1997 Jaguar Xjr problems

The Jaguar XJ (X308) is a full-size luxury saloon car manufactured and marketed by Jaguar Cars for years 1997–2003 across two generations and featuring the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine and Jaguar independent rear suspension. It was the third and final evolution of the Jaguar XJ40 platform that had been in production since 1986. It was preceded by the Jaguar XJ (X300).

Exterior

The X308 kept much of the same exterior styling as its predecessor, the Jaguar XJ (X300), carrying its rounded four-headlamp bonnet, low roofline, sloping tail, and wrap-around rear light clusters. From the front, the two generations can be differentiated by the shape of the indicator lenses (rectangular on the X300, oval on the X308), and also by the shape of the fog lamps and lower valance air intake, both of which are more rounded on the X308.

The front and rear bumpers were both changed along with the taillights which had red/clear lenses rather than red/grey lenses. The grille surround and badging was slightly changed. The headlight fixtures also included forward parking lights housed with the brights, new to X308.

Common 1997 Jaguar Xjr problems

The 1997 Jaguar XJR, a high-performance luxury saloon, is known for its smooth and powerful engine, comfortable cabin, and pliant ride. However, like any car, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the transmission. Some owners have reported that their XJRs went into a bucking mode, where the car would suddenly jerk and lose power. This problem was often accompanied by the transmission light coming on. In some cases, the check engine light also appeared, and diagnostic codes indicated issues with the transmission control and gear ratio sensors. The solution to this problem can vary, depending on the specific cause, and may involve replacing sensors or other transmission components.

Another common problem with the 1997 Jaguar XJR is related to the engine's sensors and electrical system. Some owners have reported that their cars would not start, even after attempting to jump-start the battery. In some cases, an auto electrician diagnosed the problem as a blown ECU (Engine Control Unit), which would require replacement. However, other owners have reported that the problem was simply a dead battery or a blown fuse, which could be easily fixed.

In addition to these specific problems, there are also some general issues that owners of the 1997 Jaguar XJR should be aware of. For example, the front suspension bushes need to be replaced every 25,000 miles, which can be a significant maintenance expense. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the throttle fouling the underbonnet liner and the power steering pipe chafing the alternator terminals, which can cause performance and reliability issues.

Despite these common problems, the 1997 Jaguar XJR has generally proven to be a reliable and durable car. In a recent JD Power survey, Jaguar was the top British marque, and the XJR fared well in the Warranty Direct reliability league. However, as with any car, regular maintenance and inspections are essential to ensure that the XJR remains in good condition and continues to provide reliable performance.

What problems did the 1998 Jaguar XJ have?

1998 XJs had problems with throttles not opening properly, and some 1999 cars had transmission glitches that caused them to lock up. You should also check - or get someone else to check - that the throttle is not fouling the underbonnet liner and that the power steering pipe is not chafing the alternator terminals.

What problems did the Jaguar XJ have?

Water pumps on 5.0 V8 and 3.0 Supercharged XJ models are prone to failure, sometimes they can fail in less than 20,000 miles. This is because coolant gets inside the bearing housing corroding the water pump bearing.

What is the problem with the 2004 XJR?

The most common problems with the 2004 XJR are the torque converter, transmission programming, air suspension compressor, coolant expansion tank and the earlier XJs had wiring harness issues.

Are Jaguar XJR rare?

Only five LM-spec cars were built, while road-legal XJR-15 production came in at 27 units. Come 2023 and the XJR-15 is a million-dollar classic with low mileage on the odometer.

Positive 1997 Jaguar Xjr car reviews

This car not only turns heads but also leaves the competition behind. It's very fast! I always have a smile on my face when I drive this car. It's the best kept secret around! However, please note that the gas mileage is about 13-16 and the Pirelli P Zeros may pull the car on rutted roads.

  2. Raoul Dietrich 2024-08-11

You got a great deal on a beautiful car! It drives like a dream and the 4.0L supercharged motor is surprisingly fuel efficient, getting around 25 mpg. The 17 inch rims are a nice touch and really make it a head turner. While the CD changer in the trunk may not be ideal, it's not difficult to switch to the radio if you get tired of your CDs. It's worth noting that parts can be expensive, especially the crest, but you were able to save some money by shaving it off after it was stolen.

  3. Julien Schoen 2024-04-10

The XJR is a remarkable supercar that truly stands out. It exudes understated elegance and sophistication. You might catch a glimpse of the XJR logo on the vehicle or the 255/45zr17 tires, which hint at the power that lies beneath the hood. The car is responsive and handles well in city driving, but it truly shines on open roads, putting a smile on your face. It's important to keep up with preventive maintenance to avoid expensive repairs. The XJR is a car that can hold its own against even the most prestigious brands like BMW and Mercedes.

  4. Maximo Muller 2024-03-02

Being in the auto industry for over 25 years, I did my research on this purchase and searched for 2 years for this beauty. You cannot find a better combination of style, class, and performance out there for the buck. I recommend replacing the exhaust system with a stainless steel one, such as Mina or Borla. In my experience, Yoko's are the best tires. Additionally, I suggest getting a radar detector.

  5. Lew Kuvalis 2024-03-02

Buying this car was a dream! I was amazed by the car's horsepower, but I never fully comprehended it until I floored it. It was such a fun experience! This car is a dream to drive and is even comfortable on long drives. It's one of the smoothest cars I've ever driven. I remember hitting 100 on the interstate and not even noticing it until I looked down. When I pointed this out to my better half, she jokingly reminded me that our son was in the car. I personally think he enjoyed the ride too!
