Pontiac Vibe problems

The Pontiac Vibe is a compact car that was sold by Pontiac from 2002 to 2010. It was jointly developed by General Motors along with Toyota, which manufactured the mechanically similar Toyota Matrix. Manufactured by the Toyota-GM joint venture NUMMI in Fremont, California, the Vibe succeeded the Chevrolet Prizm in production at NUMMI and like the Prizm, it was derived from the Toyota Corolla, making it the last of the GM and Toyota developed S-body cars.
From 2002 to 2004, a rebadged right-hand drive variant of the Vibe was exported as the Toyota Voltz to the Japanese domestic market. The Voltz did not sell well in Japan and was discontinued after two model years.
Production of the Vibe ended in 2009 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand and the closing of NUMMI under the General Motors Chapter 11 reorganization. Its twin, the Toyota Matrix, was in production for another three years for the American market and four years for the Canadian market, as the Matrix was manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and was unaffected by NUMMI closing down operation.

Common Pontiac Vibe problems
The Pontiac Vibe, a compact car known for its impressive crash test scores and great fuel economy, has several common problems that owners have reported across different model years. While the Vibe is generally reliable, certain issues may arise as the vehicle accumulates mileage. Here are some of the most common problems with the Pontiac Vibe:
- Pulsating Brake Pedal: This issue can be caused by a faulty brake booster or master cylinder, leading to a spongy or pulsating brake pedal. It is crucial to have this problem addressed promptly to ensure safe driving conditions.
- Loose Wheel Center Caps: Loose wheel center caps can result in a rattling noise while driving. This issue is relatively simple to fix by tightening or replacing the loose center caps.
- Bearing Noise: This problem is more prevalent in the 2003 redesign of the Vibe. Drivers have reported hearing tapping and clicking noises, especially when activating the clutch. This issue can be caused by manufacturing defects, poor lubrication, or contamination in the transmission bearings. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address this problem before it escalates.
- Transmission Failures: The transmission in the Pontiac Vibe is known to fail early and often, particularly in the 2003 and 2009 models. Transmission failures can occur without warning and can be an expensive repair. It is essential to keep track of the vehicle's maintenance schedule to ensure the transmission stays in good condition.
- Instrument Panel Not Working: The instrument panel is a crucial component for monitoring the vehicle's performance and identifying issues. When it stops working, it can lead to dangerous driving conditions. This problem can occur without warning and may be difficult to fix, depending on the source of the issue.
- Indicator Lights Failures: Individual indicator lights may not come on when they should, which can lead to problems if the driver is unaware of engine issues. This problem can also occur without warning and may require professional assistance to diagnose and fix.
- Engine Failures: The 2003 and 2009 models of the Pontiac Vibe are known for early engine failures, which can be unpredictable and sudden. Regular maintenance is essential to protect the vehicle's other systems and prevent expensive repairs.
- Difficult to Control Speed: Some users have reported issues with the Pontiac Vibe's acceleration, which can be dangerous for drivers. This problem is likely a result of the combination of engine and transmission issues.
While the Pontiac Vibe is generally reliable, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure safe and efficient driving. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and prevent these issues before they become significant problems.

This car is really attractive. It has a sleek design that reminds me of a hatchback, which is a refreshing change from the boxy cars that are so common. The engine is impressive, and the starter is surprisingly quiet for an economy car. This model comes equipped with GM's auto-crank technology, which is a great feature. The Toyota 1.8 engine from the Corolla is an excellent match for this car, and it works perfectly with the automatic 4-speed transmission. The car is also very easy to get in and out of, which is a plus. XM radio and stability control are nice touches, and the 115-volt household outlet is a great feature as well. The car has plenty of cupholders and storage space, including some in the back and under the trunk floor. The cargo space is good and can be expanded by folding down the back seats or even the front passenger seat if needed. Overall, this is a great car to drive. The 4-speed automatic transmission shifts very smoothly, and if it doesn't, something's wrong. As long as you keep up with the maintenance and repairs, this car will last forever. I've done the normal maintenance (update 1-15-21), and I haven't had to do any unexpected repairs. I did have to replace the shocks and brakes due to normal wear and tear, but that's to be expected. The road and engine noise could be better, but it's still a great economy car.The VSC computer has a really nice feature. If it senses that you are rolling downhill and you apply more than a certain amount of pressure on the brakes, the transmission will actually downshift to keep your speed in check. It's a great way to stay safe on the road!

