Daewoo Lanos problems

The Daewoo Lanos is a compact / sedan car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Daewoo from 1997 to 2002, and thereafter produced under license agreements in various countries worldwide. It has also been marketed as the Daewoo Sens, ZAZ Sens and ZAZ Lanos in Ukraine, Doninvest Assol and ZAZ Chance in Russia, FSO Lanos in Poland, or Chevrolet Lanos in Ukraine, Russia, and Egypt.

It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and initially featured three body styles: three-door and five-door hatchbacks and a four-door sedan. The Lanos was designated the T100 model code at launch; the T150 code applies to the updated models introduced in 1999. In 2006, a panel van version, produced in Ukraine by ZAZ, was also introduced. The Daewoo Lanos was designed to replace the Daewoo Nexia in the Daewoo line-up and was itself replaced by the Daewoo Kalos.

Production of the Daewoo Lanos ended in 2020.

Common Daewoo Lanos problems

The Daewoo Lanos, a compact car known for its affordability and reliability, has several common issues that have been reported by owners. These problems vary depending on the year range, engine type, and complectations of the car.

For the 1997-1999 models, engine misfires and stalling issues are common problems. Engine misfires can be caused by various factors, such as faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Stalling issues, on the other hand, can be due to a malfunctioning idle air control valve, a vacuum leak, or a dirty throttle body.

In the 2000-2002 models, transmission problems and electrical issues are more prevalent. Transmission issues can include difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, or a complete transmission failure. Electrical problems can range from minor issues, such as blown fuses or malfunctioning lights, to more significant problems, such as a faulty alternator or a dead battery.

The A15MF engine, found in some models, is prone to oil leaks and timing belt tensioner failure. Oil leaks can be caused by worn-out gaskets, damaged seals, or a cracked engine block. Timing belt tensioner failure can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.

The A16DMS engine, on the other hand, is known for overheating issues and oil pump failure. Overheating can be caused by a faulty thermostat, a damaged water pump, or a low coolant level. Oil pump failure can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.

The base model of the Lanos is known for a lack of power and poor fuel economy. The SE model, on the other hand, is prone to brake issues, such as premature wear of brake pads and rotors. The SX model often experiences suspension issues, such as worn-out shocks and struts, and transmission problems, including issues with shifting and slipping gears.

Rust problems are common in the first generation Lanos, particularly in areas with harsh winter climates where salt is used on the roads. Fuel injector issues are also known to occur in the first-generation Lanos.

In the second generation Lanos, electrical problems and transmission issues are more prevalent. Electrical problems can range from minor issues, such as blown fuses or malfunctioning lights, to more significant problems, such as a faulty alternator or a dead battery. Transmission issues can include difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, or a complete transmission failure.

In summary, the Daewoo Lanos, while known for its affordability and reliability, is not without its share of common issues across the different model years and trims. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent or catch some of these issues before they become major problems.

Are Daewoo Lanos reliable?

The Daewoo Lanos is a great vehicle that is reliable and is great on fuel. I have owned my lanos for around 2 years now,it had 200000km on it when i purchased it for $820 it now has 260000km on it and all i have replaced is a slave cylinder for the clutch along with the general servicing parts.

What is the problem with the 1999 Daewoo Lanos?

The 1999 Daewoo Lanos is a cheap inner city run around but that's about as good as it gets. It struggles to make it up even the slightest incline and sometimes struggles off the mark. There is a common problem with the heater core and the hoses needed to be re-routed to prevent it from leaking into the car.

How much is a Daewoo Lanos worth?

The Daewoo Lanos is available from $2,310 to $4,070 for the 2003 range of models in Hatchback and Sedan body types. Interested in a Daewoo Lanos?

Is Daewoo a good brand for cars?

While Daewoo followed a formula similar to its Hyundai and Kia rivals — low-priced cars packed with loads of standard features — we found Daewoo's performance and interior quality subpar even when measured against the inconsistent quality of its domestic competitors.

