Common Nissan Nv200 problems

The Nissan NV200 is a popular light commercial van known for its four or five doors and impressive gas mileage. While it has many positive aspects, there are some common problems that owners have reported.

One common issue is faulty engine sensors, which can lead to a variety of problems. For example, dirty engine coolant and poor lubrication can cause engine damage, and faulty engine sensors can also lead to issues with the transmission system.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the sliding doors getting stuck, airbag issues, and faulty Evaporative Emissions Control systems.

There were also recalls for models produced in early 2010 regarding brake issues, diesel models produced between April and May 2017 concerning an ineffective internal ignition switch, and models made between July and September 2019 concerning the welded joint on the park lock actuator plate being poor quality.

Despite these issues, the Nissan NV200 has a reliability rating of four out of five, which is quite high compared to many other commercial vans. It's important to note that these issues are not necessarily indicative of widespread problems with the NV200, but rather isolated incidents reported by some owners. However, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.

How many miles will a NV200 last?

What is the life expectancy of a Nissan NV200? You can expect an absolute minimum of 100,000 miles from your NV200 but in reality they often last much longer, up to 300,000 miles without major issues, providing you maintain it properly. Is the Nissan NV200 a good van?

Is the Nissan NV200 any good? The Nissan NV200 will suit those who want a van that is familiar to drive for those more used to being behind the wheel of a car. It lacks a bit on the style front, but it more than makes up for it in how useful it is. It's a good all-round small van.

  • VIN: 5bzaf0aa4dn
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My wife stoped on the side of the road to talk with my son who was sitting in the front passenger seat. When my wife shut the door behind him all of the side curtain airbags deployed on the passenger side of the van. Three of my other children were inside the van when the bags depoyed. The two youngest 10, and 11, were sitting in the middle and were not hit with the bags. The oldest 14 was sittning next to the wall and was hit by the bags. There was no accident or impact that would have set the airbags off except the shutting of the front passenger door. The van is currently at Mossy Nissan in Houston TX and availible for inspection. We have filed with Nissan Corperate and they are opening an investigation. No warning lamps were present except a check engine light and low tire air pressure. Mossy nissan has supposedly ran a diagnostics on the van but have not told us the results. We are not confident that the dealership will be honest and forthcoming with information. When we brought the vehicle in we were met with skeptisism that we were being honest. Comments were overheard by my wife that were not appropriate to the situation.

Nissan Nv200 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-09
  • Date Complaint: 2021-11-10
  • VIN: 3N6CM0KN7GK
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 1. On September 9, 2021, my 2016 NV 200 suddenly and unexpectedly broke down in Gila Bend AZ on a trip from the Bay Area to Austin to visit my grandchild. After refueling and pulling back onto the road towards the Interstate 8 on-ramp, the vehicle suddenly died. It was extremely difficult to steer it towards the side of the road and the ignition was inoperable. 2. I was unable to get the vehicle completely off the road and semi's were honking at me because I was dangerously in their path. There could easily have been a collision. I called 911 and the Arizona State Troopers pushed it all the way onto the shoulder. I then had it towed to the Tempe Nissan dealership 3. The problem was diagnosed by Tempe Nissan. It appeared that the cause of the breakdown was a blown fuel pump fuse. They also replaced the battery. They attempted to do a wheel alignment but could not because the inner tie rod was bent so they also replaced the steering rack to bring the alignment back to factory specs. 4. It appears that the fuses and perhaps the fuel pump are defective, and that the locked steering led to the additional issues of the bent tie rod, steering rack and alignment, resulting in an unsafe and undrivable vehicle. 5. The vehicle and component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. The vehicle is routinely inspected by my regular mechanic on pre & post trip checks. 6. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The vehicle has had zero issues prior to this failure. 7. The vehicle and components are available for inspection upon request. 8. For a vehicle that is less than 5 years old to suddenly and unexpectedly become inoperable resulted in a frightening and potentially fatal incident for which Nissan is responsible.

  • Summary: My passenger airbag light has been on ever since I've owned this vehicle starting January of 2019. I see there has been an open recall on this since May of 2016, which means it hasn't been solved in over 5 years. I feel less comfortable about driving my partner around in my van knowing her airbag may not go off in the event of an accident.

