Dodge Sprinter 2500 problems

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.

In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.

First generation (1995–2006, T1N)

Europe

The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.

The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common Dodge Sprinter 2500 problems

The Dodge Sprinter 2500 is known for its robustness and reliability, but like any vehicle, it can have certain issues. Here are some common problems with the Dodge Sprinter 2500, based on complaints from owners:

  1. Transmission Problems: The Dodge Sprinter 2500 can experience various transmission issues, such as shifter getting stuck in park, automatic transmission shifting concerns, and transmission fluid leak. These problems can lead to poor performance, difficulty in shifting gears, or even complete transmission failure.
  2. Electrical Issues: Owners have reported issues with the Electronic Control Module (ECM) and ABS codes, which can cause false codes or drastic mode, reducing engine power. These issues can be caused by faulty sensors or wiring harness wear.
  3. Glow Plug Failures: Glow plugs on T1N Sprinters can seize into the cylinder head, making replacement a major repair. The ECM monitors the glow plugs, and can issue a fault for glow plug problems. However, glow plugs should not be replaced just upon the ECM fault codes, as these are often false.
  4. Harmonic Balancer Issues: A very serious possible problem in 2001-2005 models, but hard to identify correctly, with many possible symptoms: rough-running engine, lots of engine vibration which varies at different RPMs, damaged sensors, leaking crankshaft seals, etc.
  5. Drive Shafts and Universals: Ensure that a mechanic checks the drive shafts and universal joints. Unlike many domestic vans, problems here can be fairly expensive.
  6. Turbo Resonator: On heavily-loaded 2004-2006 Sprinter RV conversions, the plastic turbo resonators often failed, at least until the Q5 resonator (see sticker on resonator for model version).... A new plastic OEM resonator is around $50.00, a Riordan aluminum replacement is about $140.00. You can install this yourself.
  7. Heater Fan: If the heater fan only works on high speed, the heater resistor has probably failed. The heater resistor is about $40, and you can easily replace this yourself.
  8. Fuel Line Clips: Check the fuel line clips to make sure they are still holding the fuel lines in place. If the fuel lines are unclipped, they can wear through and begin leaking, and worn fuel lines can cause starting problems.
  9. No Cold Air from the A/C: If the air conditioning won’t blow cold air, there might be a hole in the condenser. The condenser on T1N Sprinters is close to the ground, so this is a common issue with older T1N Sprinter vans.
  10. Remote Door Locks: Make certain they are all in working order. You may just have to clean the door contact units.

These are some of the most common problems with the Dodge Sprinter 2500, but it's important to note that many of these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and timely repairs. Regular inspections and servicing can help prevent these problems from occurring or becoming more serious.

  • Date Complaint: 2018-07-14
  • VIN: WD5PD644145
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),ENGINE
  • Summary: I DID THE T21 RECALL UPDATE TO THE PCM AND HAVE HAD CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, THEN IT DIED AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE GREATEST SPRINTER MECHANICS IN MY AREA. THIS WAS AFTER THE DEALERSHIP CLEARED CODES THE FIRST TIME MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOWING FROM INSURANCE MADE ME PAY THE DIFFERENCE IN MILEAGE FROM THE DEALERSHIP. HAD T21 RECALL FINISHED JUNE 22, 2018, AND AGAIN TODAY AFTER PICKING MY VAN UP FROM MY TRUSTED MECHANICS THURSDAY( WHO ONLY WORK ON SPRINTERS AND COULD NOT FIND THE ISSUE) AND AGAIN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. I HAVE HAD NO ISSUES WITH MY VAN UNTIL THIS STUPID UPDATE.. I WILL NEVER TRUST YOUR RECALLS EVER AGAIN. FROM WHAT I AM READING, YOU GUYS DON'T CARE OF THE COST AND BURDEN IT PUTS ON US WHO HAVE COMPLICATIONS AFTER THIS PCM UPDATE. SO, WHEN ME AND MY QUADRIPLEGIC SON GET STUCK SOMEWHERE, ARE YOU GOING TO HELP US? PATHETIC COMPANY AND STUPID RECALL. NOTHING LIKE DRIVING THREE TIMES SINCE THE UPDATE TO TAKE MY TIME OUT OF MY DAY, STRESS ABOUT NOT HAVING AN ACCESSIBLE VEHICLE FOR OUR USE, AND EVERYBODY SHRUGGING THEIR SHOULDERS. YES, SIMPLY ACCELERATING FROM A STOP LIGHT MUST BE REALLY HARD ON MY ENGINE WITH ONLY 124K MILES.! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TO HELP THOSE OF US WITH MANUFACTURING VINS UP TO JULY OF 2004? YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY THINKING ALL ENCOMPASSING PCM UPDATES ARE NEEDED BUT HOW ABOUT YOU THINK ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE IN MODELS FROM WITHIN THE YEAR. OR IS THAT TOO MUCH THINKING FROM YOUR OWN BRAIN AND THE COMPUTER DIDN'T TELL YOU WHAT TO DO?
Dodge Sprinter 2500 2004
  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-15
  • Date Complaint: 2018-05-15
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: RECEIVED T-21 RECALL NOTICE FOR 2004 SPRINTER 2500. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP WE WERE SENT TO BY DODGE (FIAT). DEALERSHIP DID THE REQUIRED SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO THE ECU - RESULT WAS THAT THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS TRASHED. THEY REPLACED 2 MODULES AND THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. PCM IS NOT SHUTTING DOWN THE MODULES AND RELAYS AND ALL CIRCUITS STAY OPEN AFTER THE ENGINE IS SHUT OFF. THIS IS CAUSING THE BATTERY TO BE COMPLETELY DRAINED IN A SHORT TIME PERIOD. OUR VAN IS USELESS TO US - CAN'T DRIVE IT ANYWHERE AND DODGE (WE FILED A COMPLAINT OVER 4 WEEKS AGO) AND THE DEALERSHIP REFUSE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP WANTED $2,600 TO REPLACE THE PCM AND THEY WERE NOT CERTAIN THAT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY ALSO NEVER CLEARED THE CODES AS REQUIRED BY THE RECALL (FOR THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR ISSUE). WE HAVE INVESTED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TIME (HAD TO TAKE THE VAN BACK TO DEALERSHIP THREE TIMES ALREADY) AND DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.
