The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.

Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.

For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.

For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.

After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

Common 2013 Buick Regal problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2013 Buick Regal, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Ignition Key Stuck Due to Failed Shifter:
Owners have experienced issues with the ignition key getting stuck in the Buick Regal's ignition due to a failed shifter. This problem arises when the automatic transmission fails or when the wire relaying information about the gear position is faulty. Owners have reported that restarting the vehicle or manipulating the gears can temporarily resolve this issue.
  2. Stalling Due to Mass Air Flow or Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure:
Another common problem reported by owners is stalling while driving at various speeds due to failures in the mass air flow sensor (MAF) or crankshaft position sensor (CPS). This stalling can occur unexpectedly, even at highway speeds. Replacing the faulty sensor is the recommended solution, with replacement costs ranging from $20 to $70.
  3. Power Window Switches Malfunction:
Owners have encountered problems with the power windows in the Buick Regal, where the power window switches stop working. This issue has been found in models from 1990 to 2011. The cause of this problem is often attributed to a faulty switch. Fortunately, replacing the window switches is a more affordable solution compared to replacing the power window motor or regulator, with replacement costs ranging from $10 to $80.

These common problems with the 2013 Buick Regal can be frustrating for owners and may require timely attention to prevent further damage or inconvenience.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-02
  • VIN: 2G4GT5GV6D9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: There is condensation and moisture present inside the high definition front headlight assemblies, which causes the headlight illumination to be diminished and created a visibility hazard while driving at night. The vehicle was taken to the Ganley Chevrolet dealership who diagnosed that the front headlight assemblies were faulty and needed to be replaced. The cost to replace both is about $3,000. Then I went to Damper's Automotive of Cleveland Ohio for a second opinion and after replacing the bulb in the passenger side headlight, the bulb immediately blew. Based on complaints from other customers this is a known issue on low and high mileage vehicles of the same make and model. It's a astronomical cost to replace these assemblies and they could go out at any time while driving due to the trapped moisture and-or electrical wiring exposed behind the headlight.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-23
  • VIN: 2G4GT5GV4D9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
  • Summary: Left Headlamp Assembly and Driver’s Window Regulator were replaced under Warranty and now need replacing again! Trim Strips were replaced under Warranty because they were rusting and now they are all rusty again! Electrical System now blows fuses. 2103 Buick Regal Turbo just reached 60,000 miles. HOW MANY TIMES WILL I HAVE TO SPEND $2,000 TO FIX THE FAULTY LEFT HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY WHICH WAS GOING ON IN 2011 & 2012? There’s Complaints all over online!!!! I haven’t been able to go out at night for 6 months because of no front headlight!!!!! I have been to 3 Buick Dealers and they all have no idea how long this $2K light assembly will last because it should have been recalled!!! The lastest Buick Dealer was trying to steal my vehicle by saying the “Check Engine” light indicated that I am going to have all kinds of problems with my turbo or engine (he wasn’t sure what it was) and that my car was not worth keeping!!! I should get a new car! I asked him how much to take care of the engine problems and he said $3,500. So with the supposed engine problem & headlamp, that’s $5K. I SHOULD BUY A NEW CAR PER DIXIE BUICK IN FORT MYERS, FL!! The other Dealerships said it was likely just a sensor since the car was not running rough and there was no hurry to have the “Check Engine” Light looked at by their mechanics!!! They felt waiting 2 weeks until they could schedule an appointment for me was fine. BUICK NEEDS TO RECALL THEIR LEFT HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY WHICH WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM YEARS BEFORE MANUFACTURING THEIR 2013 REGALS AND GET RID OF THEIR SLEAZY RIPOFF SERVICE REP’S!!!

