Common Kia Rio problems
The Kia Rio is a popular subcompact car, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from Kia Rio owners:
- Bumpy Ride: Early models of the Kia Rio, particularly those with suspension issues, may have a very bumpy ride. This problem is often caused by worn-out suspension systems, which can be replaced with new ones.
- Illuminated ABS Light: If the ABS warning light is lit up on the dashboard, it could be due to a broken sensor on the back wheel that's attached to the bearing. This issue is common in the Kia Rio and can be fixed by replacing the sensor.
- Excessive Vibration: If the car is vibrating excessively, it could be due to a failed rear shock rubber mounting. This problem can cause the steering to become weaker and can lead to quicker tire wear.
- Engine Misfire: The Kia Rio is known for going through spark plugs quickly, and if the engine is misfiring or idling roughly, it could be due to worn-out spark plugs. It's also worth checking the spark plug wiring for damage.
- Fuel Leak: A cracked inlet nipple on the fuel distribution rack can cause fuel to leak from the car, which can lead to a fire hazard. This problem was the subject of a recall and can be fixed by replacing the distribution rail and fuel supply pipe.
- Noisy Power Steering: If the power steering is noisy, it could be due to a problem with the power steering pump or the rack and pinion. This issue can be fixed by replacing the faulty component.
- Disengaged Child Lock: The child locks on the rear doors may not work due to a recall issue where the release lever cable is too short. This problem can be fixed by replacing the cable with a longer one.
- Stereo Speakers Not Working: If the stereo is working but there is no sound coming from the speakers, it could be due to a software glitch. A hard reset of the car's electrical system can often fix this problem.
- Excess Noise When AC is On: If there is excess noise when the air conditioning is on, it could be due to a problem with the compressor or the fan. This issue can be fixed by replacing the faulty component.
- Engine Seizure: The 2004 Kia Rio has had reports of engine seizure, which can be a serious problem. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including low oil levels, a faulty engine sensor, or a damaged timing chain.
- Engine Failure: The 2013 Kia Rio has had reports of engine failure, which can be a costly problem to fix. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out engine components or a faulty engine sensor.
- Engine Knock: The 2014 Kia Rio has had reports of engine knock, which can be a serious problem. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including low oil levels, a faulty engine sensor, or a damaged timing chain.
- Fuel Consumption: Some models of the Kia Rio, particularly the 2013 model, have had complaints about excessive fuel consumption. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty fuel injector or a damaged engine component.
- Transmission Issues: Some models of the Kia Rio, particularly the 2013 and 2014 models, have had complaints about transmission issues. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels or a faulty transmission component.
- Electrical Issues: Some models of the Kia Rio, particularly the 2019 model, have had complaints about electrical issues. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty alternator or a damaged battery.
It's important to note that not all Kia Rio models will experience these problems, and many owners have reported having few or no issues with their vehicles. However, if you are considering purchasing a Kia Rio, it's worth being aware of these common problems and doing your research to ensure that you are getting a reliable vehicle.
Is a Kia Rio a reliable car?
Kia is the third most reliable car brand, according to J.D. Power and RepairPal. Kia offers a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. The Rio is the most reliable Kia model and has the brand's lowest average repair costs, according to RepairPal.
What are the main problems with Kia Rio?
It requires fewer annual repairs compared to other hatchbacks. It's a great investment, losing only 45% of its value after five years. Some frequently reported issues the Kia Rio face include a faulty infotainment system, transmission problems, and loud engine noise.
Is Kia Rio cheap to fix?
A KIA Rio 5 will cost about $8,432 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This is more than the industry average for popular hatchback models by $1,668.
Why was the Kia Rio discontinued?
Kia discontinuing Rio subcompact sedan
It shared a fate similar to its Hyundai counterpart, the Accent subcompact sedan, which did not return for the 2023 model year. Kia, like other mass market brands, plans to use crossovers rather than cars as an entry-level gateway for mostly young, first-time buyers.

Kia Rio 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-25
- VIN: KNADM4A33E6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Driving to work I exited US-26 in Hillsboro, Oregon at the 185th exit. The exit is an uphill ramp with a traffic signal at the top of the hill. The traffic signal at the end of the ramp was green. I was following a Tesla Model Y and I saw the brake lights activate. I applied my brakes causing my car to slow down and then I had to proceed through a yellow light because I did not think I could stop safely without ending in the intersection. At the next traffic signal, I rolled down my window and yelled to the other driver to not apply their brakes when they are proceeding uphill through a green light. The other driver told me it is "regenerative braking." Unnecessary braking causes disruptions in the flow of traffic. It does not make sense that brake lights would activate if the driver is not applying the brakes.

