Rivian R1t 2023 problems

rivian logo

The Rivian R1T is a battery electric mid-size light duty luxury pickup truck produced by the American company Rivian. The first production R1T was manufactured in Illinois on September 28th 2021, and was delivered to a customer. The official EPA range for the Rivian R1T (MY 2022–2023) ranges from 289–352 mi (465–566 km), depending on drivetrain, battery pack capacity and wheel size.

History

Rivian unveiled the upcoming truck under the working name A1T in May 2018 but rebadged the vehicle in November 2018 as the R1T. Designed to be off-road capable, the 2018 concept design was planned to have 14 in (360 mm) of ground clearance, feature an 800 hp (600 kW) electric motor, with the most expensive models being designed to achieve approximately 450 miles (720 km) on a charge. The company claimed that early prototype testing showed the truck to be able to accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in under 3.3 seconds, wade through 3 ft 7 in (1.1 m) of water and climb a 45 degree incline. These design objectives were largely achieved in the 2021 production vehicle release. Rivian said it was designing the vehicles to facilitate "car-sharing" with their autonomous features.

In 2018, Rivian stated it intended to license its electric chassis to other manufacturers as a design base for machinery such as cars and other components. As of 2018, Rivian stated it planned to begin production of the R1T in 2020.

In September 2021, the first customer vehicle rolled off the production line and was delivered to a customer. Rivian began delivering the first R1T trucks to customers in October 2021.

Common Rivian R1t 2023 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Rivian R1T 2023, several common problems have been reported:

  • Reliability Concerns: Despite positive performance in tests, reliability has been a major issue for some owners. Reports include instances of the vehicle becoming inoperable shortly after delivery, with one owner mentioning their R1T being 'bricked' three weeks after purchase.
  • Noise Problems: Owners have reported various noises coming from the vehicle during operation, which can be disruptive and concerning. These noises, such as clinks and clunks, have been noted to occur frequently, especially at lower speeds, impacting the overall driving experience.
  • Maintenance Challenges: Some owners have highlighted challenges with maintenance, particularly related to the availability of service centers and the time it takes to address issues. Limited service locations and long wait times for appointments have been mentioned as significant drawbacks.
  • Technology Glitches: Issues with technology features like the Bluetooth camp speaker getting stuck in its dock have been reported. While these may not affect the drivability of the vehicle, they contribute to a less than ideal ownership experience and may require attention from the service center.

These problems reflect a range of concerns voiced by Rivian R1T 2023 owners, encompassing issues related to customer service, reliability, noise disturbances, maintenance challenges, and technology glitches. Addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing the overall ownership experience and ensuring customer satisfaction.

What is the problem with the Rivian in 2023?

Reduced visibility of the reverse lights increases the risk of a crash. Summary: Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022-2023 R1S vehicles. The reverse light beam may not be visible from certain angles.

Why is Rivian struggling?

Rivian lost tens of thousands of dollars per vehicle last year as it struggled to ramp up production and generate demand beyond its exuberant first wave of buyers. Rivian shares have lost 53% so far this year, hurt by disappointing deliveries and its projection in February that production growth in 2024 would be flat.

Is Rivian going to survive?

J.P. Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman said last month he expects Rivian to lose $7.6 billion in cash before generating positive cash flow in 2027. He added that "another capital raise (on far from certain terms)" will likely be needed by 2026.

Is Rivian a reliable company?

