Jaguar Xjr problems
The Jaguar XJ (X308) is a full-size luxury saloon car manufactured and marketed by Jaguar Cars for years 1997–2003 across two generations and featuring the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine and Jaguar independent rear suspension. It was the third and final evolution of the Jaguar XJ40 platform that had been in production since 1986. It was preceded by the Jaguar XJ (X300).
Exterior
The X308 kept much of the same exterior styling as its predecessor, the Jaguar XJ (X300), carrying its rounded four-headlamp bonnet, low roofline, sloping tail, and wrap-around rear light clusters. From the front, the two generations can be differentiated by the shape of the indicator lenses (rectangular on the X300, oval on the X308), and also by the shape of the fog lamps and lower valance air intake, both of which are more rounded on the X308.
The front and rear bumpers were both changed along with the taillights which had red/clear lenses rather than red/grey lenses. The grille surround and badging was slightly changed. The headlight fixtures also included forward parking lights housed with the brights, new to X308.

Common Jaguar Xjr problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Jaguar XJR, several common problems have been identified:
- Transmission Problems: Jaguars, including the XJR, are known to experience early transmission failure. Detecting transmission issues requires a comprehensive diagnostic to accurately assess the need for repairs.
- Coolant Loss & Engine Difficulties: Coolant loss in Jaguars can stem from leaks in the coolant reservoir, potentially causing the engine to overheat and incur significant damage. Monitoring coolant levels and addressing leaks promptly is crucial to prevent engine overheating.
- Brake Failure: The brake pressure accumulator, a component of the antilock brake system, can fail in Jaguars, leading to a stiff brake pedal and difficulties in slowing down or stopping. Unusual noises from the front brakes may indicate issues that require attention.
- Ignition Coil Issues: Failure of ignition coils in Jaguars, like the XJR, can result in engine misfiring and idling problems. These issues may not always trigger the check engine light, making it essential to address any irregular engine performance promptly.
These problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of trouble in Jaguar XJR cars to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
What is the problem with the 2004 Jaguar XJR?
The most common problems with the 2004 XJR are the torque converter, transmission programming, air suspension compressor, coolant expansion tank and the earlier XJs had wiring harness issues.
Is a Jaguar XJ expensive to maintain?
The average annual repair cost for a Jaguar is $1,123, which means it has average ownership costs. The other factors that contribute to Jaguar reliability include an average of 0.6 visits to a repair shop per year and a 14% probability of a repair being severe.
Are Jaguar XJR rare?
One of the rarest modern Jaguars is just sitting around waiting to be bought. RM Sotheby's recently listed a one-of-27 road-going XJR-15 for sale in California. The fact that the supercar is even up for grabs is noteworthy enough, but this example also has less than 100 miles on the odometer.
Is the Jaguar XJ a reliable car?
Much more so than you might imagine. While Jaguar languished in 29th place out of 32 in our list of most reliable used car brands, the XJ fared rather better. In fact, owners named it the second most reliable used luxury car in 2023: only 14% went wrong, and the only area of concern were non-engine electrics.

