2000 Mazda Protege problems
The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.
It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".
The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).
Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

THIS TIME I TOOK THE CAR TO THE MAZDA DEALER. THE WIRE CONTROLLING THE LIGHTS HAD OVER HEATED WHICH CAUSED THE WAND TO BURNOUT AND A WIRE CONNECTOR TO WARP. A NEW WIRE WAS THREADED FROM THE CONNECTOR THROUGH THE FIREWALL TO THE CONTROL WAND. THE LIGHTS ARE NOW WORKING. *TR
TIRES PROBLEM

HE WENT TO A TIRE SERVICES CENTER AND THERE HE WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO REPAIR THE TIRE AND ALSO THEY RECOMMENDED HIM TO CHANGE ALL THE TIRES (KUMHO SOLUS HP/4/PLUS-P195/55//15. I JUST BOUGHT TWO OF THEM IN DECEMBER. I WROTE TO KHOMO TIRES WEB-SITE ASKING IF THERE IS ANY RECALL FOR THE TIRES AND WHAT KIND OF GUARANTEE IS THERE. I NEVER GOT A REPLY. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-12-20
- VIN: JM1BJ2229Y0
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: MY 2000 MAZDA PROTEGE LX HAS HAD SOME "MAJOR SURGERY" LATELY. ABOUT A YEAR AGO (EARLY 2008), WHEN BACKING UP ESPECIALLY, THE CAR WOULD MAKE A STRESS THEN POP NOISE ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND TOWARDS THE MIDDLE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR. I WAS TOLD THIS AND THAT. I HAD NEW REAR STRUTS PUT ON, ALIGNMENTS, TIGHTENING OF THE SUSPENSION, ETC. SOME OF THESE WORKED TEMPORARILY. MY CAR WAS INVOLVED IN AN "ACCIDENT" AT THE END OF DECEMBER 2008. WE HAD BAD SNOW AND ICE AND MY CAR'S LEFT FRONT TIRE HIT AN ICE RUT PRETTY GOOD. AFTER THAT, MY CAR POPPED AND POPPED. TURNS OUT, THE ENTIRE STEERING RACK AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES WITH IT HAD TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I DROVE THE CAR BACK TO WORK AFTER THE REPAIR, THE STICK SHIFT TURNED TO JELLO. I BARELY MADE IT BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BUSHING HAD COME APART. WELL, NOW I HAVE BEEN BATTLING A CREAKY CLUTCH PEDDLE. WITH EACH RELEASE, IT CREAKS LIKE AN OLD HINGE AS IF IT'S TRYING TO GET BACK INTO POSITION. IT'S GETTING WORSE. I TALKED TO MECHANICS AND READ ON-LINE ABOUT IT. SOME SAY IT COULD BE THE FLUID RESERVOIR (HOW EMPTY IT IS) OR THIS SPRING THAT IS RUBBING ON ANOTHER COMPONENT. THE PEDAL FEELS OKAY, IT'S NOT LOOSE. I JUST NOW WONDER IF THIS IS COINCIDENTAL DUE TO THE REPAIR OF THE STEERING RACK AND WEAK BUSHING OF THE STICK SHIFT. AND FOR THE RECORD, THE MANUAL IN THE CAR IS FOR AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, NOT A 5SPD. I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN 2001 WITH 24,000 MILES ON IT. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-11-17
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM1BJ2216Y0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I HAD BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT IN EARLY 2006 THAT WAS REPORTED TO THE POLICE AND WHEN I APPLIED MY BRAKES, THEY WERE NOT EFFECTIVE. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE TYPE OF TIRE I HAD ON MY CAR SO ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO I SPENT 600 FOR TOP OF THE LINE TIRES. ON 11/17/2006, I WAS BEHIND A CAR THAT SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES AND WHEN I APPLIED MINE THEY DID NOT SLOW THE CAR DOWN SO I KEPT PUMPING THEM SO HARD I BRUISED MY FOOT AND CRASHED INTO THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME TOTALING MY CAR. I HAD MY SEAT BELT ON BUT SINCE THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE BRAKES WERE BEING APPLIED, THE BELT REMAINED LOOSE AND MY HEAD SMASHED INTO THE WINDSHIELD SHATTERING IT. AFTER GIVING MY INFO TO THE DRIVER I HIT AND MAKING SURE THAT I WAS ALRIGHT, HE LEFT AND SAID NOT TO WORRY AS THE DAMAGE TO HIS CAR WAS MINIMAL AND HE COULD FIX IT HIMSELF. AN OFFICER DID ARRIVE AND NOTED THAT MY TIRE MARKS WERE EXTREMELY FAINT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND ALMOST UNDETECTABLE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHICH SUPPORTED THE BRAKE FAILURE. I DON'T KNOW WHO I NEED TO CONTACT TO EXAMINE MY CAR TO DETERMINE THE BRAKE FAILURE BUT I NEED TO DO THIS BEFORE MY INSURANCE COMPANY CLAIMS THE CAR. ANY ASSISTANCE OR DIRECTION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *JB

