2015 Bmw I3 problems
The BMW i3 is an electric car that was manufactured by German marque BMW from 2013 to 2022. The i3 was BMW's first mass-produced zero emissions vehicle and was launched as part of BMW's electric vehicle BMW i sub-brand. It is a B-segment, high-roof hatchback with an electric powertrain. Styled by Richard Kim, the i3 is a five-door with a passenger module of high strength, ultra-lightweight carbon fibre reinforced polymer adhered to an aluminium chassis, battery, drive system and powertrain. The body features two clamshell rear-hinged rear doors.
The i3 debuted as a concept at the 2011 International Motor Show Germany, and production began in September 2013 in Leipzig.
It ranked third amongst electric cars sold worldwide from 2014 to 2016. Its global sales totaled 250,000 units by the end of 2022. Germany was its biggest market with over 47,500 units delivered through December 2021, followed by the U.S. with over 45,000.
The i3 won two World Car of the Year Awards, selected as 2014 World Green Car of the Year and as 2014 World Car Design of the Year. The i3 received an iF Product Design Gold Award, and won UK Car of the Year 2014 and Best Supermini of 2014 in the first UK Car of the Year Awards.

I was in the middle of the highway and the car shut down. I had to rapidly get to the side in order to not be impacted by the people traveling behind me. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the problem was confirmed by Autogermana (Authorized Dealer in Puerto Rico). Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The car didn't have any alerts visible related to this problem as my best knowledge allows me.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-15
- VIN: WBY1Z2C57FV
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I am the owner of my BMWi3. We live in a retirement community in Florida and it is the perfect vehicle for driving the short commutes of our daily activities. December 27, 2020 I ordered (from Amazon) SUNTUE Buckles Extender,Universal Fit for 7/8'' Metal Tongue, Extension Socket Connector with E11 Safety Certified -2 Pack. The purpose was to make it easier to fasten the seat belts. We are in our 70’s and it is difficult to reach down to fasten the belt. Our fingers are not as nimble as when we were young. I installed them in mid-January 2021 and a few days later the message appeared: “Driver restraint system malfunction. Continue wearing safety belt. Consult nearest service center.” Shortly after the warning appeared, I removed the extenders and thought the warning would go away. However, it continued to appear. After seeing the message for several months, I called BMW for an appointment to clear the message. September 23, 2021, I paid $160.10 for a diagnostic test, and the BMW Service Advisor told me the SRS – Airbag Driver Front: high resistance in driver airbag must be replaced. He assured me the problem is NOT related to the seat belt extenders. The advisor said the air bag would have to be ordered and gave an estimate of over $1,300. I had to sign papers stating the airbag is not safe. I searched on-line for other BMWi3 owners who have had similar experiences. I found that some other owners have had the airbag message. I then searched for “replacement of air bags” and was surprised to find that it is rarely necessary to replace the bags “because they won’t wear out.” My BMW has 35,600 miles; it is always garaged, and has not been in an accident, therefore, I do not understand what would cause my airbag system to indicate it must be replaced.

The car wanted to veer out of the lane and required force to keep it in the lane. After turning the car off and back on, the car steering returned to normal. This event happens sporadically, about once a month. While the steering can be overpowered to keep the car on course, this can be very dangerous if you are not expecting it.

THIS IS A DESIGN LIMITATION, BUT NOT THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN ACC DEACTIVATES, THE CAR IMMEDIATELY GOES INTO FULL REGEN BRAKING WITHOUT WARNING. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS IS A SUDDEN AND SIGNIFICANT DECELERATION THAT POSES A SAFETY HAZARD (BEING REAR ENDED).
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-01
- VIN: WBY1Z2C51FV
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: STEERING BECOMES LOPSIDED, IT'S LOOSE TO TURN ONE WAY, AND HARD TO TURN THE OTHER WAY, AS IF ONE OF THE FRONT TIRES IS FLAT. THE CAR WILL TEND TO VEER LEFT OR RIGHT, AND I HAVE TO PULL HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO KEEP IT GOING STRAIGHT. THERE IS NO CONSISTENCY AS TO WHETHER IT VEERS LEFT OR RIGHT, AND THE DIRECTION CHANGES INTERMITTENTLY. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ALSO INTERMITTENTLY, SOMETIMES EVERY FEW DAYS OR EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON RESOLVES THE PROBLEM, BUT THEN THE SAME PROBLEM EVENTUALLY OCCURS AGAIN SOMETIME LATER. THIS IS MOST LIKELY A SOFTWARE ISSUE. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME BEHAVIOR ON I3'S ONLINE AND ON NHTSA WEBSITE. THIS IS CLEARLY A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, AND BMW SHOULD ADDRESS IT RIGHT AWAY. *TR

THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT BMW OF LAS VEGAS. I READ ONLINE WHERE MANY OTHER I3 OWNERS WERE EXPERIENCING SIMILAR ISSUES. MANY HAVE REPORTED THAT THE ISSUE MAY BE SOFTWARE RELATED AND DIFFICULT TO REPRODUCE AS IT HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY AND SHUTTING OFF THE CAR CAN RESET IT GIVING A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY UNTIL THE NEXT TIME IT HAPPENS.

