The Saab 9000 is a car produced by the Swedish company Saab from 1984 to 1998. Representing the company's foray into the executive car scene, it was developed as a result of the successes of the turbocharged 99 and 900 models. The 9000 remained in production until May 1998 and it was replaced by the Saab 9-5 in late 1997, although some final cars were produced into 1998. The Saab 9000 was only available with petrol engines, in two different 5-door hatchback designs or as a 4-door notchback.

Saab designed the 9000 as part of the Type Four platform in conjunction with the Italian automaker Fiat Automobiles. Fiat retailed similar derivative versions as the more basic Fiat Croma, the luxury-themed Lancia Thema, and the sports-oriented Alfa Romeo 164. Unlike the 164, which shares only the chassis, the Croma and Thema are outwardly similar to the 9000. As such, much of the bodywork appeared interchangeable between the 9000, Croma and Thema; for example, the doors. However, because Saab fitted heavier side impact protection they will not fit. Fiat had designed the Croma with no consideration of American crash test requirements, which forced Saab to strengthen the body by fitting various reinforcements. Thus, the front of the Saab is radically different from the Italian siblings due to the much improved crash protection. Only seven parts are actually interchangeable. The 9000's body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Saab designer Björn Envall.

Despite being shorter overall than the 900 which was still produced in parallel, the 9000 has a longer wheelbase and greater interior space with 3.5 cubic metres (120 cu ft) of interior space 0.67 cubic feet (0.019 m3) in the boot, 1.6 cubic metres (57 cu ft) with rear seats folded), qualifying as an EPA-rated large car, a distinction shared only with the contemporary Rolls-Royce in America. This was achieved by installing the engine transversely to the direction of travel in the Saab 9000 (instead longitudinally as in the Saab 900). Unlike the 900 the 9000 kept the ignition switch in the more conventional steering column position rather than between the front seats. The inspiration for the seats was taken by Björn Envall from The Muppet Show's Pigs in Space, a sketch by the late puppeteer Jim Henson.

In total, 503,087 Saab 9000s were manufactured. These are divided into: 216,385 Saab 9000 CC (MY 1985–1991), 174,525 Saab 9000 CS (MY 1992–1998), 112,177 Saab 9000 CD (MY 1988–1997).

Common Saab 9000 problems

The Saab 9000 is a car model that has been praised for its unique design and performance. However, like any other car, it has its fair share of common problems. These problems are often related to the car's age and the wear and tear that comes with it.

One of the most common problems with the Saab 9000 is oil leaks from the valve cover gasket. This issue has been reported by 25 car owners. The valve cover gasket is responsible for sealing the valve cover to the engine block, preventing oil from leaking out. Over time, the gasket can wear out, causing oil to leak. This problem can be resolved by replacing the gasket.

Another common issue with the Saab 9000 is the rough idle or misfire in the engine. This problem has been reported by several car owners, particularly those with turbo models. The rough idle or misfire can be caused by various factors, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. In some cases, the problem can be resolved by replacing the faulty parts. However, in more severe cases, the engine may need to be rebuilt or replaced.

The Saab 9000's climate control system has also been reported to cause problems. Some car owners have reported issues with the heater core, which can cause the car to overheat or produce insufficient heat. In some cases, the heater core may need to be replaced. Additionally, some car owners have reported issues with the climate control unit, which can cause the air conditioning or heating to malfunction.

The car's electrical system can also cause problems in the Saab 9000. Some car owners have reported issues with the ignition switch, which can cause the car to fail to start or have difficulty starting. In some cases, the ignition switch may need to be replaced. Additionally, some car owners have reported issues with the car's electrical wiring, which can cause various electrical components to malfunction.

The Saab 9000's transmission has also been reported to cause problems. Some car owners have reported issues with the car's manual shifting linkage, which can cause difficulty shifting gears. In some cases, the linkage may need to be replaced. Additionally, some car owners have reported issues with the car's automatic transmission, which can cause the car to shift roughly or have difficulty shifting gears.

The Saab 9000's front jack point/floor rust repair has also been reported to cause problems. Some car owners have reported issues with the car's front jack point/floor rust repair, which can cause the car to have difficulty being lifted for repairs. In some cases, the rust may need to be repaired or the jack point may need to be replaced.