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-06
  • VIN: 2G4GT5GV4D9
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Left Headlamp Assembly and Driver’s Window Regulator were replaced under Warranty and now have reoccurred and both need replacing again. My car just reach 60K miles. This began 6 months ago so I haven’t been able to drive at night or during storms nor crack my window to talk to strangers. I am a Realtor and feel my safety is at risk. This headlight problem was going on in 2011 & 2012 yet Buick continued to use this headlamp assembly, knowing it fills with moisture then blows the bulb & fuse. With all the online Complaints, I am shocked that our government has not forced Buick to do a recall. I could kill someone or hit something with only one headlight!!!! Very concerned when my 4-year-old grandson is in my car too! Both problems are on the driver’s side and both keep reoccurring. The Headlight Assembly is almost $2K to replace. How many times am I going to have to pay for this reoccurring safety issue that Buick knew they should have redesigned years earlier? I may be reached at: [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-16
  • VIN: 2g4gs5evxd9
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I made a right hand turn on a 25 mph street in my vehicle and the butt end of my vehicle kicked out and i temporarily lost control of my vehicle. I then heard a high pitch squealing and a thud. I was able to gain control of my vehicle and safely pull into a parking lot where my i saw my rear pass side tire jammed into the wheel well. I had my vehicle towed to the dealership Classic Painesville as it is under warranty. I found out that the toe link fractured due to corrosion and bent the passenger side trailing arm when it snapped. My warranty company will not cover the 1650 dollar repair due to corrosion, and the dealership will not cover the safety recall since my VIN is not listed under the recall notice. I pointed out that the General motors website motorsafety.org provides details on the "salt belt: area concerning this same issue. 2012 – 2013 Buick Regal 2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2010 – 2013 Buick Lacrosse Recall summary The recall concerns the toe links at the rear underside of the car, which hold the rear wheels straight. The toe links are coated to protect them from road debris and corrosion, but the supplier applied too much coating, paradoxically making the protective layer more likely to chip off. GM has issued the recall in specific states in the “Salt Belt,” where salt is used to de-ice roads in the winter. Without their protective coating, salt can corrode the metal toe links and cause them to break. The recall will include models that were sold or ever registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. My vehicle had no previous issues and was just into the dealership for an oil, change-tire rotation and a 50 point inspection 2 wks ago. There were no warning and the failure was sudden.

  • Summary: The car runs fine right up until it doesn't. You can be driving down the highway and all of a sudden lights start flashing on and off and it dies completely and slams on the breaks all at once! It's dangerous especially in the dark! You have no flashers or breaklights to warn other cars you are even there! Sometimes it won't even start setting in the driveway. You just have to wait a little bit and then the car will start up like nothing ever happened. I've seen recalls on other Buicks for the same thing but mine isn't on the recall list. This car is gonna get someone killed! We are afraid to sell it because we don't want someone else to get hurt! We have taken it to two different mechanics and they couldn't find anything wrong with it except the first mechanic cleared out 23 control module codes.

2021-12-22
  • Manufacturer: General Motors, LLC
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Buick Lacrosse, 2012-2013 Buick Regal, and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles sold or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, or Wisconsin. If one of the two front turn signal bulbs burn out in either front turn signal lamp, there is no indication to the driver. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
  • Consequence: If the driver is not aware that a turn signal is not functioning properly, the driver may continue to drive the vehicle. If half of a front turn signal is not illuminating, other driver's may not be aware that the affected vehicle is turning, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, dealers will update the body control module software, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Buick at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 12212.

I bought my 2013 Regal used in 2016, and have since spent $3,000 on repairs. It's a very comfortable car that impresses my clients. However, I have had some issues with it being a bit of a money pit. As a result, I have decided that I will not be purchasing another Buick in the future.

