1996 Subaru Impreza problems
The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.
Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.
Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.
A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues with your 1996 Impreza since you bought it 8 1/2 years ago. With all the snow in Virginia, having AWD is definitely a must! I understand that you're considering getting a newer Subaru and may need to sell this one, which can be tough. I noticed that the tires wear out quicker and the road noise can be loud at times, but overall it sounds like you've had a great experience with your Impreza!

I got this car as a college graduation gift in spring of 1996. It has been a reliable workhorse since. It has taken the abuse of Midwestern snow and ice, and well as tackled storms in Colorado. I just passed 144,000 miles this week. I would definitely recommend a Subaru to anyone who values quality and reliability.

This is an excellent car for a first-time buyer or a student. The boxer-4 engine performs like many small V-6 engines, and the handling is fantastic. I have had no issues with the car, except for normal replacements due to the high mileage on my car. (The car has 107,000 miles on it, and everything is still original besides the brakes and fuel lines - which were recently replaced).

The 1.8L engine, paired with the 5-speed transmission and AWD, provides adequate power. While it may not be a thrilling ride off the line, it has plenty of passing power at highway speeds. The AWD is especially useful in rainy or snowy conditions, providing a stable and confident driving experience. The back seat comfortably seats two people. The only downside is the gearbox, as the 1, 3, and 5 gears are spaced far apart and take some getting used to. However, the Impreza handles excellently and is a reliable car worth considering. With its variety of body styles, including wagon, sedan, and coupe, you can easily find a car that suits your needs.

This car has been a dream for me! It always runs smoothly and never slides. I drive it all the time and rarely go under 40, which makes the AWD a life saver.

I absolutely adore Imprezas, having owned two myself. Although the interior and stereo of my current one leave something to be desired (an 85w cassette player and 4 paper cone filters, one of which was blown), I've upgraded to 4 new Pioneer speakers, a 10

The AWD is a great feature, but it may not be necessary for those living in climates with shorter winters. It's important to note that parts can be expensive, especially in the USA, and some may only be available from the dealer. Additionally, the AWD requires frequent alignment checks, and may become misaligned sporadically. I purchased my vehicle at 99K miles and it currently has 150K miles. While I have enjoyed driving it, the frequency and cost of maintenance, as well as the risk of it breaking down unexpectedly, is making me consider replacing it. The suspension is quite sensitive and can make even small bumps in the road feel jarring. Lastly, the cup holder is located in a less than ideal spot, as it can cover dashboard controls when in use.

I purchased this Subaru for $1700.00 when it had 175,000 miles on it. Since then, it has covered 204,000 miles. With winter force tires, this car can outperform any 4WD truck in the snow. I have done some brake work and replaced the timing belt, but there is some rust showing over the rear tires that needs attention. Currently, the Impreza requires two new rear struts (costing $500) and the transmission has a bearing issue, which will cost $1000 with a new clutch kit. I am considering doing the repairs myself as I prefer to avoid car payments. To check if a (manual) transmission bearing is starting to fail, start the car, put the transmission in neutral, push in the clutch, and listen for any unusual noises. If the engine is quiet at idle with the clutch engaged compared to when it is disengaged, there may be a bearing issue.