In conclusion, the Saab 9000 is a car model that has been praised for its unique design and performance. However, like any other car, it has its fair share of common problems. These problems are often related to the car's age and the wear and tear that comes with it. Some of the most common problems with the Saab 9000 include oil leaks from the valve cover gasket, rough idle or misfire in the engine, issues with the climate control system, problems with the car's electrical system, and issues with the car's transmission and front jack point/floor rust repair.

Latest negative Saab 9000 car reviews

  1. Maxine Kuvalis 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 1991

I bought my car with 130,000 miles on it, and now it has 150,000 miles. It's a great ride with good gas mileage (22 mpg in the city and almost 32 mpg on the highway). The turbo is a lot of fun, and the leather seats and climate control make it perfect for long trips. Although it's expensive, it's also very classy. However, it can be expensive to fix and impossible to repair in your own garage. I spent $3,500 on the car and about $8,000 on parts and labor, but it still runs. It can be hard to start when it's cold, but the turbo is easy to tune. With just a turbo boost, a K&N air filter, and high-octane (98 octane) fuel, mine has 235 torque and 205 horsepower. It beats any Civic or Integra with ease and even beat an '89 Mustang down a strip. It's a fun car for kids, but you'll need a good mechanic.

Although I have owned three Saabs, this one has been the least reliable. It has required multiple repairs, including the replacement of the heater core, head gasket, water pump, and fuel pump. Currently, it is leaking coolant all over my garage. Unfortunately, the prior owner also experienced mechanical problems while the car was still under warranty, which I only learned about after purchasing the vehicle.

  3. Darren Gottlieb 2025-01-27

    Vehicle year: 1995

Since I purchased the car, I have driven 8000 miles. I have had to replace the transmission, timing chain, and fuel pump. Unfortunately, the TCS problems are still present. Just a friendly warning to watch out for cars with TCS. On the bright side, it is the fastest four-cylinder car I have ever driven!

  5. Jerald Lebsack 2024-10-29

    Vehicle year: 1994

I purchased this car only 3 months ago and unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with it. While it runs fine most of the time, there have been some instances where the alarm has gone off while driving on the highway, the heat stopped working after I invested $800, and the power antenna has been acting up. It's been a bit frustrating and I'm considering selling it. Perhaps when it was new it was a good car, but now it seems to require a lot of maintenance.

Hey there! I just had to share with you how much I love my first car! It's a Saab that I bought for only $700, even though it had a lot of body damage. But don't let that fool you, it runs great and drives straight! I take it on routine trips that are over 200 miles with no problems at all. Living in Alaska, it handles the snow and ice like a champ! Sure, it may look like a piece of junk, but who cares when it runs so well? I drive over 20,000 miles a year and have already put 15,000 miles on it (it originally had 185,000 miles). I just can't get enough of this car!

Great power for passing on the highway. Very comfortable inside but looks sporty outside, and handles much better than your average near-luxury car.

I absolutely adore my SAAB 9000 CSE, but it does require a certain level of maintenance, much like a beautiful woman. If you're not keen on spending around $1,000 on regular trips to the garage for brake, exhaust system, SRS malfunction, headlight relay issues, etc., then this car may not be the best fit for you. However, when the car is running in top condition, I have never driven anything better. I have been in two high-impact incidents with deer, but the car is so well-built and sturdy that I was able to drive away from both. Although the repairs have exceeded the book value slightly both times, I couldn't bear the thought of parting with my 9000. The only downside is the lack of a cup holder.

The Saab 9000 CSE Turbo is truly one of the great cars ever! With a key in the console, a jet-fighter inspired interior, and plenty of power under the hood, every ride is filled with Saab excitement. While it does require a constant pedal pressure to get the greatest turbo effect, it's still a luxury ride that I miss dearly, even three cars later. Although it may not have the greatest reliability, I would still drive it today!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Saab 9000. I bought it at the end of my freshman year in college and I was a bit hesitant at first because of all the things I hear about Saab's reliability. However, I've only had to change the oil since I first bought it! The 9000 is amazing on the highway, which is where I do most of my driving between home and school. It can accelerate ridiculously fast anywhere between 20 and 90mph, and this is with a stock engine! This summer, my friends and I took the 9000 and my other friend's 2006 BMW 325xi to VA Beach, and my friend, playing around, tried to pull away from me on the interstate...but he couldn't do it! The Saab easily kept up! Needless to say, Saab has a new loyal fan! Thanks for listening.
