2023 Hyundai Santa cruz problems

The Hyundai Santa Cruz is a four-door compact pickup truck manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. Released in 2021 for the 2022 model year, the Santa Cruz is the first four-door pickup truck sold by Hyundai in the North American market. The vehicle is based on the Tucson crossover SUV, and uses a unibody chassis design.
Industry analysts expected the Santa Cruz to attract car or crossover buyers instead of people who have owned a larger, traditional pickup truck.
Overview
The Santa Cruz was previewed by a concept pickup truck at the 2015 North American International Auto Show with the same name.
The production model debuted in April 2021 for the North American market. Marketed as a "Sport Adventure Vehicle", it is closely related to the fourth-generation Tucson, sharing the same project code (NX4, with additional 'a' to denote American production and 'OB' suffix, meaning 'open bed'), production site, and dashboard design. It also features a similar styling introduced on the fourth-generation Tucson, with its front end dominated by the grille with integrated daytime running lights.
The Santa Cruz uses a front-wheel-drive configuration as the base model, with an available upgrade to the HTRAC all-wheel-drive system. The HTRAC system allows for the rear wheels to receive up to 50 percent of the drive power via a lockable clutched center differential. It is equipped with strut suspension for the front wheels and a multi-link independent suspension in the rear. The rear suspension is equipped with self-leveling shock absorbers to keep the truck level even when there is weight on the bed or a trailer on the hitch.

Common 2023 Hyundai Santa cruz problems
The 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to comfort, quality, and functionality.
- Water Leakage: Some owners have reported water leakage into the back seats, which was initially thought to be due to an open window or clogged sunroof drain. However, the issue was found to be a poor window seal. Hyundai has stated that this issue has not been found at scale, but it remains a concern for some owners.
- Sliding Tonneau Cover: The sliding tonneau cover has been reported to seize in the half-open position when temperatures drop below freezing. This can be inconvenient and may require manual adjustment or waiting for warmer temperatures to use the cover properly.
- Radar System Issues: In cold, slushy weather, the Hyundai Santa Cruz has sent warnings to drivers about potential radar system malfunctions. While cold weather is not Hyundai's fault, it is concerning that the vehicle's radar system may not function properly in adverse weather conditions.
- Fuel Injectors: Some owners have reported issues with fuel injectors, with two out of four injectors failing on brand new trucks. This can lead to wet interiors and may not be covered under the extended warranty, which could be a significant concern for those using the vehicle for work or recreation.
- Engine Problems: The 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz has three NHTSA complaints for engine problems at an average of zero miles. This suggests that there may be engine-related issues that have affected some owners, although the specific nature of these problems is not detailed in the NHTSA data.
These issues, while not universal, have been reported by some owners and may be of concern for those considering purchasing a 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz. It is essential to thoroughly research any vehicle before making a purchase and to be aware of potential issues that may arise.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-17
- VIN: 5NTJCDAE5PH

