2007 Dodge Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.
In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.
First generation (1995–2006, T1N)
Europe
The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.
The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2007 Dodge Sprinter 2500 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2007 Dodge Sprinter 2500, several common problems have been identified:
- DEF Heater Failure: Another common problem involves the Diesel Emission Fluid (DEF) heater failing, leading to the DEF freezing and triggering the engine warning light. This issue is more noticeable in colder months and can affect Sprinters from 2010 onwards. If the DEF heater element burns out, it can result in a "check engine" warning. Replacing the DEF heater can cost around $1,500.
- Turbo Resonator "Oil Leak" Air Leak: Owners have experienced issues with the Turbo Resonator, which is prone to problematic seals and O-Ring, leading to air leaks that are sometimes mistaken for oil leaks. This air leak originates from the turbo output and can cause performance issues in the Sprinter.
- Rumble Sound / Torque Converter (TC): A common problem known as the "rumble strip sound" is associated with the Torque Converter (TC) making noises similar to driving over rumble strips. This issue can be caused by incorrect transmission fluid or wear and tear on the lock-up clutch of the TC. Repairing this problem involves rebuilding the TC with heavy-duty parts, making it more durable than the original, with an estimated cost of $1200 to $1350.
- Injector Issue or "Black Death": Owners have reported problems related to injector issues, commonly referred to as "black death." This problem occurs when the copper seal ring between the injector and cylinder head fails, allowing combustion gases to leak and leading to the accumulation of black tar-like material over fuel injectors. Addressing this issue involves replacing the copper seal ring to prevent further leakage and engine performance issues.
These common problems with the 2007 Dodge Sprinter 2500 highlight various technical issues that owners have faced, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to prevent significant breakdowns and costly repairs.

2007 Dodge Sprinter 2500 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2007 Dodge Sprinter 2500.
- Manufacturer: Daimler Vans USA, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2007-2009 Freightliner and Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled into the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side frontal air bag, free of charge. The recall began on September 29, 2017. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. Note: This recall fully supersedes recall 15V-354 and partially supersedes recalls 16V-379 and 17V-025.
