Common Porsche Panamera problems

The Porsche Panamera, a luxury car known for its high performance, has had some common problems, particularly in its earlier models. Here are some of the issues that have been reported:

  • Coolant Leaks: Some owners have reported coolant leaks, which can cause the engine to overheat if not addressed. Coolant leaks can be caused by a variety of issues, including damaged hoses, a faulty radiator, or a cracked engine block.
  • Transmission Issues: The first-generation Panamera could experience transmission problems, such as rough shifting. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out clutch plates, a faulty transmission control module, or low transmission fluid levels.
  • Electronic Malfunctions: Issues with electronic systems, including PCM, navigation, and entertainment features, have been a cause for concern. These problems can be caused by various factors, including software glitches, faulty sensors, or damaged wiring.
  • PCM (Porsche Communication Management) Issues: Many Panamera owners have reported issues with the PCM system, particularly PCM3.1, which seems to be the main offender. These problems can include the unit restarting every 2-3 minutes, map not loading, loading in the wrong language, turning on and off randomly, or not functioning at all.

While these problems have been reported, it's worth noting that many of them have been rectified in the later models, and they are often considered minor compared to the overall performance and luxury offered by the vehicle. Like any premium vehicle, the Porsche Panamera requires an investment in care to maintain its peak performance and reliability. Regular maintenance and careful selection of the model year can ensure a satisfying and reliable ownership experience.

Porsche Panamera

Are Porsche Panamera reliable cars?

Porsche Panamera's engineering and design adhere to the high standards associated with the Porsche brand, and this is reflected in its longevity. On average, a well-maintained Porsche Panamera has a life expectancy of about 141,000 miles according to Vehicle Score.

Is a Porsche Panamera expensive to maintain?

Yes, Porsches are expensive to maintain compared to most automakers' vehicles. Estimates from RepairPal show maintaining a Porsche costs an average of about 83% more than the industry average.

What's the best year for a Porsche Panamera?

While not part of the second-generation lineup, the 2014 Panamera is often cited as one of the most reliable years due to its solid build quality and durable components. The 2014 Porsche Panamera is a luxury sports sedan that combines exquisite design, powerful performance, and advanced technology.

What is the life expectancy of a Porsche Panamera?

A standard Porsche Panamera should last around 150,000 miles, which is an excellent lifespan for a luxury vehicle. Thus, we would place the high mileage point at anything above 100,000 miles. Once the car reaches this point, there is a high chance any serious repairs will cost far more than the vehicle is worth.

Although a major and critical component of the engine and propulsion, the fuel pump seized, exploded and shredded itself and the camshaft at the connected point sending shards of metal chunks and pieces into the engine causing catastrophic engine failure. The engine immediately went into limp mode on the highway at no less than 70 miles per hour while passing an 18 wheeler which, was a major safety issue and could have caused a crash causing serious bodily injury or death as a result. According to my research, this is a known problem. Porsche was contacted and ignored the complaint. The engine had to be completely replaced.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WP0AD2A74GL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The contact owned a 2016 Porsche Panamera. The contact stated that while driving at 2 MPH and while the contact attempted to make a right turn when the brake pedal was depressed, the brakes failed to engage inadvertently. The steering column also became inoperable. The vehicle would not stop and the steering column would not turn, which resulted in an accident. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and a police report was filed; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was declared a total loss by the Allstate Insurance Adjuster. The contact stated that he had previously experienced brake failure while driving the vehicle and had taken the vehicle to the dealer for servicing, but the dealer could not diagnose the failure at either visit. Porsche Panamera 2023
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-26
  • VIN: WP0CH2A75PL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: A message appeared on the dashboard indicating a "Critical Electrical Failure" and "Park Safely" when I turned the key to start the car. This car is a plug-in e-hybrid (my 3rd of this model) and I always assumed that in case of a major failure, I could either use the engine or the electric propulsion system. This was not the case. Although the instruments had power the transmission could not be moved from park and the steering was inoperative. The vehicle was totally immobilized. And the advice to "Park Safely" is ridiculous because there was no way to move the vehicle. Fortunately I was parked when this occurred. But if I was at a traffic light or this happened while I was underway, the safety implications are frightening. The vehicle would have been an immovable obstacle on the roadway. Plus there is not any kind of emergency "neutral" release so the vehicle could at least be pushed. The flatbed tow truck sent by Porsche Connect had to drag the vehicle on to its bed. And if I had not been in a nose in space as I was, even towing would have been nearly impossible.
Porsche Panamera 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-03

