The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

  • Date Complaint: 2019-07-19
  • VIN: 1GDS8DC43C1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON MY SECOND GMC SAVANNA 1500 VAN, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT FUEL IS LEAKING OUT THE SIDE OF MY FUEL FILLER PIPE, SLOWLY THEN HEAVILY WHEN I FUEL IT UP. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE I HAD WITH MY OLD 2003 GMC SAVANNA 1500 VAN. THERE WAS A NATIONAL RECALL ON THE 2003 GMC SAVANNA, YET THERE IS NOT ONE FOR MY 2012. I DID NOT REALIZE THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FILLER TUBE UNTIL I BROUGHT IT IN FOR SERVICE, TO CHECK THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT. A MONTH AGO, THE ERROR CODE WAS A SMALL EVAP LEAK. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID THAT THE FILLER TUBE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED SINCE IT IS RUSTED OUT OF THE SIDES. I AM A WHEELCHAIR USER, WHERE I NORMALLY DON'T HAVE TO FILL UP MY TANK. YET, AFTER GETTING THE DIAGNOSIS, I HAD TO FILL UP MY TANK SINCE IT WAS ON EMPTY. WHILE FILLING IT UP, I SMELLED GAS. I THEN NOTICED A PUDDLE FORMING UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. I THOUGHT ABOUT STOPPING, YET I WENT SLOWER. THIS DID NOT SLOW DOWN THE RAPID DRIPPINGS. SO I CONTINUED AS USUAL. IT WAS GETTING BIGGER WHERE IT WAS STARTING TO EXTEND BEYOND THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THEN IT WAS NEARLY FILLED UP WHEN I HEAR THE GAS SPILLING OUT ONTO THE LEFT REAR TIRE. I QUICKLY SHUT OFF THE NOZZLE, AND WIPED UP THE EXCESS FUEL OFF THE TIRE.

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-11-07
  • Date Complaint: 2017-03-23
  • VIN: IGDFG15R6Y1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHEN COMING TO A FULL STOP IN LIGHT TO MODERATE 35 TO 40 MILE AN HOUR TRAFFIC ZONES , USUALLY WHEN MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN, THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD OVER TRAVEL ALMOST TO THE FLOOR, THEIR WOULD BE A LOUD SCRUBBING SOUND. THIS HAPPENED A FEW YEARS AGO, AND I TOOK MY VAN TO THREE SEPARATE GM AUTHORIZED DEALERS/ REPAIR SHOPS ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEIR WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY BRAKES. THIS WAS VARY FRUSTRATING. SO I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL SHOP AND THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE RIGHT REAR PARKING BRAKE WAS ACTIVATED AND WOULD NOT RELEASE. THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM BY DISCONNECTING THE PARKING BRAKE CONTROL CABLE TO THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE DRUM. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED EXCEPT NOW I HAD NO PARKING BRAKES! SINCE THAT TIME I HAD BECOME DISABLED AND THE VAN SAT ON MY PROPERTY FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. UNTIL IT WAS TIME TO TAKE IT FOR A STATE REQUIRED EMISSIONS TEST. I TOOK THE VAN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC THAT WAS ALSO CERTIFIED BY THE STATE TO MAKE THE VAN PASS THE TEST. HE TOLD ME THAT I HAD A BRAKE CABLE DISCONNECTED, I TOLD HIM WHY. HE TOLD ME HE COULD FIXED THE PROBLEM, AND HE DID EVERY THING WORKED GUST FINE, AND HERE I AM A YEAR LATER FACING THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE HAS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH EITHER THE CABLE RUSTING AND WHEN SOMEONE APPLIES THE PARKING BRAKE THE RIGHT REAR DRUM WILL NOT RELEASE, OR SOMETHINGS WRONG WITH THE DRUM BRAKES. THE LAST TIME THE VAN WAS USED BY MY DAUGHTER, SHE HAS BEEN TRAINED TO OPERATE BIG BOX AMBULANCES, SHE IS AN EMT, SO I DON'T THINK SHE WOULD DRIVE IMPROPERLY, AND I WOULD ALSO TAKE HER WORK ABOUT THE MALFUNCTIONING BRAKES. ALL I CAN SAY IS HERE I GO AGAIN. BY THE WAY THIS VEHICLE HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE, LOOKS AND FUNCTIONS LIKE A NEW VAN EXCEPT FOR THIS BRAKE PROBLEM THAT KEEPS REOCCURRING. MAKE ME AFRAID TO LET ANY ONE USE IT, EVEN IF THEY BEEN TRAINED TO HANDLE LARGER VEHICLES.

  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: 2000 GMC SAVANA VAN WITH CONVERSION PACKAGE. POWER STEERING COMPLETELY FAILED. I FOUND A RECALL NOTICE ON THE NHTSA SITE, CALLED GMC AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL. AFTER I TOLD THE OPERATOR THE RECALL NUMBER SHE THEN FOUND A "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION SAFETY CAMPAIGN". I WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THIS SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD WITH MY VEHICLE. MY 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED. LUCKILY, SHE WAS ABLE TO PARK THE CAR WITHOUT INCIDENT. THIS IS A LARGE HEAVY CAR IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER W/O THE POWER STEERING. GMC WILL BE KIND ENOUGH TO FIX THE STEERING AFTER I GET THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER. (THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR TOWING) SOOO I GET TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE DEALER W/O THE POWER STEERING. I WONDER IF IT WOULD PASS AN ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE COURSE?? *JB

IN JUNE 2006, RIGHT REAR TIRE FAILED WITH MAJOR TREAD SEPARATION AND METAL CORDS UNRAVELED BENEATH TREAD CAUSING EGG SHAPE AND TIRE TO BECOME PARTIAL SHRAPNEL. IT WAS HOT DAY; OCCURRED WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED; TIRE PRESSURE HAD BEEN CHECKED SAME DAY AND WAS GOOD PER SIDEWALL MAX PSI RATING. REPLACED WITH PRO RATED DISCOUNT. TODAY, AUG 29, 2006, ANOTHER ONE OF THE TIRES FAILED IN EXACT SAME MANNER! THIS WAS FRONT RIGHT TIRE. TIRE HAD SEPARATION JUST BENEATH TREAD CAUSING EGG SHAPE AND ADVERSE HANDLING. I HAVE PHOTOS SAVED THIS TIME OF DAMAGE. TIRE PRESSURE CHECKED EARLIER SAME DAY AND PERFECT PER MFG PSI RATING ON TIRE. HOT DAY (AGAIN), HIGHWAY TRAVEL IN ARIZONA FOR ONE HOUR WHEN TIRE FAILED. TIRE COMING APART INTERNALLY, WITHIN TREAD AREA. I AM NOW CONVINCED SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS WHOLE BATCH OF CONTINENTAL'S FROM COLORADO IN 2004.
