Chevrolet Express 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.
In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.
Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common Chevrolet Express 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Express 1500 is a popular commercial van known for its versatility and reliability. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain common problems that affect its performance and longevity. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Check Engine Light and Misfire Due to Stuck Fuel Injectors: This issue is often caused by a buildup of carbon deposits on the fuel injectors, which can prevent them from functioning properly and cause the engine to misfire. This problem can also lead to a decrease in fuel efficiency and overall performance.
- Fuel Level Sensor Failure: This issue can cause the vehicle's fuel gauge to display incorrect information, leading to a risk of running out of fuel unexpectedly. This problem can be caused by a faulty fuel level sensor or a wiring issue.
- Intake Manifold Gaskets May Leak: This issue can cause a loss of engine power, a decrease in fuel efficiency, and a risk of engine damage due to fluid leakage. This problem can be caused by a faulty intake manifold gasket or a problem with the engine's cooling system.
- Equipment Problems: The Chevrolet Express 1500 has experienced several equipment-related issues over the years, including problems with the power windows, power locks, and audio system. These problems can range from minor inconveniences to major safety concerns.
- Fuel System Problems: The vehicle's fuel system has been the subject of several recalls due to issues with the fuel tank and fuel lines. These problems can lead to a risk of fuel leaks and fires, and can be caused by a variety of factors, including manufacturing defects and wear and tear.
- Brakes Problems: The Chevrolet Express 1500 has experienced several brake-related issues over the years, including problems with the brake lines, brake calipers, and brake pads. These problems can lead to a decrease in braking performance and a risk of accidents.
- Lighting Problems: The vehicle's lighting system has been the subject of several recalls due to issues with the headlights, taillights, and brake lights. These problems can lead to a decrease in visibility and a risk of accidents.
- Suspension Problems: The Chevrolet Express 1500 has experienced several suspension-related issues over the years, including problems with the shocks, struts, and springs. These problems can lead to a decrease in ride quality and a risk of accidents.
- Paint Problems: The vehicle's paint job has been the subject of several complaints from owners, including issues with peeling, flaking, and fading paint. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including exposure to the elements and poor quality paint.
It's important to note that these issues are not necessarily indicative of all Chevrolet Express 1500 vehicles, and that many owners have reported no problems with their vehicles. However, if you are experiencing any of these issues, it's important to have them addressed by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of yourself and others on the road.
Is a Chevy Express van reliable?
The Chevrolet Express 1500 Reliability Rating is 3.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 9th out of 21 for commercial vans. The average annual repair cost is $963 which means it has poor ownership costs.
How long do Chevy Express engines last?
If you have a 4.3 V6 250,000 miles would be good. If you have a 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L V8 all are LS based engines. Those engines if cared for properly 300,000 is not uncommon. If you drive it like you stole it all the time you will be lucky to make 150,000 miles.
What is the difference between a 1500 and 2500 Chevy Express van?
As trucks have grown larger and heavier over the years, it's now more common for the 1500 to be sold as a “light-duty truck.” The key difference between 1500 and 2500 models is towing power — but the latter is also equipped with specialized towing features that give it more flexibility when dealing with heavier loads.
How many MPG does a Chevy Express get?
This engine has an estimated EPA fuel economy rating of 16 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. However, fuel economy can vary depending on the specific model, such as the cargo van, passenger van, or cutaway, as well as the optional engines, such as the V8 engine.