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
- VIN: 5NTJBDAE8PH
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: On 3 separate occasions this has occurred . When accelerating, the engine or power train completely loses all propulsion. Twice I was starting a left hand turn and crossing oncoming traffic. On one occasion I was turning right onto a 50 MPH highway and quickly veered off the road onto the berm. The only item on dash board flashing on the third incident was the cruise control preset and it was flashing 20. At the time I was not using the cruise control and I did not set it for 20. No dash board warning lights lit during the first two losses of power. I reported it to the dealer. Today I had a maintenance appointment and inspection at the dealer. After that inspection, they informed me that they found no codes to identify the issue. I should let them know if it continues. My 3 failures happened at approximately 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 miles. My safety and that of my passenger were most definitely affected each and every time. After 30 seconds to one minute the full functionality returns as if it never happened.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
- VIN: 5NTJEDAF9PH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: For the entire day (XXX) my car would go limp when trying to shift gears with an automatic transmission. At least 3-5 second delays when pressing on gas and NOTHING happens. Very dangerous when driving in traffic as you cannot get out of the way of oncoming traffic! It finally moves very slowly as if you are in the wrong gear. I would say that the 2 and 4 gears it would not go into at all. As I floored the accelerator, I would see my MPG rating go sky high as no gas was getting into engine. The clutch was slipping when trying to accelerate. Then I got a main display message that said "A possible condition with your Transmission Control System has been detected. A full system check is recommended to be done when convenient, Please contact your local dealership to schedule an appointment". The yellow CHECK ENGINE symbol also came on and stayed lit on the dash. This problem continued for an hour as I drove the car and got home safely. I drove it again an hour later and the same problem persisted again. I also received a Hyundai Bluelink message that a problem had been detected with my Transmission Control System and gave me error code P1C2D03. You may want to look at Hyundai Recall 236 (which only covered 22 Santa Cruz models, even though everything is the same in 23 model and the recall should be extended by you). Also look at Hyundai TSB 22-AT-009H which is my exact issue. These 23 Santa Cruz need to be recalled and fixed before someone gets killed. Went to Hyundai dealer the next day, and the car was operating normally although the CHECK ENGINE light was still on. They performed a software update and said if the problem continues that they will need to replace transmission. I have no confidence that this problem is fixed. Way too many people out there dealing with the same as I found out on [XXX] Thank You INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. There was no repair performed. The contact stated that the failure had reoccurred. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 1,000.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-11
- VIN: 5NTJEDAF8PH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Truck stopped shifting corrrectly with 11550 miles. Would get stuck in 8th gear or 2nd gear. Shifting into manual mode produced no response. I brought it to the dealer 6/12 and upon receiving the P1c2d03 code, they told me it would be a hp oil pump. Looking the issue up, it seems the 2022's had this issue and required a new trans, not oil pump. A week later (6/20) dealer ship calls and says it's fixed with the oil pump. I go to collect my truck and don't make it out of the lot before it stumbles and gets stuck in 2nd gear again. Left it with the dealer again, but haven't heard anything since, and they won't return my calls. Currently 7/9 with no response.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
- VIN: 5NTJEDAF4PH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: so it seems that recall NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V746000 also effects 2023 santa cruz with the dct. While driving got transmission error on gauge once slowed by traffic vehicle would not shift and would just rev, after almost being hit by another car. figure out if you let it rev and then let off gas pedal car would upshift. But this was done by trial and error. this has happened 3 times and first 2 dealer says nothing wrong. code was p193b79. I think the recall to fix these transmissions should be expanded to 2023 and probably 2024 cars.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
- VIN: 5NTJDDAF1PH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: On 3/22/2024 I was driving my 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz with 19k miles about 30 mph. My transmission suddenly became jerky without warning and acted liked it did not want to downshift, staying in higher RPMs. When it did decide to downshift, it lurched the vehicle badly. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the incident. A few seconds after it happened, the check engine light came on, along with a diagnostic notification on my infotainment screen. This indicated a powertrain issue. I then received a notification on my Hyundai Bluelink App regarding a powertrain issue: "Transmission Control System problem, please see dealer".I dropped the vehicle off 3/27/2024 and As of this writing on 5/13/2024 my vehicle has been sitting at a local dealership for almost 50 consecutive days. In the 5 day period between 3/22-3/27 I was instructed it was OK to keep driving the vehicle until drop-off. I experienced 2 more instances of a rough downshift in that time. When I dropped the vehicle off on 3/27, I was told I could take the vehicle home and drive it until they figure out what to do with it and receive instruction from Hyundai Corporate. This was an extremely reckless and dangerous thing to tell me I feel. The local dealer claimed they had not seen this issue before, had to wait for Hyundai Corporate to instruct them on what to do, but a transmission replacement was possible. Eventually they were instructed to replace the transmission oil pump and do a software update. Research shows the 2022 model Santa Cruz had a recall for the transmission oil pump. Recall # 22V746000 "transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash". Yes I believe mine and my spouse's safety, and other's was/is at risk, as this happened as I was driving and there was a previous recall for this exact part. I have informed Hyundai Corporate America of the issue and waiting for responses and resolutions from them.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-16
- VIN: 5NTJEDAF3PH
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Driving through my neighborhood. Went to enter a Hwy and tried to accelerate. Could only go about 25 mph. with engine speed fluctuating. Checked to see if I had hit paddles by mistake. That is what it felt like. Pulled over put in park. checked for dash notifications none. Got up to about 45, speed fluctuations again. Pulled over turned off ignition. That fixed the problem. Safety concern if traffic was heavier, I would have been rear ended easily. Was no place to pull over right away.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
- VIN: 5NTJCDAE8PH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While driving the vehicle during winter the temperature of the engine dropped due to thermostat failure leading to no heat in the cabin and a check engine light. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-14
- VIN: 5NTJDDAF3PH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 11/14, 2023 Drove about 2-3 miles when all warning lights on the dash came on like a Christmas tree. I was coming to a 4 way stop, both roads were 55 mph speed limits. There was a car behind me and another coming to a stop from the left. I wanted to get across the intersection to pull over and assess the situation. While trying to get across the intersection there was no response to the throttle pedal, ended up idling through the intersection at 4 mph. After getting across I pulled over and turned the truck off, let it sit for maybe a minute or so. Then I restarted and the only warning light that stayed on was the service engine warning light. The throttle showed response at that time, I started driving slowly and eventually felt it was ok to gain speed. Was able to drive at posted speed limits. 11/1582023 I took truck to Hyundai service department. 11/17/2023 Hyundai service advisor called and stated the tech support line told them to try replacing the wire harness because of erratic readings. The harness was on backorder until 11/27/23. 12/4/2023 Service advisor told me the harness was now on national backorder until 12/7/23. Again he said he will contact me when the part comes in. Truck went into service on Nov 15, 2023 and now Dec 17, 2023 tech line suggested wire harness to be replaced is still not available.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: 5NTJDDAF9PH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Vehicle has 2k miles on it and it experiences a loss of power from a stop when accelerating. The vehicle shakes as if it is not getting enough gas similar to a manual transmission if you took your foot off the clutch when the vehicle was in 1st gear. It happens about once a week at random times, no codes produced. Dealership advises with no codes displayed and their inability to recreate the concern there is nothing the manufacturer will allow them to do. Dealership has had the vehicle for over 3 weeks. This is becoming a more common issue, yet nothing is being done by manufacturer to address for consumers. If my wife or I are operating the vehicle and cannot get out of the way of an oncoming vehicle due to a sudden loss of acceleration this poses a great risk for serious bodily harm or injury.

