2012 Infiniti Qx56 problems

The Infiniti QX80 (formerly called the Infiniti QX56 until 2013) is a full-size luxury SUV marketed by Nissan's luxury division Infiniti. The first-generation QX56 was built in the United States and is based on the first-generation Armada. The second-generation model was released in 2010 as a model produced in Japan, which used the sixth-generation Patrol (later also marketed as the second-generation Armada since 2016) as the base vehicle instead. Since the 2014 model year in 2013, the vehicle was renamed to the QX80 as Infiniti renamed their entire product line under a new nomenclature.

First generation (JA60; 2004)

The first-generation QX56 (model code JA60) is based on the first-generation Armada, while also sharing the F-Alpha platform with the first-generation Titan. It is the first Infiniti built in the United States. The QX56 was only marketed in the United States, Canada, Russia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Development on the JA60 QX56 began in early 2000 alongside the WA60 Armada. A final design by Masato Takahashi was reached in early 2001, with an August 2001 design freeze for early 2004 start of production.

The rear door handles were installed on the C-pillar as a Nissan design tradition started with the D21 Pathfinder released in 1985 to visually make it appear like a two-door truck with a camper shell, with conventional door handles on the front doors.

The first-generation QX56 was powered by a 5.6-liter VK56DE V8 engine (320 hp (239 kW) at 4,900 rpm and 393 lb⋅ft (533 N⋅m) torque at 3,600 rpm) and a 5-speed automatic transmission with an overdrive. As is common with aluminum blocks, each cylinder in the engine was lined with cast iron. The valvetrain was a DOHC design with four valves per cylinder. Infiniti designed the QX56's throttle responsiveness to correspond to specific drivetrain modes: when the driver selects all-wheel drive, the throttle becomes less sensitive, presumably to allow easier regulation of acceleration when off-road.

The QX56 had around 9,000 lb (4,082 kg) of towing capacity. Mileage at peak performance drain is 12 miles per US gallon (20 L/100 km; 14 mpg‑imp). It comes in one trim level, with only key options such as: DVD entertainment system, 4WD/2WD, and a bench instead of captain chairs as the second row. Other features which came standard were a ten-speaker Bose system, DVD-based navigation system, leather trim for all seats, dual-climate control, 18-inch chrome alloy wheels, and an adaptive cruise control system. A Precrash system was a unique feature in the market as well.

Since the demise of the Q45 (which was priced above the QX56) after 2006, the QX56 was the most expensive Infiniti sold in North America and was Infiniti's only full-size vehicle.

In early 2007 for the 2008 model year, the Infiniti QX56 received a minor facelift which included a revised grille, a redesigned interior, a new intelligent key system, more standard equipment, new third-row seats that fold electronically and standard 20-inch chrome wheels. Introduced at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in January 2007, the facelifted model went on sale in April 2007.

After the 2010 model year, the QX56 and Armada no longer share the same body, as the first-generation Armada continued to be produced in the United States until the 2015 model year, while the second-generation QX56 switched to the body used by the Y62 Patrol.

Common 2012 Infiniti Qx56 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Infiniti QX56 2012 model, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Abnormal Noise from Timing Chain Area:
    • One of the most reported problems with the Infiniti QX56 is abnormal noise coming from the timing chain area. This issue is often characterized by a grinding noise resembling a metalworking tool or cutting machine, especially when starting a cold engine. The timing chain in the QX56 has been known to stretch prematurely, leading to contact with surrounding metal and causing the disturbing noise. Repairing this problem can be costly, involving the replacement of the timing chain mechanism.
  2. Rapid Wear of Timing Chain:
    • The Infiniti QX56 is prone to rapid wear of the timing chain, particularly the chain on the right half that is additionally loaded with a high-pressure fuel pump. This premature stretching of the chain can lead to significant issues, including the chain making contact with surrounding metal components and producing noticeable grinding noises. The repair for this problem can be quite expensive due to the need for replacing the timing chain mechanism.
  3. Transmission Issues:
    • Owners have reported transmission problems with the Infiniti QX56, including shocks during gear shifts and trembling during acceleration, indicating issues with the torque converter. While repairs for the torque converter may be needed, they are relatively inexpensive compared to other mechanical problems. Additionally, there have been concerns about hanging on the highway at high speeds, potentially due to overheating fuses, which may require further investigation and repair.
  4. Electrical and Electronic Component Reliability:
    • The Infiniti QX56 is known for the reliability and endurance of its four-wheel drive components, including electronic and electrical systems. These components do not typically exhibit characteristic problems, providing owners with a sense of reliability and durability. However, rough off-road driving conditions may necessitate more frequent oil changes in transmission units to maintain optimal performance.

These common problems reported by owners of the Infiniti QX56 2012 highlight key issues that can affect the performance and reliability of this luxury SUV. Addressing these concerns promptly and with professional assistance can help ensure the longevity and efficiency of the vehicle.

