2003 Chrysler Voyager problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Voyager (and the long-wheelbase Chrysler Grand Voyager) is a minivan produced by the Chrysler division of Stellantis. In the current lineup, it is positioned as the lower-end Chrysler minivan, having replaced the Dodge Grand Caravan in 2020, below the Chrysler Pacifica.

The Chrysler Voyager was introduced in Europe in 1988, and was a rebadged version of the Dodge Caravan in the United States. It originally evolved with the Caravan, the Plymouth Voyager, and the Chrysler Town & Country. In the United States, the Chrysler Voyager nameplate replaced the short-wheelbase (SWB) version of the Plymouth Voyager following the folding of the Plymouth division by DaimlerChrysler AG in 2001, and was discontinued in 2003. The nameplate was revived for the 2021 model year following the discontinuation of the Dodge Grand Caravan after the 2020 model year, and is rebadged as the Chrysler Grand Caravan in Canada.

In Europe, the Chrysler Voyager was rebadged as the Lancia Voyager from the 2011 until 2016 model years. The Voyager was sold with different engines, including diesel engines, and was also available with manual transmission and a foot-operated emergency brake. Although now produced solely in Ontario, Canada, the Grand Voyagers were still available with diesel engines as standard. These diesel engines are based on a modern double overhead cam common rail design from VM Motori of Italy. The last European Chrysler Grand Voyagers are very similar to the 2008 and later Chrysler Town & Country cars, and were sold only in the long-wheelbase version (as in North America). Following the fifth generation, the Grand Voyager nameplate was discontinued in all markets.

Together with its nameplate variants, the Chrysler minivans have ranked as the 13th bestselling automotive nameplate worldwide, with over 12 million sold.

Common 2003 Chrysler Voyager problems

The Chrysler Voyager, also known as the Grand Voyager in some markets, is known for its spacious interior and ample cargo space. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most frequently mentioned issues is the failure of the electronically operated latch on the electric sliding door. This problem is easy to diagnose; if the door works using the manual controls but not the automatic switch, then the latch has likely failed. There have also been reported issues with the motor not working.

Another common problem with the Chrysler Voyager is the failure of the suspension bushes. These are reportedly one of the first parts to fail in the car. To check the condition of the suspension bushes, drive over some rough roads during a test drive or give the car a quick push on the bonnet and check that the car returns to its position in a single bounce.

The shock absorbers on the Chrysler Voyager are also known to have problems. To check the condition of the shock absorbers, look under the wheel arch at the springs. If there are any signs of moisture on the parts, this is a good indicator that the shocks are leaking and not up to standard.

The automatic gearbox in diesel models of the Chrysler Voyager is also known to have issues. If the automatic gearbox baulks and fails to engage properly, this is a sign of transmission problems, which can be one of the most costly known faults to repair in this Chrysler minivan.

There have been reports of a known problem with the rear seatbelt fixing in early models of the Chrysler Voyager, which caused a widespread recall. If the Voyager you are looking at purchasing was manufactured in the early 2000s, you'll want to see evidence that the work was completed.

In addition to these specific issues, the 2003 Chrysler Voyager has been reported to have problems with interior fittings falling off and breaking, which can be frustrating for owners.

Overall, while the Chrysler Voyager is a well-engineered car with many positive qualities, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider having the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-08-01
  • VIN: 1C4GJ45343B
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: RECENTLY I NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS "SPONGY"- I INSPECTED THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND FOUND A STEEL PORTION OF LEFT REAR BRAKE LINE ASSEMBLY RUSTED AND LEAKING. THE LINE FELL APART COMPLETELY DURING REMOVAL. THE LINE ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. I DO HAVE THE OLD LINE ASSEMBLY FOR INSPECTION. THIS VEHICLE HAS BRAKES THAT WEAR OUT MORE FREQUENTLY THAN ANY OTHER VEHICLE I'VE EVER OWNED. I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKES TWICE AND THE REAR BRAKES AND WHEEL CYLINDERS IN LESS THAN 60,000 MILES. WHEN I TRY TO OBTAIN REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE FRONT BRAKE SYSTEM I INVARIABLY RECEIVE THE WRONG PARTS- I HAVE TO GET PARTS LISTED FOR A 4 CYL. VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH MINE IS A V-6. I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL NAME-BRAND PARTS MANUFACTURERS AND ALL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. I BELIEVE MY VEHICLE WAS ASSEMBLED AT THE FACTORY WITH THE WRONG FRONT BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH IS UNDERRATED AND RESULTS IN PREMATURE WEAR. I HAVE ALSO, ON A PREVIOUS OCCASION, HAD AN ISSUE WITH AN "ABS" LIGHT AND "BRAKE" LIGHT COMING ON- EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. AT THAT TIME THERE WERE NO LEAKS OR OTHER FAULTS TO CAUSE THE WARNING LIGHTS. I WAS FORCED TO PAY THE DEALER TO "RE-FLASH" THE COMPUTER WHICH WAS IMPROPERLY PROGRAMMED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER HAD A TSB FOR THIS CONDITION AND I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A CHARGE TO CORRECT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD SEVERAL BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEMS WHICH SHOULD NOT BE OCCURRING ON A VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 60,000 MILES! *TR

