Jaguar Xjs problems
The Jaguar XJ-S (later called XJS) is a luxury grand tourer manufactured and marketed by British car manufacturer Jaguar Cars from 1975 to 1996, in coupé, fixed-profile and full convertible bodystyles. There were three distinct iterations, with a final production total of 115,413 units over 20 years and seven months.
Originally developed using the platform of the then-current XJ saloon, the XJ-S was noted for its prominent rear buttresses. The early styling was partially by Jaguar's aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer—one of the first designers to apply advanced aero principles to cars—however Sayer died in 1970, before the design was finalised.
Its final iteration, produced from 1991 to 1996, was manufactured after Jaguar was acquired by Ford, who introduced numerous modifications – and eliminated the hyphen in the name, marketing Jaguar's longest running model simply as the XJS.

Common Jaguar Xjs problems
The Jaguar XJS, a grand tourer produced from 1975 to 1996, is known for its presence and performance. However, it has faced criticism for various issues that have affected its reputation and reliability. Here are some common problems with the Jaguar XJS based on complaints from owners:
- Engine Overheating: One of the most common problems with the Jaguar XJS is engine overheating, which can lead to severe consequences such as blown head gaskets. This issue is particularly prevalent in the V12 models, which are known for their high heat output. Regular maintenance and monitoring of the cooling system are crucial to prevent engine overheating.
- Water Leaks: Water leaks are another common problem with the Jaguar XJS, particularly around the door mirrors and sun visors. These leaks can cause damage to the interior of the car and lead to electrical issues. Sealing around the door mirror and regularly checking for leaks can help prevent this problem.
- Corrosion: The Jaguar XJS is prone to rust and corrosion, particularly in the lower section of the front wings and around the windscreens and taillights. Regular inspection and maintenance are necessary to prevent rust and corrosion from causing significant damage to the car.
- Marelli Failure: The Marelli failure is a common problem with the Jaguar XJS, which can cause complete power loss and even engine fires. This issue is caused by the rotor failing, which shuts down one bank of the engine and causes the ECU to continue fuel supply to the other bank. This poured fuel can reach the CAT con and catch fire.
- Gearbox Issues: Knocking sounds from the gearbox are common in the Jaguar XJS, particularly in automatic models. This issue is usually caused by the gearbox mount coming loose, which can be resolved by tightening the bolts.
- Electrical Problems: The Jaguar XJS is known for its complex electrical system, which can cause various issues, particularly in the V12 models. The wiring in the engine bay can resemble spaghetti, leading to electrical problems due to direct heat from the engine.
- Coolant Issues: The coolant in the Jaguar XJS needs to be flushed and replaced every two years to prevent it from turning brown and causing damage to the engine. If the coolant is not replaced regularly, it can lead to blown head gaskets and other engine problems.
- Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are common in the Jaguar XJS, particularly from the rear main oil seal. Replacing the oil seal can help prevent oil leaks and ensure the engine runs smoothly.
In conclusion, the Jaguar XJS is a classic car known for its presence and performance, but it has faced criticism for various issues that have affected its reliability. Regular maintenance and monitoring of the car's systems can help prevent these problems and ensure the car runs smoothly.
Is the Jaguar XJ-S reliable?
Reliable and fun weekend car
I've had the 1994 XJS 4.0L six cylinder for about five years and it's been surprisingly reliable as an occasional driver. I've only had to do some work on the water pump, and the model has proven to be worry-free, especially with historic issues regarding electronics, or other quirks.
Why is the Jaguar XJ-S so cheap?
The Jaguar XJ-S was built from 1975-96 and was the most affordable mass-produced V-12 sports car ever built. But owners constantly balanced enjoyment and aggravation, which has depressed prices to bargain levels. Stiffer emissions and safety regulations demanded a new kind of Jaguar sports car in the 1970s.
Are Jaguar XJ-S expensive to maintain?
Jaguar XJS Repair & Maintenance Costs
The annual maintenance cost of a Jaguar XJS is $710. Repair and maintenance costs vary depending on age, mileage, location and shop.
Are Jaguar V12 engines reliable?
The Jaguar V12 continued to power models in the range during the 1990s and with all the early problems long sorted out the V12 became one of the best engines to have been produced anywhere.

- Summary: I WAS PARKED IN A SMALL STRIP CENTER. I HAD JUST LEFT THE BARBER SHOP AND I TOOK NOTE OF ALL THE KIDS IN THE PARKING LOT AND A SUV PARKED NEARBY. I TURNED ON THE ENGINE OF MY 1988 XJSC JAGUAR, ENGINE SOUND SEEMED NORMAL. I THEN TURNED MY HEAD TO VIEW THE REAR AND PROCEEDED TO MOVE IN REVERSE, BUT AS I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED IN A VIOLENT MANNER ON ITS OWN. THE CAR MOVED APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET IN SECONDS AND I FOUND MYSELF GOING BACKWARDS FOR NO LOGICAL REASON. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD, BUT AS I DID THE CAR LUNGED SIDEWAYS INTO A BLOCK WALL PROTECTED BY A CONCRETE STEEL POST. AS I HIT THE POST, THE REAR OF MY CAR BOUNCED INTO THE REAR OF A PARKED SUV. POLICE SUSPECT THAT I TRAMPED ON THE GAS PEDAL, BUT FOOT WAS ALREADY ON THE BRAKE FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END OF THE CRASH. I HAVE THE BEST DRIVER RATING WITH STATE FARM, I DO NOT USE ANY DRUGS LEGAL OR ILLEGAL AND WAS EXTRA CAUTIOUS THAT DAY BECAUSE OF ALL THE KIDS IN THE AREA. SO FAR, THE REAL CAUSE OF THIS ACCIDENT HAS NOT BEEN FOUND ALTHOUGH I SUSPECT THE CRUISE CONTROL TO BE THE PROBLEM. *TR
