2019 Chevrolet Express problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common 2019 Chevrolet Express problems

The 2019 Chevrolet Express has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to electrical systems, drivetrain, and interior comfort.

  • Dead Batteries: The most widespread complaint from 2019 Express van owners is dead batteries, which tend to show up at around 25,000 miles. The alternator is a known weak point in the Express, which fails to charge the battery when it fails. Replacing the alternator costs around $400, depending on local labor rates.
  • Weak A/C System: Some 2019 Express owners have reported a weak A/C system within the first 35,000 miles. The blower motor tends to wear out relatively quickly, leading to reduced airflow. Changing out the blower motor costs around $550, since it’s a fairly labor-intensive task.
  • Delayed Gear Changes: Delayed gear changes have been reported on some 2019 Express vans, usually within the first 1,000 miles. There are transmission control module software updates available which improve the performance of the transmission. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while others charge around $100 for labor.
  • Fuel Level Sensor Failure: 42 people have reported this issue, which can cause inaccurate fuel level readings. This problem has been found in the Chevrolet Express 2500, but it is unclear whether the 2019 model is affected.
  • Electrical System Recall: A recall was issued for certain 2019 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles due to an issue with the seatbelt-unfastened warning light. The light will not illuminate for approximately five seconds after the ignition is moved to the "on" or "start" position, which fails to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208.
  • Visibility Recall: Another recall was issued for certain 2016-2019 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles due to an issue with the rear-quarter windows. One or both of the rear-quarter windows may be tempered glass instead of laminated glass, which fails to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226.

These problems can lead to inconvenience, additional costs, and safety concerns for 2019 Chevrolet Express owners. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the vehicle's safe and reliable operation.

Negative 2019 Chevrolet Express car reviews

  1. Adolph Fay 2024-11-17

Hi there! I borrowed this vehicle for my growing family and unfortunately, it didn't quite meet our needs. Within just 5 minutes, we noticed that the kids had to duck under seat belts to get to the 3rd row and there were no headrests for the back rows. Additionally, we felt every bump in the road. It's a shame that the engineers didn't think this through more thoroughly. We're now saving up for a Mercedes Benz Sprinter which we hope will be a better fit for us!

  2. Tremaine Brakus 2024-09-05

Our family van is our second express. The first one was a 1999 12-passenger van, and the current one is a 2011 15-passenger van. We have no reason to sell it other than the fact that it's a little old to take on cross-country trips. It's great for local trips to Lowe's with the seats out or for family events with all or some of the seats back in. We drive it every day, but we don't want to pay the sticker price of a new one since they really haven't changed much over the years.

  3. Allan Christiansen 2024-08-29

I recently purchased three new 2017 GMC vans to replace our existing Ford vans for business purposes. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the vans and they have required warranty work and recalls a total of 12 times in the last year. While I am not a fan of the new Ford Transit vans, I may have reconsidered my decision if I had known about these issues beforehand. It's important to do your research and make an informed decision to avoid any potential issues. Thank you for considering this advice!

  4. Isadore Grimes 2024-02-25

The vehicle described in this review is not up to par with modern standards. The suspension is lacking and the interior is made of cheap materials. It is surprising that this car was released in 2018. A better option would be to test drive a Ford Transit before considering this vehicle.

Positive 2019 Chevrolet Express car reviews

  1. Ewell D'Amore 2025-01-03

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought this van used for my plumbing business and I'm really happy with it. The AWD is incredible in the snow, even better than any of the 4x4 trucks I've had in the past. It rides great, gets decent gas mileage at 14-15 MPG, and drives really nicely. The only thing I wish is that it came in an extended version. Thanks for listening!

  2. Mariano Pfeffer 2024-11-09

The Express is far superior to Ford's version and superior to all others I tried before I purchased it. I found it to be quiet, very powerful, comfortable, stylish, and with excellent workmanship. These features really stood out to me when comparing it to other options.

  3. Raul Carroll 2024-08-19

    Superb!!!

  4. Adrain Murazik 2024-06-02

The engine power of this van is great! I also have the rear camera monitor on the center mirror, which is really helpful. I think a parking assist option would be a great addition. The trip computer is amazing - it tells you exactly how long your fuel will last. I was really impressed. This van is great on gas, but of course, it depends on the driver. Hope you enjoy it!

  5. Tristin Ernser 2024-05-02

This Ford model offers more room than any other.
