2005 Saab 9-2x problems

saab logo

The Saab 9-2 (sometimes referred to as Saab 9-1) was a small family car that was proposed in February 2010 to have been added to Saab's production line by 2014, under its then new ownership, Spyker Cars though some commentators considered the project a pipe dream.

The 9-2 was thought to developed in a joint venture with another automaker, probably European. Although little is known about the design, those who have seen it report it is the same teardrop shape as the 1949 to 1956 Saab 92, but also futuristic with the front similar to the new Saab 9-5. Saab Managing Director Jan-Åke Jonsson said the model would likely not be on the global GM Gamma platform.

Speculation in August 2009 suggested that the new small Saab would be based on the Saab 9-X Biohybrid concept car, which was shown at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show, and expected to compete with other premium small cars such as the Mini.

Common 2005 Saab 9-2x problems

The Saab 9-2X, also known as the "Saabaru," is a rebadged Subaru Impreza with some Saab-specific modifications. While it shares many features with the Impreza, there are some common problems that owners have reported.

  • AC Evaporator Replacement: The air conditioning (AC) evaporator is responsible for cooling the air that enters the cabin. When it fails, it can cause a lack of cool air, or even a complete failure of the AC system. Replacing the AC evaporator can be a costly repair, with an estimated cost of $695 to $767.
  • Fuel Level Sending Unit Replacement: The fuel level sending unit is responsible for measuring the amount of fuel in the tank and sending that information to the fuel gauge. When it fails, it can cause inaccurate readings on the fuel gauge, or even a complete failure of the fuel gauge. Replacing the fuel level sending unit can be a costly repair, with an estimated cost of $1,127 to $1,176.
  • Drive Axle Assembly Leak Inspection: The drive axle assembly is responsible for transferring power from the transmission to the wheels. When it leaks, it can cause a loss of power, or even a complete failure of the drivetrain. A leak inspection can help identify the source of the leak and determine the best course of action for repair. This inspection typically costs between $55 and $69.
  • Electrical System Diagnosis: The electrical system is responsible for powering all of the electronic components in the car. When it fails, it can cause a wide range of issues, from minor annoyances to major safety concerns. A diagnostic can help identify the source of the problem and determine the best course of action for repair. This diagnostic typically costs between $110 and $139.
  • Seat Heater Switch Replacement: The seat heater switch is responsible for controlling the seat heaters. When it fails, it can cause the seat heaters to stop working. Replacing the seat heater switch can be a simple and cost-effective repair, with an estimated cost of $104 to $116.
  • Catalytic Converter Replacement: The catalytic converter is responsible for reducing harmful emissions from the exhaust. When it fails, it can cause a decrease in fuel efficiency, an increase in emissions, or even a complete failure of the exhaust system. Replacing the catalytic converter can be a costly repair, with an estimated cost of $2,948 to $2,983.
  • Wheel Replacement: The wheels are responsible for supporting the weight of the car and providing traction on the road. When they become damaged or worn, they can cause a decrease in safety and performance. Replacing the wheels can be a simple and cost-effective repair, with an estimated cost of $479 to $493.
  • Tie Rod Replacement: The tie rods are responsible for connecting the steering system to the wheels. When they become worn or damaged, they can cause a decrease in steering performance and safety. Replacing the tie rods can be a simple and cost-effective repair, with an estimated cost of $168 to $205.
  • Rear End Whine at 60 mph: Some owners have reported a rear end whine at 60 mph, which can be irritating and concerning. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn gears, low gear oil, or a damaged differential. It is important to have this problem diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