Electric vehicle maker Rivian was listed among Consumer Reports' (CR) worst car brands for 2024. This was despite the Rivian R1T pickup truck and Rivian R1S SUV performing well in the organization's tests. Overall, Rivian received an overall score of 55 from Consumer Reports, the fifth lowest overall.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA5PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The passenger side airbag notification shows that the airbag is disabled when a passenger is seated in the seat and the car is moving. This happens very frequently when driving at various speed. If the passenger is not seated exactly at 90 degrees deeply in the seat in a perfect position, the airbag will be disabled. The sensitivity of the airbag sensor is very concerning. No one will sit straight position perfectly in a car, especially on longer rides and this is very scary to put the passenger at risk. The vehicle has been brought up for service for this particular issue and there has been no resolutions as it is deem "per the specs" by the service center. The problem has been reproduced by them, but again it was not repaired or fixed since it is diagnosed as normal operation.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-16
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA2PN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Rivian R1T. The contact stated while driving at approximately 70 MPH with the cruise control activated while overtaking another vehicle, the vehicle independently activated the brake. The contact had not turned off the cruise control and there were no other vehicles nearby. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that when the other vehicle had passed the contact’s vehicle, the brakes disengaged, and the cruise control resumed and accelerated the vehicle back to the pre-set cruising speed. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but had become a recurring failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to a service center; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that when the vehicle fully charged the battery, the indicator showed that the vehicle was at 100 percent charge with a range of 369 miles. The contact was only able to drive a range of 260 miles on a full charged battery before needing to recharge the battery. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-05
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA1PN
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The components that failed are Traction Control, Stability controls, and Anti-Lock Braking while in high regeneration mode. Vehicle can easily become incontrollable in low traction situations (in high regeneration mode) that is a danger to the driver and others on the road. Sequence of Events 1.Vehicle begins to Aquaplane 2.Driver (myself) removes foot from the accelerator pedal (standard technique to regain control) 3.The tires in the front loose more traction and skid due to high regeneration mode. 4.With even less traction the vehicle is out of control In the moment, my first concern and priority was other drivers. I was able avoid six lanes of traffic in the direction of travel without hitting another vehicle before hitting the should barrier. The vehicle felt like there was no ABS (Antilock Braking System) and no traction control. It felt like the vehicle locked all four wheels (like I had placed the vehicle in park). In addition, I had a service scheduled at the end of May 2024 (scheduled in January 2024) for issues with the rain sensor(s). I do not know if these sensor(s) comes into play. It is my belief that there should be a safety warning when using High Regeneration mode and the vehicle should automatically switch back to Low Regeneration mode with each new startup. I have noticed this feature in other electric cars (Audi/BMW) and have begun to understand why these vehicles perform this function. In addition, I have searched the Forum website and have discovered others that have experienced the same issue related to traction in this mode.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA7PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Concern: - Passenger seat not detecting person sitting in it. Airbag not arming. Cause: - The Occupant Classification System (OCS) uses a pressure sensor in the seat bottom to classify whatever is in the front passenger's seat. An improperly seated occupant can "trick" the OCS into possibly classifying the occupant incorrectly. Being improperly seated can include improper use of child restraints, improper posture such as leg placement, reclining the seatback too far back, weight of the passenger that is too close to threshold values (movement might effect the narrow weight distribution, gray zone), and using aftermarket cushions and coverings on the seat. If the occupant is a child in a properly secured child-restraint, or if there is no occupant in the seat, the "Passenger Airbag OFF" telltale is expected to be illuminated. For adults, the "Passenger Airbag ON" telltale should be illuminated at vehicle startup. At this time, the occupant protection sensors and modules are functioning as designed.

SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAA9PN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Car was lane corrected into other lane and started accelerating. Like getting hit by a bumper in a pinball machine. Avoided a head on collision but managed to safety maneuver into a fence instead of a tree.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-23
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAAXPN
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
  • Summary: While driving with a passenger in the front seat, I noticed the passenger airbag was not enabled. Seems the passenger is not detected. Sometime having the passenger moving around or adjusting the seat/seatbelt would fix the issue and the airbag will enable. Randomly occurs and randomly fixes. Once it is enabled it seems to stay enabled for the remainder of the drive.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-03
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA2PN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The vehicle was parked on a 8 degree slope in the driveway with approximately 2 inches of snow on the drive way. Within thirty minutes of the vehicle being parked the truck slide down the driveway and crashed into the house. The parking brake failed and or is miss-engineered seeing that only two of the wheels were locked and two rolled noting the tire tracks in the snow. The saftey of myself and others could have been much worse if the truck hadn't hit the house and kept rolling down the hill into an adjacent street or house. There is other vehicle reports of this happening on online forums. The vehicle component has not been inspected by the manufacturer. The issue lies with it being an electrical motor and does not have a differential to lock the remaining tires as in an automatic gas powered vehicle. This company has relied on the parking break to only lock the rear wheels for the parking break despite it being an extremely heavy vehicle.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-22
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAA7PN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Was driving on the highway in the left lane at roughly 80 mph and suddenly lost regenerative braking and almost got into an accident not realizing I had to use my physical brakes to slow down. Truck entered turtle mode and was able to make it safely over and back home. Problem got worse with rattling coming from the front compartment. Front half shaft was discovered to be detached and this will be the third this half shaft has been repaired. Video of the loose half shaft is available.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-29
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAA1PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Front Passenger airbag sensor does not recognize when a passenger is sitting in the seat. Airbag sensor turns off and on while driving depending on how passenger sits. If passenger shifts slightly forward the airbag sensor no longer detects them. I have never seen an issue like this in any other vehicle.
2023-12-27

