It is also available as a three-box, four-door saloon in China since 2021.

Audi Sportback concept (2009)

The Audi Sportback concept is a concept vehicle powered by a 3.0-litre V6 TDI clean diesel engine rated at 225 PS (165 kW; 222 hp) and 550 N⋅m (406 lbf⋅ft) of torque. It features a 7-speed S tronic transmission, quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, five-link front suspension, continuous damping control shock absorbers, electromechanical steering, ceramic brake discs (380 mm front and 356 mm rear), front 6-piston monobloc aluminium brake calipers, rear floating-caliper brakes and 21-inch wheels. First generation (Type 4G8; 2010)

Initial release

The A7 is in essence a four-door fastback version of the C7-series Audi A6, based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform. The A7 was released before the more conventional A6 saloon/estate. Both cars share the same core structure, drivetrain, chassis, dashboard and interior, whilst the A7 has its own unique exterior panelwork. It also differs from the A6 in that it uses aluminium for much of its front body structure. The A7 was also the first fastback to appear within the Audi C-platform series since the Avant version of the C2 Audi 100, which was discontinued in 1982. The vehicle was unveiled in Pinakothek der Moderne art museum in Munich on 26 July 2010, and later at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, 2011 New York Auto Show, and Wörthersee Tour 2011 (in Misano Red).

The vehicles went on sale in autumn 2010. Early models include 2.8 FSI (204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp)) with multitronic, 3.0 TFSI quattro (300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp)) with seven-speed S tronic, 3.0 TDI quattro (245 PS (180 kW; 242 hp)) with seven-speed S tronic; followed by 3.0 TDI (204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp)) with multitronic.

The 2011 model year A7 introduces FlexRay high speed databus that controls all the driver assistance systems from the A8, but it adds head-up display and active lane assist. Full LED headlamps with Automatic high beam switching or Audi adaptive light (Xenon) with variable headlight range control. US models went on sale 2012 model year vehicles. Early models include 3.0 TFSI quattro (310 PS (228 kW; 306 hp)) with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Common 2016 Audi S7 problems

The 2016 Audi S7 has been reported to have several common issues, primarily related to the engine and turbochargers. These turbocharger issues have been a significant concern for 2016 S7 owners, often leading to expensive repairs.

In addition to turbocharger problems, the 2016 Audi S7 has also been associated with engine stalls due to worn-out turbocharger bearings. If the turbine wheel touches the housing or if the shaft breaks, it can cause the engine to stall, posing a risk as the car could suddenly stop while driving. This issue is related to the turbocharger's worn-out bearings and is considered a safety risk.

Another common problem with the 2016 Audi S7 is related to the DSG transmission. Audi's DSG transmissions have multiple problems resulting in violent shaking as it shifts between gears, especially while accelerating or slowing down through 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear.

The twin-turbochargers in Audi's 4.0L V8 engine can also become starved of oil because of a clogged filter, leading to strange acceleration noises, difficulty starting the engine, or sudden stalls. This issue is caused by a clogged filter in the twin-turbochargers, which can result in various engine problems.

In summary, the 2016 Audi S7 has several common issues related to the engine, turbochargers, and transmission. These problems can result in expensive repairs, catastrophic engine failure, and safety risks while driving. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing a used 2016 Audi S7.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-06
  • VIN: WAUW2AFC0GN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: The car was driving perfectly fine until last week heading to drop my kids to school and the vehicle stopped on the middle of the street. I had no previous issues or notice. I had multiple warnings on the dashboard and now the car won't crank. I have seen several post with people with this same issue and can't find a clear answer. I had to push the vehicle out of the road with traffic behind

