Common Porsche Panamera problems
The Porsche Panamera, a luxury car known for its high performance, has had some common problems, particularly in its earlier models. Here are some of the issues that have been reported:
- Coolant Leaks: Some owners have reported coolant leaks, which can cause the engine to overheat if not addressed. Coolant leaks can be caused by a variety of issues, including damaged hoses, a faulty radiator, or a cracked engine block.
- Transmission Issues: The first-generation Panamera could experience transmission problems, such as rough shifting. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out clutch plates, a faulty transmission control module, or low transmission fluid levels.
- Electronic Malfunctions: Issues with electronic systems, including PCM, navigation, and entertainment features, have been a cause for concern. These problems can be caused by various factors, including software glitches, faulty sensors, or damaged wiring.
- PCM (Porsche Communication Management) Issues: Many Panamera owners have reported issues with the PCM system, particularly PCM3.1, which seems to be the main offender. These problems can include the unit restarting every 2-3 minutes, map not loading, loading in the wrong language, turning on and off randomly, or not functioning at all.
While these problems have been reported, it's worth noting that many of them have been rectified in the later models, and they are often considered minor compared to the overall performance and luxury offered by the vehicle. Like any premium vehicle, the Porsche Panamera requires an investment in care to maintain its peak performance and reliability. Regular maintenance and careful selection of the model year can ensure a satisfying and reliable ownership experience.
Are Porsche Panamera reliable cars?
Porsche Panamera's engineering and design adhere to the high standards associated with the Porsche brand, and this is reflected in its longevity. On average, a well-maintained Porsche Panamera has a life expectancy of about 141,000 miles according to Vehicle Score.
Is a Porsche Panamera expensive to maintain?
Yes, Porsches are expensive to maintain compared to most automakers' vehicles. Estimates from RepairPal show maintaining a Porsche costs an average of about 83% more than the industry average.
What's the best year for a Porsche Panamera?
While not part of the second-generation lineup, the 2014 Panamera is often cited as one of the most reliable years due to its solid build quality and durable components. The 2014 Porsche Panamera is a luxury sports sedan that combines exquisite design, powerful performance, and advanced technology.
What is the life expectancy of a Porsche Panamera?
A standard Porsche Panamera should last around 150,000 miles, which is an excellent lifespan for a luxury vehicle. Thus, we would place the high mileage point at anything above 100,000 miles. Once the car reaches this point, there is a high chance any serious repairs will cost far more than the vehicle is worth.

The engine immediately went into limp mode on the highway at no less than 70 miles per hour while passing an 18 wheeler which, was a major safety issue and could have caused a crash causing serious bodily injury or death as a result. According to my research, this is a known problem. Porsche was contacted and ignored the complaint. The engine had to be completely replaced.

- Date Complaint: 2023-08-09
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WP0AD2A74GL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The contact owned a 2016 Porsche Panamera. The contact stated that while driving at 2 MPH and while the contact attempted to make a right turn when the brake pedal was depressed, the brakes failed to engage inadvertently. The steering column also became inoperable. The vehicle would not stop and the steering column would not turn, which resulted in an accident. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and a police report was filed; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was declared a total loss by the Allstate Insurance Adjuster. The contact stated that he had previously experienced brake failure while driving the vehicle and had taken the vehicle to the dealer for servicing, but the dealer could not diagnose the failure at either visit. Porsche Panamera 2023
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
- Date Complaint: 2023-07-26
- VIN: WP0CH2A75PL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: A message appeared on the dashboard indicating a "Critical Electrical Failure" and "Park Safely" when I turned the key to start the car. This car is a plug-in e-hybrid (my 3rd of this model) and I always assumed that in case of a major failure, I could either use the engine or the electric propulsion system. This was not the case. Although the instruments had power the transmission could not be moved from park and the steering was inoperative. The vehicle was totally immobilized. And the advice to "Park Safely" is ridiculous because there was no way to move the vehicle. Fortunately I was parked when this occurred. But if I was at a traffic light or this happened while I was underway, the safety implications are frightening. The vehicle would have been an immovable obstacle on the roadway. Plus there is not any kind of emergency "neutral" release so the vehicle could at least be pushed. The flatbed tow truck sent by Porsche Connect had to drag the vehicle on to its bed. And if I had not been in a nose in space as I was, even towing would have been nearly impossible.
Porsche Panamera 2015