Hey there! I recently got my first American car after driving Toyotas and Nissans for years. I was looking for a 6-speed coupe with leather seats and a sunroof, and after some research, I stumbled upon the Buick Regal with its 6-speed turbo. I did a lot of consumer research before purchasing, and everything seemed positive. However, after 2 years, I've had a few issues. The MPG hasn't been as good as the EPA estimates, and there's some turbo lag in lower gears. I also had to replace the front axle and wheel bearing at 30k, but luckily it was covered by the CPO warranty. Unfortunately, the trunk light fixture failed at 30k and wasn't covered. The GPS SD card fails intermittently, and the Bluetooth will randomly disconnect from my Android. The lack of a rear camera at this price point is surprising, and the rear trunk will randomly fail to open. The OEM carpeted floor mats are pretty thin and low quality, and the interior lights will sometimes fail when opening the car doors in a dark garage. The passenger visor tension rod failed at 40k and couldn't be repaired, so I had to pay $120 for a replacement. The driver's side seat heater also failed at 57k, and the stereo IQ reverts to default settings once the car is turned off. The biggest issue was when I received 2 CEL codes accompanied by loss of power, white exhaust, and rough idle at 50k. Unfortunately, the warranty had expired due to the date of the vehicle's initial title, so I had to pay $900 to replace the fuel injectors. The dealer advised that the white smoke from the exhaust may be due to a cracked piston, which was a bit concerning. Overall, I still enjoy driving my Buick Regal, but I hope these issues can be resolved in the future.I received two different CEL codes within 24 hours and brought my vehicle back to the local dealer. Despite the fact that they were in the process of going out of business, they checked the vehicle and advised me that the problem was not the throttle body as indicated. They suggested I bring it to another dealer for a deep dive. After two days, the dealer called and advised me that I needed a new engine or a complete rebuild, as there was no oil in the pan and it was throughout the system. GM refused to extend the expired warranty, despite my arguments regarding the low mileage. Finally, they agreed to meet me halfway and the engine rebuild subsequently cost me $3300, on top of the $900 I had just spent on the initial problem. However, the car now drives beautifully, as one might expect after this type of spend. The handling and ride have always been top-notch, and the design is clearly a head-turner. The ultimate problem here is GM's second-string engineering and failure to stand by their products. This will be my last purchase, especially with the stellar reviews on the redesigned Mazda6 turbos. UPDATE: 40k later, the engine runs beautifully. I recently had a major issue with the ABS module replacement, despite the fact that these were designed to last a lifetime of the vehicle from what I've learned. I discovered that the rear hub assembly was also faulty and after the ECU reflash, the total exceeded $1,200. The vehicle is now at 97K and I just cannot imagine what would lie ahead if I decided to drive into my typical 150k range. If GM finally stops swirling the drain and goes completely belly up during my lifetime, I will certainly know why. The vehicle was traded in at 97K, but not before the entertainment system would un-pair my cell phone. When I attempted to re-pair it, I received the message I was lucky enough to receive the maximum trade-in value for my vehicle. However, the best part is the peace of mind I get every day when I go down to my garage and don't have to worry about what could go wrong.

Although I had a few issues with this car, my overall driving experience was pleasant. Unfortunately, I encountered some problems with the wheel bearing and a recall was necessary. Additionally, I had some trouble with the front seat, which the dealership tried to fix multiple times but unfortunately, it never worked properly. Despite these issues, the dealership staff were always friendly and helpful. However, I did experience some problems with the lumbar support and seat heater, which were eventually resolved. I did have to make multiple appointments for these issues, but the dealership staff were always accommodating. Unfortunately, the warranty eventually expired and I was unable to take it anywhere else for repairs. I would like to caution others about the potential security risks of having a car connected to the internet. Overall, I had a positive experience with this car, but I will be exploring other options in the future.

If you're looking for a car with a strong motor, it's best to avoid the Regal. The 4-cylinder engine and cheap plastic accents don't do it any favors. You might want to consider a KIA instead, which is not only cheaper but also comes with a better warranty. Plus, it's faster too!

I purchased this car in January 2015 with a little over 38,000 miles on it. After 4 years of ownership, I have driven over 97,000 miles. The car is comfortable on trips of about 1 to 2 hours, but I find myself attempting to find a comfortable setting for the lumbar support on longer trips. The acceleration is really good, and it even accelerates well at higher speeds. It’s very nimble in corners and has a decent 0-60. The heated seats are a dream in the winter. Driving in the winter is good, just don’t go crazy. The stock tires are excellent and lasted until 2018, or 7 years since the car was originally leased in Oct 2011. However, as the car ages, issues with quality start to stand out. At 43,000 miles, the left rear wheel bearing went out, and by 80k miles, all 4 bearings had been replaced. I’ve had both the intake and exhaust actuators replaced, a compressor, and belt tensioner. I just had the struts replaced and will soon replace the shocks. I also need sway bar endlinks and a new caliper. Spark plugs last about 30k to 60k miles, and the owner's manual says to replace them at 150k, but I needed them at 60k because they were misfiring so badly. Now they are misfiring again. Other than normal maintenance, the car is okay. If you get one that has over 70k miles, make sure the spark plugs, engine air filter, cabin air filter, and all fluids and belts are in good condition. Most of the repairs are easy if you want to avoid paying for labor. Overall, this car has been a good purchase, but it's important to keep up with maintenance as it ages.

