The Kia Niro (Korean: 기아 니로) is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) manufactured by Kia since 2016. It is an electrification-focused vehicle, offering three versions: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric variants.
First generation (DE; 2016)
The first-generation Niro was introduced in 2016. Based on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia opted to use dual-clutch transmission instead of the more traditional continuously variable transmission found in most other hybrids to offer a more engaging driving experience.
The size is between the Stonic and Sportage, and very close to the XCeed. In Europe, the Niro was launched in a choice of seven colours and either 16- or 18-inch wheels. It was the first Kia model to feature Android Auto, available from its launch, while Apple CarPlay was made available towards the end of 2016. Seven airbags were included as standard, along with other safety features including autonomous braking, smart cruise control and lane departure warning to name a few. Noise reduction was a key development focus, with Kia achieving a quieter cabin by use of increased front structure insulation and the use of acoustic windshield glass.
Full production started in May 2016 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, South Korea, with European sales from the third quarter of 2016.
A plug-in version was launched in the United Kingdom in the end of 2017, and in the United States in the beginning of 2018, with an electric version launched in 2018. Towards the end of 2018 and start of 2019, sales of the Niro PHEV ranked highly in Denmark and Sweden in a list of top plug-in car sales.
The Niro received a facelift in 2019 which included changes to the front and rear bumpers, as well as new headlights and color choices. Unlike the prototypes, no production version was ever offered with four wheel drive.

- Summary: Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2022 Niro EV vehicles. The high voltage battery safety plug may overheat and melt, which can cause a loss of drive power or fire.
- Consequence: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash, and a fire increases the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to charge their vehicle in a garage or any other covered structure until the recall repair is completed. Dealers will replace the safety plug, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 19, 2024. Kia's number for this recall is SC314.

I am extremely pleased with my recent purchase of the Kia Niro! The dealership offered an excellent deal, and I was able to trade in my leased 2019 VW Jetta for over $10,000 less with a Federal $7500 rebate and $3300 dealer incentives. Although VW did not allow the Kia dealer to offer the $14,200 payoff, Jim Sipala accepted the extra bucks and I received a check from VW for $2700 two weeks later. It was a great deal! Swapping my $23k VW for a $46k EV only cost me $65 more a month, and I am now saving $75 a month on gas based on 1k miles monthly. I am a big fan of EVs! The Kia Niro has exceeded my expectations, providing just about everything the manufacturer claims it does. The acceleration is smooth and instant, making it fun to drive. The handling is quite acceptable and it maneuvers great. Even at highway speeds of 70+, it feels safe and is quiet. I have even driven at 90 mph and it feels the same as 70 mph. The premium model has everything in the way of safety features and luxury as well. The back-up sound bings are especially helpful in parking lots, and I have already avoided a parking lot collision with the auto brake feature. Lastly, the mileage range is right on spec at 4 miles per kw, and I have even managed up to 4.5 in the summer, giving me a range of 288 miles. Now in the winter, I get about 275 miles. I mostly drive around town, but even then, the regeneration braking is the reason for the great mileage, and I can control how much applies. The only negative I have found is the display screen, which has a lot of control features to deal with. However, I am getting used to it. I put a Juice charging station in my attached garage, which cost $700 plus $550 for installation of a 220 line. After the PA $750 and Peco $50 rebates, the net cost was only $450. It was a no-brainer, and overnight charging is as simple as a plug-in. My wife is even getting a Tesla long range in January, and with the adapter plug, we will be able to charge both EVs. We loved this car, but unfortunately it had some issues with the gears. Despite being towed and supposedly fixed, the same issue occurred a week later in a parking lot. After almost 3 months of attempted repairs, the issue remained unresolved. We are currently in the process of seeking a refund from Kia, which has taken almost a month to receive a decision. The dealer's proposed solution of offering us trade-in value towards another car was not satisfactory. We are disappointed with the situation, but remain confident that we will reach a resolution.