- Date Complaint: 2023-07-18
- VIN: WP0AD2A77FL
- Components: ENGINE,HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM

The “Hybrid System Failure - Park Safely” message was displayed. The contact maneuvered the vehicle off to the shoulder of the highway. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the diagnostic test showed that the high voltage battery had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure; and the manufacturer provided the contact a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

This car has the nicest interior of any I have been in. You feel like you are wrapped in luxury. I would live in it if I could. I especially like the Yachting interior. It has alternating multicoloured words in the console. Very nice is an understatement. Lots of buttons and a touch screen navigation. The power is also more than adequate on the 'S' version.

Starting off, I must say that the looks of this car are absolutely gorgeous. It stands out from the crowd of 'boring' looking cars and can give you some unwarranted attention on the road or driving in town. Even though most people won't know that the car is a Porsche, they'll definitely know when they hear it. So, my car, a Panamera 4S Sport Turismo (a mouthful to say haha), is Volcano Grey Metallic with the 21-inch high gloss black rims. It has the standard interior in black, which is enough for me as there's still leather everywhere in the car. I highly recommend getting the Surround View Camera (360-degree camera system) if you don't want to scrape your front bumper or expensive rims. The Sport Package, which includes the sports exhaust system in black, makes the car pop and crackle on each upshift and downshift when put into sport or sport +. The sport chrono pack makes the car faster with a faster 0-60 and higher top speed at 180mph, and the rear axle steering is a must for such a large car like this. I recently picked up the car this month of July 2018 and have already driven nearly 800 miles on it. Talking about the driving dynamics, the car handles so smoothly, and there is no transmission out there that shifts as quick or as smoothly as the PDK. The Sport Turismo (fun fact) comes standard with a 3-level air suspension. If you're wondering how much of a lift the car can get, it is approximately 0.5 inches or more. With the sport chrono option, you're also able to do launch control (and don't worry, you can do this an unlimited amount of times), which is an exhilarating experience. Moving onto the interior and daily usability of the technology inside, I must say that it's impressive. At first, all this tech can seem daunting and confusing at times. However, it took me personally around 20-25 minutes playing around with all the settings to fully understand the car (it's basically a giant iPad). One of the coolest things about the navigation is that it can be put into 3D Google Earth mode.Inputting destinations or searching for places is a breeze, even without specifying the destination. The media features include Bluetooth, jukebox, aux, Sirius XM, and more. Although my car doesn't have the extra $5k Burmester Speaker system, the standard Bose system still sounds fantastic. The sport turismo offers a little more room than the standard panamera and has a lower loading height, making it a great choice for daily driveability and interior space. If you want a more detailed video, I'd recommend watching Doug Demuro's review of the car on YouTube. The car's normal mode is alright, but it's what I would consider to be the 'boring' mode. The air suspension soaks up bumps very well, even with my car's 21-inch rims. In sport or sport plus mode, the chassis and suspension become stiffer, and the engine becomes more responsive and 'alive'. I was surprised that even in the most stiff, most fun mode (sport +), the car still rode very smoothly (props to Porsche engineering). Overall, the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is an excellent choice if you're in the market for a family wagon that drives like a sports car. Vehicle year: 2018
Living around a large lake in SW Virginia, I absolutely love driving the twisty roads around the lake, using the paddle shifting to downshift into curves and then upshift on straight aways. I've always had manual shift cars and I don't miss that too much. My first long road trip was returning from Little Compton, RI to SW Virginia in just 13 hours, with only 2 stops, covering 760 miles. Surprisingly, I wasn't even tired when I got home, having driven the entire way. The seats are so comfortable! Several months ago, I had the pleasure of driving from the Greenbrier, WV down route 311 to Roanoke, VA with 79 hairpin curves. What a kick! I just touched the brakes, using mostly the paddle shifting. The best part is that this car is a head turner. At least twice a month, a stranger will come up to me and tell me how great my car looks. In addition, I absolutely love the throaty sound the pipes make when accelerating. This is truly a wonderful car that is an absolute delight to drive!

