Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid problems

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, some common problems with this car include:

  • Airbag-Related Challenges:
    • The 2010 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid faced recalls related to airbag-related challenges, with five recalls reported due to these issues. Airbags are critical safety components in vehicles, and any problems with their functionality can pose serious risks to the driver and passengers.

Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid

Why did the Tahoe Hybrid fail?

Unfortunately, the hybrid Tahoe was a victim of timing: When the SUV first came out, there was a recession due to the collapse of the housing market and people were more selective on how they spent their money. To make matters worse, the hybrid version of the Chevy Tahoe was not cheap as the price started near $50,000.

What is the most common problem with the Chevy Tahoe?

Chevy Tahoes have issues with their lifters getting stuck or locked in place within newer models equipped with 5.3L L84 V-8 and 6.2L L87 V-8 EcoTec3 engines. An improperly functioning lifter triggers the check engine light and causes: Ticking and banging noises. Misfires.

Is the Tahoe Hybrid discontinued?

The Chevy Tahoe Hybrid hit the market for the 2008 model year; however, it was discontinued just a few years later in 2013 (via Cars). It seemed like a no-brainer that the hybrid version of the Chevy Tahoe would have been a major success, but due to a couple of factors, this didn't end up being the case.

How many miles per gallon does a Tahoe Hybrid get?

EPA-estimated mileage is 20 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined regardless of drivetrain.

    Vehicle year: 2010

I recently sold my 2008 Tahoe Hybrid in birch metallic after owning it for 5 years. It was a bittersweet moment for me. I bought this big truck mainly for its looks and because I have three kids, so I needed something bigger. As a car guy, I couldn't just settle for a minivan in my driveway, and this truck allowed me to check that box. The magnesium alloy 18It looks like most of the weight is on the front axle, which means the 2wd version is not suitable for even dry lawns. Additionally, the transmission had a clunky feel that became bothersome over time. It would sometimes get confused between hybrid mode, 4 cylinder, and 8 cylinder modes, resulting in driveline shutters and clunks that should not have been present in a vehicle that cost $55k new. The rear diff was replaced under extended warranty at 80K miles, which included all the gears, bearings, bushings, and everything. The door locks failed repeatedly, but thankfully we found GruvenParts.com, which provided reliable replacements. Although the Nav and OnStar worked fine, they were far behind the times. I miss the truck mainly for its stunning looks, but its reliability and driveability left much to be desired. I hope the 2015 model is better, but I wonder if GM just reshaped the sheet metal and slapped a $70K sticker price on it. If they did, they do not deserve another bailout. I would not buy another GM, mainly due to the repeated interactions with GM customer service on the dash and door locks. They have hired offshore contractors who know nothing and care nothing about US owners. With the dash, they directed me to a local dealer, then told me it was entirely up to them. I sat down with the service manager, and he agreed that the dash is flawed, and GM should cover it, not give owners of $55K trucks a circle jerk. I will not buy another because of this. Sorry.

There are some issues that come with this purchase. Firstly, you may lose some standard features that are available on cheaper models of this vehicle, such as automatic lift gate and luggage rack, as well as safety features like a spare tire and jack. Additionally, if you encounter a faulty hybrid generator (battery pack) like I did, it can be quite problematic. Despite several attempts to have it replaced under warranty, GM provided various excuses as to why it wasn't the battery pack. Unfortunately, once the warranty expired, the cost of a new battery pack was around $5k. The battery pack controls everything, so when it fails, everything will run intermittently, which can be quite costly and unsafe. For instance, the computer that controls the interchange between gas and electric motors may shut the car off when you try to go after stops for lifts or signs, causing you to cut off intersections and sometimes in slow or stop-no-go traffic. Mine has even cut off when crossing intersections with vehicles coming. To avoid this, I have to hold down the brake and rev the gas, which defeats the purpose of the hybrid because you still burn the extra fuel. Overall, it's important to consider these factors before making a purchase.