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-28
  • VIN: WAUW2AFC8GN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have a 2016 Audi S7 that uses the notorious 7-speed DSG transmission. I started to notice some random jerking when I pull the car from the red light a month before the car completely dead on me in April 2021. One time when I was driving on the highway at 70mph it throws a "transmission malfunction" code on my dash and put my car in Limp Mode (only 1,3,5,7 gear available). I also experience gear slipping when putting the car in reverse, when putting the car in reverse, 9/10 times the R gear won't engage at all, and the onetime the R gear will only engage when the gas pedal is pressed way down, resulting in the car shooting backward and potentially putting anyone behind the car in danger. One time I almost got rear-ended when the car suddenly stalled at a crossroad when pulling from a red light, because the car decided to shift in neutral instead of 2nd gear. I had to restart the car couple of times to drive it in Limp Mode and created a traffic jam at a very busy crossroad. After I did some extensive search on this issue, I believe the mechatronic unit has design flaws that after some miles (in my case 40000 miles) are bound to fail. And since the manufacturer's warranty only covers the drivetrain for cars that is either 5 years old or within 36000 miles, I have to replace the mechatronic unit out of my pocket, which is a major burden on my financial situation. There weren't any warning lights prior to the failure, and the only symptom is the random jerking when upshift or downshifting but I was told it is normal to the 7 speed DSG gearbox my car was using. I had Audi Tysons Corner did a diagnosis and they respond that a new mechatronic needs to be put in. I have attached the report they send me. They also send me a picture of the leaking fluid in the transmission pan which I attached also. I ended up putting a new Mechatronic Unit in and I was told it is an Upgrade version from a local Audi-authorized dealer I am attaching the invoice here.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-28
  • VIN: Wauw2afcxgn
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine died on the New Jersey turnpike going 70 mph. Had to coast to shoulder. Sat on the side of the highway with children in back seat for 45 mins waiting for tow which is extremely dangerous. No warning lights before or after the issue. Had to be towed to dealer. Dealer confirmed turbo system failed.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-14
  • VIN: WAUW2AFC3GN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car drove normally at highway speed for approximately 4 hours. Upon leaving the highway and attempting to accelerate onto a secondary road into oncoming traffic, the engine shuttered. The car drove erratically for about a mile with hesitation and shuttering. After stopping at a stop sign at a very busy intersection, the engine failed completely. The Electronic Power Control warning light appeared. The engine would not restart on repeated attempts. After dealing with following traffic for several minutes, a passer by assisted with pushing the car to the side of the road. During this time, the steering and brakes barely worked and I was just able to avoid hitting a parked car due to these disablements. Note that the manual for the car includes very little information about this warning light other than "to have the function corrected as soon as possible" by an Audi dealer. There were no prior warning lights or degradations in performance. This was a catastrophic failure. The car went from performing normally to complete failure in a matter of minutes. During this sequence my wife and I were at risk as well as the drivers who were forced to enter the oncoming traffic lane to go around me and the passer by who assisted. Due to the position of the car, the tow truck operator was also at risk as were passing drivers at the time of the tow. I am told by the Audi Dealer in Rutland, VT that both turbochargers failed. This is apparently due to the clogging of an oil screen which filters oil before entering the turbos. My understanding is that this is known problem to Audi. It is very expensive to access the oil screen to determine if it is clogged. My car has only approximately 48,000 miles on it and it has received all indicated services and oil changes. There are aftermarket solutions to fix this problem which Audi has failed to implement or recommend. I was never made aware of this being a potential problem by Audi or my Audi dealer.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
  • VIN: wauw2bfc8gn
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Car only has 29,489 miles and has been serviced at Audi for every 1yr and now has turbo failure at a cost of 12k.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-10
  • VIN: WAUW2AFC8GN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AT 40K MILES, I'VE BEEN NOTICING THE SYMPTOMS OF A DYING MECH UNIT (BANG/JERK TO STOP, SHIFTING FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE), ETC. THOSE SYMPTOMS HAPPENED WHEN I PULL UP FROM STATIONARY, PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. CAR WILL ALSO THROW TRANSMISSION ERROR CODE ON DASHBOARD AND PUT IN "LIMP MODE" FROM TIME TO TIME. SINCE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, AUDI QUOTED ME $5800 TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE MECHATRONIC UNIT. MANY THREADS ON THE AUDI FORUM CONFIRM THE ISSUE WAS DUE TO QUALITY CONTROL ON AUDI'S PART, AND AUDI REFUSED TO ISSUE A CALLBACK OR PAY FOR THE EXPENSE FOR OUT-OF-WARRANTY CARS WITH FALUTY 7-SPEED DSG TRANSMISSION.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-26
  • VIN: WAUW2AFC4GN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: EXPERIENCED TURBOCHARGER FAILURE WHEN COMING TO A STOP AFTER GETTING OFF THE INTERSTATE AFTER APPROXIMATE 2.5 HOURS OF DRIVING. ENGINE DIED AS CAR SLOWED DOWN SO SUSPECT THE TURBOS FAILED WHILE DRIVING BUT RAM AIR FROM INTERSTATE SPEEDS WAS ADEQUATE TO MAINTAIN THE ENGINE UNTIL IT SLOWED DOWN. THE EXTENDED RUN TIME WITH FAILED TURBOS RESULTED IN METAL FRAGMENTS IN THE OIL SO AFTER INSPECTION, THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH A USED ENGINE. THIS ENGINE HAS APPROXIMATELY 58K MILES ON IT AND I THINK THE REPLACEMENT ENGINE HAD 11K OR SO ON IT. THIS OCCURRED ON DEC 26TH, 2019. THIS PAST FEBRUARY, 2021, NOTED AN ODD WHISTLE SOUND FROM THE TURBO BUT NO WARNING LIGHTS AND SLIGHTLY SLUGGISH ACCELERATION. THE FOLLOWING DAY IT SEEMED TO RUN FINE ON MY WAY TO WORK BUT ON THE WAY BACK IT RAN ROUGH AND THEN DIED SO I HAD TO STEER OFF THE ROAD INTO A PARKING LOT AS I LOST POWER STEERING. FURTHER INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THAT ONE TURBOCHARGER HAD COMPLETELY FAILED (THE TURBINE WHEEL WAS COMPLETELY SHEERED OFF) AND THE OTHER HAD EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE SHAFT. THE 75K FACTORY MAINTENANCE HAD JUST BEEN PERFORMED IN DECKER, 2020, AS HAD THE 65K MAINTENANCE EARLIER IN THE YEAR. SINCE THE REPLACEMENT ENGINE WAS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER A USED PARTS WARRANTY OR MY EXTENDED WARRANTY, THE COST OF TURBO REPLACEMENT WAS ENTIRELY OUT OF POCKET. I ALSO HAD TO PAY FOR SOME EXTRA WORK ON THE FIRST ENGINE REPLACEMENT DUE TO DISCOVERY OF EXTRA WORK REQUIRED FOR THE SWAP THAT WASN'T IN THE INITIAL QUOTE TO THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY.