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-27
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA9PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The front passenger airbag sensor goes on and off when my passenger sits in the front seat. My passenger is 133 pounds and sometimes it triggers the "disabled" airbag icon and sometimes it doens't. It's very inconsistent and I fear that if it is in the disabled position at the time of an accident the airbags will not deploy. The vehicle has not been inspected by a licensed professional, manufacturer or police.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-27
  • VIN: 7FCTGAALXPN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Hello, I have a concern about the passenger side airbag in my 2023 Rivian R1T pickup truck. My wife is very small (weighs about 110 lbs., 5'2" tall). I've noticed on several occasions that when she's sitting in the passenger seat the airbag sensor will turn off because it's not detecting her sitting there. This happens more often if she crosses her legs or reclines the seat too much. As if she's not putting enough weight directly on the seat airbag sensor. I understand this is a common complaint and have seen many threads about it in the online forums and on Reddit. I spoke with the Rivian Service Center in Gaithersburg, MD, on Nov. 1 and was told it is "within spec". However it is my opinion that they should look into the weight threshold on the seat and ensure that it stays on when people are sitting there. Perhaps by tying it into the seatbelt buckle sensor? I am entering this complaint in hopes of drawing more attention to the issue so that Rivian might look into it. Thank you.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-24
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA7PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The Rivian R1T's passenger airbag does not engage if you weigh less than a certain amount. I am 5'2" and 120 pounds, and the airbag is "off" if I sit in the passenger seat. Some Rivian dealers say it is set at 135 pounds; one dealer said it is set at 150 pounds. When we complain to Rivian, they say the car is "functioning as designed," but will not tell us what those design parameters are. I cannot ride in my own car.
2023-12-22

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-21
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAA0PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: When there's a passenger sitting in the passenger seat, the car consistently fails to detect the passenger and the "AIRBAGS OFF" indicator remains on. I've brought the car in for service and Rivian says it's acting in normal parameters.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAAXPN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Front passenger airbag sometimes fails to activate when my friend, weighing 120 pounds, is sitting in the front passenger seat.
2023-12-16

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAL6PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: I've witnessed on multiple occasions where the 'Passenger Air Bag Off' warning comes on while my 120-125lb husband is sitting in the seat. If he shifts his seating position it comes back on, but it doesn't seem appropriate that the air bag would disable mid-drive while his seat belt had been buckled and door closed the entire time. If it detected him at the start of the drive, it should remain on for the duration of the drive. I reported this in a service ticket to the manufacturer, but was told it is working as designed.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-08
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA6PN
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: There is no defrost mechanism for the headlights. Because they are LED lamps and cool to the tuch, they are prone to snow buildup and greatly reduced visibility.
2023-11-14

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-13
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAL4PN
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Rivian issued an OTA update, 2023.42.0, that rendered all but the most basic functions disabled. There is no center screen. No ability to control defrost or climate in the vehicle. All advanced safety features, other than blind spot warnings, appear disabled.
2023-11-03

