Volkswagen Eurovan Problems and Issues
The Volkswagen Eurovan has been known to have several common problems and issues, based on complaints from owners of this car. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems:
- Power Loss and Stalls: Some Eurovan owners have reported sudden power loss and stalling while driving, especially when accelerating over 60 mph. This can be caused by a problem with the fuel pressure, and it is recommended to scan the vehicle to identify the specific issue.
- Engine Failure: Eurovan owners have reported issues with the engine, including engine mounting failure and loss of power. These issues can be caused by wear and tear, and it is recommended to replace the engine mounts and check the crankshaft sensor.
- Acceleration Failure: Some Eurovan owners have reported issues with acceleration, especially when starting the engine. This can be caused by a problem with the throttle body, pedal connections, or computer kit, and it is recommended to check these components.
- EGR Valve Failure: Eurovan owners have reported issues with the EGR valve, which can cause power loss and stalling. It is recommended to check the EGR valve and replace it if necessary.
- Steering Rack Failure: Some Eurovan owners have reported issues with the steering rack, which can cause difficulty steering and require replacement. This issue can be expensive to fix, as it often requires replacing other components as well.
- Oil Change Issues: Eurovan owners have reported issues with the engine losing power after an oil change. It is recommended to check the crankshaft sensor and other engine components to identify the specific issue.
These are some of the most common problems reported by Eurovan owners. It is important to note that these issues can be expensive to fix, and it is recommended to have the vehicle checked by a certified mechanic to identify and address any issues as soon as possible.

- Summary: THE ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE IS THAT AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE AND HEAT BUILDS UP INSIDE THE GAS TANK WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND TO EVEN A GREATER EXTENT WHEN IN STOP-N-GO TRAFFIC OR SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT IDLING. THE RESULT IS THAT WHEN OPENING THE GAS CAP FROM HOT FUMES AND FUEL SPRAY OUT AFTER RUNNING THE VEHICLE FOR LESS THAN AN HOUR. THERE ARE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS OR CHECKS IN PLACE TO WARN OR PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN! I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THE VW DEALER FOR OVER ONE YEAR NOW BUT STILL NO RESOLVE. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF VW OF AMERICA THEIR CERTIFIED MECHANICS HAVE SYSTEMATICALLY REPLACED ALMOST ALL OF THE COMPONENTS RELATING TO THE FUEL SYSTEM BUT TO NO RESOLVE. AT THIS POINT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST AND THE DEALERSHIP IS RELUCTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GAS TANK IS ACTUALLY HEATING UP EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE REPRODUCED THE RESULTS IN THEIR SHOP. I DO HAVE A VIDEO OF THE PROBLEM IN ACTION BUT AM UNABLE TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU THROUGH THE DOCUMENT UPLOADING SYSTEM. BY THE WAY I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD IT SERVICED AT THE CERTIFIED VW DEALERSHIP.

Wow, it's great to hear that you've owned 6 VW camper vans! From your experience, it seems like the 1997 model with the 6 cyl engine is finally powerful enough to move the vehicle. It's interesting to know that the engine used on Audi is the same as the one in the 1997 model. It's great to hear that you haven't had any major issues with it, except for the air conditioning which needed the compressor replaced. It's impressive that you still get 20 mpg on the highway under normal conditions. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I gave this van a 10/10 for design, although I understand that not everyone may share my opinion. This van was designed with practicality in mind, rather than faux luxury, which unfortunately led to its lack of success in the American market. My family and I purchased this van when it was 3 years old and had a considerable number of miles on it, while we were stationed overseas. Despite racking up a ton of miles, we only encountered two problems, which were not terribly expensive to fix. As expected with a Volkswagen, the issues were electrical, but they were totally manageable if you knew what you were doing. At 7 years old and almost 125,000 miles, the van had no mechanical problems whatsoever! Unfortunately, we were rear-ended and the van was totaled this weekend at a very high speed. However, the van did not collapse in toward us at all, which was truly remarkable.

