The fourth generation of the C/K series is a range of trucks that was manufactured by General Motors. Marketed by the Chevrolet and GMC brands from the 1988 to the 2002 model years, this is the final generation of the C/K model line. In a branding change, GMC adopted the GMC Sierra nameplate for all its full-size pickup trucks, leaving the C/K nomenclature exclusive to Chevrolet.

Internally codenamed the GMT400 platform, GM did not give the model line a word moniker (e.g., "Rounded-Line series" for its predecessor). After its production, the model line would informally become known by the public as the "OBS" (Old Body Style), in reference to its GMT800 successor. In starting a different tradition, the model line overlapped production with both its predecessor and successor; the model line again shared body commonality with GM medium-duty commercial trucks.

Over nearly a 14-year production run, the fourth-generation C/K was assembled by GM in multiple facilities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. After the 2000 model year, the fourth-generation C/K was discontinued and was replaced by the GMT800 platform (introduced for 1999); the C3500HD heavy-duty chassis cab model remained in production through 2002. In line with the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet subsequently adopted a singular Chevrolet Silverado nameplate for its full-size truck line (which remains in use).

Common 2006 Gmc G1500 problems

The 2006 GMC G1500, also known as the Sierra 1500, is a popular pickup truck with a reputation for reliability and durability. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems and complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500:

  1. Rusted Brake Lines: This is the most common complaint from owners of the 2006 Sierra 1500, with many reporting issues around 100,000 miles. The steel brake lines can corrode, especially in areas with a lot of salt, and replacement can cost around $1,000.
  2. Slipping Transmissions: Transmission slipping out of gear is another common problem, usually occurring around 75,000 miles. This is often a sign of a problem with the third and fourth gears in the transmission, which can cost around $500 to replace.
  3. Fuel Gauge Failures: This issue affects many GM vehicles and is caused by a faulty fuel sending unit in the tank. This can result in incorrect fuel gauge readings and cost around $850 to replace.
  4. Driveline Vibration: Some owners have reported issues with driveline vibration, which can be caused by a variety of factors including driveshaft or axle problems, CV joint issues, or electronic stability control malfunctions.
  5. Wheel Bearing Noise: Front wheel bearings can become noisy and may require replacement, especially if they have play or are making a helicopter-like sound.
  6. Electrical Failures: Some owners have reported electrical failures, including issues with the turn signal switch and traction control system.
  7. CV Joint Failure: The CV joint can fail, causing a loud noise and requiring replacement.

It's important to note that these issues are not universal to all 2006 GMC Sierra 1500s, and many owners have reported no major problems with their vehicles. However, these are some of the most commonly reported issues based on owner complaints and feedback. Proper maintenance and regular inspections can help prevent or address these issues before they become major problems.
