2001 Saab 95 problems

saab logo

The Saab 95 is a seven-seater, two-door station wagon which was produced by Saab from 1959 to 1978.

Initially it was based on the Saab 93 sedan, but the model's development throughout the years followed closely that of the Saab 96 after the 93 was taken off the market in 1960. It was introduced in 1959, but because only 40 were made in 1959, production is often said to have started in 1960.

The first engine was an 841 cc three-cylinder two-stroke, but from 1967 onward, it became available with the same four-stroke Ford Taunus V4 engine as used in the Saab 96, the Saab Sonett V4 and Sonett III, and the German Ford Taunus. It had a four-speed manual transmission. There was a small handle on the firewall that, when pushed, put the car into a "freewheeling" mode. This allowed the driver to coast downhill without seizing the two-stroke engine, but when power was needed the transmission would engage and the driver could power the car up hill again. As the 95 received the four-speed gearbox before the 96 (that still had the old three-speed unit) it was also used for rallying.

In the US, the Saab 95 received the larger 1.7 litre V4 for the 1971 model year, as a response to tighter emissions regulations. The compression ratio was lowered to 8.0:1, meaning that the power remained at 73 hp (54 kW). The Saab 95/96 remained on sale in the United States until 1973.

A rear-facing folding seat was dropped with the 1976 model year, making the car a regular five-seater. Production ended in 1978 (when only 470 examples were built). A total of 110,527 were made.

For certain markets (Norway, Denmark) a special export version sedan delivery van was available without a rear seat and rear side windows.

What year of Saab is the most reliable?

The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.

How reliable is a Saab car?

The 9-3 is one of the most reliable and cost-efficient vehicles in the market. Some of its issues can be tedious to deal with, but most of them are preventable and repairable. If you're thinking of buying the Saab 9-3, keep in mind the importance of proper maintenance and repair.

Is a Saab 95 good?

A great, reassuring, sold safe family cruiser that turns heads due to its rarity. I have a 2009 1.9 TID diesel and have been very impressed with its fuel economy, dropping to 4.7 litre/100km on a long run. Its an automatic too and drives like a luxury car, but when the turbo kicks in it has decent acceleration.

When did they stop making Saab 95?

Production of the 9-5 ended in March 2011 with Trollhättan production stopping due to the company's failing liquidity. Total production numbers of the Gen II Saab 9-5 ended at 11,280 units.

Negative 2001 Saab 95 car reviews

  1. Horace Zieme 2024-06-25

I have experienced several service problems with my car, including issues with the headlights, wipers, and turbo. While I have three more repairs pending, I am confident that these issues will be resolved. While my experience has been challenging, I believe that this car has the potential to be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle with proper maintenance and care.

  2. Lucius Corkery 2024-05-02

I leased my Saab new in Nov. 2000. Unfortunately, ever since I brought the car home, it has emitted a sulfur smell from the catalytic converter. Despite following the Saab service department's advice to change gas brand and octanes, the problem persists. The smell of sulfur is quite unpleasant and makes it difficult to even open the windows. However, I am hopeful that we can find a solution to this issue. I would appreciate it if the dealership could take a closer look at the problem and help me resolve it. Thank you for your understanding.

  3. Cortez Koss 2024-02-18

The car is definitely fun to drive, handles well and is very comfortable. It has also been very reliable, with no major problems within a year of ownership. However, I do have a couple of concerns. Like another commenter mentioned, I experienced an occasional sulfur smell from the catalytic converter. Additionally, when in closed spaces such as a parking garage, the noise from the exhaust manifold was quite loud and sounded like the muffler had fallen off. Lastly, I found that the resale value was not great. Despite these issues, I can say that overall, it was a lot better than my 96 Volvo 850.

  4. Jessie Leuschke 2024-02-13

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to reach out because I've been having some trouble with my car lately. Specifically, the sunroof has been making a lot of noise and I've had to bring it in for repairs multiple times. Additionally, there's a noise in the dash area that sounds like styrofoam rubbing together, which is really frustrating for a luxury vehicle. On top of that, the lights are changing automatically when they're not supposed to, and the tires are wearing out earlier than expected. Finally, there's a major issue with the coolant sensor that still hasn't been fixed, even after two previous repairs. As you can imagine, I'm feeling pretty frustrated with all of these issues, especially since I'm leasing the car. Do you have any suggestions for what I can do next? Thank you so much for your help!

Positive 2001 Saab 95 car reviews

  1. Luigi Bailey 2024-11-26

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2001 SE V-6 Saab! It's wonderful to hear that you haven't had any problems with it and that you've received great support from your dealer. The car sounds like it performs really well, especially with S mode on, and it's great to hear that it's comfortable to ride in and has a great stereo. With all of these nice amenities, it sounds like a fantastic purchase, although it might be best to avoid the 1999 year. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Russ Rippin 2024-11-02

This car is really fun, stylish, and incredibly comfortable. The sport mode of the 95 Saab is a real thrill when you hit the gas and is a considerable step up from the normal mode. Although the cup holders are a bit of a negative, the long list of standard features more than makes up for it. Additionally, OnStar is a nice feature to have if you're willing to pay the extra $120-$300 a year. I would recommend getting the 3-liter version because it provides more than enough power and isn't as noisy as my friend's aero version.

  3. Thaddeus Gibson 2024-09-03

People with class drive SAABs. I love mine. The salespeople are great and treat you with the respect you deserve after dropping 40 grand. Plus, BMWs are seen every day, but I've never seen a replica of my car. I like the idea of having something different. So, don't buy one!

  4. Jake Effertz 2024-08-17

Having driven the Saab 95 Aero for 27 months now, I can say that it has been an outstanding performer. It gets 26 MPG and has all the power you need in any situation on the highway and in city traffic. It is easy to park and looks very nice. We still get looks in parking lots and at the store because of the car's appearance.

  5. Jo Stokes 2024-06-24

The Saab is incredibly comfortable and drives well in all weather conditions. It's a blast to drive and always puts a smile on my face!
