The Lincoln MKS is a full-sized luxury sedan that was manufactured and marketed by the Lincoln subdivision of Ford from 2008 to 2016. First shown at the LA Auto Show in November 2007, the MKS began production for the 2009 model year at Ford's Chicago Assembly plant in May 2008 with sales beginning a month later. The MKS was the second Lincoln to adopt the "MK" nomenclature and the first model to wear it through its entire production run. With the discontinuation of the Lincoln Town Car in 2011, the MKS at 205.6-inches in length became the longest production sedan sold by an American automaker through 2016.

Sharing the Ford D3 platform with the fifth and sixth-generation Ford Taurus, the Lincoln MKS offered front-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive (a first in a full-size Lincoln). Shared with the Taurus SHO, the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 became the first turbocharged gasoline engine in a Lincoln.

The Lincoln MKS was discontinued after 2016 and replaced by the tenth generation Lincoln Continental.

Common Lincoln Mks problems

The Lincoln MKS is a luxury full-size sedan produced by the Lincoln Motor Company, a division of Ford. While the MKS is generally considered a reliable vehicle, there are some common problems that owners have reported across various model years.

Radio Concerns

One common issue reported by Lincoln MKS owners is related to the radio system. Some owners have reported experiencing difficulties with the radio, including issues with the sound quality, interference, and problems with the touchscreen interface. These issues can be frustrating for drivers, especially during long trips.

Grunting Noises from the Front Brakes

Another common issue reported by Lincoln MKS owners is a grunting noise coming from the front brakes. This issue is often caused by worn-out brake pads or rotors, which can lead to a grinding or grunting noise when the brakes are applied. In some cases, this issue may also be caused by a problem with the brake calipers or brake fluid. If left unaddressed, this issue can lead to more serious problems with the braking system, including reduced stopping power and increased stopping distances.

Fluid Leak from the Axle Area

Some Lincoln MKS owners have reported experiencing fluid leaks from the axle area. This issue is often caused by a problem with the CV joint or axle shaft, which can lead to a loss of power and reduced stability when driving. In some cases, this issue may also be caused by a problem with the differential or transmission.

Speed Changing Often in the A/C Fan

Another common issue reported by Lincoln MKS owners is related to the air conditioning system. Some owners have reported experiencing problems with the A/C fan, including issues with the speed changing frequently or unexpectedly. This issue can be caused by a problem with the A/C compressor, the blower motor, or the electrical system.

Transmission Problems

Some Lincoln MKS owners have reported experiencing transmission problems, particularly with the 2014 model year. These issues can include slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting. In some cases, these issues may be caused by a problem with the transmission control module or the torque converter. Transmission problems can be serious and may require significant repairs or replacement.

Ecoboost Engine Problems

The Ecoboost engine, which is available in some Lincoln MKS models, has also been reported to have some issues. Some owners have reported problems with the cam phasers, which can cause a loss of power and reduced fuel efficiency. In some cases, these issues may require significant repairs or replacement of the engine.

AC/Heat/Radio Module Issues

Some Lincoln MKS owners have reported experiencing issues with the AC/Heat/Radio module, which can cause problems with the climate control system and the radio. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and may require significant repairs or replacement of the module.

FCIM and APIM Module Issues

Some Lincoln MKS owners have reported experiencing issues with the FCIM (Front Control Interface Module) and the APIM (Audio-Video-Navigation-Control-Unit), which can cause problems with the infotainment system and the climate control system. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and may require significant repairs or replacement of the modules.

In conclusion, while the Lincoln MKS is generally considered a reliable vehicle, there are some common problems that owners have reported across various model years. These issues can include radio concerns, grunting noises from the front brakes, fluid leaks from the axle area, speed changing often in the A/C fan, transmission problems, Ecoboost engine problems, AC/Heat/Radio module issues, and FCIM and APIM module issues. If you are considering purchasing a Lincoln MKS, it is important to be aware of these potential issues and to have any problems addressed promptly by a qualified mechanic.