    Vehicle year: 2001

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you my family's experience with our car. We bought it brand new in September 2001 and it only had 2 miles on it when we got it! We used it to commute 5 days a week from Sussex NJ to Wayne NJ. We did have to rebuild the upper half of the motor around 75k when the timing chain snapped and damaged the motor, but other than that, it's been a great car. The odometer is creeping up on 100k, but the air is still cold, it still drives in a straight line, and we've only had to get 3 alignments in 4 years. Can you believe that the original fuel pump is still pumping? The automatic transaxle still shifts smoothly with nearly 100k. Even my friends love it as much as I do! I just wish more people appreciated this car. It's truly a great car! If they were still available for sale in the US, I would go buy another brand new one. Thanks for listening!

  2. Jayce Abshire 2024-08-25

    Vehicle year: 2002

I purchased this car brand new for $7995. It came with the comfort package, air conditioning, and power steering. It even included floor mats, making it a great value. Although I hadn't planned on buying this car, the price was too good to pass up. After test driving it, I was sold. This little car has great pickup and can easily maneuver through highway traffic. It's surprisingly comfortable for an economy car and an absolute joy to drive. The power rack and pinion steering provides excellent handling. With its five-speed manual transmission, it feels like a European sports car.

This is a great little entry level car. My wife bought one and she loves it! It handles well and has great fuel economy. I would highly recommend this car based on its price alone. Nothing else compares to it. Period.

My radio stopped working after I changed the battery in my Daewoo. I reached out to the service department for help and they provided me with some codes, but unfortunately none of them worked. I'm a bit confused about how a potential thief would know that the radio doesn't work, and if they would bother returning it. Can anyone help me out? By the way, I love my Daewoo!

  5. Consuelo Franecki 2024-08-07

    Vehicle year: 2000

Although some people have had good results with their Daewoo's, I have unfortunately experienced a number of issues with my car's engine. Despite seeking assistance, the problem has not yet been resolved. It is important to note that Daewoo is currently bankrupt and no longer producing parts for their cars. As a result, it is recommended to ensure that your local Daewoo dealer has the necessary parts in stock before making a purchase. Thank you for considering this information.

So far, your experience with your Lanos sounds excellent, except for three minor issues. Firstly, the passenger seatbelt tends to get too tight as you travel, and it can be difficult to loosen the strap. Secondly, it seems that the air conditioning unit may be leaking water onto the passenger side floor. Lastly, the chrome-colored paint on the hubcaps is coming off. However, overall, it's great to hear that you are very satisfied with the excellent performance of your vehicle!

I still have and drive my great car, which I turned into a racer. Unfortunately, it's no longer sold in Puerto Rico, and many of its parts are no longer available. I had to purchase most of the parts online through eBay or salvage them from other cars at the junkyard.

  3. Kelvin Gorczany 2024-11-14

I love driving this car! It's fun, looks great, and gets approximately 28 mpg with all the driving that I do. Awesome!

  4. Dimitri Hintz 2024-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2000

After 20 years, I finally parted with my beloved 2000 Daewoo Lanos. It was still working great, but it was finally too small for my family and I needed a bigger car. I gave it to a friend and it is still going strong. It has never broken down, not even once in 20 years! I was HARD on it - I used it to carry heavy sound equipment all the time, and construction supplies. (The rear seats fold down and the trunk is HUGE.) That said, I drove short distances and it's only at about 120K miles. I performed the recommended engine belt replacement (every 60K miles) and I changed the oil every 8K miles or so when I remembered. I have replaced the usual wear and tear items like fluids and the battery, and also the alternator and tires occasionally. Air conditioning coolant had to be replaced at year 18. The only things that ever actually went wrong were the light inside the trunk went out after about 12 years, and I broke off the exterior lever of the door handle (very simple to replace though). If you see one used, know it is a reliable car. It's simple, cheap, but so very reliable. Any Japanese or Korean car repair place will be able to do the routine maintenance. It isn't a complicated car. Also, a bonus is that no one steals them for parts because there is no market for that. Hint: avoid red paint colors when possible because those don't hold up as well as other colors. The only downside is that Daewoo is out of business and you rarely find Daewoos anymore. But if you're looking for a reliable car, it's definitely worth considering.

In my opinion, I believe that cars tend to depreciate over time. Therefore, I prefer not to spend a lot of money on them. I look for a car that can get me from point A to B with dependability and economy, and this car fits the bill perfectly. When I sit behind the wheel, I don't feel like I'm in a tin box. I purchased my warranty through General Motors, and although I had some transmission slippage problems, the dealership caught it during regular servicing and resolved the issue with no cost or hassle to me whatsoever.
