1991 Chevrolet Suburban problems
The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.
Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.
.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).
A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

Common 1991 Chevrolet Suburban problems
The 1991 Chevrolet Suburban is known for its robustness and reliability, but like any other vehicle, it has its fair share of common problems based on complaints from owners.
- Brake system problems: There have been recalls related to the foundation components of the brake system, the anti-lock/traction control/electronic limited slip system, and the service brakes. These recalls address issues such as leaks in the brake system, which can lead to reduced braking performance or even complete brake failure.
- Alternator and electrical system problems: The 1991 Chevrolet Suburban has had recalls related to the electrical system, specifically the alternator and generator. These recalls address issues such as the alternator not charging the battery properly, which can lead to the vehicle stalling or not starting at all.
- Automatic transmission issues: There have been several recalls related to the automatic transmission, including problems with the torque converter and the transmission itself. These recalls address issues such as the transmission slipping, not shifting properly, or not engaging at all.
- Exhaust system and engine cooling problems: The 1991 Chevrolet Suburban has had recalls related to the exhaust system and engine cooling system. These recalls address issues such as leaks in the exhaust system, which can lead to reduced engine performance or even engine failure. They also address issues with the engine cooling system, which can lead to overheating and engine damage.
- Engine problems: The 7th generation Suburban (1985-1991) ranks 2nd in reliability out of 80 generations, but there are still 6 complaints mostly about engine problems. These complaints include stalling when put into gear, difficulties starting, engine will not turn over, and running roughly when cold. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty sensors, worn-out components, or even engine design flaws.
- Electrical system problems: There have been complaints about the electrical system, specifically the lights. These complaints include the lights not going out when the key is turned off, which can lead to a dead battery or even a fire hazard.
- Suspension problems: There have been complaints about the suspension system, specifically the front suspension. These complaints include the suspension bottoming out, which can lead to a loss of control and a potential accident.
These are some of the most common problems with the 1991 Chevrolet Suburban based on complaints from owners. It is important to note that not all vehicles of this make and model will experience these issues, and many can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs.

- VIN: 1GNER16K4MF
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I HAVE A SET OF HANKOOK OPTIMO 727 TIRES ON MY FAMILY SUBURBAN, AND ONE OF THEM BLEW OUT SUDDENLY, AND UNEXPECTEDLY. THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT ONLY HAD 14,596 MILES ON IT. THE SIZE IS P235-75-15. ALL FOUR OF THESE TIRES WERE INSTALLED IN FEBRUARY 2016, AND THE VEHICLE WAS ALWAYS KEPT IN MY GARAGE. THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT SHOWED NO SIGNS OF SUN OZONE DEPLETION, AND AGAIN, IT NEVER SAT OUTSIDE IN THE SUN. ADDITIONALLY, THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT HAD ALOT OF TREAD DEPTH LEFT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT OVERLOADED, AS I WAS THE ONLY PERSON IN IT AT THE TIME OF THE BLOWOUT. I WAS SIMPLY DRIVING ABOUT 72 MPH DOWN INTERSTATE 65, JUST SOUTH OF LOUISVILLE, KY, I FELT SOME VIBRATION FOR ABOUT ONE MINUTE, THEN BOOM!, THE TIRE LET GO. I'M DISAPPOINTED IN HANKOOK TIRES, AND WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER.