  • Summary: ON THE EVENING OF NOV 19, 2005, THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2003 CHRYSLER VOYAGER MINIVAN FLICKERED ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING HOME. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN ON THE EVENING OF NOV 20, 2005. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO MY MECHANIC ON NOV 21, 2005, AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM NOR COULD THEY IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. I DROVE THE CAR FOR ABOUT A MONTH WITHOUT A REPEAT INCIDENT, BUT LAST WEEK (AROUND FOURTH WEEK IN DEC) THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I PLAN TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER NEXT WEEK. I AM SUBMITTING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE I HAVE READ ONLINE THAT THERE IS AN ONGOING GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATION INTO THIS PROBLEM WITH 2001 AND 2002 MODEL YEAR CHRYSLER MINIVANS, AND I WANT TO GO ON RECORD AS EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM WITH A 2003 MODEL YEAR MINIVAN. I MAY BE SIGNIFICANT THAT I PURCHASED MY 2003 MINIVAN IN NOV, 2002, VERY EARLY IN THE 2003 MODEL YEAR. *NM

  • VIN: 1C4GJ45343B
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,VISIBILITY,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: HOW A VEHICLE THAT ONLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 22,900 MILES ON IT AND WAS BOUGHT NEW CAN BE TAKEN TO THE SHOP OVER 16 TIMES ALREADY WITH MAJOR ISSUES. AT 1,734 MILES THE RADIATOR HOSE/OUTLETS/INJECTOR FUEL HAD TO BE REPLACED, AT 7,749 MILES AND SEVERAL TRIPS REPLACED PADS, DISC BRAKES, ROTORS (BOTH SIDES) AFTER FINDING BREAK LINE OFF FROM FACTORY, AT 12,275 MILES REPLACED PRIME PUMP/GASKET/SPACER, AT 12,913 MILES REPLACED BOTH SWAY BARS AND BUSHINGS/GLASS & REGULATOR ON PASSENGER FRONT DOOR, AT 17,163 MILES REPLACED POWER STEERING HOSE, AT 17,812 MILES HAD TO REPLACE ROTORS & BRAKES BOTH SIDES (3RD SET ON VEHICLE), AT 20,662 REPLACED COWL CLIP/SEALED UP FRONT WINDSHIELD/REPLACED SWAY BAR(3RD SET ON VEHICLE), AT 20,900 REPLACED HOSE/VAPOR CANISTER. AT 22,422 REPLACED SOP/COWL PANEL. THE ABOVE ISSUES HAVE ALL BEEN DONE DURING THE DATES 04-07-03 TO 07-20-05. OUR CONCERN IS IF ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS HAVE COME IN ON THE SAME ISSUE OR IS IT POSSIBLE THIS IS JUST A BAD VEHICLE. IT SEEMS TO BE IN THE SHOP EVERY 2 TO 3 MONTHS. ALSO, SINCE THE BRAKES/ROTORS/SWAY BAR CONTINUE TO BE REPLACED OUR CONCERN IT THAT SOMETIME IT MAY FAIL AND RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH. SEEMS THE PIECES THAT ARE BEING REPLACED HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES, MAKING US QUESTION IF SOMETHING ON THE VEHICLE IS OFF IN THE BUILDING OF THIS VEHICLE TO CAUSE SUCH WEAR AND TEAR ON MAIN ITEMS THAT YOU USE TO STEER AND MOVE THE VEHICLE WITH. THE OLD PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE, WE DID TRY TO ASK THE DEALER FOR THE OLD BRAKES BUT WAS ADVISED THEY COULD NOT GIVE AS THEY NEED TO HAVE A EVIDENCE TO GET THE 1ST SET PAID FOR AND THE 2ND SET WAS SET UP FOR US TO PAY A PORTION OF THE BILL. *NM