Kia Rio 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31
- Date Complaint: 2024-07-29
- VIN: KNADM4A36D6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle has just over 110,000 miles and the vehicle burns oil like crazy. Piston rings typically last 150,000 miles. Started running low on old 5,000 miles ago. I’ve looked online and found more incidences like mine and are happening around the same mileage. This can cause major engine damage if left untreated. I feel it’s worth an investigation to save people from future issues like this. Vehicles should last well over 100,000 miles without major engine repair like piston rings. Unfortunately I have no documentation to prove this I have no money to take it to the shop but I’ve changed the oil about 4 times in the past 3 months. It sounds like maintenance needs to be carried out but I can assure you that something this major should not be happening at 110,000 miles. Thank you for your time

- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-17
- Date Complaint: 2024-07-12
- VIN: KNADN4A38G6
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Complete engine lockup during operation at speed which caused steering and braking to be greatly hampered. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The engine failed on a 4-lane highway in traffic which could have easily caused a high-speed accident since the car extremely decelerated and lost power steering and braking in order to get out of traffic. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes confirmed by an independent service center which told me it was either a cylinder rod or a lower engine bearing failure. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, the manufacture KIA has a recall on other models in this year range but not the RIO. The other models have a similar engine failure caused by a faulty cylinder rod bearing. The RIO has never been added to this recall list, but it should be because it looks like the engine issues are also on this model in the same time frame. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, they only came on when the engine failed. Then every warning light appeared.

Vehicle year: 2021
I completely agree that hatchbacks are becoming less popular in America, but they are still going strong in Europe. As someone who lives in L.A., I can tell you that the hatchback version of this car is the way to go. The sedan just doesn't compare. While the power and comfort are average for the segment, the legroom is fantastic, even for someone as tall as me (I'm 6 foot 4). Plus, the simple a/c and temp controls make it easy to stay comfortable. But the real hidden gem is the touchscreen and WIRELESS Apple Car Play/Android Auto, which comes standard with the car. The hatchback is also incredibly compact, making it easy to park anywhere in L.A. And if you need to transport a lot of gear, the seats fold down for added convenience. Plus, with a 5 year 60k mile bumper to bumper warranty and 100k drivetrain, you can rest easy knowing you're covered for years to come. All in all, I think this car is the best value out there, especially considering it's one of the few new cars available for under $20k. I absolutely love it!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Rio! It sounds like you've had a great experience with it so far. Even though the Eco feature was a bit of an adjustment, it's great to hear that you're finding it useful. It's also fantastic to hear that the car has plenty of pep and that it's spacious enough for you, even with your height. The folding side mirrors are a really nice touch, too. Overall, it sounds like Kia did an excellent job with this car. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I'm so excited to share that I got an amazing deal on my new Rio! I only paid $15,250 and it's been such a great purchase. The car only had 3,000 miles on it and I absolutely love it. I've found that using NON-ethanol gasoline really helps the engine perform better and I've even picked up a couple more MPG. With 33 MPG combined driving, it's been a great choice for me. As someone who's 6'3

