The fourth generation of the C/K series is a range of trucks that was manufactured by General Motors. Marketed by the Chevrolet and GMC brands from the 1988 to the 2002 model years, this is the final generation of the C/K model line. In a branding change, GMC adopted the GMC Sierra nameplate for all its full-size pickup trucks, leaving the C/K nomenclature exclusive to Chevrolet.

Internally codenamed the GMT400 platform, GM did not give the model line a word moniker (e.g., "Rounded-Line series" for its predecessor). After its production, the model line would informally become known by the public as the "OBS" (Old Body Style), in reference to its GMT800 successor. In starting a different tradition, the model line overlapped production with both its predecessor and successor; the model line again shared body commonality with GM medium-duty commercial trucks.

Over nearly a 14-year production run, the fourth-generation C/K was assembled by GM in multiple facilities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. After the 2000 model year, the fourth-generation C/K was discontinued and was replaced by the GMT800 platform (introduced for 1999); the C3500HD heavy-duty chassis cab model remained in production through 2002. In line with the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet subsequently adopted a singular Chevrolet Silverado nameplate for its full-size truck line (which remains in use).

Common Gmc G1500 problems

The GMC G1500, also known as the GMC Sierra 1500, has been reported to have several common problems according to car owners. These issues include transmission and engine problems, four-wheel drive problems, front airbag deployment, and brake assist issues.

Transmission and engine problems are a significant concern for GMC G1500 owners. Many have reported experiencing faulty shifting, stalling, or sputtering, especially when quickly pressing the accelerator. These issues are often left unresolved and can be attributed to computer control systems, hard transmission shifts, or a weaker engine at low mileage. Regular maintenance checks, such as inspecting spark plugs and using higher-quality gasoline, can help combat some of these problems.

Four-wheel drive problems have been reported in various GMC Sierra models, although they are not directly linked to the 2017 model. The most common complaint is the failure of the selector switch on 4-wheel drive models, which can lead to service alarms and the need for replacement. However, this issue is less prevalent in the 2017 model.

Front airbag deployment is another problem area for the GMC G1500. In some cases, airbags may not deploy during a crash, and seat belt pretensioners may fail to activate. This issue has been recalled and affects several GMC models, including the 2017 Sierra. Front airbag deployment problems are typically covered under recall and do not incur additional costs if the vehicle meets the criteria.

Brake assist issues are also a concern for GMC G1500 owners. There have been reports of unintentional braking, which can cause vehicles to pull to the left or right, increasing the risk of motor vehicle crashes. Additionally, low vacuum pump levels can limit brake assist, requiring more pressure to come to a full stop and potentially causing rear-end crashes.

In summary, the GMC G1500, or Sierra 1500, has been reported to have various common problems, including transmission and engine issues, four-wheel drive problems, front airbag deployment failures, and brake assist malfunctions. Regular maintenance and monitoring can help address some of these concerns, but it is essential to be aware of these issues when considering purchasing a GMC G1500.