  • VIN: JN8AZ2NE4C9
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: While driving at highway speed, rear of vehicle suddenly became uncontrolled and caused vehicle to swerve dangerously. If a vehicle would have been in the adjacent lane an accident would have occurred. Upon initial inspection, the left rear lower control arm failed catastrophically due to rust rendering the vehicle undrivable. Driver and passenger were put at risk as a result of this incident. Deeper inspection revealed the right rear control arm was also compromised due to rust as well as the two forward mounting points of the modular rear suspension cradle (framework). No warning lights appeared, however the steering wheel did begin correcting to the right just prior to event, similar to heavy wind situation. Parts have not been inspected by manufacturer. Pictures attached. Parts are available for inspection upon request.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-13
  • VIN: JN8AZ2NE1C9
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I own a 2012 QX56. Check engine light comes on and I take it to the dealer. It's the Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (catalytic covers - P0430 code) I was warned before I bought this vehicle about the cats going bad. Infiniti dealer, that I purchased the truck from said "this vehicle has been serviced at an Infiniti dealer since day one. Every possible service that was needed was completed. The owner took immaculate car of this truck. You won't have any issues." So tell me, if this vehicle was driven exactly how it was supposed to be and yet at 113K miles the cats go bad, why isn't there a recall?? This is a "top of the line SUV" and yet it needs $4500.00+ in engine repairs at just over 113K miles. Infiniti needs to step up and take responsibility for this issue. If dealerships are warning you about this issue, obviously there is a KNOWN issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-20
  • VIN: JN8AZ2NEXC9
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2012 Infiniti QX56 has a loud rattling noise coming from the engine. This started around Oct 2020 and comes and go. It has got worse over the last month or so and has started stalling and acting like it doesn't want to go. A few times the car will start shaking while I'm driving. It has been checked out and codes for converter and timing chain are there. Engine light is on. I drive this car with my 2 children and am afraid of the safety issue. I know there is numerous others having these same 2 issues with my year and make of car. Spoke with Infiniti Corp. and they will not do anything about it because my VIN is not under the recall. However, the vehicles with this issue that have been repaired under the recall have the same engine and same issues that I'm having. I think all vehicles in 2012 regardless of VIN should be under the recall as I'm seeing so many with these issues.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-04-10
  • VIN: JN8AZ2NE6C9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: A WHINE OR HISS WHEN I START THE VEHICLE AND IT GOES AWAY AFTER ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES. IT WAS DETERMINED TO BE A TIMING CHAIN ISSUE BY MY MECHANIC. THERE APPEARS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FOR THE 2012 QX56, BUT NOT FOR MY SPECIFIC VIN. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THE NHTSA ALLOWS A MANUFACTURER TO ONLY INCLUDE A PORTION OF THE 2012 MODEL AND NOT OTHERS. THIS IS A SAFETY RECALL! DOES SOMEONE AT THE NHTSA RECONCILE THE 2012 QX56 VEHICLES SOLD VERSUS THE VINS ELIGIBLE TO BE COVERED UNDER THIS SAFETY RECALL NOTICE? OBVIOUSLY, OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM! I SUGGEST THE NHTSA TAKE SAFETY RECALL NOTICES MORE SERIOUS AND HOLD MANUFACTURERS ACCOUNTABLE!!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-14
  • VIN: JN8AZ2NC4C9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: MY WIFE DROVE TO MY DAUGHTERS SCHOOL SCHOOL FOR A BASKETBALL PRACTICE. SHE LOCKED THE DOORS USING THE KEYFOB LIKE ALWAYS. WHEN SHE GOT BACK TO THE CAR SHE UNLOCK THE DOORS USING THE KEYFOB, BUT THIS TIME THE DRIVERS DOOR DID NOT OPEN. SHE TRIED USING THE DOOR ENTRY BUTTON ON THE HANDLE WHICH DID NOT WORK. SHE THEN GOT IN THRU THE PASSENGER DOOR AND TRIED TO PULL THE HANDLE TO OPEN THE DOOR AND THAT DID NOT WORK. FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR SHE HAD TO CLIMB OVER THE CENTER CONSOLE TO GET INTO THE DRIVER SEAT. I CHECKED THE OPERATION MYSELF WHEN SHE GOT HOME AND I COULD NOT FIND A WAY TO OPEN THE DOOR. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE DESIGN OF THE PLASTIC ACTUATOR AND ITS COMPONENT. WITH THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM, I AM SURPRISED THERE ISN'T A RECALL SIMILAR TO THE TAKATA AIRBAGS SINCE THIS WOULD NO PASS AN INSPECTION AND WOULD BE A HAZARD IN THE CASE OF AN ACCIDENT

TODAY ALL MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON AND MY HUSBAND TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE INFINITI DEALER, JUST TO HAVE THE MECHANIC RETURN A FEW MINUTES LATER TO INFORM US IT IS A TIMING CHAIN ISSUE. I AM HUGE ON RESEARCHING AND AFTER A FEW HOURS OF RESEARCH AND REALIZING THAT SOME OF THESE MODELS HAVE HAD RECALLS ISSUED ACCORDING TO VIN# FOR THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE, I AM IN AWE ON WHY THIS RECALL IS ONLY BEING APPLIED TO SPECIFIC VIN #'S AND NOT EVERY SINGLE 2012 QX56 MODEL. EVERY COMPLAINT LISTED ONLINE FROM OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES LIST THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. HOW ARE WE BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR A MORE THAN OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING PROBLEM.