- Date Complaint: 2008-05-27
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: WE OWN BOTH A 1998 AND 2000 EXPRESS VAN AND WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BOTH OF THEM WITH REGARDS TO THE SIDE PASSENGER DOORS (THE 'DOUBLE' DOORS). WE HAVE HAD A DEALER DRILL HOLES IN THE HINGES TO LUBRICATE THEM AS THEY SEIZE UP AND BECOME VERY HARD TO OPEN AND CLOSE. THIS IS JUST A TEMPORARY AND EVENTUALLY AN INEFFECTIVE FIX. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS WE HAVE 6 CHILDREN OF WHICH 3 HAVE TO SIT IN THE BACK SEAT AND IF THERE WERE TO BE AN EMERGENCY WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET THE LEFT DOOR OPEN TO GET THE KIDS OUT FASTER. *TR
Chevrolet Express 1500 1996
- Date Of Incident: 2008-04-10
- Date Complaint: 2008-04-12
- VIN: 1GBFG15R1T1
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: 96 CHEVY EXPRESS VAN, FAILED SIDE CARGO DOOR HINGES. THESE HINGES, PINS AND BUSHINGS, FAIL, SEIZE UP, AND THE SIDE CARGO DOORS ARE UNABLE TO BE OPENED. THIS MAKES IT UNSAFE FOR EXIT FROM THE VEHICLE FOR ANY PERSONS SITTING IN THE BACK OR REAR SEATS. GM KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE 4 SERVICE BULLETINS FOR THIS PROBLEM. DATED- SEPT. 24, 2001, MAY 01, 2002, JUNE 1, 2003, AND OCT 1, 2006... THE COST TO REPAIR THESE DOOR HINGES IS OUTRAGEOUS.. THEY ARE GM ONLY PARTS, AND TO REPLACE ALL 8 HINGES (THERE ARE 2 HINGES, BODY & DOOR, THAT MAKE UP 1 FULL HINGE. SO A TOTAL OF 8 ARE NEEDED TO REPLACE ALL) COST MINIMUM 115.00 A PIECE (SOME ARE MORE). THEN YOU ALSO HAVE TO REPLACE THE PINS AND BUSHINGS TO MAKE THE HINGES MOVE PROPERLY. THESE ARE 83.00 FOR JUST 2 PINS. SO TO DO ALL 4 HINGES YOU NEED 2 SETS. FOR A TOTAL TO COMPLETELY REPLACE ALL HINGES W/PINS AND BUSHINGS-- 1,036.00 JUST TO USE 2 DOORS ON YOUR VEHICLE. AND THAT ISN'T LABOR.. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.!!!!!!! THEY KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM, AND THEY ARE KEEPING THE REPLACEMENTS TO THEMSELVES... MEANWHILE, I HAVE 2 DOORS ON MY VAN, THAT WON'T OPEN, SO IF I DO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT, MY CHILDREN WON'T BE ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THANKS GM.. *TR
Chevrolet Express 1500 2000
- Date Of Incident: 2007-10-15
- Date Complaint: 2008-02-15
- VIN: 1GBFG15RXY1
- Components: SEATS,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: THE DRIVERS SEAT ON 2000 CHEVROLET EXPRESS VAN IS BECOMING DETACHED FROM THE BASE. THIS IS CAUSING THE SEAT TO UNEXPECTEDLY MOVE WHEN TURNING OR STOPPING. THE SEAT IS DETACHED IN THE REAR OF THE BASE AND ACTUALLY SWIVELS UP TOWARDS THE STEERING WHEEL. THERE IS CONCERN THAT THE SEAT WILL UNEXPECTEDLY MOVE CAUSING THE OPERATOR TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. IN AN EFFORT TO RECTIFY THE SEAT PROBLEM I ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE MAKER OF THE SEAT. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT AS PHONE MESSAGES AND E-MAILS WERE NOT RETURNED. THE SEAT DECAL AT THE BASE STATES THE SEAT WAS MANUFACTURED BY ATWOOD MOBILE PRODUCTS. AFTER FINALLY RECEIVING AN ANSWER FROM THEM, THEY STATED THE SEAT BASE IS AT FAULT AND WAS MANUFACTURED BY LLEBROC INDUSTRIES (817-831-6261). THE PICTURES I TOOK WERE SENT TO LLEBROC AND THEY ADVISED THE COMPLETE SEAT BASE MUST BE REPLACED. I PURCHASED THE SEAT BASE AT COST OF $245.00. THE BASE SENT APPEARS TO BE THE SAME AS THE BASE THAT CAME WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CLIPS THAT HOLD THE SEAT TO THE BASE ARE THIN PIECES OF METAL THAT ARE PRONE TO FAILURE AGAIN. I HAVE CONCERN THAT THESE MAY FAIL MUCH LIKE THE ORIGINAL HAD FAILED. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE BROKEN SEAT THAT MAY BE SENT IF THAT IS NECESSARY. *TR
