Toyota Corolla cross problems
The Toyota Corolla Cross (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラクロス, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra Kurosu) is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota since 2020. Adopting the Corolla nameplate, it is positioned as a more practical and larger alternative to the C-HR and built on the same TNGA-C (GA-C) platform as the E210 series Corolla. By size, the Corolla Cross is positioned between the smaller C-HR—with which it shares a platform—and the larger RAV4, in Toyota's global crossover SUV lineup.
It was first unveiled in Thailand in July 2020 along with other Southeast Asian markets and Taiwan in the same year, while its introduction in other markets started in 2021.
The twin model of the Corolla Cross, called the Toyota Frontlander (Chinese: 锋兰达; pinyin: Fēnglándá), is available exclusively in China and was introduced in late 2021.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-13
- VIN: 7MUDAAAG5NV
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I had this issue 2 times so far, and I thought I was crazy since it hasn't happened since, but I noticed another report of someone else having the exact same issue. This prompted me to include my own report, as this could be a fatal flaw that needs review immediately. While I was pulling out into traffic from a stop sign to cross multiple lanes, my engine on my 2022 Corolla Cross XLE shut off without any warning. I was stopped at the stop sign, which the engine shut off as it's designed to. Upon releasing the brake, the engine started and I accelerated to cross the lanes to get into the left turning lane. As I accelerated, the engine shut off without any intervention from my part. There were no warnings on the dash, beeps, or error messages. I pressed the accelerator multiple times without any propulsion as traffic to my left was approaching me. Thankfully they slowed down seeing me "stopped" in the middle of the road. After a few seconds of being dead in the water, the engine kicked back on and I was able to accelerate again. The same thing happened at another time that was nearly identical to this situation. I do not remember the exact date of the occurrence, but I believe it was in April of 2023 and the second occurrence was a about a month later. Since then, I have not had this exact issue happen. Although, I have pulled into traffic and had the accelerator not react quickly, which caused me to "crawl forward" at a slow speed, even if I floored the pedal. This issue has happen many times, around 8, since I purchases the car in January of 2023.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
- VIN: 7MUCAAAG6PV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: While driving in the rain with my windshield wipers on, my car suddenly stopped and the message on the car said “engine stopping, steering slowly” and after that it said “press on brakes slowly, engine stopping , steering slowly” and then it started to cut off. I forcibly put it in park and then the engine came back on and the car started to drive fine. An hour later, I turned my car back on and started driving and my screen went black. I turned the car off and turned it back on and it started working again. I think it could be an electrical issue but I don’t know for sure. I bought this car used with a little over 30k miles on it.

- Summary: On [XXX] at [XXX], my 2022 Corolla Cross popped up with the message “Engine Maintence Required Visit Your Dealer.” I sat on the phone with Toyota for an hour and a half scheduling and asking for help. I got my car in July of 2024, I only had driven my car for a MONTH when this happened. It was a certified GOLD used toyota vehicle. I went to Lia Toyota of Northampton at 9:00am for my appointment and they could not get me a diagnosis until Monday morning. I drove 100 miles across the state to Ira Toyota of Danvers to get my car looked at. I was in the waiting room for six hours waiting to hear updates— I didn’t get one until two and a half hours of waiting. They said it was a COOLANT BIPASS VALVE issue. And it was a serious one. This was a SERIOUS danger to me and my car. I had to drive 100 MILES to get it fixed. HOWEVER: to get this fixed I missed 6 HOURS of Work, totalling to 195.96 dollars in MISSED payroll. I also had to take TWO HOURS (another 65.32) to get my car fixed. I also spent half a tank of gas to get there (20 dollars). I also missed CLASS on Friday to go to and from my appointment (1.5 hours of missed classes/work). I had a LOT of emotional strain during this. I was ping ponged across the state and told very scary stuff. I am absolutely appalled by this and I want to make sure my voice is heard. - Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-07
- VIN: 7MUFBABG5PV
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: the incident has occurred three times since i have had the vehicle, two were at low speed and one was at moderate speed, the brakes initially start to work but in the final stage of braking the brake pedal gets very hard and the brakes seem not to be working for about 1-2 seconds, my natural reaction has been to hit the pedal several times and finally it ends up working. i took the vehicle to the toyota service center and they told me that the brake pads are perfect, when evidently it is not a failure of the break pads, i am not a mechanic but it is evident that the breaks pads are not the problem. Luckyly I didn't have cars in front, 2 stops sign and 1 was a yield sign. Not lights or alerts in the car dashboard.

