Chrysler Pt cruiser problems

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is a compact car that was built by the American company Chrysler from 2001 until 2010. Introduced as a five-door hatchback wagon, a two-door convertible variant was also made from 2005 until 2008.
Originally planned as a Plymouth model, the PT Cruiser was ultimately marketed as a Chrysler when Plymouth was discontinued. Intended to invoke 1930s aesthetics, the exterior of the PT Cruiser was designed by Bryan Nesbitt. The model received an intermediate facelift for the 2006 model year. Interior packaging was noted for its high roof, high h-point seating, and flexible cargo and passenger configurations enabled by a multi-level rear cargo shelf and rear seats a user could fold, tumble, or remove.
The PT Cruiser was produced in Mexico and Austria at the Toluca Car Assembly and Eurostar Automobilwerk factories. By the end of production in July 2010, worldwide production had reached 1.35 million.
In its nameplate, PT stands for "Personal Transport" or "Personal Transportation". PT was the PT Cruiser's product code for the Mexican-made units.

Common Chrysler Pt cruiser problems
The Chrysler PT Cruiser has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
One of the most common engine problems is engine misfiring, which is especially prevalent in some of the older models. This issue is due to a design fault with the spark plugs, which can cause poor idling and engine misfires. Chrysler addressed this issue by issuing new spark plugs, and fixing the problem is mainly a matter of sourcing and fitting them.
Another engine problem is the engine not engaging, which is often caused by a worn or damaged flywheel. This issue can lead to rapid wear and burnout of the starter motor, so it is crucial to replace the flywheel and starter motor quickly if this problem is encountered.
Starting problems are also common with the Chrysler PT Cruiser, particularly when the engine is cold. This issue is most likely caused by a faulty camshaft position sensor, which monitors the camshaft position and speed and feeds that information back to the Engine Control Unit. If the ECU doesn't have access to this information, it will switch off fuel and spark delivery, resulting in engine failure.
The clutch slave cylinder can also fail on the PT Cruiser, leading to a weak or sagging clutch pedal. This issue can result in an inability to change gears, and it is a relatively simple fix that requires replacing the clutch slave cylinder.
Interior rattling is another common problem, particularly around the passenger side wheel arch area. This issue is due to a poorly fitted dashboard, and it can be fixed by removing the glove box and packing around the area behind the dashboard.
Other common problems with the Chrysler PT Cruiser include faulty ignition, faulty engine, and poor build quality.

- Summary: I purchased the 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser on 1/10/2024. I learned that the Chrysler Dealership does not make keys for the vehicle when locked out, nor does it Service the vehicle. They will "address" a Recall Notice and will do an oil change and will do an inspection only. Chrysler Dealership told me to "Come back tomorrow" when a Recall Notice was issued and they said it was not Safety Related, however a Power Steering Pressure Hose was found to be leaking/exploding oil and this IS a safety related issue. I was rear ended 1/23/24 with 2 dogs in the car. I did not purchase Uninsured Motorists Insurance because I thought under CA State Law that I was legally compliant with insurance I had purchased. I thought between two cars in a potential accident, one had to be able to cover fault for any reason if not both equally. I was told by my Insurance to go after the other Man's Insurance, even if he was not the driver and this did not seem right. The other Man's Insurance Policy had lapsed and I was told there is no coverage for being rear ended. The man said I hit him and said something about "not seeing" the light or turn signal which I demonstrated for functionality. Vehicle has been given different assessments and inspections from 1/10 when purchased to present. I paid $500 at one AAA ASE Facility and $15,000 out of Retirment plus hotel for 3 weeks for the vehicle "dying" and the problem cannot be identified. Car is doing weird things mechanically and no one can locate the problem. There is unaddressed Body Damage where the Rear Left Light (plastic and housing) broke. The vehicle has to have body repair and a new light ordered at a cost greater than what is available through an Auto Dismantler. Chrysler does not make parts for this vehicle. There was rust and corrosion in coolant and metal found in Transmission. I paid full price for a used Transmission. I need someone to review traffic footage to determine when the window went down and dog went out and why

- Date Complaint: 2022-06-17
- VIN: 3a4fy48b07t
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I'm driving along, cruise set to 65. Ac on. Radio on. No sounds or weird feels from the car. Every light on the dash comes on. They went off after two seconds, with the seatbelt light being last to shut off. Then the car hits 113k miles about ten miles later and just... shuts off. All gauges drop to zero. Ac shuts off. Radio still playing. Full tank of gas. Headlights still on, brakes worked, power steering worked, and emergency flashers worked. I managed to get out of traffic and pull over without causing an accident. I turn the radio off and turn the key off for a few minutes. It cranked right back up and ran a little rough for a moment before smoothing out. I drove home without incident, but kept the radio and cruise off. And stayed under 65. Thankfully, traffic was light. The car has not been fixed as of this posting, nor has it been seen by anyone due to the weekend. Unsure of when I can get it fixed due to finances, but if this happens in heavy traffic or on one of many roads with no shoulder, lives will be at risk.

