Volkswagen Eurovan Problems and Issues

The Volkswagen Eurovan has been known to have several common problems and issues, based on complaints from owners of this car. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems:

  • Power Loss and Stalls: Some Eurovan owners have reported sudden power loss and stalling while driving, especially when accelerating over 60 mph. This can be caused by a problem with the fuel pressure, and it is recommended to scan the vehicle to identify the specific issue.
  • Engine Failure: Eurovan owners have reported issues with the engine, including engine mounting failure and loss of power. These issues can be caused by wear and tear, and it is recommended to replace the engine mounts and check the crankshaft sensor.
  • Acceleration Failure: Some Eurovan owners have reported issues with acceleration, especially when starting the engine. This can be caused by a problem with the throttle body, pedal connections, or computer kit, and it is recommended to check these components.
  • EGR Valve Failure: Eurovan owners have reported issues with the EGR valve, which can cause power loss and stalling. It is recommended to check the EGR valve and replace it if necessary.
  • Steering Rack Failure: Some Eurovan owners have reported issues with the steering rack, which can cause difficulty steering and require replacement. This issue can be expensive to fix, as it often requires replacing other components as well.
  • Oil Change Issues: Eurovan owners have reported issues with the engine losing power after an oil change. It is recommended to check the crankshaft sensor and other engine components to identify the specific issue.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Eurovan owners. It is important to note that these issues can be expensive to fix, and it is recommended to have the vehicle checked by a certified mechanic to identify and address any issues as soon as possible.

  • Date Complaint: 2015-12-07
  • VIN: WV2MH47H016
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE IS THAT AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE AND HEAT BUILDS UP INSIDE THE GAS TANK WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND TO EVEN A GREATER EXTENT WHEN IN STOP-N-GO TRAFFIC OR SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT IDLING. THE RESULT IS THAT WHEN OPENING THE GAS CAP FROM HOT FUMES AND FUEL SPRAY OUT AFTER RUNNING THE VEHICLE FOR LESS THAN AN HOUR. THERE ARE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS OR CHECKS IN PLACE TO WARN OR PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN! I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THE VW DEALER FOR OVER ONE YEAR NOW BUT STILL NO RESOLVE. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF VW OF AMERICA THEIR CERTIFIED MECHANICS HAVE SYSTEMATICALLY REPLACED ALMOST ALL OF THE COMPONENTS RELATING TO THE FUEL SYSTEM BUT TO NO RESOLVE. AT THIS POINT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST AND THE DEALERSHIP IS RELUCTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GAS TANK IS ACTUALLY HEATING UP EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE REPRODUCED THE RESULTS IN THEIR SHOP. I DO HAVE A VIDEO OF THE PROBLEM IN ACTION BUT AM UNABLE TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU THROUGH THE DOCUMENT UPLOADING SYSTEM. BY THE WAY I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD IT SERVICED AT THE CERTIFIED VW DEALERSHIP.

OF AMERICA, WHICH I DID IMMEDIATELY, AS I SPOKE WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. I WAS TOLD THAT VW. USES THE SAME BRAKE PADS FOR ALL VEHICLES FROM THE BEETLE TO THE SUV'S AND CAMPERS. THAT DIDN'T MAKE ANY SENSE AND AS I WENT FURTHER INTO THE DISCUSSION, WAS DIRECTED TO THE ENGINEERS FOR MORE CLARIFICATION SINCE THEY WOULD BE MORE INDICATED . AS I SPOKE WITH AN ENGINEER, THEY TOLD ME YES THAT VW. USES THE SAME BRAKE FOR A VEHICLE OF 2000PDS. AS WELL 6000PDS. AS I TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT USING THE SAME BRAKES ON HEAVIER VEHICLES VW. Latest negative Volkswagen Eurovan car reviews

  1. Constantin Baumbach 2025-02-16

    Vehicle year: 2002

As a salesman with bulky samples to lug around, I find this car perfect. It may look small from the outside, but it is huge inside. Although the 'removable' seats aren't very sophisticated, the handling is quite good and it feels solid. It did take me a while to 'get used to' the driving position, which is a bit awkward, but overall it suits my needs quite well. I do wish it had the Passat tilt wheel and a REAL overdrive to help improve mileage. It can be a little noisy at speed, but that's a minor issue. I have over 58,000 miles on it now and the dealer says the A/C compressor might need to be replaced, which is a bit concerning.