In summary, the Saab 9-2X has some common problems that owners have reported, including leaking CV boots, AC evaporator failure, fuel level sending unit failure, drive axle assembly leaks, electrical system issues, seat heater switch failure, catalytic converter failure, wheel damage, tie rod wear, and a rear end whine at 60 mph. These problems can be costly to repair, but many of them can be prevented with regular maintenance and inspections.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-10-05
  • VIN: JF4GG22665G
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE FOUR BOLTS THAT THE REAR SEATS ATTACH TO HOLD MOISTURE WHICH THEN INFILTRATES THE STRUT TOWERS AND CAUSES THEM TO ROT OUT. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS YOU CAN BE DRIVING AND WITHOUT NOTICE, A WHEEL WILL DISCONNECT FROM THE BODY OF THE CAR AND IMMEDIATELY BECOME A HAZARD THAT FORCES YOU TO WRECK THE CAR SINCE THE WHEEL IS NO LONGER ATTACHED. EVERY SAAB 9-2X HAS THIS ISSUE AND EVERY OWNER EITHER PARTS THE CAR OUT OR HAS TO HAVE IT REPAIRED WHICH I RECENTLY DID TO THE TUNE OF $1,075. JUST TO KEEP THE CAR SAFE TO DRIVE. THE FIX REQUIRES THE RUSTED AREA TO BE CUT OUT AND THEN NEW METAL WELDED IN SO IT CAN REGAIN STRUCTURAL RIGIDITY.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-15
  • VIN: JF4GG22645H
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: MY STRUT TOWERS HAVE BEGUN TO RUST, AND IF I DON'T REPAIR AND WELD IT SOON, MY REAR STRUTS MIGHT RIP THROUGH THE TOWERS. THE REAR STRUT TOWERS OF SAAB 92X RUST OUT OVER TIME DUE TO MOISTURE GETTING THROUGH THE TOWERS AND GETTING TRAPPED UNDER SOUND DEADENING MATERIAL. THIS CAUSES VIRTUALLY EVERY NON-FAIRWEATHER 92X TO UNDERGO A RUSTED STRUT TOWER ON THE FRAME. THIS IS SUCH A PROBLEM, THE FIRST RECOMMENDED STEP WHEN BUYING USED IS TO CHECK THESE FRAMES AS THE REAR STRUTS CAN RIP THROUGH WHEN THEY ARE RUSTED AND CAUSE A POTENTIALLY FATAL ACCIDENT. THE ONLY PROPER FIX IS WELDING.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-01
  • VIN: JF4GG226X5G
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: IT IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH 2005-2006 SAAB 9-2X'S, SUBARU WRX'S THAT THE REAR STRUT TOWERS ARE PRONE TO RUST THROUGH AND CAUSE A REAR STRUT TO COMPLETELY BREAK FREE FROM THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A GENERAL MOTORS/SUBARU ISSUE, SINCE THE 9-2X IS ALL SUBARU PARTS WITH SAAB BADGING.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-09
  • VIN: JF4GG61685G
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: VEHICLE WAS BACKING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY WHEN RIGHT-FRONT SUSPENSION COLLAPSED. VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER DRIVE-ABLE AS ENTIRE WHEEL ASSEMBLY WAS LOOSE AND RUBBING AGAINST CAR BODY. LUCKILY, CAR WAS ONLY MOVING AT LOW SPEED AT THAT MOMENT AND WAS STOPPED WITHOUT INJURY TO DRIVER OR DAMAGE TO OTHER CARS OR PROPERTY. CAR HAD TO BE TOWED (TAKEN TO NEAREST CHEVROLET DEALER). CHEVY SERVICE DEPARTMENT ASSESSED ISSUE, STATING THAT RIGHT FRONT CONTROL ARM CORRODED AND BROKE. OTHER SUSPENSION COMPONENTS WERE DAMAGED, AS WELL, AS A RESULT OF CONTROL ARM COLLAPSE. CAR WAS SUBJECT TO SAAB RECALL NO. 15031 (11281). THIS IS ALSO NHTSA RECALL NO. 11V-464, DATED APRIL 2012. RECALL CONCERNS CORROSION OF CONTROL ARMS. THIS VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR THE RECALL IN SEPTEMBER 2012, WITH CONTROL ARMS BEING INSPECTED AND UNDER-COATED. (SERVICE RECEIPT AVAILABLE IF NEEDED FOR INVESTIGATION.) CHEVY AND SAAB WOULD NOT PROVIDE REPAIR REIMBURSEMENT AS RECALL WAS OFFICIALLY CLOSED OUT. CONCERN IS THAT MANY SAAB AND SUBARU CARS ARE STILL ON THE ROAD WITH POTENTIAL FOR A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE.

