A preview of the facelifted 2015 A7 Sportback, the vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
First generation (Type 4G8; 2010)
Initial release
The A7 is in essence a four-door fastback version of the C7-series Audi A6, based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform. The A7 was released before the more conventional A6 saloon/estate. Both cars share the same core structure, drivetrain, chassis, dashboard and interior, whilst the A7 has its own unique exterior panelwork. It also differs from the A6 in that it uses aluminium for much of its front body structure. The A7 was also the first fastback to appear within the Audi C-platform series since the Avant version of the C2 Audi 100, which was discontinued in 1982. The vehicle was unveiled in Pinakothek der Moderne art museum in Munich on 26 July 2010, and later at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, 2011 New York Auto Show, and Wörthersee Tour 2011 (in Misano Red).
The vehicles went on sale in autumn 2010. Early models include 2.8 FSI (204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp)) with multitronic, 3.0 TFSI quattro (300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp)) with seven-speed S tronic, 3.0 TDI quattro (245 PS (180 kW; 242 hp)) with seven-speed S tronic; followed by 3.0 TDI (204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp)) with multitronic.
The 2011 model year A7 introduces FlexRay high speed databus that controls all the driver assistance systems from the A8, but it adds head-up display and active lane assist. Full LED headlamps with Automatic high beam switching or Audi adaptive light (Xenon) with variable headlight range control. US models went on sale 2012 model year vehicles. Early models include 3.0 TFSI quattro (310 PS (228 kW; 306 hp)) with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

WE MANAGED TO GET IT TO AN AUDI DEALER AND IT WAS DETERMINED BOTH TURBOCHARGERS WERE BROKEN. BOTH SHAFTS HAD SNAPPED AND THE CAR WAS UN-DRIVABLE LEAVING US STRANDED IN GEORGIA. THIS IS A DESIGN ISSUE FOR THE 4.0T ENGINES AND VW/AUDI HAS REFUSED TO IMPLEMENT A FIX BESIDE THE OIL SCREEN BAND-AID. THE OIL SCREEN, SINCE IT IS NOT SERVICEABLE, WILL SLOWLY ACCUMULATE DEBRIS AND RESTRICT OIL FLOW TO THE TURBOS AND CAUSE THEM TO BE STARVED OF OIL. SIMPLY REMOVING THIS OIL SCREEN WOULD BE A SUITABLE FIX BUT AUDI HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR DESIGN IS FAULTY. THIS FAILURE COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF THEY WERE TO CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO STALL AT SPEED OR WORSE, HAVE THE ENGINE IGNITE DO TO THE MENTAL ON METAL GRINDING OF THE TURBO TURBINE. PLEASE HELP US.