  2. Vern Purdy 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2001

I recently purchased a handicap van and drove 10 hours to get it. However, I am currently fixing some electrical issues. While I have always appreciated German engineering, I must say that Asian cars have better quality control. As an old-school person, I believe that paying $300 for a key or an igniter that replaced a $3 set of points is not progress. Perhaps I know too much about engineering, mechanics, electronics, and so on. It seems designing products without considering the cost to the client must be easy!

  3. Grant Hirthe 2025-01-25

I absolutely adore my 1993 Volkswagen EuroVan for its phenomenal interior space! It can accommodate anything from building materials to furniture to people. However, I have had to invest a lot of money into repairing it repeatedly, which has been a bit of a disappointment. I have been towed so many times that the local tow truck driver recognizes me as soon as he gets the call! Although it is now worth more in parts than as a whole, I cannot bring myself to sell it because I love it. Unfortunately, it has not been very reliable lately, and I cannot drive it because it won't stay running.

  4. Art Stoltenberg 2025-01-17

    Vehicle year: 2002

I love the power and the feeling of sitting up high. I have a few suggestions for improvement: it would be great to have a remote control that only unlocks the driver's door, instead of all doors at the same time, as this could be unsafe. Someone could jump into the other side while the driver enters the car. Additionally, it would be helpful to have automatic door locking as the vehicle starts to move. I would also appreciate a glovebox in front of the passenger seat. Lastly, I would like a flat back seat so that when it's turned into a bed, it is not so lumpy and uneven. I was a bit disappointed that my new 2002 did not come with a standard CD player, only AM/FM/cassette. As the original owner who has owned 2 other VW vans, I must say that the 1990 pop top was superb. I would love to see the 1990 set up, but with the engine in the front and the addition of safety airbags and a V-6 engine.

  5. Darrion Hoppe 2025-01-11

    Vehicle year: 2000

I purchased a Eurovan from someone because my wife is a big fan of VWs. Unfortunately, within a year of owning it, we experienced several issues such as transmission problems, stalling, and the A/C stopped working. We also had to replace the catalytic converter and dealt with other minor issues like the door locks not working. The cost of repairs for Volkswagens is quite high. Additionally, the vehicle is underpowered with only about 100 horsepower, which makes it difficult to maintain speed on hills while driving on the highway. After this experience and my wife's negative experience with her Jetta, I have decided not to purchase another VW product again.

    Vehicle year: 2002

Hi there! I wrote a review back in Nov. 2002 when the van had only 5500 miles on it. Since then, I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems whatsoever. Overall, the performance has been excellent! I did have to replace the engine after my father hit a drainage grate on a newly built section of highway and it took out the oil pan - thanks WSDOT! But the replacement engine has lower mileage and so far, so good. The fuel economy is a little less than before, but that may be due to using regular unleaded and more city driving - averaging around 16.5 - 17 mpg. I had to replace the tires at 25K, but I babied the Dunlops to get this much out of them. I keep the wheels balanced and the van aligned per schedule. Otherwise, the van has been great! Let me know if you have any questions.

It's amazing how even Volkswagen engineers can't defy the laws of physics, but I find they make reasonable compromises. If it costs a lot of money to fix, you need a better mechanic. Luckily, I know I am that better mechanic. My van has a curb weight of over 5000 lbs and gets 20 mpg, which is unheard of. Even though it doesn't have the 102 load index tires yet (they're 94), which means the side walls aren't stiff enough and there's more rolling resistance, I expect to pick up another 2 mpg from that change alone. If you don't use the stab breaking technique, the brake pads won't last long. In my opinion, the 5-speed is the only way to go. I've heard it takes 17 seconds to go from 0 to 60, but I can't get it to accelerate that slow even if I try. Hands down, you can't find a better passenger van for camping.

I hope they bring it back to the states soon! The European Weekender is perfect for weekend getaways and as a portable office while parking along the California coast on highway 1 near Big Sur. Although I bought a 2016 Mercedes Benz Metris cargo for the heavy work, it's just not as nice. I don't think I'll ever get rid of my European Weekender.

I was looking for something bigger with more room for people and cargo. I'm so glad I found this van! It's easy to drive, roomy, has great visibility, a short turning radius, and it's not your typical minivan. I test drove a lot of used vans before I decided on this one, and I couldn't be happier with my choice.
