The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common 2010 Gmc Savana problems

The GMC Savana 2010, a popular heavy-duty van, has been reported to have several common engine and transmission problems.

One of the most frequently reported engine problems is the transmission getting stuck in the third gear, particularly with 4L60E and 4L65E types of transmission. This issue may be caused by a malfunction in the instrument cluster, with DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) set at P0753, P0740, P1860, and P0785. The most likely culprit is an open circuit 1020 between the transmission and fuse panel or a blown fuse. If the fuse has no battery voltage, it may require replacing the ignition switch. This problem can also be due to excessive bore wear that holds the regulator valves and TCC isolator, resulting in extreme line pressure, which can only be resolved by replacing the 4L60E valve body with isolator valves and revised TCC regulator.

Another common issue with the 4L60E and 4L65E transmissions is a harsh 1-2 shift, which can indicate excessive bore wear that holds the regulator valves and TCC isolator, leading to extreme line pressure. The only solution is to replace the 4L60E valve body with isolator valves and revised TCC regulator.

When there is no movement when shifting to the third gear or Drive position, it indicates that the GMC Savana 2500 has problems. This issue can be resolved by replacing the forward sprag assembly.

The 4L60E and 4L65E transmissions also have a common problem with the first and third gears functioning correctly, but there are problems with the second, third, and reverse gears. The solution is to replace the heat-treated 4L60E/4L65 sun gear, which is a failure of the reaction sun gear.

In addition to engine problems, the GMC Savana 3500 has also been reported to have transmission problems, including harsh or erratic shifting and slipping, which can cause the engine to over-rev.

To avoid transmission problems, it is essential to check the transmission fluid level regularly and top it off with DEXRON®-VI ATF Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid if it is low. If the vehicle is experiencing transmission issues, it is recommended to consult a certified technician to accurately diagnose the problems.

Negative 2010 Gmc Savana car reviews

  1. Ole Macejkovic 2024-06-16

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned using your van to pull your fishing boat to the ocean. That sounds like a lot of fun! I was thinking that it might be helpful to have side mirrors that extend out for better visibility when backing up in tight spaces. I've seen some really nice ones on Ford pickups that might work well for your van. Some of them even retract and fold against the truck when not in use. I know you love your van, and I think this could be a great addition to make your fishing trips even more enjoyable. It's great that you have holders for all your fishing gear, too. Just lock up the van and you're ready for your next adventure!

  2. Kayleigh McKenzie 2024-05-23

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Exployer conversion. While the interior looks great, I did notice that the ride quality is only fair. Additionally, at highway speeds, there is quite a bit of wind noise which can make it difficult to hold a conversation.

  3. Dejuan Jones 2024-05-04

Although I have always been a GM guy, this particular van has been a disappointment. The windshield cracked on the first day off the lot due to small stones, which is indicative of poor quality glass. Additionally, the AC failed within 6 months of purchase. The fuel efficiency is also subpar, with only 10mpg in the city or on the highway, and only 12mpg on the highway on one occasion. When towing my trailer, I was only able to achieve 6mpg. Overall, I would not consider purchasing this van again.

  4. Will Rice 2024-01-08

Great van! It's amazing how much power and fuel mileage it provides for such a large vehicle. I'm really looking forward to purchasing the new GM Diesel van. We use it to tow the US Bobsled to shows and take it to a lot of Nascar Races. We're very active in racing, selling our products to several teams and sponsoring others. It's not uncommon to see Nascar drivers catching a ride in our van, which can seat up to 15 people. All in all, we're extremely satisfied with it.

  5. Levi Rippin 2024-01-08

When my diesel van was new, it had some engine problems, transmission issues, alternator malfunctions, sliding door troubles, and a few other problems. However, they were eventually fixed. Now, it is pretty reliable, except for the alternator belt that has flown off 3 times. Despite the issues I've had, I absolutely love my van! It tows great and I have no problems passing any other truck type vehicles on any mountain passes. My husband agrees that it outperforms his 1997 4x4 dually Chevy diesel truck, except for the lack of 4-wheel drive. I can honestly say that this vehicle has enhanced my life because of its towing abilities and the spacious interior it provides. Although the interior may be cheap, I have learned to live with it. I would definitely buy this vehicle again, especially with 4-wheel drive.

Positive 2010 Gmc Savana car reviews

  1. Terrance Mitchell 2024-11-08

Very good in snow and provides smooth acceleration. The 4 speed auto is a little whiny. If you drive up a lot of hills, get the 6.0 v8 because it is a tad stronger off the line. My family loves this van. I'm planning my vacation in Catskills and all wheel drive will be helpful

  2. Jermain Grady 2024-10-14

I've been working since I was young, and GMC is the only work truck for me. If I had used an extended van, I wouldn't have been able to park it in the warm garage away from the birds we feed.

  3. Johann Champlin 2024-10-05

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've owned this from when it was new and I really like everything about it.

  4. Herminio Boehm 2024-08-29

I really enjoy my 1500 van! It's so much smoother than the bouncy 2500. It has the vortec 350 with 430k miles, but the original motor runs like a champ with no issues passing inspection every year. The transmission has been swapped out once, but it's still driving every day and getting 17 mpg. With the rear A/C, it gets colder than a Cadillac!

  5. Herman Nitzsche 2024-07-24

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a bit about our van. We bought it way back in 2004 and it's been through a lot with us. On our very first trip, it got hit by Hurricane Charley! Despite all that, it's still going strong and gets around 14 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway. The 5.3 liter engine can go from 0 to 60 in about 8 seconds, and even though it's only RWD, it handles rain, snow, and ice like a champ. Plus, it's just really fun to drive! All in all, we've had such a great experience with this van that we're definitely considering buying another one in the future.