- VIN: 5NTJCDAE8PH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Car will not start properly and shuts itself off after which a strong odor of burning plastic is present in the vehicle. It will periodically do this almost once a day if not every other day. I have taken it in to the dealer 4 times last time they had my car for two weeks and could not replicate porblem because they only drive it 5 miles and it will not happen unless vehicle is being daily driven. I have found numerous other owners with the same complaint. Hyundai will not authorize shop to work on car and advises them to release it to me each time. They only attempted to fix once and gave it back to me all over times. The car is at the dealer again and they will not work on it till october to try to find the problem again. I will not drive this car due to risk of car deciding to turn it self off or start on fire due to whatever is melting when this happenns car is still at red mcombs northwest as of today.

- VIN: 5NTJCDAE1PH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I went to my Hyundai dealer because the tunneau cover is taking in a lot of water when it rains. All sides are taking in the water. This even occurs when I go to the car wash. The whole person of the cover is to keep things dry and from things flying out of the bed of the truck. The dealer spent four hours trying to resolve it and contacted Hyundai tech line for assistance. They were told that they know of the issue, but there is no fix for it because enough people have not registered a complaint about this situation. While it might not be a hazard, it makes the bed unable to be used. I have to have it shop vacuumed to be able to put things into it.

You have a fantastic automobile! I really appreciate how well it handles and the power it has on take offs. In fact, I think it drives even better than my Tucson.
-
Firstly, I must say that I may have overpaid for this Car/Truck (Cruck). However, I believe it is worth every penny. As someone who has owned many different types of vehicles over the years, including muscle cars, big and small trucks, Fords, Chevys, Dodges, Toyotas, Volkswagens, and BMWs, I can confidently say that this SC is a solidly built, amazing driving Sport Activity Vehicle. The interior is well laid out and of high quality, with every tech and safety feature you could want or need. Additionally, it has received the highest safety ratings from NHTSA. Oh, and have I mentioned the warranties? Overall, this Santa Cruz fits my needs perfectly. If you don't mind receiving thumbs up and questions from strangers, then I highly recommend this Hyundai Santa Cruz.
-
I was initially drawn to the vehicle because of its appearance. However, after driving it, I fell in love with its power, features, and impressive gas mileage. Plus, it has a bed like a small truck! I was fortunate enough to get the limited edition at a fair price.
-
I really like this vehicle because it's eye-catching and has a lot of bells and whistles that caught my interest. It's small and compact, yet it packs a punch. Handling and movability are easy, although the back seats are a bit tight for me. However, it makes up for it in towing capacity. The bed is small, but you can store and haul a lot of items in it, and it even has a cooler section which is perfect for ROTC cadets to keep their sodas in. Overall, I would definitely consider trading in or purchasing this truck. If I were to choose, I would go for the SE model since the SEL models are having trouble with the double transmission. In my opinion, this is an excellent compact truck and I give it a five-star rating.
-
I've had my Santa Cruz for about 45 days now and I just absolutely love it! It has plenty of leg room for me (I'm 6ft tall) and for my wife as well (she's 5'7

The Santa Cruz Crew Cab has some areas for improvement. It has poor acceleration, a short trunk bed, a hard ride, and requires premium fuel, which can be uncomfortable for some. I loved my 2023 night edition Santa Cruz until it started doing things on its own. Radio stations would change while I was driving or sitting still, and a speed limit notification caused my truck to slow down even though I had driven through that area before without incident. Additionally, a notification that something was being saved (with the date and time in the file name) popped up on my radio screen at least three times. While these issues are concerning, I am confident that I can find a solution to ensure my truck is functioning properly.
