Plymouth Sundance problems
The Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance are compact 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks that were introduced for the 1987 model year by the Chrysler Corporation. For 1991, a 2-door convertible variant was added to the Shadow lineup; this bodystyle was not offered by Plymouth. The Sundance/Shadow replaced the Omni/Horizon models of their respective marque.
The first vehicle rolled out of Sterling Heights Assembly on August 25, 1986. In late 1988, production of the Mexican market version called the Chrysler Shadow began at Toluca Car Assembly. The Shadow/Sundance was also sold in Europe from 1988 to 1991 as the Chrysler ES. Production ended on March 9, 1994, with the Shadow/Sundance being replaced by the Dodge / Plymouth Neon.
Design
The Shadow/Sundance employed a variant of the K-car platform, the P-body, which was based on a combination of the Dodge Daytona's suspension (alongside some of its interior styling cues) with a shortened version of the Dodge Lancer's body. It had originally been intended as a direct replacement for the earlier Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon, but with the economy segment becoming more crowded after the recent introductions of Hyundai (and Yugo) to the US market, Chrysler chose to make the car a bit more substantial. The P platform, being a cut down version of the regular K platform, was also a bit heavier than the competition. The lineup also had more equipment across the board than expected for the class, at least until the 1991 introduction of the stripped-down America model.
While they appeared to have a trunk, it was actually a hatchback. Chrysler considered this a special feature and advertising literature referred to it as "hidden hatchback versatility"; the relatively large storage capacity of these vehicles was a major selling point for the company. The Peugeot 309 which had been developed to replace the European Chrysler Horizon used a similar layout. While mechanically identical, the Sundance and Shadow were differentiated by their front grill, which featured brand consistent designs, Dodge using a crosshair design and Plymouth an "egg crate" design. They also had different tail lamps. In its final year, the Shadow featured the new Dodge ram's head emblem on the hood, replacing the corporate pentastar.
In the original lineup, the three-door only Shadow ES was the sportiest model, only available with the turbocharged engine and with wider rims and tires than other models.

Common Plymouth Sundance problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Plymouth Sundance, several common problems have been identified:
- Oil Leaks: Owners have reported issues with oil leaks in the Plymouth Sundance. This problem can stem from various sources such as worn gaskets, seals, or oil pan damage. Oil leaks can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Motor Mount Breakage: Motor mount breakage is another common problem with the Sundance. Motor mounts support the engine and transmission, and when they break, it can cause excessive engine movement, leading to further damage if not fixed.
- Steering Linkage Wear: Complaints have been made about steering linkage wear in the Plymouth Sundance. This wear can result in steering issues, making the car harder to control and potentially unsafe to drive.
- CV Joint Failure: Constant Velocity (CV) joint failure has been reported by owners. CV joints are essential components of the drivetrain, and failure can cause clicking noises, vibrations, and ultimately lead to loss of power to the wheels.
- Clutch/Transmission Problems: Sundance owners have experienced issues with the clutch and transmission. Problems may include difficulty shifting gears, slipping clutch, or transmission failure, affecting the car's drivability.
- Cooling System Problems: Cooling system problems have been a concern for some Sundance owners. Issues like overheating, coolant leaks, or radiator malfunctions can lead to engine damage if not resolved promptly.
- Sweaty Vinyl Seats: Complaints have been made about sweaty vinyl seats in the Plymouth Sundance. This issue can be uncomfortable for passengers and may indicate poor ventilation or climate control within the car.
- Moving Violations: Some owners have faced moving violations related to the performance or condition of their Plymouth Sundance. This could be due to various mechanical issues affecting the car's safety and roadworthiness.
These common problems highlight the range of issues that owners of the Plymouth Sundance have faced over the years. Addressing these issues promptly through regular maintenance and timely repairs is crucial to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

I THEN TOOK PICTURES OF THE CAR AND SENT A COMPLAINT TO CHRYSLER CORP. THEY CALLED ME AND SAID THEY SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE DEPT AT D&M AND WERE TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY BRUSHING SNOW OFF OF THE CAR. THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. THE CAR IS ALL RUSTED NOW AND TODAY I NOTICED THAT THE REAR WINDOW IS SEPERATED FROM THE ROOF AT THE TOP BECAUSE THE RUBBER WON'T STICK TO THE RUSTED ROOF. THERE IS ABOUT A 1/4" GAP. I FEEL THIS HAS NOW BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE REAR WINDOW WILL MOST SURELY POP OUT IF I AM IN AN ACCIDENT. I UNDERSTAND FROM VARIOUS WEBSITES THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHERS, RESULTING IN PASSENGERS BEING THROWN FROM THE CAR WHEN THE REAR WINDOW GAVE WAY.