Hey there! This is actually my 3rd or 4th post on the Eurovan, so I guess you could say that this is a 'real' long term review. The Eurovan is a highly sought-after vehicle for VW enthusiasts due to its low volume imported between 2001-2003 and the lack of a true replacement for the T-4 generation. As a result, these vehicles have high resale values for low mileage, well-maintained ones. In my 15 years of ownership, my Eurovan is still in great condition - the paint looks great and I've had very few problems other than the usual service. With over 96,000 miles on the van, it's now time for the shocks to be replaced as they're getting a bit 'bouncy', but not really that bad and probably could go for another 20K miles. I'll be replacing them with the Bilstein B12 sports kit which consists of the 4600 series HD shocks and lower springs that lower the back-end 40 cm. I'm also having to replace the rear and intermediate muffler (resonator) due to small holes that have appeared in the pipes, but the muffler and resonator are just fine. The two parts were about $240.00 from Bosal and were fairly easy to replace. If you're looking at buying this van, I'd recommend going for a late 2002 or 2003 model as I understand that the timing chain guides were updated around 2002 and should be more reliable. Maintenance is also very important for these vehicles, especially the transmission, so I'd try and find one with complete maintenance records if possible. The weak point on these vans is the transmission, and the service schedule calls for transmission fluid replacement every 40K miles. I've done mine twice and have had no issues - the transmission shifts very smoothly. The issue with the transmission is partly due to the transmission fluid cooler that is located on top of the engine and is more of a heat sink than a cooler (no fan, not located in an area with great ventilation). There are kits available that can be retrofitted to place a cooler in front of the radiator, which would be a great investment if you're buying a vehicle with a well-maintained transmission. Additionally, I would recommend changing the fluid every 25k miles to ensure a longer life for the transmission. By doing so, you can enjoy your vehicle for many years to come. Looking forward to writing another review in 5 years, as I have no plans to sell this vehicle.

This car is really neat and fun to drive. It's also quite unique, as you don't see many of them on the road. While the throttle can be a bit annoying with its inherent lag, it just takes a little practice to drive smoothly, especially when it's cold. On the plus side, the heated seats are an absolute joy, and the interior heating system provides way more heat and faster than any other brand out there. Parts prices are reasonable, but shop charges can be high, so it's helpful if you can do some of the rudimentary work yourself. The fit, finish, and rustproofness are outstanding, as is the visibility. The brakes are above average, and the vehicle is very comfortable and stable. Its heavy weight contributes a lot to that.

This is not the older VW camper bus! It has been greatly improved with a different engine (which is a good thing), somewhat better mileage, and is self-contained for a few adults, pets, and children. While it may not be spacious enough to walk around or cook in while on the road, the excitement of the VW begins once you reach the campsite. For the kids, it's a good idea to bring along a portable toilet, and to stay at a place that has water for showers or a lake for bathing. You'll have your own propane, but will need a small generator or electric hook-up. Portable lanterns are also handy. Most of the newer VW campers come with a trailer-hitch attachment for carrying bikes. While parts are available, it's important to note that immediate parts may take a few days to obtain when traveling. It's worth noting that the value of the vehicle will only increase over time. As an owner of three of these beasts, I can say that I have loved them all!

I absolutely adore my 1993 Volkswagen EuroVan for its phenomenal interior space! It can accommodate anything from building materials to furniture to people. However, I have had to invest a lot of money into repairing it repeatedly, which has been a bit of a disappointment. I have been towed so many times that the local tow truck driver recognizes me as soon as he gets the call! Although it is now worth more in parts than as a whole, I cannot bring myself to sell it because I love it. Unfortunately, it has not been very reliable lately, and I cannot drive it because it won't stay running.

I purchased a Eurovan from someone because my wife is a big fan of VWs. Unfortunately, within a year of owning it, we experienced several issues such as transmission problems, stalling, and the A/C stopped working. We also had to replace the catalytic converter and dealt with other minor issues like the door locks not working. The cost of repairs for Volkswagens is quite high. Additionally, the vehicle is underpowered with only about 100 horsepower, which makes it difficult to maintain speed on hills while driving on the highway. After this experience and my wife's negative experience with her Jetta, I have decided not to purchase another VW product again.

The dealership has been unable to permanently resolve the continuous electrical problems, but fortunately, I have an extended warranty. Although there are no recalls for the 1999 Eurovans, it is an excellent vehicle in terms of size and handling. I have never gotten stuck in the winter with snow tires on, even though I live in VT. However, I do wish that the two rear-facing bucket seats had safer seat belts, as there are limited seats for children still in seat belts. Repairs can be quite expensive.

This van has had several issues, including brake problems that required towing on the first day of purchase, malfunctioning air conditioning that the dealer has been unable to fix, and a malfunctioning electrical system that took a month to repair. Additionally, the windshield is loose and is not an original Volkswagen part. Based on these experiences, it may be advisable to consider other options when looking to purchase a van.

The Euro could be a great minivan for America, but unfortunately it falls short. Although it boasts VW build quality and performance, its origins as a cargo van are apparent. The dashboard is not user-friendly at all, the seats can be uncomfortable on longer trips, and the climate control system leaves much to be desired. However, despite these drawbacks, it still has the potential to be a great van.