STEERING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-04
  • VIN: WAUW2AFCXGN
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE
  • Summary: AS I WAS PULLING OFF THE INTERSTATE TO USE THE RESTROOM, MY ENGINE LOST ALL POWER. I LOST CONTROL OF POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES WHILE IN MOTION. I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT THE STOP SIGN. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR TEMPORARILY AND ENOUGH TO PULL INTO THE GAS STATION RIGHT OFF THE INTERSTATE. I DID NOT THINK THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG AND WENT TO USE THE BATHROOM. WHEN I CAME BACK OUTSIDE TO THE CAR IT WOULD NOT START. I HAD TO USE MY INSURANCE COMPANY ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO AN AUDI DEALERSHIP. THE AUDI SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED ME THAT I HAD A TURBO FAILURE. THERE WAS SCORCHING PRESENT WHEN THE SR TECH VIEWED THE TURBO WITH A BORESCOPE. THE CAR IS KNOWN FOR THIS ISSUE AND HASN'T BEEN RECALLED. THERE ARE 2 TSBS THAT ARE RELATED TO TURBO FAILURE FOR THESE CARS, TSB2044640/9. THANK GOODNESS I HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I WILL HAVE 2 NEW TURBOS, A NEW OIL SCREEN AND PCV DUE TO THIS ISSUE AND THAT IS A 5 FIGURE COST.