- Summary: IN 6/99 I PAID $950.00 TO REPLACE THE REAR TRAILING ARM AT THE MENTIONED DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS PART WAS NEW AND AN ORIGINAL . I REPLACED THIS PART BECAUSE MY SAFETY WAS IN DANGER. JUST LAST WEEK, I TOOK THE CAR IN BECAUSE OF A SQEEKING NOISE AND THE SAME DEALER WHO REPLACED THE PART, TOLD ME IT WAS BROKE AGAIN. I ASKED HIM HOW COULD THAT BE WHEN THE PART THAT CAME WITH THE CAR LASTED 143,000 MILES AND 6 YEARS AND THIS ONE ONLY LASTED 2 YEARS AND 40,000 MILES? HE TOLD ME HE DID NOT KNOW NOR COULD HE PROVIDE ME PROOF THAT THEY INSTALLED THE PART CORRECTLY AND OR USED A NEW ONE. HE SPECIFICALLY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO REPLACE IT BECAUSE MY SAFETY WAS IN JEOPARDY BECAUSE THE REAR END WOULD SOON SWAY OUT OF CONTROL. I FELT THIS WAS UNFAIR AND HE SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING ANYONE THERE COULD DO BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY . I CALLED THE CHRYSLER CUSTOMER CARE CENTER AND TALKED TO DEREK, WHO TOLD ME IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF MY TIME TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH HIS OFFICE ABOUT A PART OUT OF WARRANTY THAT " IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF MY TIME BECAUSE CHRYSLER WAS CUT AND DRY ON THEIR RESPONSES" WHEN I ASKED TO SPEAK TO HIS DIRECT REPORT, HE TOLD ME " HE WAS IT AND THAT HIS DIRECT REPORTS DO NOT SPEAK TO THE CUSTOMERS. WHAT ASSURANCE DO I HAVE NOW FROM CHRYLSER AS A CONSUMER ? BY THEIR ACTIONS, CHRYSLER HAS DEMONSTRATED TO ME THAT NOT ONLY DO THEY NOT CARE ABOUT MY SAFETY, THEY ARE NOT TOO CONCERNED ABOUT THE QUALITY OF WORK THEY ARE DOING OR NOT DOING AT MY EXPENSE. I AM A LOYAL CUSTOMER AND PAY GOOD MONEY TO HAVE THE DEALER FIX THESE PROBLEMS .

Back in the spring of 1991, I was lucky enough to pick up a brand new black cherry Sundance as a company car. It was a fantastic little car with peppy performance, comfortable bucket seats, and a cool floor-mounted shifter with a center console. The car even had rear folding seats and a hatchback, which came in handy when I needed to move a full-sized couch. With gas mileage in the low 20s, it was a practical choice too. I absolutely loved that little Plymouth and had lots of fun in it, even doing some work on the go. The only issue I had was when I accidentally scraped the passenger side door against a tree - oops! If you're lucky enough to find one of these in decent condition, I highly recommend buying it.

I had to replace everything from the rear axle three times, the transaxle twice, the CV joints 4 times, and it was in the shop with constant mechanical and electrical problems. Despite taking care of our cars and being always on-time with maintenance, the engine blew--literally. Eventually, I sold it to a junkyard. It is important to note that the car was still exceptionally nice inside and out when it finally died.

Hi there! I loved reading your story about your 93 Sundance! It sounds like it was the perfect car for you and your wife at the time. It's amazing that the 2.2 engine never let you down and that you were able to sell it 11 years later with 155,000 miles. Although the air conditioning lasted about 9-10 years, it's impressive that the car was still running strong. It's great to hear that you felt like you got your money's worth and that it was a good value for what you paid. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I have been extremely satisfied with this car as it has never let me down and has taken me everywhere I needed to go, even through the treacherous Michigan ice and snow where I passed SUVs that had slid off the road. Although it has started to rust along the edges and I had to replace the head gasket and rebuild the engine once, I have had wonderful transportation for over 13 years with incredible mileage, all for the original price of $8,600 plus ~$2200 for the above mentioned repairs. This was my first car, bought with my 're-adjustment money' after returning from the Peace Corps, and I plan to keep driving it until the very end. Hopefully, by the time it reaches 200,000 miles, there will be a selection of affordable USA made hybrids available!

I owned this car for 2 1/2 years and it had 104000 miles on it when I bought it. Although it had many problems, including bad exhaust, gas tank, no A/C, electrical, rack and pinion, computer chip, and brakes, I was impressed with how well it protected me in a car accident. I ran into a van that had run a stop sign, but the airbag went off and the car crumpled enough to cushion the impact, resulting in absolutely no interior damage. Overall, it's a good small car, but be prepared for potential problems.

It's so great to hear about your experience with your car! You bought it back in 1995 with only 8,000 miles on it and had it for almost a decade until fall 2003 when the head gasket failed and the head got cracked. At that time, it had 120,000 miles on it. Although it wasn't worth the 700-1000 to fix it, you had a lot of fun memories with it. You had to replace the automatic transmission (a common complaint with the 94 Duster) at 30,000 miles, replaced the rack and pinion system at 40,000 miles, and the air conditioner failed at around 70,000 miles. Despite all the repairs, it was always a fun little car to drive, great cornering, and great power with the V-6.

I have owned numerous Plymouth vehicles before, and I can confidently say that this one did not meet my expectations. The head was cracked in four places, and the catalytic converter failed. However, it did start every day this winter. It is possible that the issues were caused by the dealership I purchased it from.

Vehicle year: 1994
Although it was the first car I ever owned, I regret purchasing it. My parents got it used in 2004 with 115,000 miles, and unfortunately, it has been nothing but trouble since then. The air conditioner, back left speaker, driver's side window, and passenger side door are all in need of repair. Additionally, the paint is peeling off, and there is a rust hole clear through the front of the hood. Unfortunately, it is not a reliable car at all, and I have been stranded on the side of the road multiple times.