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-10-06
- VIN: JM1BJ2226Y0
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I JUST SPENT 2200 ON REPAIRS TO MY TRANSMISSION. MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN LUNGING FORWARD WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND THE REPAIR SHOP THOUGHT IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. THEY FOUND MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION. IT WAS FIXED AND NOW MY VEHICLE IS LUNGING FORWARD AGAIN. IT JUST STARTED AGAIN TODAY. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING TOO CLOSE TO SOMEONE, I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. MAZDA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND FIX THIS AND DO A RECALL. NOW I HAVE TO GO AND LET THE SHOP TRY TO SEE WHY THIS IS GOING ON. I MAY BE OUT MORE MONEY. I HATE THIS CAR AND I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND MAZDA. AND JUST NOTE THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 59000 MILES. *JB
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-05-20
- VIN: JM1BJ2226Y0
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I FEEL THAT MY 2000 MAZDA PROTEGE DX WITH 56,000 MILES ON IT IS A VERY UNSAFE VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE HAS SUCH LOW MILES ON IT TO BE GIVING ME ANY TROUBLE. WHEN I AM DRIVING, THE VEHICLE FEELS AS IF IT IS GOING INTO OVERDRIVE BY ITSELF AND THEN RETURNS BACK TO NORMAL. MY OVERDRIVE LIGHT FLASHES ON AND OFF WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE BECAUSE WHEN IT DOES THIS, IT LUNGES YOUR VEHICLE FORWARD. I HAVE NOT BEEN GOING VERY FAST WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED. I AM VERY AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE IN FEAR THAT AT A HIGHER SPEED, THIS COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS THAT ARE SIMILAR AS MINE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. I HAVE NO WARRANTY ON MY VEHICLE AND REALLY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX IT, BUT IT HAS TO BE DONE. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ON THE INTERNET, MAZDA HAS PRODUCED A VERY POOR TRANSMISSION. I FEEL THAT THIS IS ONLY THE START. I AM HOPING THIS WILL NOT LEAD TO ME PUTTING IN A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP READ THE CODE AS SOLENOIDS. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE TRANSMISSION SHOP TO GET THE SOLENOIDS REPLACED. THIS WILL COST ABOUT 400.00. I AM HOPING THAT THIS WILL FIX MY VEHICLE AND GIVE ME PEACE OF MIND. *JB

JUST SHY OF THREE YEARS OF OWNERSHIP I AGAIN TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER SERVICE DEPT WITH THE SAME PROBLEM CONCERNING THE CAR'S ACCELERATION. THIS WAS MY THIRD REQUEST TO HAVE THE DEALER LOOK INTO THE MATTER. AGAIN, I WAS TOLD NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR. THE CAR'S ACCELERATION CONTINUED TO ACT UP. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-01-07
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: AS I ACCELERATED TO 30 MPH, THE "O/D OFF" LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD FLASHED AND THE SPEEDOMETER STAYED AT ZERO, EVEN THOUGH I WAS DRIVING AS FAST AS THE OTHER CARS ON THE STREET. IT FELT LIKE NEUTRAL GEAR. THE MANUAL INDICATES THE FLASHING LIGHT IS DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. I REMEMBERED THAT WITHIN A FEW MONTHS OF PURCHASING THIS NEW CAR, THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED DUE TO PECULIAR SOUNDS, SO I WORRY ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THIS COMPONENT SINCE I DO NOT DRIVE MUCH. *JB

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-05-01
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: OWN A 2000 MAZDA PROTEGE DX W/AUTO & AIR, 41K MILES THAT WAS PURCHASED NEW. UPON DRIVING FOR 45 MINUTES ON THE HIGHWAY, THE O/D TRANSMISSION LIGHT STARTS BLINKING. WHEN I BRING TO THE CAR TO A STOP, TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART, THE LIGHT IS NO LONGER FLASHING. I DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES AFTER THE O/D LIGHT STARTS FLASHING BEFORE LETTING THE CAR SIT FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE TRANSMISSION FLUID ALSO GETS DIRTY AT AN ACCELERATED RATE VS. WHAT WOULD NORMALLY BE EXPECTED FOR A CAR. LAST FULL FLUSH AT 38K MILES, AND THE FLUID IS NOW BROWNISH-RED. TRANSMISSION SHOPS TELL ME I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION FOR $1,500, BUT I CAN IMAGINE I'D NEED THAT ON A WELL-MAINTAINED JAPANESE CAR WITH 41K MILES. AT THIS POINT I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR FOR FEAR THE TRANSMISSION WILL FAIL (FROM WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD) AT ANY MOMENT. I'VE HEARD THIS PROBLEM IS PREVALENT IN THE 626, AND ALSO HAPPENS IN THE PROTEGE. PLEASE HELP IN CREATING A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE.*JB

