2008 Ferrari 612 problems

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (Type F137) (Italian pronunciation: ) is an executive 2+2 coupé grand tourer manufactured by Italian automobile manufacturer Ferrari between 2004 and 2010. It was designed to replace the smaller 456; its larger size makes it a true 4 seater with adequate space in the rear seats for adults.

The design, especially the large side scallops and the headlights, pays homage to the 375 MM built in 1954 that director Roberto Rossellini had commissioned for his wife, Ingrid Bergman.

Chassis

The 612 is Ferrari's second all-aluminium vehicle, the first being the 360 Modena. Its space frame, manufactured in collaboration with Alcoa, is made from extrusions and castings of the material, and the aluminium body is then welded on. The chassis of the 612 formed the basis of the 599 GTB flagship grand tourer.

Common 2008 Ferrari 612 problems

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, introduced in 2004, is a grand tourer that offers a blend of performance, luxury, and practicality. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.

  • Semi-Automatic Gearbox Clutch Sensor Malfunction: In 2008, a recall was issued to rectify a problem that could cause the semi-automatic gearbox clutch sensor to malfunction during normal operation.
  • Front Rims and Tyres: The front rims can buckle easily due to the low-profile tyres, and the rubber requires replacing every 10,000 miles or so.
  • Bodywork and Interior: The all-aluminium chassis and body mean that rust is not an issue. However, it's essential to check for any accident damage or signs of wear and tear, especially in the dashboard switches, which can become sticky to the touch when left to stand for long periods.
  • Engine and Transmission: The manual gearbox is strong but very rare, and the six-speed F1A automated manual gearbox was recalled in 2008 for a faulty sensor. Later 'boxes are reliable but benefit from the latest available software updates.
  • Suspension and Steering: Usual checks for alignment and any noises are required. Otherwise, the 612 is very reliable in these areas.
  • Carbon Ceramic Brakes: The optional carbon ceramic brakes are very long-lasting but can be expensive to replace. A refurbishing service is available from German specialist Sicom at around £15,000 per set including pads.
  • F1 Shifter Mechanism Glitches: Some owners have encountered annoying glitches with the F1 shifter mechanism, which have proven to be relatively inexpensive to repair, generally falling in the $1,000 range.
  • Tires and Wheels: The 612 has a healthy appetite for tires, with rubber needing to be replaced every 10,000 miles or so. The 19- or 20-inch aluminum front wheels are only modestly protected from impacts by their low-profile tires and can be dented or bent by pot holes.
  • Sticky Switches and Leather Shrinkage: Ferrari has yet to resolve the dreaded, long-running sticky switches problem, especially on cars that are stored without being used for long periods. The leather that covers the dashboard can shrink if the car is regularly left in the sun, exposing the underlying foam and metal, which can cost $4,000-5,000 to replace.

In summary, potential buyers of the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti should be aware of these common problems and consider them when evaluating a used car. Regular maintenance, especially for the engine and transmission, is crucial to ensure the longevity and reliability of this grand tourer.