It sounds like you've had a bit of trouble with your car in the first few years. I hope everything is running smoothly now! You've put a lot of miles on it, which is impressive. It's great to hear that it's roomy and drives well. It's good news that the electronic issues seem to have been resolved in the last 2 years.

I have the base model without range extender, but I absolutely love using it as my commuter car around the city with chargers on each end. While it may not be practical for a weekend trip outside the range, it's perfect for my daily commute to and from work (32 miles each way). The exterior is funky and awesome, and the interior build quality is eco-luxury. I especially love the carbon fiber details and the eco-leather on the seats. The accent lighting is a nice touch and makes me feel like I'm driving a spaceship. I'm also impressed with BMW's commitment to the electric car movement, as they are creating new manufacturing and technology to build them. It's clear that this is not just a compliance car here!

I've had my 2014 BMW i3 Tera World, affectionately named Heidi3, for a year now and I couldn't be happier. Despite facing extreme temperatures and even having to replace her windshield due to a rock from a truck, I still feel nothing but love for my ride. I enjoy cruising around the city and county in her, and if I ever need a top-up charge, I can easily find a hotel with a FREE charging station. I never feel anxious or worried about being stranded somewhere. While I wish more gas stations would offer charging stations for BMWs, I'm content with charging her at home in my carport every other day before bed and waking up to a fully charged car. I love the attention she gets, with people taking pictures and admiring her unique design. I also enjoy showing off her speed, surprising even the most skeptical drivers. Out of all the cars I've owned, including an Eddie Bauer Expedition, Lexus GS350, Land Rover Discovery, Volvo XC90, Mercedes R350, BMW Z4, and a Fiat 500, my i3 is hands down my favorite. I plan on keeping her forever and upgrading her battery when the time comes. For now, I wouldn't change a thing.

Comfortable, fast, and very affordable to own and maintain.
-
I love everything about the car, it's very eco-friendly. Thank you so much!

As for the design of the car, we understand that it may not be suitable for everyone, but we stand behind our innovative and eco-friendly approach to transportation. Thank you for choosing BMW.Cleaning the outside of this car can be a real challenge due to its many panels and shapes. Additionally, the rear windows do not roll down, which can be disappointing. The unique, skinny tires can make the car feel unstable when encountering smooth bumps in the road, such as railroad track crossings, and even worse when it's wet outside. It's important to avoid speeding around corners with these tires. While the car may look impressive in the showroom, it has many shortcomings that become apparent in the real world. Overall, my experience with this BMW has been disappointing and I would not choose to own or lease one again. It's clear that a high price does not necessarily equate to a well-built car.

This is a great car for commuting in the city, especially for 1 or 2 persons. However, in cold weather states like Minnesota, it's important to note that the car only has a range of about 40 miles without the Range Extender. While it's not meant for high-speed continuous driving in cold weather, it's still a very usable car for city streets with its small size, great visibility, and stop-and-go traffic. The unique and attention-getting style, along with all the technology and electric mileage, make it a great choice for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint. It's unfortunate that the car has had some reliability issues, with over $5k in warranty work in the first 25k miles, but the warranty service at BMW Motowerks is exceptional. The car has a stiff ride and sensitive steering, and the adaptive cruise control can disengage frequently, but overall it's a great car for city driving. The suicide doors may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for two persons, it's fine. It's a shame that there's no heated steering wheel, though.

I am currently in a difficult situation waiting for BMW to buy back my car, which has been in the shop for over six months. Despite the challenges, I am confident that BMW North America will take the necessary steps to resolve this issue. While my experience has been frustrating, I believe that BMW is a reputable company that values its customers and will work to find a satisfactory solution. I would caution potential buyers to carefully consider their options before purchasing this particular model, but I remain confident in BMW's commitment to quality and customer service.

I recently purchased a car that I was really excited about. However, when I got it home, I realized that it would take 20 hours to charge fully, which was longer than I expected. Additionally, the car only ran for about 100 miles on a single charge. I was disappointed to learn that the BMW chargers cost around $6,000 and that other chargers could potentially damage the car's system. Due to these unexpected costs, my partner and I decided to return the car. Unfortunately, on our way back to the dealership, we experienced a blown tire which was a bit of a setback. We learned that tire insurance is a good investment, especially since the low profile of the tires means they don't last very long. Although this experience was frustrating, I am grateful for the lessons learned and will take them into consideration for future purchases.