  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL I RECEIVED A NOTICE IN THE MAIL RECENTLY FROM GM THAT SAID I NEEDED TO MAKE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT TO GET THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR REPLACED. IT SAID TO GO TO MY.GM.COM/RECALLS AND ENTER MY VIN. I DID THAT AND IT SHOWED TWO RECALLS: ONE FOR THE AIRBAG AND AN OLDER RECALL FOR THE CONTROL ARMS. I CALLED OURISMAN GMC IN ALEXANDRIA (HTTP://WWW.CHEVROLETOFALEXANDRIA.COM/) AND SPOKE WITH VON, WHO SAID HE WAS A SERVICE MANAGER. HE SAID THAT I DID NOT HAVE ANY OUTSTANDING RECALLS. I TOLD HIM I HAD GOTTEN A CARD AND THAT MY.GM.COM/RECALLS SAID I HAD A RECALL. HE SAID THAT THE FIX HAD NOT BEEN FIGURED OUT AND THAT'S WHY I WAS NOT SHOWING UP IN THEIR DATABASE. THIS IS NONSENSE - OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME CAR HAVE HAD THIS FIX DONE. HE REFUSED TO LOOK IN MY.GM.COM/RECALLS AND KEPT REPEATING THAT HE COULD ONLY USE HIS SYSTEM. I THEN CALLED ROUTE 1 BUICK GMC (HTTP://WWW.ROUTE1BUICKGMC.COM/) AND SPOKE WITH A SERVICE PERSON NAMED DIANA. SHE GAVE ME THE SAME STORY BUT WAS AT LEAST MORE POLITE ABOUT IT. THIS RECALL HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING FOR 18 MONTHS AND THE SUSPENSION RECALL HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING FOR FIVE YEARS. THEY HAVE REFUSED TO HELP ME. I COULD GET INTO AN ACCIDENT TOMORROW AND BE KILLED BY MY CAR'S AIRBAG. NEITHER PERSON WAS INTERESTED IN RESEARCHING OR ATTEMPTING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THERE WAS A MISMATCH. THIS IS NOTHING SHORT OF NEGLIGENCE. I GOT A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL AND IT IS ALSO REFLECTED ON SAFERCAR.GOV.

Negative 2005 Saab 9-2x car reviews

I recently purchased a 9-2x using GM's employee discount, hoping to get a great deal. Unfortunately, my experience has been less than pleasant. After only 3 weeks of ownership, I noticed flat spots on the tires and scratches all over the car from sitting on the lot for a year. Despite my attempts to reach out to the selling dealer, I have not received any assistance. I want to warn potential buyers to inspect the vehicle before purchasing to avoid similar issues.

I'm thrilled to say that I managed to save $8500 off the MSRP, which is fantastic news! I paid less than my friend did for their WRX. While I don't think it's any quieter, I have noticed that it can be a bit jarring on rough pavement, especially with the 17

Positive 2005 Saab 9-2x car reviews

I've been driving my Saab 9-2X for about 3 and a half months now, and I'm really happy with my choice. It's a great combination of European style and Japanese AWD technology. I appreciate both its practicality and its sporty feel. Plus, I feel safe and secure with all the safety features, including side curtain and front airbags, ABS and 4-wheel disc brakes, AWD for slippery roads, and Xenon driving lamps. The cargo capacity is also a big plus, especially with the versatile split fold-down rear seats. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone whose needs match up with what it has to offer.

This 5-door Saab/Suub/Saabaru (pick your poison) is a great upgrade from the Impreza WRX wagon. It has more precise and comfortable handling, better body design, increased noise reduction, and overall better good looks that differentiate it greatly from the Subaru. Although it may be a bit pricey, it's definitely worth every penny. If you feel like the performance isn't quite up to snuff, you can always add aftermarket power toys to blow away the competition! I personally love this car, and I've owned and test-driven several 5-doors. In my opinion, this is by far the best of the bunch! Unfortunately, the '05s are practically sold out, but you can always buy an '06--you won't regret it!

Who else is in the mood for a Subaru dish with Saab spices? I definitely was, and let me tell you, it was delicious! The 9-2x Aero is the perfect combination of practicality and excitement. It's a wagon that's great for carrying small to medium-sized dogs or camping gear, and it has a turbo engine that will put a silly grin on your face that you just can't wipe off. Plus, it's all-wheel-drive with ABS and a limited slip differential, so you can feel safe and secure on the road. The turbo has been refined, so you won't necessarily take off like a Tasmanian devil at 3000RPM. The shifter is a bit notchy and could be improved, but the seats are decent and the two-tone interior is really nice. The road noise is acceptable, but a bit more than what I experienced with the Jetta I owned. Overall, this car is practical and fun, and I highly recommend it!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with you. I was able to purchase a $28K car for only $20,600 thanks to some great incentives. I opted for every option except the automatic and I must say, it's a really fun car to drive! The only downsides were a minor paint flaw and the interior feeling a bit cheap, but overall I'm really happy with my purchase. Just a friendly tip, I wouldn't recommend getting black paint. Thanks for listening!

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your wagon! While it may suffer from turbo lag and have average fuel economy, it's still an excellent value, especially with current GM rebates and other discounts. In my humble opinion, it not only looks better than the WRX, but it's also an overall better car. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