I have reported the issues I have had with my vehicle to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association twice, as they are well-known online. Despite the well-known oil issue, there has been no recall. I replaced the valve cover to address the issue, but unfortunately, it did not resolve the problem. Additionally, the spider gear in the rear end shredded, which is another known issue with no recall. I have had to spend a significant amount of money on repairs, but I remain confident in my ability to address any issues that arise with my vehicle. The issues I have experienced with my 2008 Chevy are unacceptable. Despite having replaced the oil sending unit and sensor, the back wiper motor, and several other components, my check engine light is still on, my back hatch won't open, my clock won't work, and my passenger doors won't lock with the button or remote. These problems are not only frustrating, but they also make it difficult for me to trade in my car or even use it on a daily basis. Chevy needs to take responsibility for these issues and issue a recall immediately. I have faith that they will do the right thing and reimburse me for the expenses I have incurred. It is disappointing that Chevy is not producing vehicles to the same standard as they used to. My husband's 2005 Chevy truck with over 250,000 miles and my brother's 2006 truck with over 350,000 miles have not had the same issues that I have had in just two years. As a loyal Chevy customer, I expect better.

I traded my 07 Tahoe LTZ for this hybrid and I'm really happy with it. It's amazing to have cold A/C while burning no fuel, even when sitting at a standstill. The 4WD works great and it pulls my trailer effortlessly. Although I miss some features like the rain sense wipers, memory seats, and power tailgate, I'm getting 4-5mpg more than the all-gas Tahoe, which has saved me around 25% on gas usage. This is especially great considering how expensive gas was last summer and fall. The ride is smooth and comfortable. When I bought it, there was a recall to replace something in the hybrid system, but the dealership was very accommodating and provided me with a Caddy while it was in the shop.

I've owned my 08 hybrid Tahoe for about 8 years and it's been a great SUV for my family. It drives great and I highly recommend it. Mine has just hit 200,000 miles and has never had any major problems, just a few minor recalls. You can fit 8 people perfectly. You should definitely consider getting one, it's the best!

  3. Ola Boyle 2025-04-13

We love cars and enjoy buying a newer used automobile every 12 months or so. Over the years, we have owned several models including Tahoe, Suburbans, Land Rover LR3, 2009 Subaru Outback, and now this one for my wife. It has been a dream come true for us as it not only has plenty of power but also gets better gas mileage than my new used 2010 Volvo small xc60. The second row bench is a big plus as it can hold seven people comfortably. We have not encountered any problems yet and have driven it for 34k miles. It performs well in snow and the Onstar is really nice. The navigation system with XM is one of the best features of this car. In fact, the gas mileage for this much vehicle beats all the above mentioned even smaller vehicles including the Subaru (AWD Tahoe in 2WD mode).

  4. Aron Terry 2025-04-11

This car has performed exceptionally well. We have been able to tow a large ski boat without any issues and still maintain around 14 mpg. During regular driving, we get around 23 mpg. We have only experienced a few minor issues in the past year and a half, including power door lock and two recalls. As one of the first purchasers of this vehicle in the area, it was normal to experience one or two recalls. The only improvements we made were adding headrest monitors, a transmission cooler, and removing the hybrid decals. Overall, this car was worth every penny and has saved me a lot of money on gas compared to my old Tahoe.

  5. Gayle Corkery 2025-03-12

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it because I needed to tow my 5500 lb. boat and I also wanted to improve my fuel economy. And guess what? It was a success! I've towed my boat over Colorado passes with no problems at all. Although it does push the car around a bit, I still get around 20 to 22 miles per gallon around town and 16 mpg while towing. Living in the Colorado Rockies, I can say that the 4wd snow and ice capabilities are amazing. However, I did notice that they lowered the ground clearance and the front plastic panel bottoms out a lot. Also, the car makes some weird noises from the electric motors that I can't describe (clicking, humming, and buzzing). But overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs to tow. Thanks for reading!