I love your car! It has much better fuel economy than an SUV, yet you still sit up higher than in a car. Your car is comfortable and great looking. It handles well even in recent snow and ice.

We bought this car new after researching cars that got good mileage and we couldn't be happier with it. The car has been extremely reliable with a current mileage of about 65000. It has a five-speed and since teaching my daughter to drive stick, I now have to fight her for the car when I need it. It's great fun to drive and has loads of room for cargo. The only negatives are the aesthetics. It's not the most comfortable on long drives and the low profile tires are extremely noisy, especially on freeway expansion joints. However, overall we are very satisfied with our purchase. Now that Pontiac is gone, I would definitely consider buying a Toyota Matrix.

I was initially skeptical as the car looked small from the outside. However, my husband encouraged me to try it out and once I sat in the driver's seat, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of room inside. I was impressed by the zippiness of the car and found it to be a fun driving experience. Additionally, the car has great fuel efficiency, allowing me to go 7 days on a single tank of gas, even with a daily commute of 60 miles and running errands around town. The stereo also has great sound quality and I appreciate the convenient storage system in the back for shopping. The backseat is also spacious enough for a 6' person to sit comfortably. Overall, I am very happy with our decision to purchase this vehicle.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's great to know that you've driven it for over 30,000 miles without any issues, and that it keeps going strong. It's also great to hear that you take such good care of it by using synthetic oil and changing it every 7,000 miles.

We purchased this car in January and have already put 21,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with cupping on our tires, which has resulted in us having to replace them three times. Thankfully, Pontiac covered the cost, but it was a bit of a hassle to get them to acknowledge the issue. After some investigation, we discovered that the rear alignment was out by 1.5 degrees, which was causing the cupping. We also noticed some fit and finish issues when we first received the car. However, the biggest problem we encountered was when we discovered that the passenger side floor was flooded. When we contacted Pontiac about this issue, they suggested that it was normal for some water to enter the passenger compartment during a car wash with high PSI water or heavy rain. We were surprised to hear this and disappointed that they did not offer a solution. As a result, we have decided to switch back to Toyota. Thank you for your understanding.

I completely agree with Edumonds that the car feels sluggish, but the advantage of getting 32 mpg in the city cannot be ignored. The seating is quite comfortable and the road noise is average. Although it's not a sports car, it's still fun to drive. However, there is a recall that needs to be addressed. The PCM (performance control module) has some issues, which can leave you stranded on the side of the road if it fails. If your car is affected, you can check the specific years and engines covered by the recall at NHTSA.GOV and have it replaced. The recall covers the cost of replacing the PCM, labor, and towing to a GM dealer, but unfortunately, it does not cover a loaner vehicle. Despite this issue, the dealer is very confident about the reliability of this vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned you purchased this car new and have been putting about 8500 miles a year on it. While it's not a bad car, I understand that it may not be meeting your expectations. I wanted to let you know that I empathize with your situation and I'm here to help. I noticed that the radio face shows up in red and can be difficult to see during the daylight hours. Additionally, you mentioned that you had an LED light go out on the radio and GM wanted $350 to replace it. That seems like a lot, so I'm glad to hear that you were able to find a cheaper alternative at Best Buy. Lastly, I understand that the console armrest is too low for your arm to fit comfortably without leaning to the right, so you use a pillow to make it more comfortable. I appreciate you sharing your experience with me and I hope we can find a solution that works for you. Let me know if you have any other concerns or questions!

I had the pleasure of working for a firm that leased a variety of vehicles, one of which was the VIBE. When it was time for me to choose a new vehicle, I decided to give the Vibe a try since it appeared to be a mini SUV wagon. I must say, it was the best vehicle I have ever been issued. It was always reliable, sturdy, and surprisingly quick despite the underpowered engine (which should be a larger 4 or 6 cylinder). The only issue I encountered was starting from the line, as it lacked pep and required some distance to enter a busy, fast highway. However, when driving on the streets of NYC, I never had a problem. The only other issue I had was with the interior design, specifically the window opener locations, lack of rear seat heating, and sloppily designed air conditioning ports. Despite these minor issues, I highly recommend the Vibe to everyone.

Our '05 Vibe is a great little car! So far, we've been getting about 30 mpg in town and haven't had any mechanical or body problems after 3500 miles. While some of the interior surfaces feel a bit hard and cheap, the seats are comfortable and the overall interior is nice. The ride and handling are good both in the city and on the highway/expressway. Overall, we think it's a great value for the money spent!
