1991 Toyota Celica problems
The Toyota Celica (/ˈsɛlɪkə/ or /sɛˈliːkə/) (Japanese: トヨタ・セリカ, Hepburn: Toyota Serika) is an automobile produced by Toyota from 1970 until 2006. The Celica name derives from the Latin word coelica meaning heavenly or celestial. In Japan, the Celica was exclusive to the Toyota Corolla Store dealer chain. Produced across seven generations, the Celica was powered by various four-cylinder engines, and bodystyles included convertibles, liftbacks, coupés and notchback coupés.
In 1973, Toyota coined the term liftback to describe the Celica fastback hatchback, and used the name Liftback GT for the North American market. Like the Ford Mustang, the Celica concept was to attach a coupe body to the chassis and mechanicals from a high volume sedan, in this case the Toyota Carina. Some journalists thought it was based on the Corona due to some shared mechanical parts.
The first three generations of North American market Celicas were powered by variants of Toyota's R series engine. In August 1985, the car's drive layout was changed from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive turbocharged models were offered from 1986 to 1999. Variable valve timing came in certain Japanese models starting from December 1997 and became standard in all models from the 2000 model year. In 1986, the six-cylinder Celica Supra variant was spun off as a separate model, becoming simply the Supra. Lightly altered versions of the Celica were also sold through as the Corona Coupé through the Toyopet dealer network in the 1980s and as the Toyota Curren through the Vista network in the 1990s.
The Toyota Celica Liftback GT won Motor Trend Car of the Year (Imported Vehicle) in 1976.

Common 1991 Toyota Celica problems
The Toyota Celica 1991 is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. One of the most common issues is engine failure, which is often caused by a failed timing chain tensioner. This problem can lead to the engine not starting or making a rattling sound when it does start. The check engine light may also flash on, and the car may go into limp-home mode.
Another issue that affects the 1.8-litre models of the Toyota Celica 1991 is rough idling and misfires. This problem is caused by a well-known issue with valve performance, which is due to a soft valve seat that wears down quickly and corrodes over time. The only solution to this problem is to remove the cylinder head and rebuild it using new valves ordered from a parts supplier.
The ABS warning light is also a common problem in the Toyota Celica 1991. This issue is caused by a worn-out wheel speed sensor, which is a common problem in cars with high mileage. The solution to this problem is to order a replacement sensor and clean any rust or debris from the mounting area.
Incorrect gear changes are another issue that affects the automatic models of the Toyota Celica 1991. This problem is often caused by a throttle position sensor that is out of adjustment. The solution to this problem is to move the sensor to where it should be or replace it with a new one if necessary.
A high-pitched chirping sound at idle is another common problem in the Toyota Celica 1991. This issue is caused by a soft valve seat that wears down quickly and corrodes over time. The solution to this problem is to replace the revised tensioner, which should resolve the issue.
Braking issues are also a common problem in the Toyota Celica 1991. This problem is often caused by brake discs that can rust quickly during long periods of inactivity. The solution to this problem is to order new brake discs and pads from a parts supplier and install them easily.
A sluggish engine is another issue that affects the Toyota Celica 1991. This problem is often caused by a dirty fuel filter that needs to be cleaned thoroughly. In some cases, the filter may be too blocked for too long, and a replacement may be necessary.
Squealing sounds when starting the car are also a common problem in the Toyota Celica 1991. This issue is caused by tensioner pulleys that are close to breaking. The solution to this problem is to find new tensioner pulleys on a parts supplier's website and replace any faulty ones.
A loud squealing sound when starting the car is another common problem in the Toyota Celica 1991. This issue is often caused by a problem with the power steering pump or a leak in the power steering system. The solution to this problem is to check the power steering fluid level and top it up if necessary. If the problem persists, it may be necessary to replace the power steering pump or repair any leaks in the system.
The automatic transmission may not shift correctly at high mileages in the Toyota Celica 1991. This issue is often caused by worn-out transmission components that need to be replaced. The solution to this problem is to have the transmission inspected and repaired by a qualified mechanic.
The most common problem category in the Toyota Celica 1991 is engine problems. The most reported problem is a loud knocking noise from the engine, which can be caused by several issues, including worn-out engine components, low engine oil levels, or a faulty engine mount.
In summary, the Toyota Celica 1991 is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These problems include engine failure, rough idling and misfires, ABS warning light, incorrect gear changes, high-pitched chirping sound at idle, braking issues, sluggish engine, squealing sounds when starting the car, and engine problems. The solutions to these problems vary, but in most cases, they involve replacing worn-out parts or repairing damaged components.

I bought my ST from a Toyota mechanic who rebuilt the engine at 172k miles. At 231k the engine still runs flawlessly, but peripheral systems are falling like dominoes. It's been a very reliable car until this summer. The car corners great although the turning radius is a little wide for this size of a vehicle. I love taking 25 mph corners at 55-60 mph! The car has low power, but it gets around 36 mpg.

This car is a great balance between fuel economy and performance. In these times of rising fuel prices and desired performance, it's a perfect fit. Even when I drive it relatively hard, I still get 27+ MPG. Although I want to trade it in for a four-door Corolla or Echo, it has been too good to my wife and me to get rid of it!

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you my experience with my car. It's been my trusty companion for almost 12 years now and I've kept it around as a backup for the past 7 years because it's just so reliable. Even at 249,000 miles, I've only had to replace the exhaust manifold. My wife and I are huge fans of Toyota cars - in fact, I now own a 03 Tacoma Prerunner and she drives an 03 Camery XLE. Thanks for listening!

I love my 91 Toyota Celica GT-S! The car is amazing, with over 148,000 miles and still going strong. It's incredibly dependable and shows no signs of slowing down. Driving it is a blast, and the features just add to the joy. If you can, definitely get one of these!

At 235,000 miles, my car is still going strong! I've replaced the clutch and a few sets of tires, and with regular oil changes, it still runs like new. I would buy another one in a minute, and my husband and I are already thinking about it. It's a very well thought out car. Yes, they may be a little more expensive than some cars, but you always get what you pay for!

Although this vehicle is my first car, I am confident in my assessment of its qualities. While it has many great features, I believe that the standard engine of this model could benefit from more horsepower and torque. Living in an area with steep hills and bridges, I require a vehicle that can handle these challenges with ease. Unfortunately, the current engine falls short in this regard. Despite this setback, I still appreciate the car's great gas mileage and other positive attributes.