  • Summary: I was driving my 2013 limcoln mks and all of the sudden I could not turn the vehicle left or right. Then I had these 2 warnings: power assist fault and service advancetrac. This is very dangerous. It caused me to run my car into wall in front of me. It could have been a person. I called lincoln and was told there were no active recalls, yet no repairs ever on my steering. SO even though there was a recall for 2011-2013 limcoln mks power steering, it did not include my vin. I guess they just don't want to have to take responsibility. It boggles my mind how they can include or not include certain vins because my vehicle had the same thing happen as the recall for same year make and model, yet not my vin and it is allowed. Then when I get on the nhtsa website and see all of these same complaints, that it is perfectly ok because why? What is it, a sneaky way to continue with population control because covid didn't quite kill enough people for the government to reach their potential? This is ludicrous. It is ridiculous. It is unsafe. It is horrific that vehicles like mine are even allowed to drive on the road, with such a high risk on the road....seriously, why is my vin not included and what is the criteria when there is a recall for certain year make and model, why aren't every vehicle matching that year make and model included. To exclude them would mean that it had to be thoroughly investigated and investigating that thoroughly would mean to discover that indeed that vehicle should also be included. Maybe this recall is only for the elite and not for the meek. All created equal....not even close.

  • Summary: Vehicle's AC continuously goes from coldest temperature to high heat on its own and cannot be turned off. You can hit the Max AC button and numbers will read 60 and work it's way up to "HIGH" heat within just a few seconds. This happens at any given moment and will not stop until it wants to. Cruise control turns off while driving and collision warning sensor comes on. Once this happens, you cannot set cruise control anymore. This too is something that works and malfunctions on its own. When driving, I have experienced the loud collision warning sound and flashing red light on dash, causing me to panic while driving. Problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or service center, nor has it been inspected by manufacturer. Warning lamps and flashing red dash lights and alarms sound. This issue has been ongoing since May 2023. All issues described take place every single day that I drive my car.

  • Summary: Steering gear for power assistance failed while driving and the steering gear had to be replaced. Car became very difficult to steer. Luckily was not driving at speed and it happened in a parking lot. I live in a mountainous area with lots of curves. Could have easily resulted in an accident. Was able to drive back home slowly as it happened while in my sub-division. Had to have car towed to the nearest dealer for repairs as it was unsafe to drive at speed.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-22
  • VIN: 1LNHL9FT1BG
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: In 2015 a recall was done to repair the power steering failure issue. In October of 2021, while driving the vehicle down the highway, the power steering went out making the vehicle almost impossible to steer. Had the vehicle towed to the dealership where they verified the issue and pulled code U3000 for steering gear failure. With 68827 miles, I was charged for the entire repair with not one mention about the extension to the power steering recall. The parts and labor that were charged were those mentioned in the recall. Fast forward to November 2022, had the vehicle towed to the same dealership for the same issue. Lights on the dash were present, and concern verified that the power steering was completely inoperative. No communication with the unit told me that the power steering control needed to be replaced. Again there was no mention or advocating involving the power steering recall that involved this exact issue. This time was told that they installed a part that was used in the previous repair so again I had to pay the entire cost. Currently, there are no issues with the vehicle but I have been looking to sell it because I have not driven it much due to the cost of these repairs. It was during my research to sell that I came across all the recall information on my vehicle and do not understand why all of these costs were not covered and why the dealership did nothing to advocate for me.

Latest negative Lincoln Mks car reviews

  1. Lavon Ryan 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2009

Despite the initial excitement of owning my dream car, my experience with it has been far from satisfactory. With 20000 miles on the clock, I have encountered numerous issues that have left me feeling regretful about my purchase. Despite being provided with rental cars during repairs, I found that even the cheaper, more basic models were more responsive and faster than my own car. Despite my concerns, the service department at Gengras Lincoln in East Hartford CT assured me that the car was functioning within the manufacturer's specifications, even though the transmission hesitates to switch gears. However, I am confident in my assessment of the car's performance and will continue to pursue a resolution. Investing a significant amount of money in a brand new car should result in a more positive experience than what I have encountered so far.

  2. Trent Stokes 2025-03-15

    Vehicle year: 2012

What an excellent ride! The steering is the best I've experienced and the interior is absolutely beautiful. As someone who has owned 25 cars in 55 years, I can confidently say that this is the best overall vehicle I have ever owned. With 135k miles on the clock, I've only had to make one small repair which cost me $350. The only issue I've had was when the water pump leaked at 150,000 miles. Unfortunately, the water pump is located inside the motor which made the repair quite difficult and expensive. However, I was able to get the OEM parts I wanted. It's worth noting that this design flaw affects both the 3.7 and 3.5 motor. Despite the repair bill being over $1500, I still believe this car is worth every penny.