Positive 2013 Buick Regal car reviews

I bought this car as a CPO from a dealer with 29k miles on it. After 6 years of ownership, it now has 143k miles on it. The engine and transmission have been flawless. I have only done oil, fluid, and filter changes as recommended. The car is smooth, quiet, comfortable, and has sporty looks with very good performance with the 2.0 turbo. I have regularly achieved over 30mpg until I put Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires on this past winter. The tires have awesome traction, but mileage dropped about 3 mpg overall. The only real issue I have had is with the wheel bearings. They won't last over 100k. When you get them replaced, make sure to get the hub that has the Timken bearings. It's a poor design, very difficult to remove, and the cheap replacement bearings may only last about 15 to 25k. Get Timkens!!! Update 21 Oct 2022: The Regal continues to run great with over 162k miles. Still no issues with burning oil. I've changed the transmission fluid several times over the years. I currently drive 30k miles a year commuting to work (162 miles round trip). I average 29 MPG with mostly highway driving. Recently, I changed another wheel bearing, brakes all around, and put on new rear shocks (Michigan roads destroyed the original shocks, but they were 9 years old). I still love this car! Update 4/21/23 - I gave this car to my son with 177k miles on it. It does not burn oil, rides and drives great, and the engine still has fantastic power. I would gladly buy another one, but I bought a pickup truck to do truck stuff.

This Buick is really impressive! Although it may not be a GNX or T-Type of the late 80's, the 2.0L engine is surprisingly powerful. It doesn't knock your head back with mad torque; instead, the power builds quickly and can get away from you fast if you're not careful. I average 30-34 mpg daily, and I have a 17-mile commute to work, of which 14 is highway. I get away with mid-grade fuel and get better gas mileage than with premium. I would do better if I could get away from the ethanol gas stations. The seats are very comfortable, and visibility is great out the windshield. However, the rear view is a different story. The rake needs a greater angle or a rearview backup camera. Overall, this is a great sporty car with decent power.

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the 2012 Regal GS with 6MT. As someone who has been in the car business for 10 years and has had 21 new vehicles, it's clear that you have a lot of experience and knowledge. The Regal GS seems to be a standout among all the cars you've owned, with its amazing looks, great handling, powerful performance, and comfortable ride. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

You put 300,000 miles on your Buick Regal, that's amazing! It's such a reliable car. You bought it pre-owned with only 20,000 miles and it's still going strong. Even when the timing belt went last month, it only cost about $700 to fix. It's clear that you love your Regal and hopefully, when it does eventually die, you'll be able to afford a new one.

Firstly, I want to say that Buick has done an amazing job with this model, especially considering the price point. The luxurious seats provide a comfortable and snug fit, and the interior layout more than makes up for any minor flaws in the car. As someone who has owned three vehicles, including a Chevy HHR, I can confidently say that the good aspects of this car far outweigh the bad. However, it's worth noting that the shiny chrome cover surrounding the gear shifter can reflect light and be distracting, so be cautious when driving. Additionally, as someone who is 5'8'' and 190lbs, I have occasionally bumped into the lower part of the dash when getting into the car. Despite this, the car is still comfortable and enjoyable to drive. The acceleration may have some resistance due to the eAssist concept of efficiency over power, but it's not a deal breaker. While the media center in the dash can sometimes freeze or display incorrect information, this has only happened a handful of times in the 7 months that I've owned the car. The lack of trunk space is a downside, as the eAssist battery takes up a quarter of the trunk, but the rear seats do fold down for additional storage. Finally, while some of the threads on the back of the driver's seat are coming loose, this is a minor issue that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the car.The pieces of leather are separating, revealing a view of about 3 cm into the darkness inside the seat. Additionally, the matte material on the door panel (covering window switches and pieces on the steering wheel) has begun to chip. Although I'm not sure what the previous owner did to cause this, it's not pleasing to the eye. The matte material is brown and underneath is black, which can make the car look cheap when looked at closely. However, it's fortunate that it doesn't flake up and only gets bigger when scratched (which I assure you, will be kept to an absolute minimum). Overall, I don't have many issues with the car, and those I do have are mostly cosmetic (other than the lack of acceleration, but I didn't buy it for power). I love taking my Regal on short drives to the grocery store or even hours away to a nearby city. So far, the Regal hasn't failed me and has even surpassed my own first impression/standards of the car. I'm excited for the years to come with her!