I INSTANTLY MERGED RIGHT WITH FLASHERS HAVING TO AVOID ANOTHER ON RAMP OF TRAFFIC. AT VERY ROUGH IDLE I COULD NOT ACCELERATE BEYOND 1100 RPM I TRIED MOVING AGAIN AS THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO WORK BUT VERY ROUGH IDLE AND AGAIN, WOULD NOT GO BEYOND 1100RPM. IT WAS TOWED TO SHOP. THEY NOTATED "CATASTROPHIC TURBO FAILURE ON BOTH BANKS". THEY SAID IT WAS DUE TO A COMMON PROBLEM THEY HAVE NOTICED OF AN OIL CHECK VALVE FILTER SCREEN. I RECENTLY HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY SERVICE DONE BY DEALER. KNOWING THE VALVE HAS HAD ISSUES, I TEXTED THE TECH ABOUT THIS VALVE AND HIS RESPONSE WAS IT WAS NOT CONVENIENT TO ACCESS. I HAVE TEXTS FROM TECH AS THIS IS THE BEST WAY FOR THEM TO COMMUNICATE. ABOUT 1 HOUR LEFT UNTIL WE GET HOME, WE HIT TRAFFIC AND LUCKILY WE DECIDED TO CHANGE 1 LANE TO THE RIGHT FROM THE FARTHEST LEFT(FAST LANE) BEFORE HITTING A FULL STOP. THAT MOMENT, CAR STALLED AND IT WON'T LET ME RESTART THE CAR. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON AS I CANNOT EVEN TURN THE CAR OFF/ON AND THE ELECTRONICS WON'T WORK ON ME AS WELL. I AM NOW COMPLETELY BLOCKING THE 2ND LANE FROM THE LEFT OF A 4 LANE FREEWAY WITH A 70 MPH SPEED LIMIT. LUCKILY I AM NOT ALONE IN THE CAR AND MY DAD IS CLOSELY FOLLOWING BEHIND US TO HELP ME PUSH THE CAR 2 MORE LANES TO THE RIGHT TO GET TO THE SHOULDERS. WAS ALSO FORTUNATE THAT THERE WAS A CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL RESPONDING TO A 911 CALL WHOM HELPED US BY BLOCKING THE LANES BUT HAD TO LEAVE RIGHT AFTER AFTER ASKING US IF WE ARE GOING TO BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT HIM. I COULD NOT IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS BY MYSELF WITHOUT NOBODY I KNOW AROUND ME. I WONDER IF PEOPLE WOULD HAVE STOPPED AND HELP ME OUT OR I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY HURT AS MY CAR WAS TOTALLY STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF A 4 LANE FREEWAY AND CANNOT EVEN RESTART IT TO LIMP IT TO THE SIDE SHOULDERS. I CALLED MY MERCURY INSURANCE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE BUT 30 MINS LATER, THE PROMISED TOW TRUCK COMPANY STILL HASN'T CALLED. I DECIDED TO GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY, CAR CRANKS BUT WON'T TURN. SUCCESSFULLY RESTARTED IT BY SLIGHTLY PRESSING ON THE GAS BUT WILL STALL AGAIN AFTER THE RPM FALLS BELOW 800 RPM. STILL NO TOW TRUCK, I TOLD MY FAMILY THAT I WILL GIVE IT A GO AS I WILL TRY TO KEEP THE RPM MORE THAN 800 RPM BUT FOLLOW ME CLOSELY IF THE CAR COMPLETELY DIES ON ME AGAIN. CAR IS NOW AT AN AUDI DEALERSHIP.

- Summary: WE LEASED AN AUDI S7 WHICH WE WERE NOT MADE AWARE OF HAVING A FUEL LINE ISSUE AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRANSACTION. THE DEALERSHIP MENTIONED THEY WERE DETAILING THE CAR AND GETTING IT READY FOR US. WHEN WE WENT INTO THE GARAGE TO SEE THE CAR, IT WAS NOT BEING DETAILED, BUT THE BACK SEATS WERE REMOVED AND GAS WAS BEING SIPHONED FROM THE VEHICLE. WE WERE SHOCKED AND ASKED THE SERVICE TECHNICIANS WHAT THE HECK THEY WERE DOING. WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY WERE PERFORMING SERVICE TO MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE RUNS WELL. THIS WAS VERY DECEPTIVE BUT SINCE WE HAD ALREADY SIGNED THE CONTRACT, WE GAVE THEM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. THE CAR HAS SMELLED LIKE GASOLINE INSIDE THE CABIN SINCE WE LEASED IT. IT HAS MADE MYSELF, WIFE, AND OTHER FAMILY AND FRIENDS NAUSEOUS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. I REPORTED THIS TO THE KEYES AUDI DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND ALL THEY COULD TELL ME WAS TO WAIT FOR THE SMELL TO GO AWAY. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, BUT SINCE I HAD BEEN TRAVELING AND NOT USING THE CAR MUCH IT WASN'T A MAJOR PRIORITY UNTIL RECENTLY. A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, I NOTIFIED AUDI CORPORATE REGARDING MY SERIOUS CONCERN AND THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. WE DID THIS, AND THE SERVICE CONSULTANT TOLD MY WIFE AND I THEY HAD REPLACED THE FUEL LINE PRIOR TO OUR LEASING OF THE VEHICLE BUT THAT THEY "MAY HAVE" REPLACED A FUEL PUMP THE DAY WE PICKED THE VEHICLE UP AND THAT GASOLINE MIGHT BE ON THE SEATS SINCE THAT'S WHERE THE PUMP IS LOCATED. I PROCEEDED TO ASK HIM HOW IT'S POSSIBLE THAT A FUEL PUMP ON A BRAND NEW CAR GOES BAD ALL OF A SUDDEN AND SPILLS GAS ON MY SEATS AND HE TOLD ME IT HAPPENS ALL OF THE TIME. LUDICROUS. MY WIFE AND I ARE EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE AND FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN A HIGH END VEHICLE THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH FUEL LINES/PUMPS OR ANYTHING RELATED. - Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2013-2017 A8, S6 Sedan, S7, S8, and 2014-2017 RS7 vehicles. The turbocharger oil supply strainer can become blocked, causing wear to the bearings due to lack of lubrication.
- Consequence: Worn bearings can cause the turbine wheel to contact the turbocharger housing or cause the shaft to break, causing an engine stall and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the oil strainer and perform an oil change, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 4, 2022. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 21H7.