If you're considering purchasing this car, it's important to keep in mind that it comes with a high initial price tag and maintenance costs can be expensive. Additionally, good tires can be a bit pricey. However, driving this car is an absolute blast! Even after owning it for 10 years, I still look forward to getting behind the wheel. Out of the 4 previous Porsches I've owned, this one has exceeded all of my expectations. While each of my previous Porsches had their own unique features and were enjoyable in their own way, the Pany incorporates all of the best aspects of those cars while also standing out on the road with its unique appearance. It's quick, agile, and comfortable, and I still get thumbs up signals from other drivers. Despite some new car issues over the years, I still enjoy driving it immensely. I did some research on Porsche's choice of oil and found that the recommended oil (Mobil1 0W40) has a special additive wear-blend that isn't found in other oils. I stick with Porsche's recommendation and have had excellent results. Overall, I highly recommend this car if you're looking for a thrilling driving experience.

I owned the car for around 10 months, but unfortunately it spent a total of 7 months in and out of the dealer's shop. During that time, I only got to drive it for about 3 months. It seems there may be some quality issues with this car, or perhaps it's just a common issue with Porsches. Some fans tend to overlook or ignore these issues, thinking that Porsche is like Apple. The dealership's lack of helpfulness didn't make things any easier. Ultimately, the car turned out to be a lemon and I had to push Porsche to buy it back. There were a number of issues, such as the PCM going out frequently, rattling both inside and outside the car, the Chrono clock always stopping, engine lights constantly coming on, the subwoofer going in and out, and other problems. Porsche seems to be trying to grow too quickly, and until they can get their quality under control, they should focus on the basics. I've owned Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover, and other brands, but this was by far the most problematic vehicle. Some might even consider it a VW Passat with a $140k body kit. Unfortunately, my experience with Porsche customer care was not positive.

When I first saw the Porsche Panamera, I was drawn to its unique style and rarity on the road. However, after owning it for less than a year, I began to experience some issues. The transmission can be quite noticeable when switching gears during acceleration and braking, which is not as smooth as the Mercedes-Benz and BMWs I've owned in the past. Additionally, like the Volkswagens I owned in my youth, this car has some electronic issues. For example, the climate control settings change on their own about once a month, and the radio occasionally requires a restart. Despite these issues, the car is quite spacious inside. It's worth noting that some minor things have broken over the years, such as the horn, driver's window switch trim, and passenger window switch, but overall, it's still a great car.

My first Porsche was an exciting car to drive. The interior reminded me of a jet cockpit, with many 'hard buttons' to access features. Although this may seem daunting at first, everything is logically placed and easily learned, making feature selection much easier than drilling down through computer menus. In terms of performance, I have mixed feelings. Once the car is rolling, it is superb. However, there is a big catch in my opinion. When pulling away from a standing stop, there is a sort of stall/lunge sequence that almost throws you forward then back in the seat. Unfortunately, my dealer tells me that this is a known issue and likely not resolvable. If so, this could be a deal breaker.

Good car! It's super fun to drive. However, it can be quite expensive to repair and may not be suitable as a daily driver after about eight years or sixty thousand miles. Personally, I live 53 miles away from my job and wouldn't trust it to make the daily commute. But overall, it's a great car to have!
