Pontiac Vibe problems
The Pontiac Vibe is a compact car that was sold by Pontiac from 2002 to 2010. It was jointly developed by General Motors along with Toyota, which manufactured the mechanically similar Toyota Matrix. Manufactured by the Toyota-GM joint venture NUMMI in Fremont, California, the Vibe succeeded the Chevrolet Prizm in production at NUMMI and like the Prizm, it was derived from the Toyota Corolla, making it the last of the GM and Toyota developed S-body cars.
From 2002 to 2004, a rebadged right-hand drive variant of the Vibe was exported as the Toyota Voltz to the Japanese domestic market. The Voltz did not sell well in Japan and was discontinued after two model years.
Production of the Vibe ended in 2009 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand and the closing of NUMMI under the General Motors Chapter 11 reorganization. Its twin, the Toyota Matrix, was in production for another three years for the American market and four years for the Canadian market, as the Matrix was manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and was unaffected by NUMMI closing down operation.

The Takata air bag inflators are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel. Two months ago, I replaced my entire front end (hubs, bearings, lower ball joints and outer ties rod ends) because the excessive noise these tires generated sounded a lot like bad bearings. The bearings themselves turned out to be fine. This tire blew out on me at 65-70 mph yesterday and almost killed me - the other front tire was almost just as bad. This manufacturer's quality control department should be notified asap, or steps should be taken to recall any of this brand that you've sold in order to limit your company's liability in case of an accidental death as a result of inadequate or insufficient safety standards. Again, this is after 4K miles on a "Kendra" tire rated for 60K - manufactured in Malaysia, Thailand or Vietnam (?). I purchased my car back in late 2008 when the model was new. Over the years, the car has had a few recalls on both the GM and Toyota components, but I had no problem getting them taken care of by the dealership. The biggest recall was on the CV boots. At 82,000 miles, I am on my second set of tires and brakes. There are some small paint chips on the hood, but no discoloration on the headlights. Inside, the only issue I have noticed is that the volume knob is a bit loose. While I have noticed that the acceleration from 0-65 is not as fast as it used to be, once you reach that speed, it accelerates to 75-85 pretty quickly. I am a safe and fast driver on the freeway. There is some rattling here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. I added visual side mirrors to help with the blind spots, and when the back seats are folded down, there is a huge loading space where I can fit 5-6 feet long objects from Ikea, such as a projector screen. My car has become quite the utility vehicle. I have always loved the high sitting position, which has been a great help for my bad back and hip. It's a shame they stopped making this model, as it would have been great to see it converted into a hybrid. Overall, I think this is one of the best-designed compact utility hatchback cars out there, especially with its high crash test rating.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you were looking for a vehicle to replace your full-size truck, and I wanted to share my experience with the Pontiac Vibe. I found that the Vibe was a great option for me because it had everything I was looking for in a car - AWD, fuel economy, dependability, and satisfactory crash test results. Even my '93 AWD Vibe gets over 30 miles per gallon! While the 123HP of the 1.8 liter engine in the AWD model is a bit underpowered, I found that the powertrain was dependable since it's a joint venture with Toyota (you may have heard of the Toyota Matrix). Additionally, the crash results were better than any other car of its size. Lastly, I really appreciated the comfortable and spacious interior and stylish exterior. I hope this helps you in your search for a new car!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love my 2004 Vibe! It has been such a reliable car for me over the past six years and 63,000 miles. I've never had to take it in for any warranty work, which is amazing! Even with all the stop and go driving I do, the brakes are still the original ones. It's no wonder that the Vibe has been a Consumer Reports Best Buy since it first came out in 2003. I'm really disappointed that GM decided to discontinue the Pontiac brand and especially the Vibe. It's such a great car! With all-wheel drive, it handles our harsh northern Ohio winters with ease, and still manages to get 20 mpg in town and 28 on the highway. I don't think I'll ever sell this car. Why would I when it's been such a great companion to me? Thanks for listening!

I recently traded in my Ford Explorer for the Vibe and I absolutely love it! The gas mileage is much better and I find that I have just as much room in the Vibe as I did in the Explorer. Although it took me some time to get used to the front wheel drive, I think it handles quite well, except when I'm next to big trucks on the highway, as I can really feel the wind pulling. The only issue I seem to be having is with the windows. Wind seems to howl through the driver's side and I think the seal is broken in the hatchback window.

I currently have 114,000 miles on my car and I am extremely satisfied with its performance. It handles, feels, and performs like a sports car thanks to its hi-tech engine and 6-speed transmission. I do wish that a supercharger was available for the GT engine, which is the same base engine used in the Lotus Elise sports car. Interestingly, the engine is built by Yamaha. I have only had to replace normal wear items such as the clutch, brakes, tires, and struts. I did experience a power window problem where the glass came loose from the regulator, but fortunately, there was a recall for that issue.

I bought this car as basic transportation 2 years ago, and it has exceeded my expectations. I love that I average 34 mpg with my 5 speed, and have even gotten over 40 on the highway. Although it's cheaply built and not as durable as my previous Avalanche, I appreciate its gas mileage and small size. Surprisingly, even with its small size, I never have an issue getting all my stuff in it - even when taking three boys to their football games. In fact, several of my friends have Vibes now, too, after seeing all the things I do with mine.

The car is definitely competent, handling well and fitting a good amount of stuff while also getting decent gas mileage. However, there are a few areas that could use some improvement. The engine can be quite loud and struggles to provide enough power, especially at higher altitudes. Additionally, the dash design could be better as the chrome gauges reflect on the windshield in sunlight, which can be quite annoying. Despite these issues, the interior materials are adequate. Overall, it's a decent car that could benefit from a few tweaks.

Thankfully, Pontiac covered the cost, but it was a bit of a hassle to get them to acknowledge the issue. After some investigation, we discovered that the rear alignment was out by 1.5 degrees, which was causing the cupping. We also noticed some fit and finish issues when we first received the car. However, the biggest problem we encountered was when we discovered that the passenger side floor was flooded. When we contacted Pontiac about this issue, they suggested that it was normal for some water to enter the passenger compartment during a car wash with high PSI water or heavy rain. We were surprised to hear this and disappointed that they did not offer a solution. As a result, we have decided to switch back to Toyota. Thank you for your understanding.

I completely agree with Edumonds that the car feels sluggish, but the advantage of getting 32 mpg in the city cannot be ignored. The seating is quite comfortable and the road noise is average. Although it's not a sports car, it's still fun to drive. However, there is a recall that needs to be addressed. The PCM (performance control module) has some issues, which can leave you stranded on the side of the road if it fails. If your car is affected, you can check the specific years and engines covered by the recall at NHTSA.GOV and have it replaced. The recall covers the cost of replacing the PCM, labor, and towing to a GM dealer, but unfortunately, it does not cover a loaner vehicle. Despite this issue, the dealer is very confident about the reliability of this vehicle.