- Date Complaint: 2024-07-15
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 7MUCAABG3PV
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I slowed down to turn into my daughter's driveway and park in front of their boat (maybe 5 mph if that). Suddenly, the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed on its own. I hit the brakes with no response. I had to veer to the left of the driveway onto the grass to avoid hitting the boat and garage. The car continued to accelerate (approximately 60-70+ mph) as I tried pumping the break pedal several times with no response (went to floor board with no resistance). I had to maneuver a narrow area at a high rate of speed to avoid hitting the house to my right and trees to my left. As I came down the hill, I approached a large embankment of a knocked over tree, dirt and brush pile. I knew I had to do something or it would be a serious impact. I quickly swerved to my right. I didn't know there was a ditch to the right of this embankment, but thankfully it brought my vehicle to a stop as my front left tire became flat and stuck in the dirt This was very shocking and traumatizing. We verified there was nothing on the floor that would have caused the gas to be accelerated. My car is currently on 3 wheels where it stopped (1 wheel suspended in the air). I received medical care at the ER for back pain. A CT scan showed I had a T12 Vertebrae compression fracture. I was prescribed a back brace, pain medication and an anti-inflammatory. I have also been alternating with a heat pad and ice pack, plus using a cane to help me get around. I will be contacting Toyota as well for an investigation into the problem, but I am scared to drive this vehicle again if if they do check it over. A police report was started on 14 Jul with the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, Oxford, MS, but it hasn't been completed. The report number is 24-003363. It wouldn't let me proceed selecting a report was filed and no report attached, so I chose no and provided report number.

- Summary: When driving in the rain and my start/stop function is turned on, my car will turn off and make a loud beep with a message stating “engine stopped steering power low”. The check engine light and the power steering light pop up on the dashboard and I have to restart the car. This has happened numerous times, but more and more frequently lately.
Toyota Corolla cross 2023
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-05-19
- VIN: 7MUDAABGXPV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My 2023 Corolla cross XLE, at least 5 times since ownership, has experienced a complete engine shut off at stop lights when driving in the rain with windshield wipers on. A message appears on the driver display saying that the engine shut off and the brake needs to be pressed hard and start button must be pushed to start the engine again. It seems to only occur in association with the engine stop/start capability that is engaged when the vehicle comes to a complete stop and the break pedal is pushed extra to engage the engine. This may sound like the normal start/stop function to save fuel, but it is not. Normally, the capability turns the engine back on upon release of the brake pedal. This issue is very different, in that the engine shut down is not normal, and requires in real time traffic, returning the vehicle to park and starting it up again before putting the gear in drive again. This is very dangerous in traffic and needs a recall fix as soon as possible.

I love my Cross! It has plenty of power for what it is. I think some people may be expecting too much power for what they're buying. The computer-simulated shifts are well-simulated compared to other CVTs out there. It also has a good ride for what we are buying. I just don't understand why people are being so hard on this compact CUV. I mean, it's a Corolla, not a Highlander!

The Corolla Cross looks and drives really nicely. It feels more solid than our previous GM SUV. We're so glad to be back in a Toyota. We've owned several Toyota vehicles and this is one of our favorites.

Vehicle year: 2023
This small SUV is one of the more affordable options available in the market. It provides a comfortable ride and easy handling. While the rear compartment is ample, leg room for rear passengers is a little less. Unfortunately, there is no rear window wash or wiper, and the windows are not tinted, which can be bothersome on sunny days. Additionally, you need to press the buttons on the key fob to open the vehicle, it doesn't automatically open if the fob is nearby. The engine is not very powerful, so it may take some time to get up to speed. If you own an Apple phone, it's easier to connect to your phone, but you will need to download apps to use the phone and radio.

