The Porsche 911 (pronounced Nine Eleven or in German: Neunelf) is a two-door 2+2 high performance rear-engined sports car introduced in September 1964 by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. It has a rear-mounted flat-six engine and originally a torsion bar suspension. The car has been continuously enhanced through the years but the basic concept has remained unchanged. The engines were air-cooled until the introduction of the 996 series in 1998.

The 911 has been raced extensively by private and factory teams, in a variety of classes. It is among the most successful competition cars. In the mid-1970s, the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera RSR won world championship races including Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Daytona. The 911-derived 935 turbo also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. Porsche won the World Championship for Makes in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979 with 911-derived models.

In a 1999 poll to determine the Car of the Century, the 911 was fifth. It is one of two in the top five that had remained continuously in production (the original Beetle remained in production until 2003). The one millionth example was manufactured in May 2017 and is in the company's permanent collection.

Summary: DRIVING NORMALLY. LOSS OF POWER. MESSAGE INDICATED REDUCED ENGINE POWE OK TO DRIVE. TRIED TO PULL OVER TO SHOULDER. CAR STALLS IN MIDDLE OF HIGH TRAFFIC HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY. SMOKE APPEARED. COULD NOT GET OUT OF CAR FOR FEAR OF BEING HIT. AT SAME TIME WORRIED ABOUT BEING REAR ENDED. SMOKE THICKENS. FLAMES OUT OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT BUT I DID SEE IT. ALMOST REAR ENDED. PERSON STOPPED AND GOT ME OUT OF THE CAR. A MINUTE LATER FLAMES BUILD AND PENETRATE FIRE WALL. QUICKLY SPREAD TO INTERIOR AND THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. 1 MINUTE MORE IN THE CAR AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN BURNT OR DEAD. SHAMED IF I WAS REAR ENDED. DANGEROUS AND TRAUMATIC.

Summary: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (Porsche) is recalling certain model year 2014 Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman, Cayman S and 911 Carrera (S, Cabriolet, S Cabriolet, 4, 4S, 4 Cabriolet, 4s Cabriolet) vehicles manufactured September 2, 2013, through September 23, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the passenger seats may be equipped with defective wiring harnesses resulting in intermittent contact with the harness plug.
Consequence: The intermittent plug may cause the passenger seat frontal and knee airbags may be deactivated. In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, this may increase the risk of injury to the front passenger.
Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat free of charge. The recall began on December 11, 2013. Owners may contact Porsche at 1-770-290-3500. Porsche's recall number is AD04.
