1994 Mercury Grand marquis problems
The Mercury Grand Marquis is an automobile that was produced by Mercury from the 1975 until 2011 model years. Introduced as the flagship sub-model of the Mercury Marquis in 1975, the Grand Marquis became a stand-alone model line in 1983, serving as the largest Mercury sedan. The model line served as the sedan counterpart of the Mercury Colony Park station wagon up to 1991. The fourth generation was the basis of the 2003 and 2004 Mercury Marauder.
From 1979 until 2011, the Grand Marquis shared the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Panther platform with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria (Ford Crown Victoria after 1992), and from 1980, the Lincoln Town Car. For over three decades, the Ford and Mercury sedans were functionally identical, with two of the three generations of the model line sharing the same roofline. The Grand Marquis was available as a four-door sedan for nearly its entire run; from 1988 to its final year in 2011, it was the only body style that was offered. A four-door hardtop was available from 1975 to 1978 and a two-door hardtop coupe from 1975 to 1987.
The Grand Marquis was the second-best-selling Mercury line (after the Cougar) with 2.7 million units produced; at 36 years of continuous production, the Grand Marquis was the longest-running Mercury nameplate (the Cougar, 34 years). Ford manufactured the Grand Marquis, alongside the Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marauder, Ford (LTD) Crown Victoria, and (beginning in 2007) the Lincoln Town Car, at two facilities: the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri (1979-1985) and the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada (1986-2011).
Ford announced the discontinuation of the Mercury brand in 2010, but a few 2011 model-year Mercurys were made. The last Grand Marquis - and the final Mercury branded car - was produced on January 4, 2011, at St. Thomas Assembly.

Common 1994 Mercury Grand marquis problems
The Mercury Grand Marquis, produced from 1975 to 2011, is generally known for its reliability and decent ratio of price and quality. Although Ford scheduled a recall in 2013 to address this problem, it was a significant concern for many Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria owners.
Another common issue is related to visibility, specifically with the windshield. Drivers have reported premature cracks, which can be troublesome and potentially dangerous. A recall was issued in 2006 to fix this issue, but it is still essential to pay attention to windshield wiper modules that sometimes cannot operate under heavy load.
The worst Mercury Grand Marquis years, based on NHTSA reports and car complaints from previous owners, are 2003 and 2005.
Some of the most common problems reported by Mercury Grand Marquis owners include intake manifold failure, headlights not working properly, and valve dropped through the engine.
In summary, while the Mercury Grand Marquis is generally known for its reliability, there are some common issues that previous owners have reported, particularly related to the steering system and visibility. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-01-25
- VIN: 2MELM74WXRX
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY 1994 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS GS HOME FROM WORK ONE NIGHT AROUND 12:00 AM AND I EXPERIENCED TOTAL LIGHTING FAILURE. ALL OF THE SUDDEN EVERYTHING WAS PITCH BLACK NO LIGHTS WHAT SO EVER. EVERY LIGHT ON THE CAR WOULD GO OUT AND COME BACK ON SIMULTANEOUSLY,CAUSING ME SWERVE, ALMOST CRASHING HEAD ON WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I HAVE READ ONLINE OF OTHER GRAND MARQUIS' AND FORD CROWN VICTORIA'S DOING THE SAME THING.THIS WAS ONLY MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH THE LIGHTS. I HAVE OWNED THE CAR SINCE JAN 23,2013 AND THE LIGHTS CONTINUE TO DO THIS THEREFORE I CANNOT DRIVE IT AT NIGHT. THE CAR IS ALL ORIGINAL NO AFTERMARKET NOTHING BUT A CD PLAYER. LIGHTS WERE DOING THIS BEFORE I INSTALLED THE CD PLAYER. SO AFTER THIS EXPERIENCE I PULLED THE LIGHT SWITCH OFF ONLY TO FIND THAT THE FACTORY WIRING HARNESS THAT PLUGS INTO THE BACK OF THE LIGHT SWITCH HAD MELTED WHERE THE POSITIVE BATTERY WIRE SLOT IS.SO I REPLACED THE HARNESS WITH A BRAND NEW ONE,AND NOTHING.LIGHTS STILL GO OUT. A COUPLE WEEKS LATER I TOOK THE LIGHT SWITCH OFF AGAIN TO FIND THE NEW WIRING HARNESS I HAD JUST BOUGHT 2 WEEKS PRIOR MELTED JUST LIKE THE ONE FROM THE FACTORY, SAME WIRE SLOT. SO NOW I HAVE TO GO OUT AND BUY ANOTHER ONE. I HAVE ALSO REPLACED THE BATTERY AND THE AUTO LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE TOO THAT DIDNT FIX ANYTHING EITHER.IM GOING TO TRY A NEW HEADLIGHT SWITCH AND A NOTHER NEW HARNESS TOO. HOPEFULLY THAT WILL FIX IT.BUT UNTIL I GET THE MONEY TO FIX ONE OF FORD/MERCURY'S MOST ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS I WONT BE DRIVING IT AT NIGHT. BUT REALLY THIS CAR SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FORD SHOULD HAVE TO FIX THIS. GRAND MARQUIS AND CROWN VICS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEIR LIGHT SYSTEMS FAILING ALL THE WAY UP UNTIL THEY QUIT MAKING THEM IN 2011. WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS ON 1/23/2013 I WOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT MINE, THEY JUST ARE NOT SAFE. *TR