The “Hybrid System Failure - Park Safely” message was displayed. The contact maneuvered the vehicle off to the shoulder of the highway. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the diagnostic test showed that the high voltage battery had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure; and the manufacturer provided the contact a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

Latest negative Porsche Panamera car reviews

  1. John Mueller 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 2016

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I purchased brand new from the dealer almost two years ago. It's a beautiful car with amazing features like blacked tail light covers, 360 camera views, and 20 inch wheels. However, about a year ago, I encountered a transmission error while starting the car to go to work. Although the warning said the car was driveable, I immediately called the service department. I noticed that the car wouldn't go into 3, 5, or 7th gear, so I had to limp to the dealership for service. After two days, I got it back and was told it was a software and transfer case issue. All seemed well until last week when the same scenario happened again. I called the dealer, limped to the dealership, got in my loaner, and left. This time, I received a call that they had to replace the entire transmission! I was upset because my car has only 27k miles and I'm the original owner who has always had it serviced by the dealer. I've owned various luxury Marques like Mercedes, Jaguar, and Lexus, and not one of them needed a new transmission. I even had a 2002 S Class that I owned for 9 years and put over 180k miles on it, and the biggest expense I had was replacing the front end suspension due to normal wear and tear. I'm now reassessing my intent on keeping this car. I'm curious, how does Porsche get away with being called the most reliable and well-built luxury car when their famous PDK transmission failed twice in less than 30k miles? I'm even considering having a conversation with my lawyer at this point.

  2. Marques Cummings 2025-02-07

    Vehicle year: 2023

I've owned this car for 9 months and driven 14K miles. While the handling and performance are superb, there have been some issues with the transmission not being able to decide on a gear, and sometimes even reverse gear is unavailable. The electronics have been a bit of a challenge, with warning lights constantly appearing and disappearing like a Christmas tree. The soft touch doors have failed intermittently, and there have been issues with the cruise control and alarm. Additionally, the engine has lost drive when turning and crossing traffic, which could be dangerous. Traction control has also been a bit finicky. Unfortunately, I've had to take the car to the shop 4 times, totaling 18 days without the car. If you're considering buying this car, I would recommend reconsidering as there are other good-looking cars out there that actually work. Personally, I am pursuing this vehicle as a Lemon. Thank you for your understanding.

  4. Keyshawn Little 2025-02-02

    Vehicle year: 2015

When I first saw the Porsche Panamera, I was drawn to its unique style and rarity on the road. However, after owning it for less than a year, I began to experience some issues. The transmission can be quite noticeable when switching gears during acceleration and braking, which is not as smooth as the Mercedes-Benz and BMWs I've owned in the past. Additionally, like the Volkswagens I owned in my youth, this car has some electronic issues. For example, the climate control settings change on their own about once a month, and the radio occasionally requires a restart. Despite these issues, the car is quite spacious inside. It's worth noting that some minor things have broken over the years, such as the horn, driver's window switch trim, and passenger window switch, but overall, it's still a great car.

