The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).

With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).

The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 2017 Ford E-350 problems

The 2017 Ford E-350, a popular choice for commercial businesses, has been reported to have several common problems related to its engine, engine cooling, and transmission.

  • Rough Running Engine and Possible Check Engine Light: Some Ford E-350 owners have reported experiencing a rough running engine and a possible check engine light. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty spark plug, ignition coil, or fuel injector. A thorough inspection and diagnosis by a qualified mechanic can help identify the root cause of the problem and determine the appropriate repair.
  • Lack of Power After Shifting: Another common problem reported by Ford E-350 owners is a lack of power after shifting, particularly after the 1-2 shift. This issue can be caused by an un-commanded torque converter clutch, which can prevent the transmission from engaging properly and cause a loss of power. A qualified mechanic can diagnose and repair this issue by inspecting the transmission and replacing any faulty parts.
  • Whining Sound from Transmission: Some Ford E-350 owners have reported a whining sound coming from the transmission, particularly when the vehicle is in neutral or when the engine RPMs are raised. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as a failing transmission or a problem with the torque converter. A qualified mechanic can diagnose and repair this issue by inspecting the transmission and replacing any faulty parts.
  • Transmission Not Engaging in Drive: Some Ford E-350 owners have reported that the transmission does not engage in drive until the engine RPMs are raised to around 2000 or more. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty transmission solenoid or a problem with the transmission control module. A qualified mechanic can diagnose and repair this issue by inspecting the transmission and replacing any faulty parts.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Ford E-350 owners, based on complaints from owners of this car. It is essential to address these issues promptly to prevent more severe problems from developing and ensure the vehicle's longevity and reliability. Regular maintenance and inspections by a qualified mechanic can help identify and prevent these issues, ensuring the vehicle remains safe and reliable for years to come.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-07
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1FDWE3FS3HD
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THIS VEHICLE IS USED AS AN AMBULANCE. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN TWO MAJOR ACCIDENTS, ONCE GOING FORWARD FROM A STATIONARY POSITION THROUGH OUR BUILDING GARAGE DOOR AND THE OTHER WHILE IN REVERSE TRYING TO SLOW DOWN BACKING UP AND GOING THROUGH AN INTERIOR BUILDING WALL. THE GAS AND BRAKE PEDAL ARE LOCATED TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. WHEN THE DRIVER WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKES HIS FOOT PRESSES DOWN ON THE THROTTLE PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME, CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO TAKE OFF. THE MORE BRAKE YOU PUSH THE MORE THROTTLE IS PRESSED. WE ALSO ON TWO OTHER OCCASIONS WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS OUTSIDE HAVE HAD THE DRIVERS WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE IN A STATIONARY POSITION SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE ALSO PRESS THE GAS CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO GO TO A VERY HIGH RPM AS THEY SHIFTED INTO DRIVE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LAUNCH FORWARD. EACH INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED INVOLVED DIFFERENT DRIVERS. I PERSONALLY AM RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL VEHICLE MAINTENANCE FOR THE ASSOCIATION, I MEASURED THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THESE PEDALS AS COMPARED TO OUR OTHER AMBULANCE. THE PEDALS ON THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS ALMOST 3/4 OF AN INCH CLOSER THAN OUR F450. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER AFTER THE FIRST ACCIDENT AND CHECKED AND NO ISSUE WAS FOUND. ACCIDENTS OCCURRED 1/18/2018 AND 2/7/2019 *DT*JB *BF*JB

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-23
  • VIN: 1FT8W3BT4HE
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE AT THE SPEED OF 75 MPH WENT OVER A SMALL BUMP ON ROAD THAT HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND MY TRUCK WENT INTO A SEVERE FRONT END SHAKE AND WOBBLE THAT I JUST ABOUT WENT INTO THE DITCH. (SCARED TO DEATH) SLOWED DOWN TO 10 MPH AND IT STOPPED SO I SLOWLY REGAINED SPEED ONLY TO FIND THAT THE NEXT LITTLE BUMP I WENT OVER IT DONE IT AGAIN. I AM HEAR TO SAY THAT IF I HAD BEEN PULLING MY LIVING QUARTERS HORSE TRAILER I AM SURE THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT. SO I SEE OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE SO WHAT IS TAKING THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY SO LONG IN DOING A RECALL TO FIX THIS DEATH TRAP THAT WE ARE DRIVING ON PUBLIC HIGHWAYS? I AM HEAR TO SAY THAT IF SOMETHING WOULD OF HAPPENED TO ME OR MY HUSBAND YOU WOULD BE HEARING FROM MY LAWYER. LETS GET THE PROBLEM FIXED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED IF THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ALREADY. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME IN THREE MONTHS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME. THE DATE LISTED BELOW IS THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WHILE ON INTERSTATE.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-03-28
  • VIN: 1FDWE3FS4HD
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: WE ORDERED A 2017 WITH AN ADVERTISED GVW OF 14,500 AND GCVW OF 22,000 (E450) BUT THE MANUFACTURER SUBSTITUTED A 2018 PRODUCT WITH A GCVW OF 18,500 (E350) AND GVW OF ONLY 12,500 WHICH IN MY OPINION IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN CONSIDERING THAT MOST VEHICLES SOLD WILL LIKELY BE OVERWEIGHT WHEN IN USE AND IT CLEARLY WILL NOT MEET THE NEEDS OF WHAT WE EXPECTED TO RECEIVE. THOR IGNORES OUR CONCERNS AND HAS OFFERED NO SOLUTION AS TO HOW WE CAN SAFELY USE THIS MOTORHOME CONSIDERING IT IS BORDERLINE OVERWEIGHT WITH MINIMAL LOADING AND PASSENGERS.