I purchased a Toyota 2023 Cross four weeks ago and experienced a couple of stalls, one on the first day of use. After consulting with the dealership, I learned that the issue was related to the button in front of the shifter, specifically the circle with an A on it. Toyota is aware of this issue and I have since kept the button off to avoid any further stalls. While this has been frustrating, I still believe that the car is of good quality overall. I am hopeful that Toyota will find a solution to this issue soon.
Guillermo Wolff 2024-10-13
Vehicle year: 2023
We recently purchased the Toyota Corolla Cross XLE with the Platinum Coverage plan, mainly for my wife. During the first week, we experienced some unusual issues when going up an on-ramp. The car had trouble increasing speed and almost stalled. We thought it might be the torque converter, but there were no hard codes. Later, the problem went away. It only occurred when the car was cold (outside temperature was 40 degrees). We also had an issue with the rear door sticking when opening, but we have an appointment with Toyota to get it fixed. We have only driven about 100 miles so far. Although the inside and outside of the car are nice, there are some design flaws. For example, the platform charger is not very practical. The phone does not stay in place, and my wife's iPhone does not charge because of the camera's round protruding edge. My Android phone also would not charge. However, my home platform charger works fine, but it does not work in the Toyota Cross. Additionally, the mirror adjustment is small and deep behind the door handle, which can be difficult to reach for people with larger hands. The center console storage box is also quite small and not very useful. The auto-stop feature when at a light can be annoying, but there is a button on the console to allow the motor to keep running if needed. The legroom is also a bit tight for me, as I am 6'-1When I open the glove box, it almost hits my knees. I find the one-touch windows annoying because they automatically go down all the way every time I put them down. This is especially frustrating when it's raining and I only want to crack the window open. Unfortunately, I can't do that without getting wet. Despite the JBL speakers, the sound system needs improvement. The menu display also needs to be redesigned to make selecting items easier. I had a similar problem with my son's new Corolla XLE, which he bought just 300 miles ago. It took me an hour to perform a function link between my phone and the Corolla while traveling in his car. On the bright side, the car is good on gas, much better than my other car which is a 2.4L. There are many features on this car similar to the Volvo, but configuring everything can be annoying. On December 11, 2023, I noticed that the right rear door keeps sticking. I can feel and hear it get stuck somewhere around the trim or door lock. I also noticed some markings on the rear door latch mounted on the frame - rubbing and scratches, so it is not aligned. Additionally, the right front passenger window always seems to have moisture on it after sitting. When I run the defrost, all the windows clear up and seem dry, but the right front passenger window stays wet or damp for many hours unless I wipe it off. I am concerned about a seal leak in the door.

The car has a comfortable ride and lots of safety features. However, it may feel underpowered when accelerating on first gear.

Vehicle year: 2023
I recently purchased a Toyota Corolla Cross XLE 2022 and have noticed some areas for improvement. The acceleration could be more responsive, especially when compared to my previous Scion Tc. Additionally, I believe the dash material could be of higher quality and the console could be slightly larger. I also find it inconvenient that the window button needs to be held down to open but not to close. The lane departure feature being on the side mirrors seems unnecessary given the large screen in the vehicle. While the vehicle is not completely soundproof, it is still a reliable and enjoyable ride. Although the steering could be firmer, overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and look forward to driving it more.
Norwood Kris 2024-09-07
Vehicle year: 2023
The biggest issue I had with this vehicle was the lack of legroom. Even at just over 5'6, I found my knees starting to feel strained after a few weeks of driving. The rear passenger section is also quite tight. I remember sitting in the back for a trip and being surprised by how cramped it felt. However, I did appreciate how smoothly and safely it drove, even if it was a bit slow. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in for something roomier and faster, which I found much more satisfying.