Vehicle year: 2016
I purchased my Kia Rio LX Sedan brand new in 2013 for around $15,000. I opted for the automatic transmission and added the 'Power Package' (Power Windows and Power Door Locks with keyless remote). I have been extremely satisfied with the car! I drive 100 miles per day, mostly on the Interstate, and in three years, I have put over 65,000 miles on the car. I have not experienced any issues, repairs, or recalls. I only visit the dealer for oil changes every 5,000 miles. Despite being a sub-compact car, the Rio is surprisingly comfortable on the Interstate. I typically cruise at around 85 MPH, and the tire noise, engine noise, and wind noise are all very low. There are no rattles or squeaks inside the cabin either. Unlike other sub-compact cars, the Rio is not only small but also well-made (with sound insulation, thick glass, etc.). My average gas mileage is about 37 MPG, and I am a sporty driver. Although city driving requires more gas, you can still get 40 MPG on the Highway if you stick to the 75 MPH speed limit and don't drive with a heavy right foot. I never use the 'eco' button as it makes the car sluggish. Compared to other small cars, the Rio is nicely equipped. It has a relatively large wheelbase, which means it is pretty stable on the Interstate. If you push it over 100 MPH, stability suffers a bit, but by that time, you are also going way over the speed limit (unless you live in Germany). The Rio also has excellent brakes, which is not mentioned in other reviews. It does not have cheap drum brakes in the rear like most competitors. Instead, it has discs all around, which provide awesome stopping power. I did not pay extra for the EX version, but instead, I got the accessories I wanted on Ebay and installed them myself (i.e. fog lights, chrome grille, mudguards). I even put a trailer hitch on it so that I can use a bike carrier. The Rio does not come with a spare tire, only a compressor and tire repair kit/foam. However, I bought the spare tire kit as well. One of the features that the LX did not have was cruise control. However, the computer in the car already has the cruise control software and the throttle is 'fly by wire'. So all you need to do is buy an EX-steering wheel and install it in your LX, and that gives you the cruise control buttons! I plan to keep the Rio for many more years. It's nice to know that the engine is using a timing chain, so you don't have to worry about a belt that needs to be replaced every 60,000 miles. The transmission is a 'sealed unit' and according to the manual, you do not have to replace the transmission fluid...ever. However, my dealer recommends changing the fluid at 90,000 miles. I will probably do that. The automatic transmission is actually pretty smooth and quick. I use it in 'manual/sport mode' all the time, so I can determine my own shift points. The engine is impressively powerful for just a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder. It does not make it a sports car, but the Rio does not weigh much and if you are willing to rev the engine a bit, it is pretty quick! The last thing I want to say is that the styling of the Rio is best in class. Taste is personal, but many sub-compact cars are just ugly. The proportions just don't look 'right' on cars like the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, etc. The Rio, on the other hand, is really a good-looking car! Overall, I am very impressed with this little car. It is great value for money! Oh, and it has a 10-year 100,000-mile warranty (but you will probably never need it).

Owned: I bought this car new from the dealer in 2007 and I still own and run it today. I have lived in various states with this car, including CO, WV, GA, MN, and VA, and have taken it off-road, in cities, and on highways. However, there are some cons to this car. The rear tire camber means that I must rotate the tires every 5k miles and no less, as the inner edges of the tires are often destroyed before the main tread of the tire. I have gone through 5 sets of tires in 102,000 miles. The car also misfires on occasion, but it has never fully stranded me. Despite this, the car always starts if I keep cranking it. The front wheel bearing started thudding down the road at 95k, and all belts were replaced at 75k. The spark plugs were also replaced at 75k (with Boche platinum), but the occasional misfires continued. The car gets good gas mileage on the highway, but city and winding mountain roads dramatically dent the mpg figures below EPA estimates. The radio volume knob stopped functioning around 80k, and the battery was replaced at 45k (I haven't replaced the autocraft gold since the first replacement). The rear window seals rotted at 45k, but I used silicone to patch them. The EVAP solenoid also failed around 45k. However, there are also some pros to this car. It has never stranded me despite rural mountain roads, snow and ice, high elevation, and extreme temperatures. The mpg on the highway is around 30. In summary, if you want a nice car, you'll have to pay for it. You could get a cheaper car than this, but this is about the bottom of the barrel within the car market. If you don't have a good income, a Kia is a nice trade-off between cost and quality. Unlike a used car, my first 40k of ownership was flawless (except for the tires at 20k and the occasional misfire tripping the check engine light).

This car has unfortunately experienced a number of issues, including multiple check engine lights, brake and airbag sensor problems, wheel bearing failures, and various belt replacements. Additionally, there have been issues with the timing belt, exhaust pipe gasket, and clutch throwout bearing. Despite these challenges, the car has been well-maintained and has only accumulated 99,000 miles.

I bought my Rio with 60,000 miles on it and have since put 68,000 more miles on it. It has been very reliable, and the only maintenance I have done is replace the rear wheel bearings. While it may not be the most powerful car, the manual transmission helps. I do wish it was a coupe or roadster since the backseat is pointless, and a manual without a tachometer is just silly. However, it is very economical and outperforms all those useless SUVs in every way, especially in handling! Overall, I love my car, even though it's not perfect.

We experienced two major breakdowns within 8000 miles, requiring a new transmission and a new front axle. Despite my wife's gentle driving, these issues have caused me to lose faith in KIA as a reliable brand. This experience has led me to regret my purchase and I will not be buying another KIA in the future.

I really enjoy my little Kia, although this year model has had some issues. Unfortunately, some of them have been quite serious. Some cars seem to last forever, while others are not so lucky. This model has been known to have problems with bad grounds, blown head gaskets, and faulty sensors, which can be expensive to repair if you can even find the parts. Despite these issues, I would still recommend this car if it were more reliable. One thing I really appreciate about it is the handling. It's a lot of fun to drive around in S-turns and roundabouts. The interior is also quite comfortable. The only downside is that the RPM can be a bit high on the freeway, but that's to be expected with such a small motor.