As proud owners of two 2008 PT Cruisers, my husband and I can attest to their dependability and comfort. The Cool Vanilla and Blue colors add a touch of personality to our retired lifestyle. The ease of getting in and out, coupled with the elevated seating position, make it a superior choice to my previous Chrysler LeBaron. Although we were disappointed to hear of the discontinuation of the PT Cruiser, we are confident in the longevity of our current vehicles.

I absolutely love this car! When I bought it, I knew it was the perfect choice for me and I haven't regretted it for a second. It's amazing how such a small car can be so spacious - it's definitely the biggest little car I've ever owned (and I've been driving since 1961!). It's perfect for city driving as it can fit into even the smallest parking spots, and it handles beautifully on both parkways and highways. Although it's only a 4-cylinder, it performs surprisingly well even at high speeds. Plus, it's a champ in the snow and ice - it powers through all kinds of winter weather with ease!

I absolutely adore my P.T.! From its cute and unique look to its impressive performance and fuel economy, there's so much to love. As someone who has previously owned luxurious European cars with big engines, I can confidently say that the P.T. provides the same level of pleasure at a much more affordable price. While the engine may not be as powerful as my previous cars, it still has enough speed to get me out of tricky situations. Plus, the fact that I can enjoy luxury and economy in one cute little wagon is a huge bonus! As a female professional, the P.T. is the perfect car to make me look good.

Your 2001 5-speed PT Cruiser sounds like a great find! It's impressive that you only paid $2,500 for it, especially considering its low mileage and excellent condition. I'm glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it so far, and that it has been a reliable car for you. It's also great to hear that it has plenty of leg and head room, even for taller passengers. While it may not be the best car for snowy conditions, it sounds like it's a dream to parallel park and has plenty of space on the inside. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

You may not love the turning radius or gas mileage, but you'll be impressed by how much you can haul! The car started reliably for 9 years, although the battery did fail a couple of times. It's surprising that a car with such a small engine could have such poor gas mileage. It's a shame that Chrysler didn't address the obvious flaws instead of discontinuing the line. All in all, it's a great car!

In the past four years, I have experienced multiple front end and suspension issues with my car, including wheel bearing problems, three sets of lower control arms, and a persistent rattle in the front. Unfortunately, I have recently encountered additional suspension problems, a broken motor mount, and a blown head gasket. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to my car and its performance, and I am confident that with the right repairs and maintenance, it will continue to serve me well.

This car has been nothing but problematic since I purchased it. Despite my efforts to maintain it, I have experienced a number of issues, including poor fuel efficiency, stalling when the air conditioner is on, difficulty shifting on hills, and frequent check engine light warnings. I have invested a significant amount of money in repairs, including replacing the brakes, rotors, and spark plugs twice, and have been told that it needs yet another tune-up. Despite having a powertrain warranty, I have not received any coverage for repairs to the engine or transmission. Based on my experience, I have decided that I will not be purchasing a Chrysler vehicle again.

I really enjoyed driving this car, except for when I had to drive it in the snow. However, I started experiencing some issues with it such as it randomly acting like it ran out of gas, honking without any reason, and turning on my hazards, which I couldn't turn off. After some research, I found out that Chrysler was sued over this year of car's TIPM, which controls all of these things, including the windows. Surprisingly, there was no recall issued for this issue, even though it can be quite dangerous if your car stops suddenly, regardless of your speed. Unfortunately, fixing this issue can cost up to $1,200.
Andy Barrows 2025-04-09
Vehicle year: 2006
I purchased this car in 2009 with 43K miles. Unfortunately, within 3 years, I had to replace the entire back end of the car, and sometimes certain pieces had to be replaced twice. The gas mileage is not great, as I only get 18 to 19 mpg in the city, and the maximum I've seen is only 23 mpg, and that was only once. Additionally, it seems like I now have to replace things in the front. Despite driving it very safely, there is bad vision out of the right window, making it difficult to see cars on the right side. It costs about $50.00 to fill a tank every week, which can be expensive. However, the car fits a lot of stuff inside and is extremely attractive. The fabric seats are starting to rip, but I have no pets or children in the car.

The PT Cruiser is experiencing several issues, including overheating, malfunctioning lights on the left side of the car, and a non-functional horn. Despite having all fuses and lights checked, the cause of these issues remains unknown. Unfortunately, these problems have prevented the car from passing inspection, which is a concern given that it has been owned for less than a year. Additionally, the car requires frequent antifreeze refills to prevent engine damage. It may be best to avoid purchasing a PT Cruiser.