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-18
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAA7PN
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: High Voltage battery failed twice. At highway speeds and during failure vehicle resorts to turtle mode.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-10
  • VIN: 7FCTGBAA6PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The passenger airbag is not engaged for anyone under 150lbs, which includes my wife, 16 year old daughter, 14 year old son and 13 year old daughter. Seems a dangerous setting to have such a high weight threshhold for Rivian and they keep responding to owners that all is functioning normal.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAA7PN
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The passenger airbag sensor is malfunctioning. When a passenger weighing 115 pounds is seated in the front passenger seat with the seatbelt connected, the vehicle disables the airbag. This has been documented with pictures and video multiple times to Rivian. They had the vehicle at their service center recently and informed me that the sensor was working properly. I implored them to road test it with an passenger of similar weight. I did not receive confirmation if they road tested the vehicle and it was returned to me with the same problem. I have since spoken with a manager by the name of Luis Nieves who promised to look into the issue. I have repeatedly tried to contact Mr. Nieves to no avail. Calls and messages to the service center have also not been responded to. I am driving a vehicle that is unsafe for passengers, and based on the forums I read, I don't think that I'm alone with this issue. You are welcome to inspect my vehicle, and I can provide pictures and video examples. This puts my passenger (weighing 115lbs) at risk every time we drive the vehicle. The dealer told me that they could not replicate the problem. I have no reason to believe that they road tested it as suggested.
2023-04-30

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-30
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAA7PN
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Car with less than 300 miles on it. On inspection of the underbody, a significant leak on passenger front side with grease in a centrifugal pattern. Appears that CV joint/boot is failing which is concerning on a brand new car for potential failure.
2023-04-20

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
  • VIN: 7FCTGAAAXPN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I picked up this vehicle brand new from a Rivian service center. On the way home after approximately 90 miles, the screens lit up with a message saying Critical Battery Issue: Service Vehicle Immediately. In addition to the warnings on the console, there was a very loud beeping sound that did not stop. My understanding of the issue from speaking to Service and reading forums is that there is a software issue interacting with the battery which can cause this issue and eventually the vehicle to brick. It could cause a safety issue because in my case, it happened out of nowhere and forced me to pull over to the side of the road to protect myself and my family and the vehicle. In attempts to tow it to the service center, we also discovered that it was not possible to place the car in neutral which made it difficult to place on the tow truck. Had the car shut down entirely, I am not sure what the option would have been. To the best of my knowledge, Service has not officially diagnosed or determined the issue with my vehicle. Some of the information I have provided comes from research in online forums where others were encountering this problem at least back in 2022. It concerns me that there is still an issue especially as this was a brand new car and this manufacturer is attempting to ramp up production. It seems plausible there could be many more cars on the road soon and many/all contain this issue. There were no indications whatsoever before the message and noise began and I was driving down the highway at a normal and constant rate of speed.

Positive Rivian R1t 2023 car reviews

  1. Cecil Swaniawski 2024-10-03

Puts the “FUN” back into driving while still being a truck!

  2. Saul Haley 2024-05-26

This truck can do everything you need and more! The only downside is that the service is 4 hours away, but they are always on point. They provide a loaner and go above and beyond to ensure your satisfaction.

  3. Arch Gleichner 2024-03-23

I waited 2 years for my Max Pack Adventure R1T. The performance Dual-Motor is plenty quick in Sport Mode and in All-Purpose Mode, it’s smooth, comfortable and quiet. Much more comfortable than my prior 3 Teslas. The max range with my 22” wheels is 390 miles. I haven’t put it through its paces yet (towing, hauling, or off road), but I’m really enjoying it as a daily driver.

  4. Emory Cummings 2024-01-14

Got R1T a year ago. It's great to drive! It's fast, smooth, and handles precisely. I'm happy to report that a few quirks have been handled by software updates. I love rolling past the gas stations and not even looking at the prices. I just pull into my garage and plug it in. (Operating cost is about 1/3 the cost of gas.)

  5. Mario Konopelski 2024-01-09

You've driven 900 miles so far and it sounds like you're really enjoying your vehicle! It's fast and solid, although you've noticed a bit more wind noise than other vehicles. Overall, you're really impressed with it!
