2002 Lexus Is 300 problems
The Lexus IS (Japanese: レクサス・IS, Hepburn: Rekusasu IS) is a compact executive car (D-segment in Europe) sold by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota, since 1998. The IS was originally sold under the Toyota Altezza (Japanese: トヨタ・アルテッツァ, Hepburn: Toyota Arutettsua) nameplate in Japan from 1998 (the word Altezza is Italian for 'height' or 'highness'). The IS was introduced as an entry-level sport model positioned below the ES in the Lexus lineup.
The first-generation Altezza (codename XE10) was launched in Japan in October 1998, while the Lexus IS 200 (GXE10) made its debut in Europe in 1999 and in North America as the IS 300 (JCE10) in 2000. The first-generation models were powered by a straight-six engine and available in sedan and wagon variants. The second-generation IS (codename XE20) was launched globally in 2005 with V6-powered IS 250 (GSE20) and IS 350 (GSE21) sedan models, followed by a high-performance V8 sedan version, the IS F, in 2007, and coupé convertible versions, the IS 250 C and IS 350 C, in 2008. The third-generation Lexus IS premiered in January 2013 and includes the V6-powered IS 350 and IS 250, turbocharged IS 200t/300, hybrid IS 300h and performance-tuned F Sport variants. The IS designation stands for "Intelligent Sport".
First generation (XE10; 1998)
Produced as a direct competitor to the luxury sports sedans of the leading European luxury marques, the XE10 series Toyota Altezza and Lexus IS was designed with a greater performance emphasis than typically seen on prior Japanese luxury vehicles. The engineering work was led by Nobuaki Katayama from 1994 to 1998 under the 038T program code, who was responsible for the AE86 project. Design work which had been done in 1995 by Tomoyasu Nishi was frozen in 1996 and filed under patent number 1030135 on 5 December 1996, at the Japan Patent Office. At its introduction to Japan, it was exclusive to Japanese dealerships called Toyota Netz Store, until Lexus was introduced to Japan in 2006. The Japan-sold AS200 Altezza sedan and AS300 Altezza Gita correspond to the Lexus IS 200 and IS 300 models respectively, as sold in markets outside of Japan. The Lexus IS' primary markets were North America, Australia, and Europe. The Altezza Gita was a hatchback-station wagon version sold in Japan and was known in the US and Europe as the Lexus IS SportCross. The AS300 Altezza Gita was the only Altezza with the 2JZ-GE engine; in export markets this engine was available in the sedan models as well as the Lexus IS300 Sedan.

One of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2002 Lexus IS 300 is a sticky dash. This issue is caused by the rubbery material used in the dash and center console, which tends to disintegrate and become sticky over time due to heat and wear
. This can result in scratches and permanent fingerprints on the dash and center console. While there are ways to refurbish or replace the affected parts, it can be difficult to remove the dash and may require hiring a professional.
Another issue reported by owners is a GPS failure. This problem is specific to models equipped with a GPS system, which may not function properly or at all. While this issue may not affect all models, it can be a significant inconvenience for those who rely on GPS navigation
Power steering leaks are also a common problem reported by owners of the 2002 Lexus IS 300. This issue can result in a loss of power steering fluid, which can affect the vehicle's handling and steering. While this issue may not be as common as the sticky dash or GPS failure, it can still be a significant concern for owners.
Radiator leaks are another issue reported by owners of the 2002 Lexus IS 300. This problem can result in a loss of coolant, which can cause the engine to overheat and potentially cause serious damage. While this issue may not be as common as the sticky dash or GPS failure, it can still be a significant concern for owners.
Valve cover leaks are also a common problem reported by owners of the 2002 Lexus IS 300. This issue can result in a loss of oil, which can affect the vehicle's performance and potentially cause serious damage to the engine. While this issue may not be as common as the sticky dash or GPS failure, it can still be a significant concern for owners.
In addition to these common problems, owners of the 2002 Lexus IS 300 have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, brake calipers, climate control, and E-shift models. While these issues may not be as common as the sticky dash or GPS failure, they can still be a concern for owners.

Owners have reported issues with the sticky dash, GPS failure, power steering leaks, radiator leaks, valve cover leaks, automatic transmission, brake calipers, climate control, and E-shift models. How long does 2002 Lexus IS 300 last?
Generally IS300 should take 150-180K mi without any major issues and with minimum work being done to it. If you take car of it I see no problems going over 200-250K mi on the 2JZ motor. Other things I would worry about falling apart before the motor does thou (Suspension perhapse).

These engines and transmissions are amazing but everything around it may need attention as mentioned above. You may end up spending up to $3,000 to replace the things around the motor but I think it's worth it considering the cost of a new vehicle these days.

IS 300 has great looks and great performance. With the five-speed transmission, it is every reason I needed to never purchase the low-quality, poorly-conceived product offered by the 'Big 3' automakers. Every detail has been addressed by Lexus engineers to make a high-quality product that is fun to drive and easy to maintain. This car is worth every dollar you pay for it.

I am thrilled with my car purchase! After a year of researching, I am still happy with my decision. However, I was disappointed with my experience at the dealership. Stick-shifts were hard to come by in my area, and the dealership took advantage of that. I was also displeased to learn that Lexus dealers use the same bargaining tactics as other lower-end dealers. They used deceiving tactics such as changing around the numbers to try to confuse me and purposely miscalculating things. As an engineer, I didn't fall for the tricks as easily as someone less experienced in math could have, but it was still pretty disappointing.

I recently purchased this used Lexus with over 100k miles and so far, it's been a great car. The overall build quality is impeccable, although there are some interior pieces that feel a bit cheap for a Lexus. The interior room is snug, but not uncomfortable (I'm only 5'9

There are many sporty cars in this class, but this car is undoubtedly the best! It perfectly combines the thrill of a fast and fun sports car with the luxury that you would expect from a maker like Lexus. You should definitely consider getting one of these!

This is actually my second IS300! I've owned a total of 63 cars in my life (I tend to get bored easily), including 12 BMWs. I used to think I was a lifelong BMW addict, but the IS300 changed all that. Its styling, responsiveness, and dependability won me over completely. I've never had any issues with either of the IS300s I've owned, and they're the only cars I've kept for longer than three months. I'm currently tastefully modifying my current one, and after owning a GS300 in between the IS300s, I'm now a Lexus (2JZ) convert. The IS300 has everything I need in a car: sportiness, luxury, speed, and dependability. It's truly the complete package!

If you have around 6k to spend on parts, this car could be perfect for you. However, if you don't have that kind of budget, it might not be the best choice as parts can be expensive. It's also worth noting that this car can be difficult to work on, but with a bit of luck, you might have a better experience than I did. Lastly, it's best to avoid driving this car in bad weather conditions.

The automatic transmission may be slow to respond and jerky, and it may take some time to shift when starting from a stop. Additionally, the car may understeer and have an over-active traction control, which can limit the fun of rear-wheel driving. Some drivers may find the seats uncomfortable, and there may be a fair amount of wind noise. The gas mileage may not be great, and there may be occasional squeaks and rattles. Finally, some drivers may feel that the interior materials look and feel cheap.

I would recommend checking out the new Infiniti G35 or Acura TL instead. This one doesn't quite measure up.

This car has a really sporty look, but it falls short in terms of straight line speed. Even when I floor it, it seems to hesitate. I think an increase in torque would be called for.

This has been an amazing car! I bought it as a present to myself for my 30th birthday. It handles beautifully, looks fantastic, and is incredibly reliable.