  5. Elian Gibson 2025-01-25

    Vehicle year: 2018

Reliability has become a concern with my 2018 Panamera. The rear passenger carpet has buckled for no apparent reason, and the computer system crashed while I was driving to work, causing a total blackout of the PCM and shift lights. Additionally, the second key fob has failed, and the drink holder rubber fell off after just one use. There is also a known issue with the window tint scratching due to the inner window guides. Although there are no proven fixes, Porsche is investigating the issue and will provide a solution soon. Despite these issues, I remain confident in the quality of my Porsche and trust that the company will address these concerns promptly.

Latest positive Porsche Panamera car reviews

  1. Kelton Bernhard 2025-02-17

    Vehicle year: 2011

I'm thrilled to share that this is my fourth Porsche vehicle, having previously owned a Boxster, Carrera, and Cayenne. Each one has been uniquely different, yet all have been undeniably Porsche. The Panamera is no exception, and I'm deeply impressed with its engaging performance. It easily holds its own against cars that cost twice as much, if not more. The handling, cockpit features, design, and power are all top-notch. In my opinion, the Panamera is now the one to beat in the 4 door sports luxury category. Some people may be concerned that the V6 engine would be less powerful, but having driven both the V6 and S models, I actually prefer the V6. It's lighter, more nimble, and the engine is more responsive than the heavy V8. While some have criticized the looks of the car, I personally think it looks drop-dead gorgeous!

  2. Ladarius VonRueden 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2020

This car, mine being a 2020 GTS, is perfect for empty nesters who enjoy taking road trips with their partner. It boasts great looks, comfort, versatility, and performance. While some have noted that the infotainment system lags behind others, it's not a significant issue. The steering in the GTS can be a bit heavy for everyday use, but it could benefit from dual-mode steering effort for around town and sports/highway driving. It's worth noting that I no longer consider the steering to be heavy. The car has an excellent touring range of over 600 miles, and the luggage capacity for two people on a trip with the rear seats down is impressive. Although there was a transient fault with the lane change assist system, my dealership corrected it. My previous cars were a 2006 BMW V-10 M5 and a 2013 Porsche GTS, but this is the best car I have ever owned. As a follow-up, I have now driven over 26,000 miles with no problems encountered. It's truly superb!

As someone who has owned many cars over the years, I have come to appreciate the Panamera Turbo. It combines the power of my Turbo Carerra and Aston with the smoothness and comfort of my BMW 7 series. My wife loves it too - it's not intimidating, but rather a sleeper that the whole family can fit in with equal room in the front and back, and plenty of space for shopping bags. She feels that it handles like her Boxster, despite being a much larger car. While I still love the sound of my Vanquish S, the Panamera Turbo gets all the looks. People just know what it is. It truly is a world-class drive. I would never even consider a Ferrari 612 - why bother?

Hi there! I'm excited to share my experience with the Panamera Turbo S that I received in August 2021. As a car enthusiast, I've owned many cars over the years, including some of the best ones like the 2012 Mercedes CLS550, 2001 BMW Z3, 2004 MB SL500, and the 2018 AMG GTC roadster. Although I've had many MB's and BMW's, this was my first Porsche, and it was a completely new experience for me. After test driving a Maserati and a Bentley Continental, I chose the Panamera because of its impressive features. I've been driving it for nine months now, and I must say it's one of the best driving machines ever made. Just be careful on long trips, or you might pass your destination! :)

I hope I'm not writing this review too soon, as I only picked up the car last week. I traded in my Audi A8L for this beast, and I must say, it performs incredibly well on the road. It's almost difficult to maintain the speed limit! The Panamera's style and performance have definitely lived up to my expectations. In my opinion, the interior styling beats both BMW and MB. However, the center console is a bit overwhelming with too many buttons and controls. The Sport Chrono package significantly improves the car's performance at high speeds. It would be great if Porsche could build in a standard radar system or at least offer it as an option. I also miss the GPS support that GM OnStar or MB Embrace provides. Overall, I paid 154k with lo-jack and tire/rim protection, and the car gets plenty of attention on the road. I'm happy to say that I've even hit 125 MPH! Thank you for reading my review.