1991 Chevrolet Suburban recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1991 Chevrolet Suburban.
- Manufacturer: HONEYWELL INTERNATIONAL, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: CERTAIN REPLACEMENT FUEL FILTERS, FRAM BRAND NAME P/N G3727, WITH DATE CODES X52911 THROUGH X60801 SEQUENTIALLY OR X600141 AND A MEXICO COUNTRY OR ORIGIN MARKING ON THE FUEL FILTER HOUSING MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 18, 2005, THROUGH MARCH 21, 2006, SOLD FOR USE ON THE VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE AND ON CERTAIN SCHOOL BUSES. (TO SEE THE SCHOOL BUS ENGINE SIZES, CLICK ON "DOCUMENT SEARCH" AND THEN "BUS APPLICATIONS"). THE CONNECTOR ON THE FUEL FILTER WAS NOT MANUFACTURED TO HONEYWELL'S SPECIFICATION. AS A RESULT, THE O-RING MAY NOT SEAT CORRECTLY ON THE FUEL LINE.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION MAY CAUSE AN INADEQUATE SEAL AT THE CONNECTION, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO A FUEL LEAK. IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FIRE COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: HONEYWELL WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE FUEL FILTERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 18, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FRAM CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-890-2075 (OPTION 1).
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: THE RECLINER MECHANISM AND THE SEAT FRAME MAY HAVE FOAM AND/OR VINYL VETWEEN THEM, CREATING A "SOFT" JOINT. THIS "SOFT" JOINT RESULTS IN LOWER THAN SPECIFIED BOLT TORQUE WHICH LEADS TO JOINT LOOSENESS, CAUSING BOLT FATIGUE AND EVENTUAL BOLT FAILURE.
- Consequence: IF BOLT FAILURE OCCURS TO THE DRIVER'S SEAT, IT WOULD ALLOW THE SEAT BACK TO SUDDENLY RECLINE, AND COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE FOAM AND/OR VINYL FROM BETWEEN THE RECLINER MECHANISM AND THE SEAT FRAME "SOFT" JOINT AND REPLACE THE RECLINER BOLTS.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:ROTOR
- Summary: SEVERE CORROSION DUE TO ROAD SALT AT THE JOINT OF THE STAMPED STEEL CENTER SECTION AND THE CAST OUTER SECTION CAN CAUSE THE SECTIONS TO SEPARATE.
- Consequence: SEPARATION OF THE ROTOR SECTIONS CAN CAUSE LOSS OFBRAKING ABILITY IN THE AFFECTED WHEEL. THIS COULD RESULT IN INCREASED STOPPINGDISTANCE AND/OR LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WITH NEW ROTORS WITH A CORROSION PROTECTION COATING. HOWEVER, IF REPLACEMENT OF BRAKE LININGS ARE NECESSARY, IT WILL BE DONE AT OWNER'S EXPENSE SINCE BRAKE LININGS ARE NORMAL MAINTENANCE ITEMS.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: UNANTICIPATED HEAT IN THE TRANSMISSION CAN FORCE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID OUT OF THE VENT TUBE.
- Consequence: THE VENTED TRANSMISSION FLUID CAN CATCH FIRE IF EXPOSEDTO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.
- Remedy: INSTALL A LONGER TRANSMISSION VENT HOSE ROUTED TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF THE VEHICLE.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my trusty old burb. I bought it back in '99 with 107,000 miles on it, and since then, I've had to replace a few things like the lower ball joints, heater core, blower motor, and brakes, but overall it's been a great ride. One of the best things about it is how easy it is to repair. It runs like a dream and gets a solid 16-17 mpg on the highway, and it can even tow a 3,000lb popup with ease! I have to say, I'm especially grateful for this old beast after my wife hit a 240lb deer at 55mph. While it did sustain some damage to the fender, hood, and passenger door, it held up incredibly well and kept my wife safe. We're actually in the market for a newer one, but it's hard to let go of such a reliable ride. If you're in the market for an old '91, I highly recommend it - you won't be disappointed!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 91 Suburban. I bought it used with 85,000 miles on it and it has been my trusty companion for 17 years now. With 344,000 miles on the clock, mostly from city driving and many trips to California and Arizona, it still runs better than any new car! The engine is still smooth and in great condition. Although it needed a new paint job, the interior is like new since I replaced the dash and headliner. All repairs have been just regular maintenance. I can always count on Betsy to take me anywhere safely. Unfortunately, someone hit me in 2015 and the car was totaled by insurance standards. Even though I lost all the water and oil, I had to turn the engine off, it was still running fine. I had told everyone to bury me in it. I had planned to keep it until one of us passed away. Now, I'm looking for a new old suburban. Thanks for listening!

I'm so glad you purchased this vehicle! Not only does it have 8 passenger seating, but it also came with a plow. The engine is incredibly powerful and can tow large loads with ease. It even plows snow without breaking a sweat. It sounds like your wife is a big fan of it too!

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your Suburban! It sounds like the 454 engine has been a great fit for your needs, especially when it comes to pulling a trailer and carrying passengers and bicycles. It's impressive that your vehicle is still running strong at 135,000 miles, even with regular repairs and maintenance. Thank you for sharing your positive experience and recommendation with us!