Latest negative Nissan Nv200 car reviews

  1. Kameron Padberg 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2021

The NV200 has had some issues, including the rusted out catalytic converter after 3 years and the need for custom euro-style tires. Additionally, the suspension may struggle with heavier loads. However, we are confident in our ability to address these challenges and provide a reliable and efficient vehicle for our customers.

  2. Donny Crist 2024-11-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

Just a friendly reminder for those who own a Nissan NV 200, the transmission neutral safety switch may need to be replaced after approximately 120,000 miles. Unfortunately, Nissan does not sell the switch separately, and instead requires you to purchase a rebuilt transmission from them, which can cost up to $4500. I understand that this can be frustrating, as I have also experienced difficulty in obtaining the part from various Nissan dealerships and even Nissan Corporate Customer Service. It is important to note that a new transmission comes with a 12-month, 12,000-mile warranty and must be installed by a Nissan dealership. Please take care when driving, as a malfunctioning transmission can cause significant damage.

  3. Lorenzo Wunsch 2024-11-12

    Vehicle year: 2016

It is very golf cart like but it get the job done. I have owned it for about a year and put 15000 miles on it. I carry about 400 lbs in the rear for work. No problem getting around with it loaded. The problem is the rear axle and tires. The camber is off on both side and it has chewed up the tires. there is no adjustment and the dealer says its in spec, and also that I need to replace the tires because they are chewed up. They want $200 ea for tires.

  4. Darrick Mueller 2024-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2014

Your golf cart-like vehicle may not be the most perfect, but it certainly gets the job done! I have owned it for a year now and have put 15000 miles on it. Even when carrying a heavy load of 400 lbs in the rear for work, it has no problem getting around. However, I have noticed an issue with the rear axle and tires. The camber is off on both sides, which has caused the tires to wear out quickly. Unfortunately, there is no adjustment available, and the dealer claims that it is within specifications. They have also suggested that I replace the tires, which are quite expensive at $200 each.

If you're considering buying from dealers, it's important to do your research and test drive each van. We were pleasantly surprised by how distinct the Nissan is from the Ford and the Ram, despite all three being mini cargo vans. Watching Youtube videos on negotiation can be incredibly helpful. We were amazed at how much we learned in such a short period of time.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new NV200! It sounds like it handles really well and gets great mileage, even at high speeds and on hills. Your first road trip sounds like it was a success, both on the highway and in the city!

I recently looked at the new NV200 while my current one was being serviced. Although it was nice, it was basically unchanged. The retained value of the older model was shown to me, and the trade-in value dropping and retail price rising will be the primary decision maker. However, my 2013 model is still meeting all my needs. Even with the fall 2018 additions, it is still the best for my load and use. The only issues I have encountered are the reflection and position of the instrumentation, which make direct reading dangerous (eyes away from road), and audio drop out forces reSYNC. Additionally, the 'butt locking' feature is inconvenient, and it still seems that the vehicle auto locks overnight (but it may be my fault). The age of the vehicle is prompting me to shop for a replacement, and it will definitely be an NV200 2018 update. I load and unload an average of 4 times each week and am getting older, so I appreciate the low loading deck every time. I had to add more cushioning for my passenger (wife), so I will look for a better passenger seat in the next NV200, and maybe a single passenger seat (my load has room for that). After 4 years, I am still glad to have the NV200. The lowest floor height makes lifting and loading easy, especially for the elderly. I purchased it exclusively for that feature and can confirm that tire life is very short (20-23,000 miles). However, there are tires by others that meet Nissan specs for less money. I paid an independent specialty alignment shop to electronically check the alignment and found (as others have) that there is a misalignment in the rear wheels, and in their opinion, the alignment is contributing to premature tire wear. I will address this with the Nissan dealership, but the specialty shop could not identify any means to adjust rear alignment. I checked for a competitive brand to extend tire life, but nothing beats the loading height of the NV200. As a light load, low mileage user, I still know that for my needs, I can find nothing better! In an update, I added LEDs around the inside and tapped into the rear (small) interior light to avoid loading in the dark. It's something I should have recognized the shortcoming and had it professionally installed at purchase. Still, it's the best vehicle I've ever had to meet my needs. Even with Covid slowing down my use, I'm still completely satisfied with it after 12000 miles. I'm hoping the new European version will be available in the US for my next trade. Unfortunately, this model has been discontinued in the USA.