In late 2012, I made the wise decision to purchase my 2000 Protege with the proper 5-speed manual. Since then, I have experienced no mechanical problems whatsoever. The 1.6ZM Engine runs like clockwork and provides a zippy ride. Despite the car's somewhat comfortable ride, I believe it has the potential for even more power. Additionally, I have noticed some rust around the rear wheel arches. However, this is a common issue with Proteges due to Mazda's assembly process. Despite these minor setbacks, the Protege is one of the most reliable and tough vehicles out there.
-
I have owned this car for nearly two years and it has been fantastic, except for a collision with a deer that occurred in October 2000. The handling is excellent and the acceleration is lively, while still providing a comfortable ride. The Bridgestone OEM tires perform well, but the car can be a bit noisy. At highway speeds, the car remains extremely stable, even in strong crosswinds. The stereo with CD player is impressive for an OEM system. If you are searching for a good used car, this is definitely worth considering!
-
Other than minor recalls, this car is just as dependable as any of its Japanese counterparts. Its performance/price ratio is actually higher than the competition by a good bit. The ES's interior is clean, tightly finished, and nicely laid out.
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Protege ES that I purchased back in July 2000. Since then, I've put 37K miles on it and I must say, it's been a solid and well-built car. Not to mention, it's quick and has a great look to it. One of the things I love about it is that it's not as common as some of the other small-medium sedans out there, like the Honda Civic or Corolla. This is actually the second Protege we've owned, the first being a 1991 LX model. If you're in the market for a great car that won't break the bank, I highly recommend checking out your local Mazda dealer. Thanks for reading!

I researched three cars (Honda, Toyota, and Mazda) for about three months and ultimately decided on the 2000 Protege LX, which only had 20,400 miles and is a snappy, tight little car. In my opinion, the Protege LX has the same, if not better, performance than the more expensive Toyota and Honda models, and it's made in Japan too. It purrs like a kitten!

This was my first new car. Although I regret the purchase, I learned a lot from the experience. In hindsight, I should have gotten a Corolla, but I appreciate the lessons I learned from this car. The gas mileage is not great for a small 1.6L auto, but it has been reliable and has never broken down on me. I did have the rad replaced twice under warranty, but I appreciate the manufacturer's commitment to customer satisfaction. At 3 years, I noticed rust on the bottom front passenger side door, and now I have rust inside both rear wheel wells due to the harsh winters where I live. Unfortunately, the AC no longer works and never blew very cold, but I still appreciate the car's interior and trunk space. The CD player is extremely finicky, sometimes it plays and sometimes not, but I think it might be related to temperature and humidity. The volume goes up when turning it down, and some dash lights in the tach are blown, but overall, I still appreciate the car's reliability.
Geovany Orn 2024-10-15
There seems to have been a factory defect in the way a front knuckle was put in the steering column, but after several attempts, the dealership was able to fix it. Despite a few repairs, it's a good little car. We recently had to replace the catalytic converter, starter, and flywheel, and we've noticed that the brakes wear out quickly even though we drive very conservatively.
Maynard Schneider 2024-07-27
The car had a good solid feel during the first 2 years, but unfortunately, after that, things went downhill. The radio volume control doesn't work properly, making it hard to control the volume, and the auto memory doesn't work either. Additionally, there is rust on most Mazdas of the same year, specifically on the right side passenger door and trunk. The passenger mirror is also prone to being ripped off easily. Furthermore, there have been engine problems, with the RPM not being stable, and the automatic door lock has failed for one of the doors. Lastly, the AC has a leak and the ABS module has failed. Despite these issues, I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

I bought my car brand new and have had no problems in the 5 years I've owned it. Everything has always worked perfectly, and I particularly enjoy the excellent steering feel and how well it corners. The stiff springs are also a plus. It's able to carry 4 people without any noticeable extra weight. With a stick shift, I can get about 30 miles per gallon in the worst city conditions and up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway with careful driving and frequent use of 5th gear. I always use 92 octane gas to avoid any knocking when accelerating uphill and to ensure the engine lasts longer. The only downside is that road noise can be high on coarse surfaces.
