Common 2015 Mercedes-benz Amg c63 problems
The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG (w204), launched in late 2007, is known for its power, handling, acceleration, and performance. However, the car isn't perfect, and several common problems have been reported by owners, particularly related to the M156 engine.
- M156 Engine Head Bolt Failure: Shortly after its launch, C63 owners started noticing clicking noises as soon as the engine was started. Oil levels rose, while power and performance decreased. This issue was traced back to the M156 V8 engine's head bolts, which were prone to failure. The problem was eventually addressed with a recall, but owners may still experience issues related to this defect.
- Camshafts and Lifters: A class action suit was filed in 2011 against Mercedes-Benz, alleging that the M156 engine's camshafts, lifters, and bearings wore out prematurely. This led to thousands of dollars in repair costs for customers. The suit claimed that soft metal used in the camshafts was improperly heat-treated, causing them to wear out prematurely. Mercedes-Benz issued a service bulletin to dealerships, but no corrective recall was ordered. The problem is still prevalent, with many C63 owners noticing clicking or tapping when they start their car, which subsides after about 5 to 10 minutes. This is due to oil "bleed down" off of the lifters, creating an un-lubricated "gap" between the lifter and the cam. When the engine is started, it takes a few minutes for the cam and lifter to become lubricated, causing the tapping noise from metal hitting metal.
- Unpleasant Interior Odors: This problem isn't limited to w204 C63s; however, it does appear to occur more often and with greater severity. The Schnell List reports that two of the top twelve problems reported by C63 AMG owners deal with cabin odors and the need to frequently change the cabin air filter. There seem to be two culprits here. One is the natural odor of interior leather and trim materials. Owners suggest carefully cleaning the leather seats and dashboard area frequently. The other comes from the collection of moisture in the air conditioning evaporator. Mold, mildew, and bacteria thrive in this warm, moist environment. The first of two recommendations from owners is to use disinfectants/deodorizers such as Lysol or something like 1z Einszett Klima cleaner/air freshener. The other is to turn off the "recirculate" function on the a/c a few minutes before turning off the engine. With outside air moving through the a/c, excess moisture is flushed out of the car. Owners also suggest regularly changing the cabin air filter.
- Rear Axle Differential Mounting Flange: Approximately 2,100 model-year 2015-16 Mercedes-AMG C63 sedans; model-year 2015-17 C63 S sedans; and model-year 2017 C63 S coupes and C63 cabriolets are affected by a recall due to the rear axle differential mounting flange, which may fracture from repeated aggressive launches. This can cause the rear differential to become misaligned, leading to the failure of the driveshaft and a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. The fix involves updating the vehicle’s stability system software and chassis control unit software for free.
- Carbon Build-up: The C63's engine, particularly the M156 V8 engine used in earlier models, is known to accumulate carbon deposits on the intake valves over time. This can lead to rough idling, reduced performance, and potential misfires. Regular maintenance, such as walnut blasting or carbon cleaning, can help mitigate this issue.
- Transmission Issues: Some customers have reported problems with the transmission, such as rough shifting or jerky movements. This could be caused by a faulty valve body or issues with the transmission control module. It may be necessary to reprogram or replace these components.
- Suspension Components: The C63's performance-oriented suspension can experience wear and tear, leading to issues like clunking noises or a harsh ride. Common culprits include worn-out bushings, control arms, or shock absorbers. Regular inspection and replacement of these components will help maintain the vehicle's ride quality.
- Electrical Gremlins: Like many modern vehicles, the C63 has an extensive electrical system, and some owners have reported problems with various electrical components. These issues can range from malfunctioning sensors to problems with the infotainment system or electrical connectors. Diagnosing and resolving electrical issues may require the expertise of one of our trained technicians.
- Brake Wear: The C63's high-performance braking system, while effective, can experience accelerated wear due to the vehicle's weight and performance capabilities. Some customers reported premature brake pad and rotor wear, requiring more frequent replacements compared to regular sedans. It is essential to regularly inspect and replace brakes when necessary.
Regular maintenance at Bavarian Rennsport, including following the manufacturer's recommended service intervals, can help prevent or address these issues. If you own a C63 and encounter any problems, consulting a qualified mechanic at Bavarian Rennsport for proper diagnosis and repair is advised.
Is the C63S AMG reliable?
Common Problems With the C63 AMG
From our experience, the C63 has proven to be a pretty bulletproof car but there is one significant issue that you should be aware of. This is the infamous headbolt issue that has plagued 2008 – 2011 model year C63s.
Are C63 expensive to run?
MPG and running costs
The estate records figures of 33.6mpg and 196g/km, while both bodystyles sit in the group J VED band. That's a hefty £485 in tax in the first year, £265 per annum thereafter. And as an AMG model sending considerable power through the rear wheels, remember to budget for tyres…
Why did Mercedes stop making C63 AMG?
More and more cars are downsizing due to stringent emissions regulations. The latest C63 is the most recent example, eschewing its brawny 4.0-liter V8 in favor of a small 2.0-liter four-cylinder. There had been some rumors about Affalterbach's plan to re-install a bigger engine, but that's not going to happen.
Is Mercedes C63 good?
Not only does it deliver thumping performance, its backed by a thunderous soundtrack that adds to the car's hugely engaging and entertaining character. And the C63 S backs this up with great handling. Sure, the ride is firm, but the Merc delivers great composure.