  3. Isom Ratke 2025-03-12

    Vehicle year: 2010

I really liked this car and took good care of it, racking up a lot of miles. As someone who usually gets 250,000 miles out of a car, I expect reasonable maintenance costs to achieve this goal. Unfortunately, the water pump on this model is known to fail and can be difficult to diagnose due to coolant weeping into the crankcase. Even worse, most shops won't replace the water pump because it's located under the timing chain cover and requires the engine to be almost completely removed, resulting in a dealership cost of over $2200! This is unacceptable. If you own this car, I recommend unloading it before you need this repair. Mine made it to 164,000 miles.

  4. Armand Green 2025-03-08

    Vehicle year: 2009

This car was absolutely stunning, but unfortunately, I had a lot of issues with it. In just the first year, I had to take it to the shop over 10 times and the problems only got worse. The moon roof peeled the headliner back from the roof the first week I owned it, and the driver's seat broke. Despite replacing 3 of the 4 locking mechanisms, the problem persisted. The AC was also not consistently cold, and the lumbar blew out in the passenger side (and even in the driver's side just 50 miles out of warranty). Additionally, the garage door opener never worked and the door numbers only worked hit and miss. This continued until the time I traded it. Unfortunately, Lincoln refused to work with me and would not declare it a lemon.

I purchased a Lincoln car in the summer of 2012, which was loaded and had only 17,000 miles on it. I had high hopes that it would be a reliable car that I could use for several years. However, I ended up selling it just 7 months later. In my experience, I found that the car's acceleration was poor and jerky. Additionally, the side assist warning system would beep even when there was no one near me for miles. After just two months, part of the driver's seat fell apart and a piece of the grill fell out. The gas mileage was also not great, and the car would skid in the rain. Based on my experience, I have decided not to purchase a Lincoln or Ford car again.

Overall, you have a great car! It's a good alternative if you're shopping for a small SUV. You got yours for about $16k with 55k miles, and for the money, you can't get anything else with all the features it has: heated, cooled and massaging seats, panoramic roof, nav, v6, awd, blind spot, and collision warning. The touch-sensitive buttons can be a little finicky, but other than that, everything works great. It's a very comfortable ride and great to drive!

This car is truly amazing! With 355 HP and every option available for its year, it's a powerhouse on the road. The ride and handling are incredibly smooth, but when you need some power, it hugs the road with ease. I've driven a SHO before, but what I love most about the MKS is that it has all the power of the SHO with the quiet and serene feel of a Lincoln. Even with 116k miles, it still feels brand new. I would definitely buy it again!

I purchased my 2009 MKS as a 3-year-old Certified Preowned Vehicle and was immediately drawn to its impressive technology, power, and handling. While the ride can be a bit bumpy on rough roads compared to my previous Town Cars, I have grown to love this car over the years. Although I experienced some issues early on, I was fortunate to have an extended warranty to cover the inconvenience. Despite having to make several trips to the shop, I am happy to report that my car is now in excellent working condition. With nearly 200,000 miles on the odometer, my MKS still performs like a champ and looks practically new. It has become a dear friend to me.

The only weird thing I had to replace was the servo in the vents that changed the air from floor to defrost, at 115,000 miles. Since then, I have driven over 150,000 miles and have had no major issues, except for that one minor issue. I have no other complaints about its reliability. It has started with no issues in temperatures ranging from -30f to 105f. One thing I would have liked is if the processor in the touch screen was much faster. It takes a good full 1-2 seconds for it to respond to anything you do. Just having a faster processor in that to make it an instant response would make the car feel modern even today. But it felt aged brand new due to the terrible slowness from the start. Come on Ford. The power is perfect, I don't need more, and I don't want less. The handling is incredible, especially if you put Michelin Pilot 4 (all season) tires on it. The braking is great, I did front pads last at 105,000, and at 146,000 I put new pads on the rear brakes. I've done one wheel bearing around every 50,000 miles now, it's never really certain how long a bearing will last but they're part of normal maintenance. However, I must say that black seats are VERY hard to clean. With the perforations for the AC seats, any dust particles that are white will get caught in the little holes and are basically impossible to get out to make the seats look clean again.

What a lovely ride! I absolutely adore my MKS with Ecoboot, it's truly an amazing car. Even in the winter, it handled like a dream, easily tackling uphill roads with 4 to 7 inches of snow - and all with 20 inch wheels and tires! The only other vehicle that managed to keep up was my neighbor's Tahoe. I was thoroughly impressed. The car has plenty of room and the leather they use is just divine. It feels incredibly soft to the touch, yet has held up remarkably well (20,000 miles).
