1999 Ford Ranger electric problems
The Ford Ranger EV (Electric Vehicle) is a battery electric compact pickup truck that was produced by the Ford Motor Company and was the automaker's first all-electric production vehicle. It was produced starting in the 1998 model year through 2002 and is no longer in production. It is built upon a light truck chassis used in the Ford Explorer. Most vehicles were sold with nickel–metal hydride batteries (NiMH). A few vehicles with lead-acid batteries were sold, but most units were leased for fleet use.
As of 2022, an active owner's community continues to maintain and upgrade these trucks.
History
Cost
The above the line cost of this vehicle (before manufacturer discounts and other public agency subsidies) was US$52,720 (equivalent to $100,063 in 2023). Ford Motor Credit supported a generous 3-year lease program that would, along with AQMD (Air Quality Management District) funding and Federal Tax Credits, allow for a RangerEV 3-year lease payment as low as US$155 (equivalent to $294.19 in 2023) per month.
An example is the Lawrence Livermore/Berkeley Labs, in eco-friendly Northern California, signed on for 20 units from Ford Motor Credit, with a total lease cost to the Labs of $0 over the 3-year lease term. Thanks to overwhelming financial support from government-funded Clean Cities programs and AQMD Grants, when applied towards an APP (All Payments Paid) version of the RangerEV commercial lease the resulting lease became Paid In Full.
The Ranger EV qualified for a California Clean Air Vehicle decal, enabling access to carpool lanes for single-occupant vehicles through 2018.

Common 1999 Ford Ranger electric problems
The 1999 Ford Ranger has several common electrical problems, as reported by owners of this vehicle. These issues can affect various components of the electrical system, including the battery, alternator, voltage regulator, ignition, and wiring.
One of the most common electrical problems with the 1999 Ford Ranger is related to the battery and alternator. Some owners have reported that their battery voltage is reading low, even after replacing the battery. This can be caused by a faulty voltage regulator, which is part of the alternator. If the voltage regulator is not working properly, it can cause the battery to discharge, leading to a low voltage reading. In some cases, the alternator itself may be the problem, and a new alternator may need to be installed.
Another common electrical problem with the 1999 Ford Ranger is related to the ignition system. Some owners have reported that their truck will not start, and that the dashboard lights go out when the key is turned to the "start" position. This can be caused by a faulty ignition switch or module, which can prevent the electrical system from receiving power. In some cases, cleaning the battery ground connections and checking for a coded key can help to solve this problem.
The 1999 Ford Ranger also has several common electrical problems related to the wiring system. Some owners have reported that their dome light does not go out, even when the doors are closed. This can be caused by a faulty door latch or wiring, and can be fixed by spraying WD-40 in the door latches or replacing the latches. Other owners have reported that their windshield wipers come on by themselves, which can be caused by a faulty wiper motor or wiring. In some cases, the wiper switch may need to be replaced.
In addition to these common electrical problems, the 1999 Ford Ranger has several other issues that can affect the electrical system. For example, some owners have reported that their fuel tank fill tube rusts and leaks, which can cause fuel to leak out of the tank. This can be a serious safety hazard, and should be addressed as soon as possible. Other owners have reported that their transmission comes out of park on its own, which can be caused by a faulty transmission control module or wiring. This can also be a serious safety hazard, and should be addressed immediately.
In summary, the 1999 Ford Ranger has several common electrical problems that can affect various components of the electrical system. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty batteries, alternators, voltage regulators, ignition switches, modules, wiring, and other components. If you are experiencing electrical problems with your 1999 Ford Ranger, it is important to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to diagnose and fix the problem.
