Ford Freestyle problems

The Ford Freestyle is a crossover utility vehicle that was sold by Ford from 2005 to 2009. Largely marketed as the successor to the Ford Taurus station wagon, the Freestyle was the CUV counterpart of the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego four-door sedans. Sharing the Ford D3 platform with the Five Hundred and Montego, the Freestyle was produced with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations and six- or seven-passenger seating.
Following the return of the Ford Taurus for the 2008 model year, the Freestyle underwent a mid-cycle revision and was renamed the Ford Taurus X, marketed in the United States and Canada, as well as South Korea and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. Following the 2009 model year, the Taurus X was withdrawn. From the 2009 model year, the larger Ford Flex has served as the three-row Ford CUV/wagon.
From 2005 to 2009, the Freestyle/Taurus X was assembled at Chicago Assembly (Chicago, Illinois); the final vehicle was produced on February 27, 2009.

How reliable is a Ford Freestyle?
As mentioned previously, the Ford Freestyle is an incredibly reliable vehicle that's built to withstand collisions. Despite this, it's not invincible, and its parts are just as susceptible to damage and degradation as any other vehicle's.
What is the life expectancy of a Ford Freestyle?
With careful driving and good care you may get to 350,000 miles, but be prepared for that transmission crapping out unexpectedly. If you are thinking that by trading it in you are cutting your losses, I think at 200K miles you are too late. IF the car drives fine, just drive it until something major brakes.

- Summary: Driving my 2005 Ford Freestyle today when I suddenly heard a loud explosion or crash sound overhead. At first I thought something had fallen from the sky and crashed into the top of our vehicle. I immediately slowed down and pulled the car off the side of the road. My husband was a passenger in the vehicle. He carefully got out of the vehicle and looked on top of and around the vehicle. That is when we discovered that the glass in the sunroof had literally exploded and blown out of the vehicle. The track was still in place and operating normally. The glass was completely blown out of the vehicle. Because the Ford Freestyle was only in production for 3 years (I believe), there probably are not many still in use. Thus, there are probably not many Ford Freestyle owners having or reporting this problem. Besides being scared, the potential for being hit by the exploding glass and suffering substantial injuries to our heads, eyes, face, shoulders, bodies, could have been tremendous, if not deadly. I reported the incident to Ford Motor Company. The vehicle has not been inspected yet by manufacturer, police, insurance, or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the sunroof glass failure.

It was serviced by the facility that does my servicing so I believe that qualifies as a dealer. I transport four children back and forth to school and am very concerned about the vehicle “ falling apart!” I understand that the Taurus and the Freestar have the same subframe and those have been recalled. I would think that the Freestyle should be recalled also. There were no warning lights or messages related to this problem. I have now reported this and am asking you to take action to repair this problem. Thank you!

We recently purchased a Freestyle and it's a fantastic car! It has plenty of room, a smooth ride, great gas mileage, and comes well-equipped at a reasonable price. I had never heard of the Freestyle before visiting the Ford dealer, but I'm glad we did. We were considering the Pacifica, but ultimately chose the Freestyle due to its better gas mileage and reduced blind spot.

This SUV is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and spacious vehicle. Despite having 110K miles, it still handles very well and I have had no issues with the brakes. While there was a problem with the throttle body, Ford was able to repair it. I have owned this car for ten years and am very happy with it. The only minor issue is with the ventilation system, which struggles to keep passengers in the rear seating area cool during the summer heat. Overall, this is an excellent SUV that I highly recommend.

The room in this SUV is great and it's very comfortable, especially on long trips. However, there is a bad blind spot on the driver's side rear. The power is plentiful, but the transmission can be deceiving due to the CVT. The back seat has plenty of room, but the third row is only suitable for toddlers or small children. When the third row is laid flat, there is loads of room. Unfortunately, the transmission had to be replaced, which is a common issue in the AWD models. Despite this, Ford does not acknowledge the problem or offer a solution. I traded the car with 102,000 miles due to issues with the replacement transmission.

I've only had this rig for 5 months, but I've really enjoyed owning it so far. It currently has 100,000 miles on it. As a service tech at the dealership where it was sold new, I've personally done a lot of the service work on it. The CVT is original and, thankfully, has had no problems so far. Looking back, I can only recall 3 CVT's with problems at our dealership, and I worked on one of them. Compared to other vehicles, I think the failure rate is probably average. This summer, I'm planning to tow a 14' fiberglass boat, so we'll see how that goes. I even removed the rear center console so our 4-year-old can easily get through to the third row. Overall, I'm really happy with this rig and excited for our upcoming adventures!

We purchased our 2007 Ford Freestyle used in 2009 with only 17000 miles. Unfortunately, we immediately experienced an issue with the traction control light coming on the dashboard. Despite taking it to the dealership, they were unable to find a problem and advised us to ignore it. Now, with 66,000 miles, we are experiencing severe transmission problems. We have taken it to two local dealerships, but neither were able to diagnose or repair the issue as they do not work on CVT transmissions. After researching online, we discovered that this is a common problem with the Freestyle and that there is a lack of Ford Trained Transmission specialists. As a result, we do not recommend purchasing another vehicle with a CVT transmission. Thank you for your understanding.

I fell in love with this car until I realized that it had some issues that were difficult to fix. Unfortunately, car shops consider this car a bit of a nightmare. There are several recalls on this car, which means that you'll have your hands full trying to replace everything that will be necessary. The transmission randomly went out on me without any signs, and unfortunately, a simple transmission fix isn't possible. It has a CVT Transmission, and it can be challenging to find someone to work on it. However, there are some options available if you're willing to do some research. While this car may not be the best fit for everyone, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

I got my freestyle about 2 1/2 years ago. The first 8 months went well, but then we started seeing some problems. First, it was some kind of ignition sensor. We replaced that 3 times. Then, the fuel rail pressure sensor went out. That was a $100 dealer-only part. One week later, the fuel pump went out. We replaced that for $400. Now, one month later, we are having the same problem with the fuel rail sensor and the car is jerking like the transmission may be having some problems. After seeing this site, it seems to be a common issue with this vehicle. I tried to trade it in today, but I still owe too much on it. Basically, I regret buying a Ford and will never own one again. Lesson learned!

This car has been a major disappointment. The brakes and tires needed replacement within 30,000 miles, followed by a costly throttle body malfunction. Despite paying it off early, the car has continued to fall apart with power steering and wheel bearing issues, as well as a needed water pump replacement. The transmission is also on the verge of failure. While there have been no recalls yet, the dealer has acknowledged the unusual amount of problems for a new car. It is not recommended to purchase this car unless you have a significant amount of money to spare.

The car's frequent repairs have been a financial burden, as many of its components are made of plastic and prone to breaking.