Positive 2016 Audi S7 car reviews

  1. Kellen Farrell 2024-11-29

I've been driving my S7 for two weeks now and it's been an amazing experience. I recently switched from my Porsche 911 as I wanted a more refined driving experience. The S7 is incredibly powerful, yet quiet and nimble, making it a joy to drive. The combination of driving performance, technology, and comfort is truly astonishing and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I've noticed that I get more compliments and stares on my S7 than I ever did on my 911, which is something I really appreciate as a car enthusiast. When people tell me they love my car, I always respond with a smile and say, 'Thank you, I love it too!'.

  2. Ed Cartwright 2024-11-27

I purchased a 2016 S7 in February 2019, just off lease, with 19,400 miles on the clock. After test driving it with two other people waiting to drive it, I decided to buy it. I'm so glad I did! This car is amazing - it's powerful, fast, and comfortable. The active cruise control is a great feature, especially when someone cuts in front of you and slows down. It's definitely better than my wife's 2017 Q5 3.0T V6. If you get one, you won't regret it. However, I change the engine oil every 4000 to 5000 miles, instead of the Audi recommended 10,000 miles. It's cheap insurance considering the cost of twin turbo repairs. I used to have a 2008 Nissan Altima V6 with CVT, which I sold in December 2018 with 172,400 miles on it. I also changed the oil every 4000 miles in that car, and it ran like a top even at highway speeds with passing at over 100 miles per hour. The V6 was strong, and the Audi 4.0 is good too. It now has 33,000 miles on it. The engine is high performance, so I prefer to change the oil frequently. Overall, it's a great car - eye candy with its black color, black optic, black wheels, and black chrome.

If you're looking for a car that can fit your kids, their sports equipment, golf clubs, or suitcases, and still want a Cayman as your daily driver, then the S7 is the perfect car for you! Compared to my previous car, a 550i, the S7 has a very different character. It's much faster and has better steering feel than the BMW. The S7 is loaded with cool tech, as expected from a car in the $100k range. Audi's navigation and safety aids are great, but I wouldn't plan on using the traffic jam assist too much. The heads-up display is a must-have option for me, and is far better than the BMW's was. The sport seats are not just cool looking, they're very supportive in spirited driving, and comfortable for long drives. This car will eat up miles comfortably on road trips, and the sound system is excellent. Even the kids love it, with their own seat heaters and temperature control in back. I compared the 650i, Panamera, and this, and from my test drives and comparison, I liked the Panamera (after the re-design) best, but to equip it anywhere close to the S7 Prestige, you'd have to add another $25k or $30k in options to the Panamera 4S. The nickel-and-diming was too much for me. The 650i and S7 are more similar, but have a different feel. I had driven BMWs for a while and liked the additional speed and steering feel/feedback from the Audi, as well as the look, and the space from the liftback. The M6 tempted me, as the performance is ridiculous, but the tradeoffs in everyday drivability and conveniences (e.g., no sunroof) moved me back to the Audi. However, I have no regrets on selecting the S7 - I've had it for years now and still enjoy every drive!

  4. Edd McClure 2024-10-08

I absolutely love the fit and finish of this car! The silver leather quilted interior is excellent, and I always get a lot of compliments on it. The acceleration and handling are the best things about it, and they never fail to impress me. The turbos are fabulously smooth and will put you back into your seat. The only downside is the cost of maintenance, which can be quite steep. However, I still love the car despite this. I have had it for three years now, and it has held its value quite well. Although, I do wish it held its value better. I was going to trade it in for a 2020 BMW last year, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I bought an X5 as my daily driver, but I still kept my Audi. The service can be tough, and it can get pricey, but it's worth it for the feel of the car, the smoothness of the amazing acceleration, and the handling through winding roads. It's like a 35-year marriage: it's not perfect, but it's solid! I still can't part with it, despite the outdated tech - but what it does have works well! I guess I'll keep her!

  5. Reilly Abernathy 2024-03-21

The price was a bit higher than what I was hoping for, but this car met all of my criteria for the perfect vehicle. As someone who has owned many cars, I can confidently say that this one is a winner. The pros include long trip comfort, exhilarating acceleration, impressive braking (although it may make other drivers a bit nervous), top-notch high-speed handling, and excellent fuel economy for a high-performance sedan. Overall, this is a very well-balanced vehicle. The only downside is that dealer maintenance costs are relatively high.
