The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid

Why did the Tahoe Hybrid fail?

Unfortunately, the hybrid Tahoe was a victim of timing: When the SUV first came out, there was a recession due to the collapse of the housing market and people were more selective on how they spent their money. To make matters worse, the hybrid version of the Chevy Tahoe was not cheap as the price started near $50,000.

What is the most common problem with the Chevy Tahoe?

Chevy Tahoes have issues with their lifters getting stuck or locked in place within newer models equipped with 5.3L L84 V-8 and 6.2L L87 V-8 EcoTec3 engines. An improperly functioning lifter triggers the check engine light and causes: Ticking and banging noises. Misfires.

Is the Tahoe Hybrid discontinued?

The Chevy Tahoe Hybrid hit the market for the 2008 model year; however, it was discontinued just a few years later in 2013 (via Cars). It seemed like a no-brainer that the hybrid version of the Chevy Tahoe would have been a major success, but due to a couple of factors, this didn't end up being the case.

How many miles per gallon does a Tahoe Hybrid get?

EPA-estimated mileage is 20 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined regardless of drivetrain.

There are some issues that come with this purchase. Firstly, you may lose some standard features that are available on cheaper models of this vehicle, such as automatic lift gate and luggage rack, as well as safety features like a spare tire and jack. Additionally, if you encounter a faulty hybrid generator (battery pack) like I did, it can be quite problematic. Despite several attempts to have it replaced under warranty, GM provided various excuses as to why it wasn't the battery pack. Unfortunately, once the warranty expired, the cost of a new battery pack was around $5k. The battery pack controls everything, so when it fails, everything will run intermittently, which can be quite costly and unsafe. For instance, the computer that controls the interchange between gas and electric motors may shut the car off when you try to go after stops for lifts or signs, causing you to cut off intersections and sometimes in slow or stop-no-go traffic. Mine has even cut off when crossing intersections with vehicles coming. To avoid this, I have to hold down the brake and rev the gas, which defeats the purpose of the hybrid because you still burn the extra fuel. Overall, it's important to consider these factors before making a purchase.

I have reported the issues I have had with my vehicle to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association twice, as they are well-known online. Despite the well-known oil issue, there has been no recall. I replaced the valve cover to address the issue, but unfortunately, it did not resolve the problem. Additionally, the spider gear in the rear end shredded, which is another known issue with no recall. I have had to spend a significant amount of money on repairs, but I remain confident in my ability to address any issues that arise with my vehicle. The issues I have experienced with my 2008 Chevy are unacceptable. Despite having replaced the oil sending unit and sensor, the back wiper motor, and several other components, my check engine light is still on, my back hatch won't open, my clock won't work, and my passenger doors won't lock with the button or remote. These problems are not only frustrating, but they also make it difficult for me to trade in my car or even use it on a daily basis. Chevy needs to take responsibility for these issues and issue a recall immediately. I have faith that they will do the right thing and reimburse me for the expenses I have incurred. It is disappointing that Chevy is not producing vehicles to the same standard as they used to. My husband's 2005 Chevy truck with over 250,000 miles and my brother's 2006 truck with over 350,000 miles have not had the same issues that I have had in just two years. As a loyal Chevy customer, I expect better.

I recently purchased a 2010 Tahoe Hybrid (my third car) with 130K miles and a 6.0L V8 engine. Unfortunately, after driving it for only 3000 miles, the motor broke down. Cylinder 1 & 6 have no compression and the lifters collapsed. While I usually don't buy American cars, this experience has reminded me why. Despite the truck's immaculate body and interior, I now need to find a replacement motor. It's disappointing that American car companies produce such unreliable vehicles. In my opinion, German and Japanese automakers are far superior in terms of longevity. It's a real shame that American car companies haven't learned how to build cars that last.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it because I needed to tow my 5500 lb. boat and I also wanted to improve my fuel economy. And guess what? It was a success! I've towed my boat over Colorado passes with no problems at all. Although it does push the car around a bit, I still get around 20 to 22 miles per gallon around town and 16 mpg while towing. Living in the Colorado Rockies, I can say that the 4wd snow and ice capabilities are amazing. However, I did notice that they lowered the ground clearance and the front plastic panel bottoms out a lot. Also, the car makes some weird noises from the electric motors that I can't describe (clicking, humming, and buzzing). But overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs to tow. Thanks for reading!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2002 Tahoe LT. It's been a great car for me, with only a couple of minor issues with the power windows. I recently gave it to one of our store managers and it's still running great! One of the things I love about it is that it's a hybrid that can tow my 4000 lb. boat and haul heavy loads of beverages. It's really versatile! I've been getting a combined 20.7 mpg in city and highway driving, which is pretty impressive. The car handles towing my boat really well and it's also super quiet. The only downside is that the back seat doesn't fold down like the older Tahoe, so I lose a bit of cargo space. I really hope that GM continues their Hybrid program because it's been such a great feature for me. Thanks for listening!

This large 8 SUV is everything you could dream of. It rides smoothly and is incredibly quiet! The cabin is spacious and the seating is comfortable. The Hybrid model is fully loaded with finely appointed leather seats, power options, navigation, and a DVD player. With Hybrid technology, you can save a lot of money on gas! Compared to my previous Nissan Pathfinder SE (V6), the Tahoe uses only half the amount of gas. On average, this Hybrid Tahoe gives you 20 miles per gallon. The warranty from GM is excellent and the handling is good overall. You should definitely test drive it, you will be pleasantly surprised. I love my Tahoe!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed driving this vehicle, especially during the summer of '08 when gas prices were high. It has a comfortable ride, spacious interior, and remains quiet even after 45,000 miles. Although there were some issues with the hybrid transmission failing and requiring extra service three times, it's great to hear that the dealer was able to quickly repair it each time. It's definitely worth the hassle to get such excellent mileage from a full-sized SUV.