- Date Complaint: 2011-08-21
- VIN: SAJDA15B6YM
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: JAGUAR IS A GREAT CAR MANUFACTURE BUT I BELIEVE ALL 98-2000 JAGUAR V8'S SHOULD BE CONSIDERED LEMON'S IF THEY HAVE NOT YET BEEN RETROFITTED WITH THE LATEST TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER DESIGN JAGUAR CURRENTLY USES. THESE CARS ARE TICKING TIME BOMB'S IF THEY HAVE NOT. ACCORDING TO MULTIPLE FORUMS AND VARIOUS JAG ENTHUSIAST WEB SITES JAGUAR NEVER PUT OUT A RECALL ON THIS PARTICULAR MATTER; RUMOR HAS IT THAT THEY DID NOT WANT THE RECALLS JEOPARDIZING JAGUAR'S REPUTATION BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IT HAS ALREADY BEEN JEOPARDIZED BY THEM NOT WANTING TO ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL THESE V8'S FAILING DUE TO MALFUNCTIONING TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS; THE VERY INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED WITH MY 2000 JAGUAR XJR WITH ONLY 80K MILES THIS IS JUST UNHEARD OF. THIS IS JUST A FEW OF THE PROBLEM'S THIS VEHICLE HAS GIVEN ME. SOMETIMES IT GOES INTO "RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE MODE" AT THE MOST UNSAFE TIMES SUCH AS MERGING ON TO A FREEWAY OR MAKING A LANE CHANGE. THE VEHICLE PRETTY MUCH DOES NOT ALLOW ITSELF TO REV PASS A CERTAIN RPM AND IF YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE WILL CUT ALL POWER OUT? I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM DIAGNOSED MULTIPLE TIMES ONLY TO GET NO ANSWERS. LASTLY SOMETIMES THE CAR GOES INTO "FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE" AND WILL NOT ALLOW ITSELF TO START UNTIL IT BASICALLY FEELS LIKE IT. I KID YOU NOT THIS CAR IS VERY TEMPERAMENTAL AND STARTS WHEN IT WANTS TO. WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A LINEAR SWITCH CAUSING THE MALFUNCTION -$700.00 AND THREE MONTHS LATER THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST. I CONTACTED JAGUAR IN REGARDS TO ALL THIS AND THEY SIMPLY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE. THE CAR IS TOO OLD AND FAR PAST ITS WARRANTY. ITS ALMOST AS IF THEY'RE CARS ARE THAT NEW FAMILY PUPPY EVERYONE LOVES AT FIRST AND AS SOON AS THE DOG GETS OLD SO DOES HE. THEY COULD CARELESS ABOUT THE LATER MODEL CARS AND THAT'S A SHAME CONSIDERING THE LATER MODELS ARE STILL RECOGNIZABLE AS A JAGUAR UNLIKE THESE NEWER MODELS THEY HAVE.
Jaguar Xjr 1999
- Date Of Incident: 2007-06-13
- Date Complaint: 2007-07-05
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: ENGINE DEFECT - INABILITY OF JAGUAR MAINTENANCE TO REPAIR: THE 1999 JAGUAR XJR WHICH WAS PURCHASED JUNE 2002 WITH 21,715 MILES ON IT FOR $40,000.00. VEHICLE WAS LEMON FROM BEGINNING. ENGINE STALLED AT HIGH SPEEDS, SHOWED ITSELF TWICE AS EARLY AS JANUARY 2003, ONLY TO CONTINUE SHOWING ITSELF 3 MORE TIMES IN 2003, 2 MORE TIMES IN 2004, 1 MORE TIME IN 2005, AND ONE MORE TIME IN 2006,. THEN, AGAIN ON JUNE 13, 2007, A TOTAL OF 10 TIMES. EXAMPLE OF SERIOUS ENGINE STALLING DEFECT. ON MAY 5, 2003, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK IN THE JAGUAR. SHE WAS ON THE DULLES TOLL ROAD TRAVELING AT ABOUT 60 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE DIED. THE CAR FINALLY CAME TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF THE TOLL ROAD. CARS WERE ?WHIZZING? BY AT HIGH SPEEDS ON THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT OF OUR STALLED VEHICLE. MIRACULOUSLY, NO CAR HIT THE STOPPED CAR, AND LUCKILY, SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE, WHICH COULD NOT ALWAYS BE RESTARTED WHEN THESE INCIDENTS OCCURRED, AND DROVE IT DIRECTLY TO THE JAGUAR DEALER. CONTINUED SERIOUS PROBLEM: THESE NUMEROUS INCIDENTS THAT WE ENCOUNTERED OVER THE YEARS ARE POTENTIAL ?ROAD FATALITIES? JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN, AND THE PROBABILITY THAT ONE DAY WE WILL BE A ?ROAD FATALITY? IS INCREASING RAPIDLY. I HAVE TRIED A NUMBER OF TIMES TO WORK WITH THE JAGUAR DEALER TO SOLVE THIS POTENTIAL PROBLEM TO NO AVAIL. SPOKE WITH JAGUAR EXECUTIVE ON MAY 5, 2003 IN ATTEMPT TO REPLACE VEHICLE. I AGAIN SPOKE WITH THIS SAME EXECUTIVE BECAUSE OF CONTINUED ENGINE STALLING, ATTEMPTED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO HAVE UNSAFE VEHICLE REPLACED IN A FAIR AND REASONABLE MANNER IN JUNE 2007. I BELIEVE THAT IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THIS PROBLEM BE RESOLVED BEFORE WE RUN OUT OF LUCK AND A POTENTIAL ?ROAD FATALITY? BECOMES A REALITY AND AFFECTS US ALL. NO RESOLUTION HAS BEEN OBTAINED. *AK

THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART UNTIL I PULLED OVER PUT IT IN PARK AND STARTED IT. THIS MEANT A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND THE BRAKES POSSIBLY FAILING IF THEY WERE USED TO MUCH. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED ON 2-16-04. THE THROTTLE BODY HAD DEVELOPED A GROVE WHERE THE THROTTLE PLATE CONTACTS THE BORE. THIS WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THIS STALLING PUTS THE DRIVER IN A DANGEROUS POSITION ON THE HIGHWAY. ON THE LAST OCCASION HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE WHERE THERE WAS NO SHOULDER. FORTUNATELY THE TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT. *JB

Hi there! I've been the owner of this car since 1998. It's in mint condition and has never been in an accident or had any external or internal damage. It's in perfect operation!

After hearing from the media that Japanese cars were the best, I decided to buy a LEXUS LS. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. It lacked the soul of a Jaguar and was often mistaken for a Camry. The valet even parked it in the back. However, since switching to the XJR, I always get a smile and the front row at restaurants. I won't be going back to POSURE cars anytime soon. I love my new car!

I really like the way the car looks and handles. The supercharged engine is so smooth and powerful, it leaves the line with no hesitation. Plus, the gas mileage is great considering the size and weight of the car. The only downside is that the low profile Pirelli P Zero tires can ride a little harshly at slow speeds on rough pavement.

370 horses make it fun and there's lots of subtle, head-turning class. This is my 3rd Jag and I must say, they're getting better with each generation. However, I have been disappointed with the little problems that pop up, such as part failures, irritating rattling noises due to build quality, and electronics issues. Twice now it has stopped running out of the blue while driving, and the dealer can't seem to find the problem. I have also noticed that the XJR has a tendency to hop when cornering and hitting a bump at speed, even with proper alignment and top of the line tires.
