues include accessories and interior problems, transmission problems, and window regulator failures. While the Jetta SportWagen is a popular choice among car buyers, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-26
- VIN: 3VWLL7AJ9DM
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 2013 Jetta TDI with 92k miles. I am the third owner of this car which has been regularly maintained since new with all service records, including a 2019 emissions modification per VW recall. I bought this vehicle less than a year ago. My son was driving to work when the car shut off without warning. He was able to restart it and park safely and had it towed home. After replacing the battery and a fuse, the car continued to show a code for the ECM Power Relay Load Circuit . We took it to the mechanic to have it inspected, and learned that the high pressure fuel pump had imploded and metal shavings were found throughout the entire fuel system. This is evidently a common and very costly issue that VW has an obligation to fix. They knowingly continue to use a defective part that is essentially a ticking time bomb without regard to the owners safety and the financial ramifications of the repair. All VW vehicles with this defect should be covered by VW, not just selected model years and models. This causes catastrophic damage and VW is completely negligent by not doing what is right by the customer. The VW dealer quoted a $9,000. repair and VW North America declined any assistance with the vehicle. The car is not worth that, and it would be absurd to pay out of pocket for the repair; especially since VW continues to use a defective designed HPFP that can eventually fail again. VW was selective in the model years that they recalled, but only after the parts failed. They should have applied the recall and repairs to ALL vehicles proactively. I now have a 2013 paperweight in my driveway. The reason I purchased this specific car was for the longevity that diesels are known for. What a shame that VW does not rectify the situation in lieu of the previous diesel scandal. I'll be going back to Volvo or Subaru, two companies that I have had great experiences with, both in safety and reliability. VW should do the right thing, but I guess that's of no importance anymore.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 3VW3L7AJ3DM
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION As I was accelerating to enter traffic on the expressway the engine lost partial power. I reduced accelerator pressure, and then the engine seemed to recover. I then reapplied pressure to the accelerator, and it seemed normal but when I put in the clutch to shift, the engine accelerated beyond redline. I completed the shift, and car began to accelerate rapidly. I tapped the accelerator, and the acceleration stopped, and then after about 3 seconds it began to accelerate again. I attempted to reduce acceleration with brakes, but it was only partially effective. The only way to effectively reduce acceleration was to take the car out of gear. (thankfully this was a manual transmission) When I shifted into neutral, engine RPMs would exceed redline. The excessive RPMs ultimately destroyed the engine (Big bang, lots of smoke). In hindsight I would have turned the ignition off but did not think to at the time.. The safety implications are obvious. This event occurred without warning and under normal driving conditions. I suspect an engine sensor anomaly combined with computer software failure. (Maybe an RPM sensor?) Specific cause is unknown, and situation cannot be recreated since the engine has failed. The Diesel Particulate Filter warning light was on, and had been on for several weeks. It did not clear using the recommended remediation in the manual. The vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer or other interested parties, but is available for inspection. (This is one of the vehicles recalled for “diesel-gate” purchased from VW after reprogramming)

- Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 3VWDZ7AJ9BM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Component/System Failure/Malfunction: ignition switch and starter, possibly transmission Yes, available for inspection upon request. Car has randomly stalled while in motion; ignition and starter switch have been replaced as well as microswitch panel - yet problem persists. Power steering shuts down, steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn. Have to put car in neutral, typically, and try to restart while in motion. Has happened over 100 times; replaced alternator as well. Battery was replaced, brand new, yet was drained multiple times - recharged at Autozone. Vehicle was brought to Larry H. Miller Volkswagen - was advised the problem was fixed, as well as recall repairs (microswitch), paid for the service, went to leave dealership and problem immediately happened again. Complete shut off. Would stay running a little longer while in neutral or AC on. When the vehicle stalls the only light that comes on is the battery light. All other lights and systems work. Ran diagnostic codes through personal mechanic, friend, and dealership... Code states "Key/Ignition/Computer" but unsure what specifically. The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta also does not have the original key fob. May be improper programming? Continued to research all other recalls, services have been completed and yet the problem persists.

- Summary: HI, I bought this 2014 VW Jetta with 87,000 miles on it for $12,000 from Conicelli Motors in Conshohocken, PA- Nov 2021. I put $8000 down and had $4000 left to pay on it. I kept up with my oil changes and everything. By Oct 2023, I am being told the engine needs to be replaced. I have let this car sit in the parking lot, and I am still making payments on it. There is no way this car should need a complete motor replacement. From a few mechanics, the cost for a motor to be replaces is about $12000. That is what I paid for the car. Looking at all the 2014 VW Jetta engine recalls, I believe VW is the issue. I don't see a recall with my VIN number, but there should have been one.

The electronics in this car are designed in such a way that check light resets can only be done by a dealer, and replacing the radios can be quite expensive. When I purchased my car with 80,000 miles, the check engine light would come on every time I started it, and the reset would only last for 2 weeks. After taking it to the dealer, I found out that they have the only computer that can reset it. While I would consider selling it back to VW if they offered, I would be hesitant to purchase another one.

If you are considering purchasing a Volkswagen, it is important to note that there are certain maintenance costs associated with the vehicle. For example, diagnosing engine issues may require a fee of $125, and fixing any problems is necessary to pass inspection. While other car companies may allow for resetting the light with small issues, Volkswagen requires payment for this service. As someone who has owned two Volkswagens, I have found that these small issues can become tiresome and costly. However, it is important to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of any vehicle before making a purchase decision.

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with a car I bought back in May 2011 in Wisconsin. Since then, I brought the car with me to Central Europe where I currently reside. I must say, the car has been very comfortable and has handled the many bad roads in our region with ease. However, I did encounter a small issue with the phone connection button on the steering wheel. It was poorly positioned and often pushed by accident, resulting in a blasting dial tone. Additionally, the rear gate and window collected dust and dirt quite easily. Despite these minor design flaws, I still enjoyed my time with the car. Unfortunately, I sold it 2 years ago at a significant loss, only to find out 3 months later about the Diesel Gate scandal. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with VW. Nonetheless, I hope this review helps you in your car search. Best regards!