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Audi S6 and S7, 2012-2018 A7 and A6 Sedan, and 2014-2018 RS7 vehicles equipped with basic seats (with or without heating). Stress or wear of the body-sensing mat within the front passenger seat may cause the Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) control module to malfunction.
- Consequence: If the PODS module malfunctions, the front passenger air bag may not deploy properly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a PODS system repair kit, free of charge. The recall began November 29, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 74D5.

The tire information label on these vehicles incorrectly lists the combined maximum weight as 1146 lbs/520 kg, when the correct combined maximum weight is actually 992 lbs/450 kg. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
- Consequence: If the operator were to load the vehicle based on information on the tire information label, they could overload the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the tire information label, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 44N9.

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Audi S6 and S7 vehicles equipped with 4.0L engines. Due to manufacturing tolerance issues, a fuel line may leak fuel.
- Consequence: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel line, free of charge. The safety recall is planned to begin in late October 2013. Owners may contact Audi of America at 1-800-822-2834. Volkswagen's number for this campaign is 20U6/L8.

I absolutely love the fit and finish of this car! The silver leather quilted interior is excellent, and I always get a lot of compliments on it. The acceleration and handling are the best things about it, and they never fail to impress me. The turbos are fabulously smooth and will put you back into your seat. The only downside is the cost of maintenance, which can be quite expensive. However, I still love the car despite this. The value has not decreased much since the last review, so that has leveled off. It's like a 35-year marriage: not perfect, but solid! I still can't part with it, despite the outdated tech - but what it does have works well! Guess I'll keep her!

I've been driving my S7 for two weeks now and it's been an amazing experience. I recently switched from my Porsche 911 as I wanted a more refined driving experience. The S7 is incredibly powerful, yet quiet and nimble, making it a joy to drive. The combination of driving performance, technology, and comfort is truly astonishing and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I've noticed that people tend to stare and compliment my S7 more than they did with my 911, which is something I really appreciate. When people say 'I love your car', I always respond with 'Thank you, I love it too!'.

The price was a bit higher than what I was hoping for, but this car met all of my criteria for the perfect vehicle. As someone who has owned many cars, I can confidently say that this one is a winner. The pros include long trip comfort, exhilarating acceleration, impressive braking (although it may put you at risk of being rear-ended in traffic), top-of-the-line high-speed handling, and excellent fuel economy for a high-performance sedan. Overall, this is a very well-balanced vehicle. The only downside is that the dealer maintenance costs are relatively high.
